Video: Michelle talks health care, the economy, and Gatesgate on “This Week”
posted at 1:10 pm on August 2, 2009 by Allahpundit
The boss just posted her round-up of the morning’s events (“civil, if slightly strained”) so read that for a recap. Kudos to Stephanopoulos for having her on despite the predictable screeching from the left and for giving her a rare shot at a roundtable discussion. In three years of watching her on Fox, I can’t remember a single case of that happening.
The first clip is the roundtable, the second is the slightly awkward greenroom discussion about Gatesgate afterward. Click the images to watch. If you can’t devote 20 minutes to the first, skip ahead to the last four minutes for the exchange about racial politics and “teachable moments.” Incidentally, shortly before this aired, TurboTax Tim dropped by the set to tell Steph that The One might just have to break his promise and raise taxes on the middle class after all. Surprise.

The “Boss” is way to informed for the putzes on that panel. The looks of disdain were palpable. She was the smartest person in THAT room by far.

Al Hunt looks a little nervous and uptight…Cynthia has a little jaw clinch going on

So glad you’re back, Michelle. I’ve miss you a lot.

A teachable moment?? Teach this… Dr. Orly Taitz filed this document in California Superior Court on 8-1-2009 claiming she got it via subpoena from no less than Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Come on man, you just knew there was a reason Obama appointed her SecState. Game over man…. Game Over….
doriangrey on August 2, 2009 at 1:24 PM
Perhaps, but this unbiased, paragon of virtue (aka Stephanopoulos, who was senior political adviser to Bill Clinton and Clinton’s communications director) couldn’t help respond to everything Michelle said with a sigh of exasperation. He immediately questioned and/or disagreed with everything she said while nodding in agreement with all the other distinguished guests.
Add Stephanopoulos to the definition of “tool” along with Matt Lauer.

Watched it this morning. I thought Michelle did great, but she was definitely “holding back” a little. When she’s on FOX, she usually comes out with both barrels blazing. I guess she wants to be invited back on This Week.
UltimateBob on August 2, 2009 at 1:25 PM
She looked great. She was also smarter then anyone on the panel.
That said, no disrespect, pull the hair back, so when they show the side shot, people see your face. Also don’t mention the book. People will find it.
I hope she is invited back, and she will continue to improve.
Truth is on her side.

I love this tweet:
Yeah right he only has ppl with brains and gravitas. Katrina vandel Huevel said on his show that Jimmy Carter and Al Gore were the greatest speakers of her time. That’s brains? He’s had Arriana Huffington on his show too. I don’t think of intellectual gravitas when I think of HuffPo.
terryannonline on August 2, 2009 at 1:33 PM
Could Cynthia Tucker inject any more botox to her face?!
Anyway, Michelle did great, but I do I agree that she held back a little.
Boy George still kissing Obama’s ass. Defending him throughout the whole roundtable like a good little socialist he is.

I didn’t know who Cindy Tucker was until I watched the clip. Man, if looks could kill, she would be in a cell next to Gates for killing Ms. Malkin. She is obviously a liberal tool, and if she doesn’t know what Gates was arrested for, and thinks the 1st Amendment gives him a free ride, then she is right not to believe in “teachable moments”, cause she is unteachable.

MM did a great job considering the entire panel seemed to be against her. It wasn’t much of a book promotion but it’s good to see her getting her views on TV. I’m still not sure why she isn’t a regular on the prime time shows on FOX.
USAF_RET on August 2, 2009 at 1:47 PM
1. Yes, there was racial profiling involved. But Gates and Obama were the one who was doing it. Crowley was dispatched to the scene with no knowledge of the race of the suspect.
2. MM nails it. ObamaCare transitions us from redistribution of wealth to redistribution of health, rationing health care for senior citizens so as to grant health care to illegal aliens. It’s a liberty issue that subordinates our health care to bureaucrat bungling, political spoils and vote-buying.

Brat4life on August 2, 2009 at 1:51 PM
BTW I have to say I love how the media is trying SO HARD to make Obama’s falling poll numbers all about this gates snafu.
Its the economy stupid.
And Michelle you have to watch the lefts “Oh you heartless big meanie conservatives” class warfare garbage. Should have told them “How about Obama creating jobs instead of forcing people to live off their unemployment benefits ?”
That would have been a better way to phrase that. The left has gotten good at any attempt to cut programs = hatrid of the poor.
William Amos on August 2, 2009 at 1:53 PM
I think Michelle was off on unemployment, primarily the point about unemployment benefits being extended, during the Clinton years there were plenty of jobs available, but some people took advantage of benefits and and didn’t accept viable work. That situation isn’t true in the current climate, there simply aren’t many jobs available.
A better cure would be to open up oil and coal, which would have a multi-layered effect of not just providing direct employment, but revitalizing the economy through lower fuel prices. The direct and inderect impact of opening up oil and coal production would probably be enough in and of itself to lift the country out of the recession.
I am not going to get into how good strategically opening up our oil and coal production would be, that is another discussion.
Rode Werk on August 2, 2009 at 1:54 PM
Michelle looks just like the rest of us feel when we’re in a room full of liberals. The conversation in our heads goes something like this:
“My God these people are so fuc*ing stupid. Must not say that out that loud. Must not say that out that loud.”

MM’s first time. Outnumbered. But Cynthia Tucker is about 99% less then anyone on this site. I hope she will do better on The View.
I had hoped for her to do better. But I haven’t ever had that pressure.
I love Pajama’s Media. But it is still a little 2nd rate, but moving up. A strong conservative Senator, or Rep, or Author needs to DEMAND to go on Maddow or Olby. Or CNN. DEMAND!!!! A brave lib would have demanded to debate Limbaugh. They haven’t!!!they are scared! We shouldn’t be. Whoever goes on MSNBC, even if we have to humiliate them to do so, is the new Reagan. No fear. Just truth. That’s all Reagan had.
tottoritodd on August 2, 2009 at 2:04 PM
There were a few great moments, but I think Hunt’s taking a page from Obama’s book was nice. After discussing the situation and injecting his view he says he doesn’t know the facts.
Why do idiots still insist on crying “racial profiling” when discussing the Gates incident?
Police officer responds to 911 call about a possible B&E. Police officer finds a person in the house – asks for proof of residence.
Wait – I see now – he unfairly profiled the person in a house that a witness thought may have been broken into as the person who may have broken in.
I say take his badge.

This is all going on while citizen Joe has just finished his 30th job interview. “Happy Days Are Here Again” is going to last exactly six weeks. By the time congress sits down again citizen Joe will have been on his 50th interview, and he won’t be toe-tapping. 1979 move over, ’cause 2010 is going to be a humdinger.

I will repeat my question since no ring wing nut wants to answer. Should the government get rid of medicare? Because according to conservatives the government shouldn’t be in the health care business. One more question, should the gov also outsource the military health care to a private company?
liberal343 on August 2, 2009 at 2:23 PM
That would be ideal, liberal, because i’ve been dealing with a health care issue in the military for over 6 months without a resolution.

Sad, really. Its not too late to seek help..remember, its never too late to pull your head out of your ass and start to live a real life based in real values.
Itchee Dryback on August 2, 2009 at 2:30 PM
Hospitals already treat the uninsured. The only limit is extended stay. You could get rid of Medicare and not miss it.
The military gives their service to the government. They risk their lives to portect the society. That is a special case that causes special requirements.
Honestly look a British health care to see how bad it can get. There is a limit to any supplies. If you throw millions of new people into the system that depletes the health care for all.
Workers can and should get healthcare. The poor should get lesser health care. Currently its a user system which means that those who contribute to it via insurance or paying their bills SHOULD get better care and more services than those who only abuse the system without adding anything.
William Amos on August 2, 2009 at 2:30 PM
Hey lefties ask youself why if Obama’s plan is working why are we even talking about needing to extend unemployment ?
Talk about a left wing disconnect. Admit it Obama and the Congress have been major failures.
William Amos on August 2, 2009 at 2:31 PM
It is unfortunate that the Gates case continues to be a discussion about racial profiling when it is clear that case had nothing to do with racial profiling. Shame on those who still pretend that it does.
The Gates case is a matter of the individual’s right of free speech vs. a police officer’s right to arrest (or at least detain) someone who is hindering their investigation.
Clearly Crowley felt Gate was uncooperative to the degree that the investigation into the reported burglary of Gate’s home was being hindered, and Crowley reacted in a way most officers – including the Black officer on the scene – felt appropriate.
It should be pointed out as well the irony of Gates claiming of being emblematic of this country’s problem with racism to an African American mayor, an African American governor, and of course an African American president.
DarkKnight3565 on August 2, 2009 at 2:32 PM
So in your opinion the government should let a private company run the military health care?
What about Medicare? Should it be dropped? Last time I checked it was government run. BTW Michelle Malkin’s argument was so bad is now a Huntington Post front page story
liberal343 on August 2, 2009 at 2:32 PM
Maybe if you asked your question with some civility and really wanted an intelligent conversation, someone would answer. In the mean time it is self evident on Medicare that if you were well versed on the subject you would know the answers yourself. EODwU
Wade on August 2, 2009 at 2:34 PM
It was good, but I was about to jump through the TV screen at the lady from the Atlanta Journal talking about the greatness of Medicare as a government controlled health care policy.
THAT’S THE PROBLEM! The whole reason we need REFORM is Medicare is making us bankrupt. It’s not the insurance companies. Medicare is ‘great’ because it costs too much.
Medicare pays 30% less to doctors and hospitals than private insurance does. Medicare is funded by BOTH taxes from working people AND contributions from Medicare recipients for part B (100/mo) generally taken from their social security check each month before they know it is missing.
With a 30% advantage in paying claims, and tax money funding, and SS grifts funding Medicare. . . we are STILL going bankrupt for Medicare by 2017.
THIS is the reason we need ‘health care reform’. The private insurance company profits aren’t as important as the inept ability of Medicare to be solvent. 60B in fraud each year would put an insurance company out of business. I’d be willing to bet that insurance company profits are not more than 60B dollars a year. . . which is what Medicare WASTES every year.
Is Medicare a good program run by the government? Yes it is. But it is EXPENSIVE. Individuals under 40 years old will pay into it for their entire lives and get NOTHING. They are already means testing it (something they said they’d never do). . . and this is what they say we should do with the rest of the insurance market.

I’d like to see Social Security and MediCare combined and restructured as a way to care for our elderly when they have no one else to care for them. Families should take care of families, but when an elderly man or woman has no family I think we should take care of their basic needs.
No on the privatizing military care. You need doctors, nurses and medical techs as part of the team.

That is compassion I refuse to buy into because I want to be honest and not deceitful.
William Amos on August 2, 2009 at 2:40 PM
Medicare will be BROKE by 2017. Whether or not you think the government should ‘get rid of it’, it will be GONE before people under 40 get to get the coverage because it is insolvent.
Medicare benefits are too expensive for our government to provide. If they extend the Medicare system to the rest of the health care system in a single payor mode, hospitals will go bankrupt.
Everyone will have Medicare but no doctor to see when they get sick. Thanks congress.

So whats the fix then? get rid of medicaid and privatize it? Tell me how medicaid should be fixed.
liberal343 on August 2, 2009 at 2:47 PM
No, it is not practical to put that genie back in the bottle (Medicare + military health care).
Dreadful as it is to admit, the unfunded mandate of Medicare is already going to be a colossal hit to the economy for many years into the foreseeable future
Anyone with any brains or experience with these two government-run systems knows that they are rife with waste, inefficiency, fraud, political gamesmanship and substandard care.
There are many efficiently managed, competitive health-care packages out there now that one honestly cannot say these things about. Such health-care products are accessible to average Americans yet are far superior to Medicare & the military system. No sane person using such plans should want this socialist boondoggle to permanently distort and ultimately destroy their health plans.
Anyone who likes the ability to choose their own medical-care path, to pay for care freely without government imposition, should not want the entirety of American health care to be “Medicare-ized.”

Michelle said, “But there was no racial profiling, that’s the point.”
And that tool Al Hunt just brushed it off with, “Well, we don’t know the facts.”
In other words, he would rather ignore the obvious truth in favor of continuing the “profiling” meme.
Geez, Al, do you believe that Crowley was just riding around and said to himself, I think a black guy must live there, so let me go see what he’s up to

Stephanopoulos needs to get a serious economics education and fast if he is going to host Geithner any more. Timmy made Georgie look like a complete sponge! Not brought up or even hinted at: failure to bail out CIT, lender to Main Street businesses; the coming meltdown in Commercial Real Estate Mortgages (look at any commercial road in your city or town – how far do you have to go to find ten empty store fronts with For Rent signs in them?); the failure of job creation (a job does last more then 35 hours!) in the small business sector due to cascading consumer slowdown.
Congratulations to MM, she fended off a lot of smirks and discriminatory behavior from these jerks of journalism (needs to be a new beer-drinking category – Real Jerks of Journalism) to hold her own and offer truly alternative views of the news from these pikers.
I’m serious, Georgie, get an economics lesson or fifty before you look like a dumba$$ again.

LOL! They act so smug but one guy wasn’t even aware that the 911 call had been released and that we now know there was no racial profiling involved in the incident. A few others thought that public support of health care “reform” somehow translates into a total socialist takeover and “transformation”. I could go on with the list of absurdities but I’d have to watch again and take notes itemizing the myriad ways smug is often synonymous with stupid.

Being from England but having grown up in the states, I know something about this first hand. Most of my relatives are good, hard-working people. A few, however, do not fall into that category.
I’ve always had this theory about why so many great musical artists/bands continue to come from such a small island. The reason is called “being on the dole”. It is possible in that system to “just live”. You can sleep in, have enough to eat, maybe a couple pints down at the pub, repeat cycle. In the states, most band members actually have a part-time job while they are trying to make it. In Britain, you can just hang out and jam to your hearts content.
There is an entitlement culture where a class of people have lost any sense of shame. In fact, they will actually complain about the benefits they receive. They will tell you it is just not worth getting a job because of taxes, etc. Oh well, party on, Garth!

This is because the birth certificate thing is a colossal red herring, allowing the MSM to depict conservatism in simplistic crayola colors for their easily led, unthinking audiences.
Serious conservatives should be more concerned about efficient and effective policy and governance and shouldn’t allow themselves to be distracted by this side issue that permits the MSM to present a facile misrepresentation of conservatives and their most important concerns.

Congratulations on having a typo-free post by the way. Apparently you’ve discovered that if type slowly your greasy, fat fingers won’t get in the way as much.

From the appearance in the link given the document appears real, more backstory is needed for an evaluation of it’s authenticity.

Serious conservatives should be more concerned about efficient and effective policy and governance and shouldn’t allow themselves to be distracted by this side issue that permits the MSM to present a facile misrepresentation of conservatives and their most important concerns.
What is more serious than our Constitution and adhering to its guides and principles.

I have a deep-seated objection to any “news” organization wishing to store THEIR date on MY computer. The clips provided are links to ABC News that use FLASH to display the videos, rather than youtupe or other similar site. Despite having set my privacy and security options to DENY allowing ABCNEWS to store data on my machine, the “prompt” continues.
There is a privacy issue here. There is a control issue as well. WHO controls your computer? You? ABC News? And what data do they intend to store anyway? Sure, I can click “allow” to let them store whatever-it-is they wish to on MY harddrive. But that defeats the purpose of ME retaining control over MY computer.
Look, the MSM news media are the natural enemy of those of us on the right. So where do they get off using my equipmet that I paid for, to serve their purposes, rent free, whatever those purposes are? And why should we trust them?
So, are these videos of Michelle available on youtube or other less privacy-threatening video sites?
