Great news: Russian attack subs spotted off east coast of U.S.

posted at 9:55 pm on August 4, 2009 by Allahpundit

You know what this calls for? An Obama speech in Red Square about the common humanity that unites us in a struggle for blah blah blah blah.

But the collapse of the Soviet Union all but eliminated the ability of the Russian Navy to operate far from home ports, making the current submarine patrols thousands of miles from Russia even more surprising for military officials and defense policy experts.

“I don’t think they’ve put two first-line nuclear subs off the U.S. coast in about 15 years,” said Norman Polmar, a naval historian and expert on submarine warfare…

The submarine patrols come as Moscow tries to shake off the embarrassment of the latest failed test of the Bulava missile, a long-range weapon that was test fired from a submarine in the Arctic on July 15. The failed missile test was the sixth since 2005, and some experts see Russia’s assertiveness elsewhere as a gambit by the military to prove its continued relevance…

While the submarines had not taken any provocative action beyond their presence outside territorial waters of the United States, officials expressed wariness over the Kremlin’s motivation for ordering such an unusual mission.

“Any time the Russian Navy does something so out of the ordinary it is cause for worry,” said a senior Defense Department official who has been monitoring reports on the submarines’ activities.

A few possibilities off the top of my head for What This Might Mean in addition to the NYT’s “Bulava missile” theory. (1) Russia wants to see how much The One will let them get away with, just as Biden predicted would happen last year. (2) Russia’s pissed at Biden for his crack a few weeks ago about their economy “withering” and is flexing some muscle in response. (3) Russia’s looking to expand its presence in the western hemisphere more generally, which explains its naval exercises with Venezuela in December. (4) Russia’s gearing up to make another move on Georgia and is putting The One on notice that they’re not to be trifled with when they do. (5) Russia’s got a fee-vah and the only prescription is more bare-chested Putin photos, and a display of military strength in America’s backyard makes for nice optics on the front page tomorrow next to Vlad’s pecs. You’re free to vote for more than one theory — they’re hardly mutually exclusive — but as of right now I’m leaning towards number 4.

I’ll go with #4. Obama is stirring the domestic pot with his propaganda. News media stirring up the foreign affairs pot reporting all kinds of provocation from hostile governments.

Could be fun.

But if the Senate would just pass that health care reform bill, all our worries would be over.

Until congress starts marking up the cap-n-fraud bill.

The SOSUS nets, including the portions whose capabilities are so top secret I doubt even the POTUS is aware of them, had these Russian subs by the time they got within 1,000 miles of the U.S. coast.

Probably doesn’t mean anything but this evening I saw two Coast Guard boats going out of the Lewes, Delaware canal into the Atlantic Ocean with 50 mm machine guns MOUNTED.

I have seen many Coast Guard vessels while living here for the past 10 years. I have NEVER seen any with machine guns mounted before.

Just a coincidence? Things that make you go hmmmmmmm!

Upstater85 on August 4, 2009 at 10:46 PM

Whether boomers or attack subs…the mere presence of a Russian sub patrol off our coast is provocative. One boat inshore, the other a bit farther offshore. Spike the profile, then collect all sorts of intel on our reaction, the chain of command, deployment of assets (surface ships, aircraft, other subs), which comms we use, and test their own ability to intercept ULF comms among others. Additionally, show the rest of the hemisphere that the United States is toothless…and with Russia’s harboring agreements with Cuba and Venezuela, soon to have the same with Nicaragua, if Ortega gets his way, and the Russians may be here to stay.

If this is not provocative then what is?

Writing off the Russian navy is not a smart approach. The at sea assets they do have up and running are pretty much newer units, fully combat capable. A smaller navy, true, but a navy with a high degree of lethality should the need arise.

To get to the east coast of the U.S., the Russians have to transit the Greenland, Iceland, U.K. (GIUK) gap. I am certain that there are any number of sensors through the gap.

Then, they have to approach the eastern coast of the U.S. where they would approach another sensor line. The Russians might have as well sent a message that they were coming, or traveled on the surface.

There is no news or issue here.

Just pick a few of those really, really angry, mean old-timers from one of those out-of-control townhall riots. Give ‘em a rubber raft, a few paddles, a couple of fifths of Jack Daniels, carton of cigs, and a case of dynamite. Point them east into the Atlantic and wait.

Bishop on August 4, 2009 at 10:43 PM

True dat. The question here is: What are our ROE’s? Do we trail and track and do some acoustic mapping? Do we trail and engage if he does “x” or “y”?

If he’s in International waters, then even if he tracks a merchant and runs attack simulations, there’s nothing we can do. If we try and disrupt him, will he bug out or turn to engage, believing he’s being attacked? Heck, even if he floods his tubes, that’s all part of the drill.

This is the sort of thing we did day in and day out during the Cold War. Everything short of actually pulling the trigger. People died then. People I flew with died then.

The big problem is that Obama isn’t a decisive President, and he certainly isn’t a Cold War President, and most assuredly, he isn’t a warrior President. he doesn’t have the intelligence, the backbone, or the just plain common sense that that job requires.

This nation needs a leader. Instead, we have a Community Organizer.

We are so scr3wed.

Uhm … if y’all think we don’t have our subs off the Russian coast – you’re misinformed.

I don’t fault the Russians for having subs off our coasts. What I DO lament is the fact that we don’t have enough subs to track them 24 / 7.

We need to build CONVENTIONAL Subs for our coastal defense.

Makes complete sense – the technology for self-contained diesel systems is out there and conventional subs are quieter than nukes (always have been) – and we can build several diesels for every nuke we can build.

Nukes are great for projecting power – but diesels are great for home defense – especially small and fast ones that can maneuver in shallow water. The Russians could come – but they’d be in for a serious headache – not to mention a severe blow to their morale.

You bet we do. Maybe even purchase some of the new-design U-Boats from Germany, if needs be.

China recently passed the 60-hull mark in her conventional fleet of “Romeo” class boats. An older Soviet design, but easy to build and maintain, and when you can sortie that many units, it gives you lots of options.

Awfully hard to track a battery, as I can attest. Once they go sinker, it’s a different ball game.

The old Long Beach (CGN-9) nuke-fueled cruiser was around for a while, was supposed to be part of the CVN surface fleet…never went much beyond that. The navy wanted a surface fleet that could keep up withthe carriers. The navy was looking at the CG(X) program for a while until recently…building nuke powered cruisers with unlimited range. I believe the bean counters may have killed the program. Haven’t seen much about it for a while.

don’t get too upset about this, remember; WE KNOW THEY’RE THERE. I would guess that they’re submerged(otherwise what’s the point?) and fairly deep. They’re checking to see if we’re paying attention. (think red october) The USN trains/tracks them all the time maybe just not recently as the Russians have been busy (and broke). We do the same to them to test their capabilities (and ours). Rest assured that this news blurb was formulated by the Navy to let the Russians know that we know they’re there. so now that they know we know then they’ll let us know that they know that we know and the game begins again. (unless some idiot a la “The Bedford Incident” does something stupid, then it’s all up for grabs).

Maybe Pinnochio will invite them to his next twenty minute, out on the lawn, in front of a bunch of adoring, dutiful, reporters, beer party!
What kind of beer do Ruskies drink?
Colt 45?
Black and Blue or is that Blatz Blue?

dhunter on August 4, 2009 at 11:11 PM

I wouldn’t worry about it, people. Obama will pay Russia off and that will be the end of that—for a month or two until they come back for more.

FloatingRock on August 4, 2009 at 11:11 PM

Imagine if Gore’s all too real predictions of rising sea levels come true; Russian subs could literally sneak up on Kansas and bombard Wichita.

Bishop on August 4, 2009 at 11:08 PM

Brilliant!

Punchenko on August 4, 2009 at 11:12 PM

I guess that Reset button Hillary and the Russkie pushed reset the attack subs.

Tantor on August 4, 2009 at 11:13 PM

I have seen many Coast Guard vessels while living here for the past 10 years. I have NEVER seen any with machine guns mounted before.

Just a coincidence? Things that make you go hmmmmmmm!

ukgoods on August 4, 2009 at 10:44 PM

With all due respect to the Coast Guard, if there is a threat from Russian subs on the east coast, I’m hoping the filthy liar in the White House is doing more than sending out CG cutters with 50 cal machine guns mounted.

There could be no other way.

I can’t believe you can post sarcasm AND run for your life at the same time.

Laura in Maryland on August 4, 2009 at 11:11 PM

Well

This is what I figure

If the Russians do launch nukes

my house is built into a hill — I have protection. I have hills around my home as well, and I am 150 feet above sea level. I have a chance of survival.

bring crabcakes.

blatantblue on August 4, 2009 at 11:14 PM

Forget Hunt for Red October. I’m thinking Red Storm Rising without the happy ending.

Completely O/T – anybody in “flyover country” willing to take in a middle-aged broad and family? I’ll bring crabcakes.

Laura in Maryland on August 4, 2009 at 11:09 PM

LOL! Mid 40′s SWM has got some room, but it’d be tight ‘pending on family size!

Archimedes on August 4, 2009 at 11:14 PM

what next? Seriously, what next? At what point dose 53% of America wake the f up and say “oops”? At what poinoes our illustrious “leader” wake up and say “uh oh”???????

Laura in Maryland on August 4, 2009 at 11:09 PM

Hmmm..let me consider this…worthy of consideration. How big is the family? :-)

Maryland crab cakes? Used to drive down to the Solomons often, across from the Patuxent River Navy Station, just for the crab cakes.

I evacuated Southern Maryland back in ’95. Flyover country is better living, really.
