LA Weekly wets itself over Obama/Joker poster: “The only thing missing is a noose”

posted at 6:57 pm on August 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

Hey, remember when it was cool to demonize the president, or even the presidential or vice-presidential nominee? Sarahcuda had been on the national stage for all of eight weeks last year before she got the rabid vampire treatment. Ah well. Change has come to America — and to the LA Weekly. Click here and be amazed at the hypocrisy of which our intellectually superior progressive betters are capable.

As for the “noose” reference, I can almost forgive that as irresistible knee-jerk leftist racial demagoguery in the age of Obama. Here was Chris Matthews pulling the same thing on Michelle on his weekend show:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Welcome back, six months after President Obama’s inauguration, racial comments from the far right have worked their way from below the surface to open season. Take the birthers, the group that’s on the Internet and TV claiming that Barack Obama’s birth certificate is phony, that he was really born in Kenya and that week-long flap over the Harvard professor’s arrest was used by other voices on the far right as an excuse to push this stuff about the President.

(Begin clips)

GLENN BECK: This president I think that exposed himself as a guy over and over and over again who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture. I don’t know what it is.

MICHELLE MALKIN: Well I think he’s a racial opportunist, he took that moment, used a health care conference that was a debacle basically and took this story, which is really just a local parochial law enforcement story to try and insure some sort of moment of his racial authenticity.

RUSH LIMBAUGH: This is something that diminishes the office of the presidency. He, this is, it’s all about him. It’s all about him trying to say and illustrate that he can bring about the end to this racial divide when he was the one that caused all this.

(End clips)

MATTHEWS: Gene is all this dangerous? This new flappery, this nonsense talk that is coming out here?

EUGENE ROBINSON, WASHINGTON POST COLUMNIST: You know, you and I have talked in the past about dog whistle politics.

MATTHEWS: Right.

ROBINSON: This is train whistle politics.

Minor problem #1: As previously noted, Obama is a racial opportunist and not a particularly subtle one at times. Listening to Reverend Wright for 20 years will do that to a man, I guess. If Chrissy finds acknowledging that “dangerous,” there’s an easy solution: Get Obama to stop being such a jackass racial opportunist. Minor problem #2: His attack is framed in the context of Birtherism, as part of a broader “look how kooky they’ve become” lament. Did he bother to mention that Michelle expressly repudiated the Birther crap in a column last year, something which even Media Matters felt compelled to acknowledge?

But back to the poster. I think it’s stupid and was surprised to find that a bunch of other righties on Twitter agree. What’s the point, exactly? I didn’t see “Dark Knight;” was the Joker into socialism? Murder, mayhem, and deficit spending? Wasn’t his salient characteristic the fact that he was … a homicidal maniac? I realize we’re supposed to put nothing past The One but that seems a bridge too far. If people are hot for posters, why not just photoshop that “HOPE” image to make it say “BROKE”?

peacenprosperity on August 3, 2009 at 9:56 PM

Why does the Left think we need them to tell us what’s racist?

Their position seems to be:
1. The creator hid a racial slur in this poster.
2. The public is too stupid to recognize this.
3. The Leftist Race Police see the racial overtones and complete the picture for the stupid masses by mentioning a noose.

But there isn’t a noose in the poster.

I’m surprised to find that the same type of comments (more like insults) on this thread can be found on the liberal websites and blogs. Only the names have been changed. It doesn’t seem like we’re getting anywhere.

Obama has built a cult of personality and things like this posters are the most appropriate response. Destroying his Halo is the maain goal. If reasoned argument or seeing the obvious was the only best tool we wouldn’t even be having this discussion about a President Obama. It would have been exposed as a hoax a long time ago.

Sorry this poster is the exact route to getting to the image driven people who automatically cling to Obama. Use of a reverse positive image of Obama’s cult pictures and the word “Socialism”? Damn good stuff I hope the person or persons responsinbile mass produce it on every blank wall.

The masses who watch MSM think the whole country is behind him. They need to understand the amount of pissed off people out there before they will engage their thinking caps.

AP, Why so socialist?

Wow, I have been wearing a t-shirt with this image on it for months. *patting myself on the back* I bought it because I was so furious after Obozo could not stop laughing about Americans suffering from his lousy economy on 60 minutes. The next day, I bought the shirt from Zazzle .

I would never own Barry’s symbol or posters with just the wording changed because it is like free advertising. I don’t think his drones and hopium addicts can read too well. Before the election, Craig Ferguson said the “Hope” posters were dangerous because they reminded him of “Obsession” cologne ads. God love him!

I wonder what the Obama campaign people who printed up that Obama knock-off of the Lenin poster would say about someone claiming that the idiot messiah is a socialist?

BTW, I don’t believe that The Precedent is a socialist. He is not concerned with anything but exacting revenge on us and the West. He wants to foment chaos and watch our nation burn. Socialist policies are just the best way to get that started.

If people are hot for posters, why not just photoshop that “HOPE” image to make it say “BROKE”?

Why not both? It’s not like Obama is a force for freedom and liberty in the world. He supports Ahmadinejad, Zelaya, Chavez and that Marxist that was stoking Islamic violence in Kenya. Don’t forget Ayers and Wright. Obama has openly allied himself with tyrants and villains so why shouldn’t he be portrayed as one himself, Allahpundit?

A day or two ago I looked at that Obama poster for less than a minute yet I can remember virtually every detail. It’s been seared into my mind and I’ll probably remember it for the rest of my life. Whereas, I’ve seen numerous photoshops like your suggestion of replacing “HOPE” with “BROKE”, and while some of them are also very nice, I don’t remember any specific one?

I am late to the party but I offer my two cents nevertheless.
To AP’s query about the purpose, if I am allowed to go philosophical.

The main characterstic of Joker is not that he is violent or psychopath (although he is) but that he is a nihilist (“He just likes things to burn”)

And socialism, no matter what its starting point, or intent, is nihilistic in its effect. I should know, I belong to a socialist republic.

I think if you haven’t seen the movie, you must if you want to get the poster. All this analysis and intellectualizing just doesn’t do it. When I saw the poster, I had a visceral recognition – it made perfect sense in a way I have no words to explain. But I think most people who saw the movie will agree that the poster is an incredibly powerful portrait of Obama.

I would say to Mr. Treacher that just as Orwell pointed out that the pacifists of his day were objectively fascist, so Obama, despite his rhetoric, is objectively a destructivly chaotic force. In both cases, the results belied their words.

JackOkie on August 3, 2009 at 11:11 PM

[Jim Treacher on August 3, 2009 at 10:30 PM]

Sure, Obama is far from anarchism as an end, but he definitely embraces anarchism as a means, just as Mao did when he remarked “All is chaos under the heavens, and the situation is excellent.” IIRC, Obama’s mentor — Marshall(?) — was a Maoist and I have little doubt Obama has internalized the benefits of some controlled anarchy.

Obama’s main problem, however, is that he’s a Lightworker. He does have the “expose your enemies, apsect of Mao’s quote down pat, though, and using it as best as Lightworker can.

Dusty on August 3, 2009 at 11:14 PM

That poster needs to go viral – and Conservatives need to embrace it. When you’re talking about symbolism and reaching an audience – and conveying truth – that poster is the epitome of “brevity is the soul of wit”.

It says it all. Paints Obama in his true colors – and we DO KNOW NOW what his true colors are. Hey, if he’s not going to be truthful then we need to call him out and this poster is a very good way to do that.

The poster will go viral and stay there for some time – I don’t know who printed it – but they’re genuises. I think it will become one of the symbols of new Internet Conservatives who are willing to take this nation back by fighting fire with fire.

For the old fuddy-duddy Conservatives – I expect tomorrow we’ll be getting all kinds of stories from them about how the poster is “hurting” Conservatism along with stupid polls saying that the poster is only liked by Southerners so it must be racist or something.

To the Fuddy-duddy’s … you guys are … “funny”.

I didn’t see “Dark Knight;” was the Joker into socialism?

Oh dear God.

You know I’ve got nothing but love for you, AP, but sometimes…

Seriously, you really need to see the movie. It’s a legitimate cultural touchstone.

Anyways, I think the poster works on two levels:

1) Most obviously, it’s just a silly play on those idealized Obama posters we’re all so sick of. In this vein it says “Hey, maybe this Obama guy is actually more scary than inspirational.”

2) On a deeper level… Dark Knight is an essentially conservative movie. One main plot line revolves around public corruption, while the other is Joker’s need to prove that everyone is, deep down, as sick as he is. The climaxes of the movie are when ordinary people, hardened criminals, and Batman himself all prove they can make difficult, unpopular moral choices so that evil doesn’t win. In this sense, the posters evoke the visceral sense of a struggle against those who try to coerce us into a morally wrong choice — here, Barack Obama introducing a coercive socialism.

But it’s possible that when they were actually writing the script Obama hadn’t become a big deal yet.

That line still completely applies to O tho.

B Man on August 4, 2009 at 1:47 AM

I see Obama without his mask as more of a Freddy Krueger with his “fingers” representing “ObamaCare”, “Kneecap-N-Tradeaway”, etc.

A Nightmare on Elm Street Pennsylvania Ave.

Now the liberals and their friends in the media are all of a sudden concerned, and exposing their selective outrage concerning how the POTUS is being portrayed.

There is not one person in this country with an IQ higher than Senator Kennedy’s blood alcohol level that does not remember the hatred and bigotry spewed by liberals against President Bush and anyone who they disagreed with politically.

Here is a little trip down memory lane concerning the Assassination fantasies liberals espoused on a daily basis:

Here is more “intelligent commentary” from the “tolerant and open minded” crowd:

How progressive!!!!!!!!!!

8 years of this bigotry and hatred and all of the sudden liberals have found their moral compass.

What a joke!!!!!!

Oh boo hoo. The LA Weekly morons are probably the same smug mouth-breathers who made and wore these t-shirts. “We’re hipsters!…aren’t we!??!”:

“Death of a President:” Box-office bomb

By Michelle Malkin • October 30, 2006 11:35 PM

Where was little Crissy boy’s concern for what is dangerous when the liberals hatred for Bush grew so insane that they made a movie depicting his assassination:

http://michellemalkin.com/2006/10/30/death-of-a-president-box-office-bomb/

Bush Derangement Syndrome fizzles in movie theaters:

The provocative film “Death of a President,” which imagines the assassination of George W. Bush, bombed at the North American box office with a meager $282,000 grossed from 143 theaters in its first weekend.

But this is “speaking truth to power” right liberals.

Baxter Greene on August 4, 2009 at 2:06 AM

What’s the point, exactly?

Maybe the point is to ruin Obama’s face. That supposition implies an explanation as to why the photograph remains so unsatisfactory.

Kralizec on August 4, 2009 at 2:08 AM

btw, for anyone here who hasn’t seen the dark knight, see it now so you know and understand this image better.
It’s perfect.

B Man on August 3, 2009 at 9:50 PM

I agree. Watch the movie. Obama is a truly fallen man.

His demons are big ones.

Wow. I’m surprised Allah would defend racism like this.

I guess he too must be a racist. Only a racist would post this obviously racist photoshop of a racist.

Mr Purple on August 4, 2009 at 2:12 AM

Remember, the same people that will call this poster “racist”
and “hateful” had this to say about the death of Tony Snow.
(comments approved by the LA Times):

More recently we were treated to the reaction of the left upon the death of Tony Snow. In a moderated comments thread at the L.A. Times website, the following comments (and many more like them) were approved by moderators:

There is special place in hell for Mr. Snow. As a co-conspirator of the Bush administration, I have no special sympathy for him. I only wish his suffering were more prolonged.

I hope he suffered at the end. Just a terrible person.

But don’t you dare call Obama by his middle name Hussein.

Baxter Greene on August 4, 2009 at 2:18 AM

I’m telling you, that image with the word socialism or “Why so socialist?” is a game-changer.

It will tap into primordial forces of the human psyche in a hip way as if to say:

“The gloves are off maggot, and you’re goin down.”

“You think you are gonna kill off my Mom and Dad?”

“You think hope means me losing a job, and paying for other peoples’ abortions as if I’m pulling lever to release the gas at Auschwitz?”

I’m telling you, after seeing the townhalls on the Obamacare, people are are VERY close to snapping. Did anybody for a split second think that some of those elitist punks like Sebelius and Specter might be rushed by the crowd.

How much more do we have to take before someone really snaps and goes off on the government finally crossing the line of millions of Americans?

Sapwolf on August 4, 2009 at 2:22 AM

WHY SO SOCIALIST?

BlameAmericaLast on August 4, 2009 at 2:26 AM

Here is some real “intelligent” commentary coming from the same people that will be outraged if anyone talks about Obama’s kids or calls him a socialist:

I(Michelle Malkin) made this point back in 2007, in a post that set forth some hate speech from leftists. Here are some examples:

National Public Radio legal affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg:

[I]f there is retributive justice [Sen. Jesse Helms] will get AIDS from a transfusion, or one of his grandchildren will get it.

USA Today syndicated columnist Julianne Malveaux, on Clarence Thomas:

I hope his wife feeds him lots of eggs and butter and he dies early like many black men do, of heart disease.

Washington Post syndicated columnist Richard Cohen:

For hypocrisy, for sheer gall, [Newt] Gingrich should be hanged.

Comedian and (former) talk show host Craig Kilborn [Caption under footage of George W. Bush]:
Snipers Wanted

Members of the St. Petersburg Democratic Club:

And then there’s Rumsfeld who said of Iraq “We have our good days and our bad days.” We should put this S.O.B. up against a wall and say “This is one of our bad days” and pull the trigger.

Actor Alec Baldwin on Conan O’Brien:

[I]f we were in other countries, we would all right now, all of us together, all of us together would go down to Washington and we would stone Henry Hyde to death! We would stone him to death! [crowd cheers] Wait! Shut up! Shut up! No shut up! I’m not finished. We would stone Henry Hyde to death and we would go to their homes and we’d kill their wives and their children. We would kill their families.

Comedian Chris Rock:

If President Clinton would pardon me I would whip Starr’s ass right now. I will get a crew from Brooklyn and we will stomp him like, like, we’re Savion Glover. We’ll stomp him like it’s bringing da noise.

Director Spike Lee on Charlton Heston:

Shoot him with a .44 caliber Bulldog.

James Carville on Ken Starr:

He’s one more mistake away from not having any kneecaps.

Syndicated columnist Alexander Cockburn:

There is a sound case to be made for dropping a tactical nuclear weapon on the Cuban section of Miami. The move would be applauded heartily by most Americans. Alas, Operation Good Riddance would require the sort of mature political courage sadly lacking in Washington, D.C., these days.

Columnist, author, media pundit, journalist, and newspaper editor Dan Savage:

My plan? Get close enough to Bauer to give him the flu, which, if I am successful, will lay him flat just before the New Hampshire primary. I’ll go to Bauer’s campaign office and cough on everything. Phones and pens. Staplers and staffers. I even hatch a plan to infect the candidate himself; I’ll keep a pen in my mouth until Bauer drops by his offices to rally the troops. And when he does, I’ll approach him and ask for his autograph, handing him the pen from my flu-virus-incubating mouth.

That column also appeared on Salon.com. It was a little more than hate “speech” — the guy actually did try to give Gary Bauer the flu.

How progressive!!!!!!!!!!

What a bitter disappointment your comment is for me. The poster represents a caricature of chaos. This poster is symbolic of the quintessence of Obama. The chaos of the astroturfing misinformation to the masses with the assistance of a compliant state run media. The economic chaos of the stimulus, cap & trade, Obamascare and whatever else this anti-capitalist will propose in order to remake America into a socialistic utopia.

Americannodash on August 4, 2009 at 2:36 AM

Be careful when you mention “game-changer”.
There have been many “game changers” when it comes to Obama.

I do think tho that the tide has turned. Or IS turning against him now.

I think the REAL sparks will fly when unemployment hits 10%.
All those people losing their jobs and Obama SMILING every day, looking cool, calm, throughly enjoying everything spending our money while America loses it’s jobs.

On “this week” the guy from the WSJ said people are saving too much of their money right now. That’s what happens when you have all that debt to pay off and you’re terrified of losing your job.

Then you have O out there SMILING… total disconnect.
You hear (I hear) nothing but talking points from lefties.

I don’t know what’s coming, but I don’t think O will be smiling when it hits.
And we’ve still got to deal with the guy for 3 and a half years.

B Man on August 4, 2009 at 2:36 AM

I didn’t see “Dark Knight;

Allahpundit;

I’m in the middle of watching Dark Knight right now, for the first time, and believe me when I tell you, AP, that when the Joker slides down a pile of cash 20 feet tall before ordering his men to poor gasoline on and burn it—and then paying absolutely zero attention while the flames lick higher and higher—with his back turned… you won’t possibly be able to avoid thinking of Obama in that moment.

Trust me.

FloatingRock on August 4, 2009 at 2:42 AM

I think this poster was creepier, especially given the context. And they made this one, themselves.

progressoverpeace on August 4, 2009 at 2:45 AM

I remember watching TDK in the theater and I was mesmerized by the Joker.

He was SO crazy so over the top, even the music sounded crazy.
No limits to his madness. And enjoying every minute of it.

One other thing that is kind of good is we don’t really know where the Joker came from. No information.
What’s his real name? Don’t know.

The similarities are good.

B Man on August 4, 2009 at 2:49 AM

FINALLY A REAL PICTURE OF OBAMA WITHOUT THE PHOTOSHOP ENHANCEMENTS
.
.
AND WHAT DO YOU EXPECT A GUY TO LOOK WHOSE SINISTER PLAN TO TAKE OVER HEALTH-CARE SO HE CAN REPLACE IT WITH A SALVAGION-PILL TO ALL THE RETIRED.
.
.
VERY SMART. THAT WOULD SAVE NOT ONLY HEALTHCARE COST FOR THE ELDERLY BUT ALSO SOCIAL SECURITY AND AS A BONUS WILL GIVE A LOT OF TAX REVENUE FROM THE ESTATE TAX
.
.
GEITNER DID NOT MISSPOKE WHEN HE SAID THE KEY TO REDUCING THE DEFICIT WAS THE TAKE-OVER OF HEALTH-CARE.
.
.
MAY BE A SLIP-OF-THE-TONG BUT I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF THIS MUSH-HEAD WAS JUST QUOTING THE GREAT JOKER
