How to create a zillion jobs
posted at 9:26 am on July 30, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
As time goes on, we find more on how the administration can claim that they have saved or created so many jobs. No one has specified anything about the length of those jobs. The Associated Press checked on figures used by Democrats in Oregon and found they took credit for creating over 3,000 jobs with Porkulus funds — jobs that lasted shorter than a typical Barack Obama expiration date:
How much are politicians straining to convince people that the government is stimulating the economy? In Oregon, where lawmakers are spending $176 million to supplement the federal stimulus, Democrats are taking credit for a remarkable feat: creating 3,236 new jobs in the program’s first three months.
But those jobs lasted on average only 35 hours, or about one work week. After that, those workers were effectively back unemployed, according to an Associated Press analysis of state spending and hiring data. By the state’s accounting, a job is a job, whether it lasts three hours, three days, three months, or a lifetime.
The state takes offense to the notion that they’re being dishonest in reporting these numbers:
“This stimulus plan was intentionally designed for short-term projects to pump needed jobs and income into families, businesses and communities struggling to get by,” Hunt said in a statement. “No one ever said these would be full-time jobs for months at a time.”
Which is exactly why Porkulus was a bad idea. If that same capital had gone into the private sector instead of getting confiscated by the Obama administration for this generation’s WPA, the investment would have allowed businesses to expand and new businesses to start. That would have created actual jobs that last longer than a few months, or in Oregon’s case, a few hours.
When the issue of stimulus arose in January and February, critics made exactly this argument, now corroborated by this Oregon bureaucrat. Instead of agreeing with that criticism, Democrats insisted that it was completely incorrect. They sold Porkulus as the vista to a future economy that would create better jobs for more Americans. Instead, they bolstered the day-worker industry and tried to pass it off as a real corrective to massive unemployment that continues to expand.
At this rate, how will Porkulus actually reduce unemployment in Oregon with the $176 million in Porkulus grants?
If Oregon’s dollars-to-jobs ratio remains steady, the program will create about 688 full-time, yearlong jobs. So far, it’s generated only enough hours to employ 54 people full-time for a year.
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? At least it’s cheaper per job than New Hampshire.

“You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it,” -Adrian Rogers, 1931.

The truth is the incompetence of the Federal government obviously does not know how the business environment works. Job creatiion is related to entrepreneurship and that is where the taxes are directed. Inhibit the source reduce the production in jobs. Newgative impetus = negative results. Lies and deceptions will NOT work.

With all the expiration dates falling fast and furious, and more and more bad news comes from Barack Obama’s Very Large Stimulating Package, I think we can expect to see polling numbers continue to fall out of Hopenchange’s favor, and soon, I think, the press will begin to actually press on some of these issues. They’ll never go after Obam’ter with the nastiness they did when they went after Bush, but these days, I’ll take what we can get.

Does Oregon have a one week waiting period for unemployment benefits?
These type of temp jobs actually cost workers money because you have to go a full week unemployed before you can even apply for benefits. If you get a temp job every two weeks, you’ll never qualify. You’d make more money if you just stayed on the rolls until the benefits run out.

So – what happens when, during 1Q/2Q 2010 and the numbers look even worse than what they do now? How do the Dems run in 2010, after fully embracing all of his policies, when the RESULTS of those policies are as bad as they appear to be? I’m telling you, if UE is b/w 10-12% (and esp, if inflation starts to creep up) next year, the Dems are going to take a bath – as in, anyone that voted for all of this nonsense could lose their seat. Anyone else have the feeling that Oregon’s woes are fallout from the environmentalists’ constant attacks on the state’s forestry industry over the past 20+ years?
I looked at the state’s statistics and it shows that logging jobs dropped by nearly 20,000 over the past 20 years, mainly due to “timber supply decreases”, with the biggest drops coming in the first few years of the 90s.
That seems like legalese for “The environmentalists blocked our access to many forests through widespread lawsuits” to me.

Here’s how you create jobs these days. First, you implode the economy and put everybody out of work. Then you offer them jobs in any number of new or existing Corps programs, and turn those efforts inwards against the rest of us still working and making a living. The more people need work, the more the government offers them “jobs”. It’s all govt. created jobs, but hey, who’s nit picking…..or paying attention anyways…

Exactly! I live in one of the largest, but least populated, counties in Michigan. The county has only two basic employers.
One of those was idled for three months during the early part of the recession. It is back up and running for now, but is problematic as future orders remain unclear.
The other business is closing down permanently this fall for lack of future feed.
Everybody living here is either related to, or knows several, people who are unemployed, or soon to be unemployed. There is no chance of future jobs since the Federal government (the largest land owner in the county), in support of the greenies, has been blocking present and future resource-based business.
Our Senators and Representatives reside far from this county. Not one single stimulus dollar has shown up in this county to date.
This county voted for Obama. The chickens are coming home to roost, and they can’t be hidden.

I don’t think he anticipated his political capital would be spent almost entirely on one bill. I think he and the rest of the Dems figured the economy would turn itself around(which they’d claim credit for, of course), and that would give them a greenlight to pass anything they wanted.
So even if it was unintentional, Biden was being completely honest when he said they misread the economy. And now they’re screwed because until the unemployment rate goes down and the deficit is dramatically reduced, Congressional Dems will be hesitant to vote for anything on Obama’s agenda.

I’ve thought for some time that Obama’s populatiry peaked immediately post-election/inauguration and that it’ll be downhill from here on out. The simple truth is that his policies ARE anti-business; which means fewer capital expenditures and new ventures. Basically, he’s tamping down the entrepreneurial environment and spirit and drives our economy at the grassroots level. And let’s face it – what makes America great is our freedom and our wealth (or at least our ability to pursue wealth). Obama’s attacking on both fronts and eventually it will bite him because poor economic numbers will be tolerated in the ST, but after awhile people begin to see that the policies are more of a cause than a fix for their woes. Obama’s policies just need to “simmer” awhile longer.
