Open thread: Michelle on “The View”

posted at 10:15 am on August 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

11 a.m. ET on ABC. Odds that this’ll end up as anything other than a complete clusterfark: 80-1. Over/under on how long the boss will be allowed to speak before being interrupted: Four seconds. Likelihood that I’ll deal with the mounting anxiety by getting buzzed before airtime: 95 percent.

Dude, I’m nervous. What if Whoopi comes armed with a study proving that fire really can’t melt steel?

When Michelle took out excuse #1 (“newsflash: George W. Bush is not in office any more”), they resorted to #2.

You mean they sh*t their pants?

Sweet_Thang on August 3, 2009 at 12:17 PM

Joy had this look on her face, as if to say, “I am going to ruin this woman if its the last thing I do.”

No one attacked the CONTENT of the book. No one did any research into the heaping pile of whoopass Michelle has unleashed on various players/policies of the previous administration. All I heard was, “But BUSH…” There was ZERO substance to their counter arguments.

Hopefully, those who watched – both in the audience and at home – will see, at list, a little of that.

Isn’t Shepherd the same one who admitted she’s had more abortions than she can remember, or something like that?

Question? So women actually tune in to watch those people every day? The blond seems ok, but the rest are terrible.
So this is what the fuss is all about every day. I keep hearing View but never saw it before. It STINKS.

Oddly enough, the audience cheered wildly when informed that they were getting a copy free.

BuckeyeSam on August 3, 2009 at 11:57 AM

They’re idiot sheep, and the “Applaud!” sign went up. Maybe the idiot leftism we see from this grotesque audience is all driven by the producers of this pablum?

Jaibones on August 3, 2009 at 12:23 PM

I’m on my way to the gym where the wretched show is forced upon us by the monitors in the cardio area. I gotta tell ya, if one must be forced to watch that tripe on a daily basis having the sound turned off is a necessity. Subtitles instead of their screeching is one remedy, now I just need something to visually substitute for everyone except Elizabeth. At least today I’ll be able to read during MM’s appearance.

I wish I could watch the program, but I can’t get ABC in Israel. If there’s anything I do wish I could get though, it’s the Hulu website, which blocks overseas viewings of their TV show collections. When will they be willing to allow for overseas viewers to watch their stuff at last?

At least I can take the time to plug some of my blog posts, if you please. Let’s see what I have now…

From my politics blog: Fatah reaffirms its hate for Israel.

From my comics blog: indie publishers are coming up with ridiculous Obama worship “projects”.

From my game blog: a tape featuring Sega’s Virtual On, the mecha-battling game.

meh, she’s done better. She was loaded for bear and they treated her pretty well.

I think they gave her a fair shot even knowing that they completely disagreed with her.

Needless to say I watched most of the show waiting for MM to come on. . . Whoopi was pretty good and even headed. Joy wanted to get into it, but MM just filibustered. MM went on the attack by using Joy’s name and it sort of defanged her.

I thought MM looked a little nervous. It was a good appearance, but nothing spectacular. They treated her fair and let her speak.

Whoopi is a huge upgrade from Rosie. If it’s got to be a chick fest, I’d rather Whoopi.

The Bush excuse is a joke–

Obama was elected why??

Not because of experience….obviously…

Not because of his accomplishments…..obviously..

Not because of his associations…..obviously..

But because of his promise to be “change”– If he has broken that promise and is the same old Chicago politician every one agrees is corrupt…..how can his followers still justify supporting him?

His has shredded the only qualification he had and was elected on.

Just called my travel agent.

Thought the whole thing was ridiculous but love Michelle for going on – big points and it had to be amusing for her. The audience was not as rude as I would have thought it would be which makes me hopeful. Joy making a face at the suggestion she read the book was the best – “read the book, read the bill – pshaw!” These ladies are dumb as dirt and should go, appropriately enough, back to discussing backyard gardens.

gopmom on August 3, 2009 at 12:44 PM

Astonishing performance. She was polite, and spoke quickly but firmly on her position. Tactically, she was very smart to bring up the general (and growing) disappointment of those who voted for the “new direction” Obama offered, showing that this wasn’t purely a “rightwing” issue. I think in part Michelle’s rapid-fire delivery, and in part, the self-same bewilderment over the President’s performance, largely rendered Whoopie and Joy (almost) speechless–she had a remarkably easy time quietening them. The book giveaway at the end also was a great move.

bandarlog on August 3, 2009 at 12:44 PM

How is it even possible to NOT know how many abortions you’ve had? Is it – like – you can’t deduct it (yet) so you just don’t bother tracking every time you get the procedure? Who says something like that on national tv? What kind of audience HEARS it and still tunes in to hear more? She’s only JUST figured out how to vote and she screwed that up. Why would any talk show hire her and for what reason? Is she supposed to represent some female demographic in hell? I guess Hell can’t pay for DirecTV and Fox News.

BrideOfRove on August 3, 2009 at 12:44 PM

I can’t say. I have to confess that I don’t follow her career that closely and that I don’t know her lifestory well. I daresay I’m not missing much.

BuckeyeSam on August 3, 2009 at 12:12 PM

I don’t follow her career either. In fact, I’d never heard of her until I read an article online in which the author was discussing Shepherd’s statement about having had so many abortions. I only remembered it because it was shortly after I had read another article about an Obama speech on abortion, in which he claimed that women always “agonize” over the decision and “never” take it lightly. I guess Obama has never met any women like Shepherd (or Whoopi, apparently — although I’d never heard until now about her multiple abortions).

AZCoyote on August 3, 2009 at 12:46 PM

meci on August 3, 2009 at 12:48 PM

Well, if abortion is legal, it’s a darned good thing that these ditzes are the ones getting fixed. The self-selection aspect of the Roe Effect means that there will be fewer and fewer dunderheads like Whoopi in the future. This is a good thing.

Truth be told, in the case of the fools on The View, assisted suicide would work would work for me, too. Heck, if they’re not ready to check out yet, I wouldn’t be opposed to arranging something slightly more coercive.

Obama eventually has to sit down with the Joint Chiefs at the Pentagon (something he hasn’t done since January) and make a judgement based on their input and strategies for winning the war.

He can say yes, to sending in more troops, in which case he will cause a huge fracture in his support from the far left base.

He can say no, and risk losing the war because of his unwillingness to listen to his military experts.

It’s a lose, lose proposition for Obama.

He owns it.

Thunderstorm129 on August 3, 2009 at 12:49 PM

ROTFLMAO.

Splendid summary; with those Spark Notes I would definitely pass the quiz!

MM did a bang-up job. I loved the way she kept deflating the whole equivalence gambit by pointing out how she had ridden Bush-era officials (and would have ridden a McCain Administration) just as hard…and how that fact continually failed to register with Joyless and Whoopsie, who seemed to derive actual pride from not having read more than “some of” (i.e., liner notes) the book.

And, yes, if more politicians were able to express themselves with such crisp, lucid precision we’d have a very different national conversation.

Noocyte on August 3, 2009 at 1:22 PM

fogw on August 3, 2009 at 1:21 PM

I know that. I was speaking from their prospective. If they have their way, they won’t own any of Obama’s presidency, because they have that convenient fallback guy, G.W. It doesn’t matter that Obama found out G.W. was right on a lot of stuff or that he is aping most of G.W.’s policies. When you point it out to the lefty crazies, they always reach for Bush in an attempt to shut out reason.

Rightwingguy on August 3, 2009 at 1:30 PM

Wow – they didn’t even try to say it was BS. Just that Bush was as bad or worse. That’s friggin hilarious.
Exit question for Sherri – how are those trailers looking in New Orleans today? Have you even checked on them since Hopey Changey took over or do you just use them as an excuse on why you voted for the first time. And by the way, no need to look to New Orleans to come up with a reason why you voted. Just look in the mirror. That’s why you voted for the first time – you didn’t do it because you were finally up on the issues.

JeffinOrlando on August 3, 2009 at 1:37 PM

Oh my non-denominational holy power!

I just watched the episode of the view on RealClearPolitics and she obliterated those old bags!

Whoopi came out with a quote that wasn’t even in the book and Joy…lol I have never seen her stutter and stammer so much. She looked worse than she did on Larry King when Ann Coulter handed her her own ass. MM represents the extremely intellectual and rational side of our argument.

GREAT JOB MICHELLE!!!! :) (not that I had any doubts)

TampaBayBull on August 3, 2009 at 1:39 PM

I was just combing through the comments to the vid over at RCP and found this nugget:

You can easily express your political views without disrespecting those around you. She was incredibly rude to these women as a guest on their show. Go back to Fox News.

Yes, really. I replied as follows:

Wow. The ability to look at that clip and emerge with the sense that it was *Malkin* who had been rude has got to stand as a strong candidate for inclusion in a psychological assessment of reality testing…and not on the favorable side of the Likert scale.

Malkin was labeled (“Your group…Right-Wingers”), misquoted, distorted and essentially ridiculed (via the passive-aggressive adolescent eye-roll…only in this case coming from a middle-aged woman) , and repeatedly interrupted. In return, she stayed on-topic, only sounded irritated once or twice (and quickly reined it in), and when interrupted did not do the usual “Will you let me finish!” thing, instead saying how much she wanted to make the point she was making (classic good communications: make more “I” statements than “You” statements, which are generally perceived to be more attacking).

Malkin remained focused and poised in a decidedly hostile setting, resisted distraction and digression, stayed courteous, and made her points with lucidity and precision. I simply cannot imagine this appearing rude to anyone other than one who secretly believes that the arguments supporting their position are too weak to resist refutation, yet are too emotionally invested in those arguments to not resent anyone with the temerity to point that out.

Sad.

Loved it, loved it, loved it! A wise, Filipina woman!

I wish Michelle would have rammed the point home about how the Obama administration has been getting a free ride from the media for over a year now (during the run-up to the election and ever since). She alluded to this about “sunlight being the best disinfectant”. That is the reason she wrote the book because you will not hear about her points anywhere else.

Just saw the video…she kicked liberal butt…Those women are dumber than dirt, and seem proud of it. Does anyone real watch this show?

Epic home run!!! And the ladies of the View were about as nice as I’ve ever seen them being. I hate to say this, but is there any that chance the absence of Barbara Walters was the key to changing the social dynamic to allow this to happen?

Answer: The View!
