Wonderful: House “compromise” reinserts abortion option into ObamaCare

posted at 4:54 pm on July 31, 2009 by Allahpundit

You’re better off reading the Standard’s rundown of what happened than listening to me blather about it, but here’s the nutshell version. Last night, led by pro-life Dem Bart Stupak, Waxman’s committee passed an amendment barring any mandate in ObamaCare for private insurers to pay for abortions. One curious hitch: Waxman voted for it. Why? Because, only if you vote yes do you get to ask for a “reconsideration” of the amendment later, which Waxman promptly did after he “convinced” (i.e. likely bought off) Blue Dog Bart Gordon to switch his vote. The result: A new “compromise” amendment introduced by pro-choicer Lois Capps passed, 30-28. Some compromise:

Although the amendment’s language appears to do away with the abortion mandate, Capitol Hill pro-lifers note that it explicitly permits the Secretary to include abortion in the services offered by the public plan. Indeed, if the Hyde amendment is reversed, the amendment would actually require that the public plan cover abortions.

With regard to the massive subsidies authorized under the act, referred to as “affordability credits,” the Capps amendment specifically requires taxpayer subsidies to flow to plans that include abortion, but creates an accounting scheme designed to give the impression that public funds will not subsidize abortion itself.

Other provisions in the Capps amendment appear to prevent state laws from being overturned and prohibit the Secretary from mandating that all plans include abortion. But the Capps amendment also requires that an abortion-covering plan be made available in every region.

Republicans and pro-life Democrats strongly criticized the amendment.

“We don’t compromise on the use of taxpayer funds for the destruction of human life,” objected Representative Phil Gingrey (R-GA).

Read the PDF of the amendment for yourself here. The bogus accounting scheme, which would theoretically “segregate” federal funds being directed to private plans from being used for abortions, starts on page 4, line 4. The trigger that would automatically include taxpayer-funded abortions in the public plan if the Hyde amendment is repealed — and who knows if the left will ever have the votes for that if they don’t have them now — starts on page 2, line 22. As noted by the Standard, Stupak claimed to have 39 congressmen ready to vote with the GOP if the bill included some sort of abortion-funding mechanism. Is the “compromise” a dealbreaker or will the Blue Dogs cave? My guess: The latter, of course.

This should show everyone how important abortion is to democrats/progressives. They will sacrifice almost everything for abortion.

Progressivism … utter control of your life, including death. That is the goal.

This proposed legislation is already Frankenstein’s monster:

adding mandatory abortion funding in every region is like dressing Frank up in a clown outfit: The final Insult to God and man and common sense

and like the monster, it’s already dead…..

Janos Hunyadi on July 31, 2009 at 5:16 PM

This might actually end up working to the Dems advantage. The abortion clause will never make it through Congress, but the GOP might very well spend all of August focusing on the anti-life aspects of ObamaCare anyway. Then when the clause is scrapped, they will have missed the chance to use August to educate the public about the remainder of the bill.

The only two things in life that are inexorably inevitable and absolutely permanent… Death and Taxes, and your current U.S. government intends to speed up those processes exponentially.

No matter how this whole pile of stink government run socialized healthcare plan was to go in order to get it passed, government funded and sanctioned murder of unborn children would have been, and will be, inserted at the first opportunity after implementation of the plan anyway.

LETTER FROM THE BOSS:

As the CEO of this organization, I have resigned myself to the
fact that Barack Obama is our President and that our
taxes and government fees will increase in a BIG way. To compensate for
these increases, our prices would have to increase by about 10%.. But since we cannot
increase our prices right now due to the dismal state of the economy, we will have to lay
off sixty of our employees instead.

This has really been bothering me, since I believe we are family here and I didn’t know
how to choose who would have to go.

So, this is what I did. I walked through our parking lots and found sixty ‘Obama’ bumper stickers on our employees’ cars
and have decided these folks will be the ones to let go. I can’t think of a more fair way to approach this problem.

They voted for change, I gave it to them.

This moonbat administration and the democrats in charge have just wakened a sleeping giant. The reverberations of this , after it gets out, will put rebublicans back in charge, or hopefully will kill this abortion of a bill altogether. I just mobilized my wife, and let me tell you, you dont want to mess with her on this issue. She will call every person she knows (and she is popular) and let them know about this crap.

Only if we could have outlawed sex with rodents, or maybe if waxman’s mother had decided to abort that thing that gives kids nightmares whenever it appears on tv.

I’m pro-choice, but think Roe v. Wade should be repealed(state’s rights thing for me) and I don’t think people who are opposed to it should pay for it. I’m pro-choice for my own reasons, but I can see points made by the Pro-life side. Pro-life people shouldn’t have to pay for it. That’s my two cents anyway…….

adamsmith on July 31, 2009 at 6:16 PM

Obamacare should just be called “cash for clunkers”. So, really, all these idiots have to do is just keep passing bills called “cash for clunkers”
“Clunker” is now the terminology for anything deemed worthless by democrats that you are too stupid to get rid of yourself.

Wethal on July 31, 2009 at 6:31 PM

Not at all OT.

Having financed a number of campaigns, there’s something called the Rule of 50.

Goes like this: Doesn’t matter how many people show up in favor of the candidate. What he will see is at least 50 people voting against him for every single person who bothers to show up opposed to him. Thus, for every 100 protesters, he sees 5,000 votes against him.

May not be scientific, but that’s how they think.

This is something community organizers know so well, and we better learn from them.

No Allah, the Blue Dogs will not cave on this.

Many of them only got elected in the first place because they managed to convince their southern constituents they were conservative Democrats. A vote for federal funding of abortion would demonstrate they were not who they claimed to be and they would be hard pressed to defend their seats if challenged on a pro-abortion vote.
