Video: Gibbs rips media for moronic coverage of moronic White House publicity stunt

posted at 5:30 pm on July 31, 2009 by Allahpundit

Imagine how dumb the coverage had to be to warrant complaints from the organizers of an event that was designed to draw coverage. And yet — it was that dumb, wasn’t it? We’ve actually reached the point of Obama worship where The One’s mouthpiece has to warn the media to be a bit less fawning about his photo ops.

If nothing else good came of this, at least Gates’s daughter got a chance to meet Crowley’s daughter and then comment snottily about her overuse of eyeliner in an op-ed — a bit of jackassery that made even the lefties at TNR blanch. More healing, please.

He’s not complaining about the moronic coverage per se…

He’s complaining that the media didn’t cover it “right” and follow Obama’s talking points (which the Obama Administration has paid GOOD money to the media to do, darn it!)

Mascara-gate will be soothed by Gates’ daugher, Crowley’s daughter having a sit down with the First Lady. She will show them how to ear Make-up like a woman should.

Gates’ daughter:

At that moment, right there in the library, they were just like us: a young family groomed to perfection

Perfection, no less. How lucky she is, the Perfect Miss Gates. Thank heaven she gave Miss Crowley something to strive for.

They just can’t help themselves. I’ll bet that went over well with the Cambridge cops. She was trying so hard to sneak that in amongst the flowery compliments and couldn’t quite pull it off. Maybe she can enlist Andrew Sullivan or David Letterman to help her out next time.

This is my favorite quote from Gates’ daughter:

As we walked by a set of French doors that gave a clear view of this highly anticipated talk, I saw Mr. Obama’s lean body coolly draped over a lawn chair

Give me a break!
Incidentally, what I heard was that Obama went out first leaving his lame friend behind. Crowley helped Gates down the stairs to the garden.

Somebody who can photoshop needs to do a picture of the white house press corp. They should use the bodies of different types of dogs in a “receiving a doggie treat posture,” except the faces of the press corp are used instead.

Gibbs says to the WHPC –Sit press corp, speak, gooood now how about a rawhide treat to slobber & chew on?

Gibbs pats all the good doggies on the head like a good master should.

Obama thought balloon: OK, I’m done with those two jerkweeds. Everyone loves me? Good. Now, back to making man in my image.

rihar on July 31, 2009 at 6:22 PM

The worst part of the piece in the Daily Beast is that Gates’ daughter continued to frame the issue as a matter of race and accused Crowley of fudging the police report.

“my father is not the first nor will he be the last black man to be arrested for no reason—in his own home or elsewhere—and Sergeant Crowley isn’t the first officer to fudge a police report.”

I think Crowley acted inappropriately. The clearest sign of that is that he asked for the department to keep sending cars to Gates’ home. How many cops does he need there to bring an old man into compliance? Two maybe? The arrest was likely over the line but after a big misunderstanding and a lot of verbal abuse I imagine a lot of cops will lose their cool and be provoked into arresting someone without good cause regardless or race.

Oh, and this quote from her father:

“You know, Crowley’s not a bad guy. He’s not a Joe the Plumber who wants to represent the Right. He would be horrified to be considered a racist.””

Because the right is nothing but a bunch of racists and certainly he had good reason to imply that Joe the Plumber is one. Surely you shouldn’t be labeled a racist just because you’re a homophobe.

Christien on July 31, 2009 at 6:29 PM

I kept telling people who thought this was all just a big orchestrated distraction they were dead wrong. That it was a series if revealing moments during which the American people would see the real Obama and that those moments would help to destroy him and hence his destructive agenda. While I wouldn’t exactly say mission accomplished I would say the ships has been struck broadside and is listing.

Crowley, the only one to even speak with the press was once again the epitome of class and professionalism. And this, this is going to leave a permanent mark:

Obama Strides ahead while Crowley helps Gates down the WH stairs. http://bit.ly/FIy7L http://bit.ly/UyopA

I love how this administration is squirming, wishing this whole episode would just go away. What they don’t realize is that if Obama had just apologized for his stupid remark, it probably would have been over and done with a long time ago. But he couldn’t bring himself to do that, and had to dig himself deeper in a hole with this stupid “beer summit”. Frigging amateurs.

jgapinoy on August 1, 2009 at 7:33 AM

I think Crowley acted inappropriately. The clearest sign of that is that he asked for the department to keep sending cars to Gates’ home. How many cops does he need there to bring an old man into compliance? Two maybe?

Assuming all they need to bring into compliance is that old man, yes.

But remember that he was responding to a call about two people making suspicious entry to the house, based on a witness who didn’t see them well enough to answer “Black/White/Hispanic…?” for both persons of interest. He still didn’t know for sure whether Gates was one of those people (leaving one other suspicious person unaccounted) or not (leaving two, who may not have been friendly to either Gates or Crowley). Furthermore, in his agitated state, Gates seemed likely to make enough noise to attract some “backup” of his own.

Cops are trained to recognize when a situation is can get out of control, and have enough backup to be sure it doesn’t. It’s very easy, with your 20/20 hindsight, to say that Crowley didn’t need any help, but when he called for it, the situation was “fluid”, to say the least.
