I think Crowley acted inappropriately. The clearest sign of that is that he asked for the department to keep sending cars to Gates’ home. How many cops does he need there to bring an old man into compliance? Two maybe?

Assuming all they need to bring into compliance is that old man, yes.

But remember that he was responding to a call about two people making suspicious entry to the house, based on a witness who didn’t see them well enough to answer “Black/White/Hispanic…?” for both persons of interest. He still didn’t know for sure whether Gates was one of those people (leaving one other suspicious person unaccounted) or not (leaving two, who may not have been friendly to either Gates or Crowley). Furthermore, in his agitated state, Gates seemed likely to make enough noise to attract some “backup” of his own.

Cops are trained to recognize when a situation is can get out of control, and have enough backup to be sure it doesn’t. It’s very easy, with your 20/20 hindsight, to say that Crowley didn’t need any help, but when he called for it, the situation was “fluid”, to say the least.

I think Hot Air should have a countdown clock to 5:00 every day to remind us of America’s cocktail hour.
