I’ve have been posting about the subject of requiring the bill to include language mandating federal government participation in the “public option” since the evening of the President’s press conference.

He was specifically asked about Congress and himself at the press conference by Steven Thomma of McClatchy, by the way, and Obama slipped the question. Thomma wasn’t even supposed to be called on (Obama called out Steve Koff’s name but Steve Thomma jumped up) in that carefully orchestrated presser. Obama obviously didn’t know either one of them, and he pointed to Thomma, which is the only reason why he got to ask that question.

After the President rambled on a bit, here was Thomma’s follow up:

Q: And what about yourself and Congress? Would you abide by the same benefits package?

Still no specific response, except a joke about why it really could not apply to him as President, as he claimed he has doctors following him around everywhere.

I specifically suggested in a post that night a draft of an amendment to the healthcare legislation, requiring that all Members of Congress (as well as all officers and employees of the federal government) get the “public option” instead of the current Cadillac coverage they all have.

The language would specifically allow them to purchase any additional coverage they want, entirely at their own expense, of course. That post contained an embedded video of a town meeting held by first-term Representative Russ Carnahan (D-MO), who was moving right along citing his stats, until his constituents actually began openly laughing at some of his statements. Then some fellow in the back of the room slipped him the shiv . . . asking,

“If it’s so good, why doesn’t Congress have to be on it?”

Indeed! The look on Carnahan’s face and the looks on the faces of his staff tell the tale, as everyone in the room began to cheer the question!

I also posted about the fact that the stated legislative purposes of the bill (HR-3200) coordinate very nicely with such a federal requirement. Maybe the Legislators refuse to read the bill, but now that there is a public version, some of us should begin wading through its provisions.

Sunday, the Los Angeles Times did a good story which details some of the great benefits the Congress and federal officials currently have, and the costs to us!

If they pass the Health Care Takeover Bill despite the growing anger among the populace about it and despite the complete lack of support for such a move in The Constitution of The United States of America, then they will be no better than the tyranny which our Founding Fathers fought in order to establish this great nation.
