Pelosi goes nuts: Villainous, immoral insurance companies are the problem
posted at 2:15 pm on July 30, 2009 by Allahpundit
Good stuff. Take one of the most unpopular politicians in America, have her go off half-cocked in a crude attempt to satisfy Democratic demands for a villain to demagogue in selling ObamaCare, then wait for the backlash. Bonus points for using the same Orwellian rhetorical device Paul Ryan called Katrina Vanden Heuvel on last night, namely, exploiting the language of competition to push one of the most anti-competitive domestic measures in American history.
For sheer comic alarmism, this is topped only by The One’s warning at last week’s presser that greedy doctors are after your tonsils. But remember, you’re the ones who are fearmongering.
“They are the villains in this,” Pelosi said of private insurers. “They have been part of the problem in a major way. They are doing everything in their power to stop a public option from happening. And the public has to know that. They can disguise their arguments any way they want, but the fact is that they don’t want the competition.”…
“It’s almost immoral what they are doing,” added Pelosi, who stood outside her office long after her press conference ended to continue speaking to reporters, even as aides tried in vain to usher her inside. “Of course they’ve been immoral all along in how they have treated the people that they insure with pre-existing conditions, you know, the litany of it all.”
Translation: Private insurers are selfishly defending themselves from a statist boondoggle that’ll likely drive them out of business and create a government monopoly. I can’t believe it’s come to this, but Yale Law prof Stephen Carter was so distressed by Democratic attacks on nefarious profit-seekers that he felt obliged to write an op-ed this morning reminding America that profits are actually a good thing:
High profits are excellent news. When corporate earnings reach record levels, we should be celebrating. The only way a firm can make money is to sell people what they want at a price they are willing to pay. If a firm makes lots of money, lots of people are getting what they want.
To the country, profit is a benefit. Record profit means record taxes paid. But put that aside. When profits are high, firms are able to reinvest, expand and hire. And profits accrue to the benefit of those who own stocks: overwhelmingly, pension funds and mutual funds. In other words, high corporate profits today signal better retirements tomorrow.
Another reason to celebrate profit is the incentive it creates. When profits can be made, entrepreneurs provide more of needed goods and services…
We want health care to be cheaper, and the for-profit health-care industry has every incentive to make it so. Supporters of the public option tout Medicare’s cost advantages over private insurance, but those are largely obtained by setting below-market reimbursement rates for medical services (meaning that private patients subsidize Medicare patients). Moreover, the costs of compliance with the hundreds of pages of Medicare regulations are also transferred to the providers, and thus, again, to private patients.
Below for your amusement, via Greg Hengler, a meeting of the minds on what must be done to rescue America from the immoral villains who are bleeding us dry by providing needed coverage. Provocative exit question via James Pethokoukis: Is ObamaCare turning into … RomneyCare?

Notice the Dems never mention lawyers as villains. Nver a word about tort reform. That’s immoral.

15% percent of American’s have no coverage, that’s what 40-45 million folks?
10%-15% of those are illegal’s and I can’t remember what the number was that actually can afford healthcare, but choose not to get it.
Heard those numbers somewhere, don’t have time to find the link, but it puts things in perspective.

every rate that is issued by an insurance company is reviewed and approved by every state’s department of insurance every year.
Insurance companies are not allowed to offer insurance that does not have its rates and benefits approved by EACH STATE’s department of insurance. . . every year.

Absolutely disgraceful behavior by the Speaker of the House. I remembered when Newt Gingrich got hammered by the Democrats and the media for some of his more extreme comments – and he deserved it. There is something to be said for upholding the dignity of the office, no matter what your personal views are. Pelosi is a classless witch.
Not to mention it being pretty poor politics to paint the industry that is funding health care for 85% of Americans as villains.
Worst. Speaker. EVER.

Statists do not believe in the American dream or capitalism or anything that has made this country great. As the “First Crony” (love that moniker MM) said, she has not been proud of her country – until of course, O got nominated.
A majority of Americans are happy with our health care (as a great protest sign said, “…Where would Canadians Go?”). So, why screw with it? Its not about helping people, it is all about Power and Control. The twin sisters that guide Statists’ everywhere. Period.

I’m reading “Atlas Shrugged” for the first time, about halfway through. I am continually amazed at how much Pelosi and her hordes sound like the statist villains in that book. Rand was a prophet. Hopefully the looters will never gain the level of control that they had in Rand’s novel. I have no doubt that Nan has her own Directive 10-289 in mind, but she wants to do it piecemeal, rather than in one big bite.

I sympathize for those without health insurance, but if you get sick and can’t pay your medical bills, you don’t die–you file for bankruptcy.
A friend had cancer and racked up around $1.3 million in bills. They had insurance, but it wouldn’t pay for the treatment (which saved her life). There’s no way she can ever pay the bill, so the hospital stopped bothering them about it.
Life goes on.

When I try to understand the liberal mindset, I think it’s the word “care” that gives them the idea that Healthcare should be a non-profit, government-run endeavor.
If only Doctors and Insurance Companies and Hospitals truly CARED about the sick people, then they would offer their services for free (or at least stop making profit).
Next will be Childcare. If nannies and Day Care Centers truly CARE about children…. you get the idea.

That crazy bioch just indebted our country to the tune of $5trillion since the Dems took Congress and she has the breathtaking gall to call insurance companies immoral? Obama and the rest of the lunatic Dems keep harping on “they inherited the debt” from Bush. Remember, only Congress can appropriate funds. The debt accumulation over the past three years is theirs…not Bush’s. Granted, he signed Bills that he should have vetoed, but let’s not forget that the Dems stuffed pork into war funding Bills.
Bush’s biggest mistake was Prescription Drugs. Other than that, the Dems own this economy and the runaway national debt.
orlandocajun on July 30, 2009 at 2:58 PM
I think the state was providing subsidies to those who couldn’t afford to purchase insurance on their own.
AZCoyote on July 30, 2009 at 2:58 PM
If health care is a “right” in this country, I think legal and accounting services should also be “rights”. After all, the federal tax code requires accounting services (turbo or otherwise) for most people, and if you try to open or run a small business, see if you don’t need occasional legal assistance (not to mention family matters such as trusts, deeds, divorce, etc).
But will Congress (mostly lawyers) and their support staffs (many accountants) ever pass laws to turn their industries into government monopolies??
Thought not.
Better off with the self-sufficient American model, after all.
Maybe a few more engineers, domestic and otherwise, are needed in Congress, along with a few entrepenuers.
fred5678 on July 30, 2009 at 2:58 PM
No love lost here for insurance companies. The only time I ever really needed my coverage was when I had a serious accident in ’07. I was on the phone with them every single day for over six months to get the coverage I had been paying for years for. Those rat bastards actually tried to not pay a dime on a $60,000 hospital bill. I pay them for years and the day I actually need my coverage they bail. Thats how they make money. They fight you tooth and nail over every dollar.

I keep seeing this “pre-existing conditions” thing popping up. Most of the times it is a “baaad” thing. I have yet to see it as a good thing. Now Note – HIPPA eliminates pre-existing conditions when changing insurance companies after employment. So, if you come up with a broken leg on your last day of your employer provided insurance, the insurance at you next employer must cover it.
What burns my butt are those that do not carry isurance (therefore do not contribute to the payment pool), then they are diagnosed with terminal creeping crudies and run to an insurance company to get someone else to pay for the treatment. That is unfair to all the other insured. They made a choice let them live (die) with it; and no insurance company will pay for that pre-existing condition.

Sigh – wrong and wrongger. O’Reilly is CLOSER to reality, but he misses a few points.
1) Even if we took all of everyone’s property, we couldn’t afford socialism. The problem isn’t the SIZE or our nation (otherwise Cuba would be a prosperous paradise). The problem with socialism is that people don’t work for fun. If you’re giving them health care, or food, or a house, etc. Then they won’t work to provide it for themselves. Socialism lowers overall output. Ask Hawaii – people took advantage of the free healthcare offer for their kids, and swamped the program in 6 months.
2)There’s absolutely nothing wrong with companies making profits from people’s pain. Profits allow innovation, encourage better results, pay the hiring of more and better workers, and spur competition. Put another way – which doctor will treat you better – the one who wants your recommendation, so he can buy a bigger car, or the one who gets paid the same no matter what he does?

Three days ago my insurance coughed up $8,700 for my roof. I coughed up $1500. My wife was hit by an uninsured driver.
Insurance coughed up $4,000 to put her car back together, I coughed up $300. My wife’s medication cost $185 for 30 pills, then my employer got me a better plan. With my insurance it costs $35 for 30 pills.
You get what you pay for. I suggest you shop around for a different insurer.

The way they see is charge for coverage, then when the day comes to pay up, pay as little as possible. I mean it took me writing a letter threatening to go to the state for any action to be taken on their part. I had no prior health problems and no pre-existing conditions. It was a freak accident. This is how they operate. I wonder how many people just give up before I did and only receive a fraction of what they deserve.
