LA Weekly wets itself over Obama/Joker poster: “The only thing missing is a noose”

posted at 6:57 pm on August 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

Hey, remember when it was cool to demonize the president, or even the presidential or vice-presidential nominee? Sarahcuda had been on the national stage for all of eight weeks last year before she got the rabid vampire treatment. Ah well. Change has come to America — and to the LA Weekly. Click here and be amazed at the hypocrisy of which our intellectually superior progressive betters are capable.

As for the “noose” reference, I can almost forgive that as irresistible knee-jerk leftist racial demagoguery in the age of Obama. Here was Chris Matthews pulling the same thing on Michelle on his weekend show:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Welcome back, six months after President Obama’s inauguration, racial comments from the far right have worked their way from below the surface to open season. Take the birthers, the group that’s on the Internet and TV claiming that Barack Obama’s birth certificate is phony, that he was really born in Kenya and that week-long flap over the Harvard professor’s arrest was used by other voices on the far right as an excuse to push this stuff about the President.

(Begin clips)

GLENN BECK: This president I think that exposed himself as a guy over and over and over again who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture. I don’t know what it is.

MICHELLE MALKIN: Well I think he’s a racial opportunist, he took that moment, used a health care conference that was a debacle basically and took this story, which is really just a local parochial law enforcement story to try and insure some sort of moment of his racial authenticity.

RUSH LIMBAUGH: This is something that diminishes the office of the presidency. He, this is, it’s all about him. It’s all about him trying to say and illustrate that he can bring about the end to this racial divide when he was the one that caused all this.

(End clips)

MATTHEWS: Gene is all this dangerous? This new flappery, this nonsense talk that is coming out here?

EUGENE ROBINSON, WASHINGTON POST COLUMNIST: You know, you and I have talked in the past about dog whistle politics.

MATTHEWS: Right.

ROBINSON: This is train whistle politics.

Minor problem #1: As previously noted, Obama is a racial opportunist and not a particularly subtle one at times. Listening to Reverend Wright for 20 years will do that to a man, I guess. If Chrissy finds acknowledging that “dangerous,” there’s an easy solution: Get Obama to stop being such a jackass racial opportunist. Minor problem #2: His attack is framed in the context of Birtherism, as part of a broader “look how kooky they’ve become” lament. Did he bother to mention that Michelle expressly repudiated the Birther crap in a column last year, something which even Media Matters felt compelled to acknowledge?

But back to the poster. I think it’s stupid and was surprised to find that a bunch of other righties on Twitter agree. What’s the point, exactly? I didn’t see “Dark Knight;” was the Joker into socialism? Murder, mayhem, and deficit spending? Wasn’t his salient characteristic the fact that he was … a homicidal maniac? I realize we’re supposed to put nothing past The One but that seems a bridge too far. If people are hot for posters, why not just photoshop that “HOPE” image to make it say “BROKE”?

I’m not too concerned by the demonization of guy who’s healthcare legislation includes the degradation of our health system, leaving seniors to die if they’re not cost-effective, rationing of healthcare, and killing private industry.

Someone made a poster of him made up to be a comic book villain? Aww. Excuse me as I don’t give a flying crap.

So jokers are now slang for “Blacks” ?

Or are we politically correcting any attempt to paint a president in a negative light ?

William Amos on August 3, 2009 at 7:02 PM

RBMN on August 3, 2009 at 7:03 PM

Tch. Obama wishes he were as popular as the Joker.

Emily M. on August 3, 2009 at 7:03 PM

As I understand it, the Heath Ledger film version of the Joker viewed himself as a pure anarchist, an agent of chaos a la Bukharin’s statement that ‘Destruction is beautiful’. Or at least that’s what I think the screenwriters were getting at. The philosophical underpinnings of Batman movies aside, the Obama as Joker posters are funny, a kind of ironic counterpoint to those ubiquitous Che teeshirts and posters. I don’t see how anyone anywhere could see racist undertones here, since the Joker is white. And red. And green. But hey, that’s just me.

troyriser_gopftw on August 3, 2009 at 7:04 PM

“Why so self-reliant?”

Cicero43 on August 3, 2009 at 7:04 PM

The Joker was more an anarchist, a guy who just liked to watch the world burn. I suppose some could believe Obama has that same motivation. That’s just a shallow understanding of his motives, in my opinion.

Esthier on August 3, 2009 at 7:04 PM

Remember when some photographer took a photo of McCain and made him look like a monster or something?

And of course, where Bush was concerned, everything was acceptable. It did not matter how obscene or violent it was.

These people are such cry babies. They can dish it out, but they suck at taking this.

This is not racial, it is just a jab at a joke of a president who played a joke on America by running as something he was not.

The joke is on us.

Terrye on August 3, 2009 at 7:05 PM

This reminds me of the Mohammed cartoon BS. all that’s missing is a seething leftist with “Behead those who insult Obama” sign.

As for the image itself, I’d rather see Obama’s face with Lenin’s facial hair or something else. But at least mocking Dear Leader is being seen as edgy and subverserve. That’s a start.

trubble on August 3, 2009 at 7:06 PM

Why do leftard “artists” get to piss in a bottle, have sex on stage, and write scripts filled to the hilt with gay sex references, and that’s all cool and enlightened…

and they squeal like little girls when we make an allusion to The Dark Knight?

If you saw the movie and you remember what Alfred said about the Joker, you get it.

If you didn’t see the movie by definition you suck and don’t deserve to know the references.

William Amos on August 3, 2009 at 7:08 PM

BTW, I never saw Heath Ledger’s Joker, either. But I think the poster is brilliant. One could be anyone beneath that pancake makeup. And I suspect that’s at least part of the message. The real Obama has finally stood up, and yes, despite the hysteria among Chrissie Matthews and the rest of the MSM, he has indeed shown himself to be a socialist underneath his facade of moderation.

ProfessorMiao on August 3, 2009 at 7:08 PM

Sensitive about their boy in the WH, aren’t they?

I think the point was that Obama is a joker, meaning that he’s a liar, deceiver, etc. But if you have to explain it, it probably isn’t clear what you were trying to say. Eh.

Not a big deal – dissent is patriotic, after all.

Apparently, though, making out anybody to be the Joker – a well known pop culture reference with no racial connotations – is now “racist.” If they did it to Palin or McCain, it would just mean that they were ruthless criminals and killers bent on inflicting mayhem. It would have received glowing articles in New York magazine and the LA Timesa – coined as “the new agitprop.”

Everything is “racist,” you see, because Obama is half black. Or…something.

My son did just that, but in lieu of “BROKE” he just put “LESS” on the end of “HOPE”

Of course, since many African Americans live below the poverty line in America, that’s also “racist.” Or something. Mark my words – the second you put that on a poster, that’s going to be the new faux outrage of the day.

I don’t know. It’s their warped and hilariously inconsistent cultural/political paradigm. Let them figure it out.

What’s the point, exactly? I didn’t see “Dark Knight;” was the Joker into socialism? Murder, mayhem, and deficit spending?

Eh. I wouldn’t carry the metaphor/imagery too far. Above everything else, I think it shows a desire of someone to go where “thou shalt not tread” and that is to make him into a Joke. Remember when the late night comedy writers were lamenting “he’s just too cool, there’s nothing to make fun of!” Well, this may just be some pent up “creativity” here.

Obama as the Joker….well his whole administration is one big, destructive joke is it not? Yeah….and then of course as we all get upset about the destruction he’s unleashing on the nation he will slyly reply…”why so serious?”

I think it’s a great idea. And not at all racist. I think maybe the whole reason the king makers on the left moved Obama to the top of the deck is they were hoping to have a leftist who was free from ridicule because they could hang anyone who dare mock him or his policies as racist.
Heck they knew many on the right are just about spineless enough to cave to it…yep they’ll all be sure to keep any dissent as high brow as possible to avoid being called racist…and of course it will all bore the masses to death and no real outrage will be generated.

flyfishingdad on August 3, 2009 at 7:24 PM

…the Joker described himself as an agent of chaos. Look at our country right now…

Emily M.

Excellent point!

The left has some fictional barrier set up that any criticism of President Obama is deemed racist… that barrier needs be broken, especially in a democracy that prides itself on free speech.

Comparing President Obama to a crazy joker makes sense on several levels – he is tearing apart our nation. As insane as the fictional Batman movie Joker appeared, Obama is certainly in life just as irrational…

Exactly what sort of democracy do we have that condemns every critique of our leading civil servant? Do we have free speech or not?

Democrats ripped Sarah Palin and her kids apart in the popular media and saddled her with years of debt from legal action in defense of ridiculous ethics charges. Democrats spent eight years comparing Pres. Bush and V. Pres. Cheney to Satan. So now a picture of Obozo as a Joker is somehow off limits?

It’s APPROPRIATE, especially in a nation that prides itself on free speech.

I don’t know – not having been there and not seeing all the facts – what role race played in that, but I think it’s fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two that he Cambridge police acted stupidly…

OH I love that!

I sure hope this doesn’t instigate a whole slew of imaginative and disturbing renditions of our President, because that would be wrong.

It might be time to start supervising the vehicles and expressions of public opinion a little more deliberately so that state-run media will finally respect us.
