LA Weekly wets itself over Obama/Joker poster: “The only thing missing is a noose”
posted at 6:57 pm on August 3, 2009 by Allahpundit
Hey, remember when it was cool to demonize the president, or even the presidential or vice-presidential nominee? Sarahcuda had been on the national stage for all of eight weeks last year before she got the rabid vampire treatment. Ah well. Change has come to America — and to the LA Weekly. Click here and be amazed at the hypocrisy of which our intellectually superior progressive betters are capable.
As for the “noose” reference, I can almost forgive that as irresistible knee-jerk leftist racial demagoguery in the age of Obama. Here was Chris Matthews pulling the same thing on Michelle on his weekend show:
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Welcome back, six months after President Obama’s inauguration, racial comments from the far right have worked their way from below the surface to open season. Take the birthers, the group that’s on the Internet and TV claiming that Barack Obama’s birth certificate is phony, that he was really born in Kenya and that week-long flap over the Harvard professor’s arrest was used by other voices on the far right as an excuse to push this stuff about the President.
(Begin clips)
GLENN BECK: This president I think that exposed himself as a guy over and over and over again who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture. I don’t know what it is.
MICHELLE MALKIN: Well I think he’s a racial opportunist, he took that moment, used a health care conference that was a debacle basically and took this story, which is really just a local parochial law enforcement story to try and insure some sort of moment of his racial authenticity.
RUSH LIMBAUGH: This is something that diminishes the office of the presidency. He, this is, it’s all about him. It’s all about him trying to say and illustrate that he can bring about the end to this racial divide when he was the one that caused all this.
(End clips)
MATTHEWS: Gene is all this dangerous? This new flappery, this nonsense talk that is coming out here?
EUGENE ROBINSON, WASHINGTON POST COLUMNIST: You know, you and I have talked in the past about dog whistle politics.
MATTHEWS: Right.
ROBINSON: This is train whistle politics.
Minor problem #1: As previously noted, Obama is a racial opportunist and not a particularly subtle one at times. Listening to Reverend Wright for 20 years will do that to a man, I guess. If Chrissy finds acknowledging that “dangerous,” there’s an easy solution: Get Obama to stop being such a jackass racial opportunist. Minor problem #2: His attack is framed in the context of Birtherism, as part of a broader “look how kooky they’ve become” lament. Did he bother to mention that Michelle expressly repudiated the Birther crap in a column last year, something which even Media Matters felt compelled to acknowledge?
But back to the poster. I think it’s stupid and was surprised to find that a bunch of other righties on Twitter agree. What’s the point, exactly? I didn’t see “Dark Knight;” was the Joker into socialism? Murder, mayhem, and deficit spending? Wasn’t his salient characteristic the fact that he was … a homicidal maniac? I realize we’re supposed to put nothing past The One but that seems a bridge too far. If people are hot for posters, why not just photoshop that “HOPE” image to make it say “BROKE”?

Think God we have liberals around to show the world how not to be bigoted and hateful:
“Shock Jocks” Opie & Anthony talk rape & violence with their guest “Homeless Charlie.”
“O&A – “Condoleezza Rice”
Charlie – “I’d love to f— that b*tch dude” (laughter)
Charlie – “She’s the F—in man”
O&A – “yeah”
Charlie – “I’d F…that b*tch….”
O&A – “I just imagine the horror in Condoleezza Rice’s face….”
- “(laughter) ….. as she realizes what’s going on”
- “…as you were just holding her down and F’n her.”
Charlie – “punch her all the F’n face, shut the F— up b*tch”
O&A – “that’s exactly what I meant” (laughter in background)
Charlie – “you know F— it …. and George Bush wife? I’d F— that b*tch to death” —
Yes, think God liberals are there to call out the hatred and bigotry of people they disagree with….oh wait….these are liberals.
Well at least some of the leaders of the “progressive” movement don’t act with this much ignorance and hatred….
..except when they are being bigoted, ignorant and hateful:
Liberals have ZERO CREDIBILITY in calling out other people
concerning what is right and wrong in political commentary.
Liberals need to quit whining, get over it,and don’t dish it out if you can’t take it.

…and energy costs skyrocket combined with Obama’s abandoning Afghanistan after their elections.
Obama’s looking for an exit strategy is nothing more than trying to “surrender with style (or taking political hits)”.
Obama’s own man that he put in charge in Afghanistan is going to demand more troops and resources and you can bet that Obama and the democratic lead Congress will deny these requests with spin and cover from the press.
The bottom line though will be that he will go against what the military is requesting to win the fight in the very place Obama campaigned on as the central fight against our enemies.
This will be just another 180′ move from his campaign rhetoric but will have major international implications and show the International community how arrogant and ideologically corrupt Obama is in pushing his socialist agenda.
Obama will be shown to be nothing more than a liar and huckster domestically and internationally, proving how right the millions of people who voted against him were.

Because that is boring, tired, cliche and unhip.
The joker was an anarchist intent on destroying everything that made society what it was, and therein lies the parallel to Obama. While he is not an anarchist, he is an Alinskyite, sewing discord and encouraging chaos, so he can take advantage of the crisis. He is actively trying to destroy the dominance of the private sector by refusing to enact policies that will end the uncertainty and chaos, while he transfers trillions to the public sector.
Anarchy is never an end, it is a means. It cannot exist over time, a tyranny always rises to fill the void. Obama has thus far used crisis to nationalize the banks, the auto industry, and is working on nationalizing the health care and energy industries. And he is doing so using chaos.
The analogy is spot on if you ask me.

B Man on August 4, 2009 at 3:23 AM
Opie’s a liberal, Anthony’s not. And Homeless Charlie was just a crazy drunk guy who spouted off. I seem to recall he slammed Obama too, said a guy with a name like that could never be president.
Jim Treacher on August 4, 2009 at 3:24 AM
Either way, this is not funny and should never have been put forth as humor.
I don’t see how making fun of Obama’s name compares with laughing about brutally raping a women either.
If this had been done and Michelle Obama was inserted for Rice,MSMBC,NBC,CBS,CNN,NY Times,WaPo and many others would have this front and center with these guys getting the “imus” treatment on steroids.
But since it was a Republican,a little faux outrage and then back to business.
But hey, what’s a little rape between friends,a long as they don’t call her a “Nappy headed Hoe” right.
Baxter Greene on August 4, 2009 at 3:46 AM
Presumably that’s why you weren’t listening to them on a paid service.
Jim Treacher on August 4, 2009 at 4:13 AM
Which has zero to do with the bullsh!t hypocrisy exhibited by liberals in what is considered outrageous, bigoted, and over the line political commentary.
Whether I choose to listen to something has nothing to do with the fact that ignorant and hateful commentary is put forth by the same people who get their panties all bunched up if someone simply calls Obama by his own middle name.
I am going to call them out every time on their faux, selective outrage whether it is public, private, or shown to an audience projected on Nancy Pelosi’s wrinkled plastic a$$.

EXACTLY. Satire is biting, shocking and merciless.
This “joker” poster is a masterpiece.
Satire is one of the most powerful tools of political commmentary. It’s pathetic to see conservatives do the “sensitivity dance” about the white-face aspect of this: distraction.

What a bitter disappointment your comment is for me. The poster represents a caricature of chaos. This poster is symbolic of the quintessence of Obama. The chaos of the astroturfing misinformation to the masses with the assistance of a compliant state run media. The economic chaos of the stimulus, cap & trade, Obamascare and whatever else this anti-capitalist will propose in order to remake America into a socialistic utopia.
Americannodash on August 4, 2009 at 2:36 AM
Racist.
Mr Purple on August 4, 2009 at 6:40 AM
The poster is not racist. The poster is brilliantly using the “Joker” character to portray Obama as using chaos to advance socialism. Americannodash on August 4, 2009 at 2:36 AM has it exactly right.

This thread is a microcosm of the GOP.
Note two general camps.
A species of republicans who hover conspicuously “Above the Fray” seeking to confirm in themselves the positive character traits that many believe belong to the ones up there: detached, objective, free-thinking, cultivated…
and a species that looks at the edgy new attacks and says, as Rush said yesterday, “About Damn Time!”
I’m with Rush. The air is way too thin up there, “Above the Fray”, a man can lose consciousness.
jeff_from_mpls on August 4, 2009 at 7:44 AM

cmsinaz on August 4, 2009 at 7:48 AM
I’d suggest that there are far more clever ways to make the same point graphically without re-treading pop culture. That being said, I’ve never understood the point of Twitter.
highhopes on August 4, 2009 at 7:50 AM
Actually, when Rush said “About Damn Time!” yesterday it was in the context of the Town Hall strategy of Republicans.
A National Public Radio type caller confronted Rush about news she had heard on MSNBC about how conservative activists were being recruited and “bussed in” with pre-scripted questions to disrupt the Town Hall meetings going on across the country during the congressional recess.
Rush paused, he said let’s suppose everything you just said is true, which it might or might not be, but for the sake of argument, let’s say it’s true…
Dramatic pause…
“ABOUT DAMN TIME!”
Classic Rush.

Lest anyone thing that I am placing myself “above the fray” with my previous comment,
let me say: I think the poster is brillaint commentary. It is the cries of racism to which I was referring as a mountain.
Before gangbangers co-opted graffiti by tagging street signs to show how tough and brave they are, graffiti often showed with surgical precision the nakedness of the emporer.
This poster is hightech graffiti, and the true message as explained by some of the commenters here is spot on.

It is vile and apparently okay with the liberal MSM since they did nothing about it compared to the full court press they put on Imus for calling the girls basketball team “nappy headed hoes”.
In defense of Jim Treacher (not that he needs my help)though,he’s a sharp intelligent guy,I get the impression he is not defending this commentary but defending the 1 st Amendment right to have this commentary.
They do.
Just like we have the right to call them out on their ignorant hypocrisy and discount their opinions when they have no credibility on this issue.
I just don’t think this is something to joke about and it pisses me off when I see this along with hundreds of other examples over the last eight years of hateful, bigoted commentary directed at Republicans and Christians by the same people that are always putting themselves up as bearers of great moral authority.
You could literally fill this thread up with ignorant bile that liberals spew then whine “truth to power”…”dissent is patriotic”.
You so much as assert that you want Obama’s socialist policies to fail and they flip right around and call you a “racist” and “right wing hate monger”.
liberals double standards and hypocrisy are so transparent that it would be funny if the press and entertainment industry was not so complicit in supporting and pushing this hypocrisy.
When liberals on TV or on the hill start with their whining and faux moral authority routines the first thought that comes to mind immediately is :
Screw you liberals, get over it
liberals have no credibility or right to set down guidelines of what is appropriate and not appropriate.
Many have shown themselves to be the most ignorant, racist, hateful people you will ever meet and that has been very apparent over the last 8 years of constant bogus scandals, illegitimate conspiracy theories, and hateful actions directed at people they disagree with.
So they can pretty much kiss my a$$ and get over it.
Their opinions and “feelings” don’t carry any weight with me until they start practicing what they preach.

I bought a T-shirt and look forward to wearing it out and about. I have a lot of these T-shirts and no one in Louisiana or Mississippi has ever said anything negative to me about them. I’ve gotten a very few mean stares – but a lot of compliments and I’m sure I’ll get many off this shirt.
I’d like to see us wear them at the Tea Parties – although – it’s not the sort of thing the organizers in Louisiana want to encourage. They usually encourage us to wear nice looking clothing with no political message. The revolution is still in the “polite” stage I guess! :D

Next up, Obama as Ozymandias.

My sentiments exactly, B. We make fools of ourselves by taking them seriously when they don’t even take seriously the message of their own words, when they use the jargon of ethics/morality not for meaning/message, but for effect. They don’t want a bona fide discussion of ethics; they want to shut the discussion down.
Hence the appropriate response is not serious debate, but rather, “Kiss my butt”.

I won’t be satisfied until I see the real original, long-form poster.

“What’s the point, exactly?”
Well, it’s been demonstrated that the Gotham of The Dark Knight is based on Chicago, and not New York as most people think.

Yup. He’s the post-racial president. Or, to put it another way, anything anyone posts about him must be racially motivated.

So many words about a poster that doesn’t need any. That’s the point. It makes its point without them.
Glad to see that the T-shirts are out there and getting popular. It’s just another tool in the fight.
