Encore: Master thespian reads Palin’s Twitter free verse
posted at 5:15 pm on July 30, 2009 by Allahpundit
Back by popular demand. These bits are actually less a testament to her goofiness than to the ability of Shatner’s sublime hamminess to make anything funny. Set it to bass and bongos and add a few patented melodramatic pauses and even “I … have a dream” would be comedy gold. And yet, light-hearted though they may be, I think these late-night hit-and-runs are more damaging to her than all the dreary hit pieces from left-wing politicos. Bit by bit, they’ve Quaylized her to the point where it’s hard to imagine what she could do to erase the impression that she’s a joke. Conservative pundits keep telling her to bone up on policy and show that she knows her stuff, but that only solves half the problem; to keep the doofus meme at bay, she’d have to be flawless going forward. Any bad answer or “I don’t know” or awkward phrasing along the way would be an occasion to resuscitate it. It’s basically an impossible task. Just ask The One, who’s hours away from beer diplomacy to undo the damage from his nationally televised, fantastically stupid Gatesgate answer.

Eeeesh. A candidate like that is just asking to be skewered on SNL and Conan O’Brien. Good luck.

Regarding Mittens and evangelicals:
The word evangelical no longer describes a Moral Majority conservative Republican voter. Self-described evangelicals now include Obama voters who consider social/economic justice as important as or even more important than abortion.
If we are talking about old-fashioned evangelicals, they still trend conservative Republican and believe that Mormonism is a dangerous cult. One of the most influential churches in the old-fashioned evangelical movement is located in my home base of Orange County — the original Calvary Chapel founded by Pastor Chuck Smith, who has seeded and inspired hundreds of like-minded churches worldwide. My local Calvary Chapel spent much of the 2007-2008 presidential campaign railing against Mormons on their radio station K-WAVE, which broadcasts to most of southern California.
Yet on May 9th this same Calvary Chapel hosted a conference, The Challenge for Change, featuring avowed Mormon Glenn Beck, as well as John Ziegler, Phyllis Schlafly, Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Gary Bauer, et al.
This suggests to me that some old-fashioned evangelicals might have a different reaction to Mormons with authentic conservative values than to Mormons whose conservative authenticity is suspect — Mittens, for example.
Then there is Dr. John MacArthur, an old-fashioned evangelical who argues compellingly that government is not our moral authority and Christians should focus on soul-saving instead of politics.

No. I don’t know what position she is going to play, but I want Sarah Palin in this fight. She has a lot to offer.

Nah, she’s damaged goods. It’s time to move on to a real leader, someone that people like Mike Murphy can support and who will not ever be satirized.

terryonline:
If you got your Palin news from other places besides The View and Oprah, you might get a better picture of her abilities. You complained of her attack on the media in her speech, which consisted of 2 or 3 lines. Obviously you did not listen to her speech at all, did you?
If you didn’t, and you do not get the full picture, your opinion on Palin’s abilities is not based on anything of substance.
atheling on July 30, 2009 at 9:00 PM
You guys are not getting point! Yes Romney, Huckabee, and Jindal can all be attacked. But some attacks are more serious than others. I actually don’t think Huckabee and Jindal are not viable candidates so I’ll stick with Romney for examples now. The attacks on Romney don’t disqualify him. Because some bigots don’t like Mormons doesn’t make him less viable. If people don’t think you are ready (like Palin) that makes you not viable as a serious candidate. Get the difference? To recap: A bigoted attack about your religion doesn’t make one less viable. An attack about you not being ready is a death blow to a candidacy.

I think that she will now address the ridicule herself. What she did was a game changer in the arena of politics. As a private citizen those remarks will be fewer if not completely eliminated.
Elected offical vs private citizen, is the standard for libel/slander different?
Now that she has stepped down, she is once more Sarah Palin , Private Citizen.
It is a possibility that as Sarah Palin, private Citizen She can sue the people who slander her and her husband and children.
Perhaps results from lawsuits will pay her legal bills from the false accusations she has endured.
Perhaps the people who have been so cruel on this venue will cease and desist with the abuse that was heaped on her yesterday.
She has opened the door to those who claim to be more intelligent than she to take over the business of caring for this country, of making a contribution, of risking emotional assaults from strangers to step up and do the job.
Now Private Citizen Palin can sue the likes of the person who made the remark of sexual content, the remark questioning incest, perhaps the unauthorized use of photos.
Americannodash on July 30, 2009 at 9:06 PM
I did watch/listen to her speech. She was great.
That doesn’t mean I want her for the 2012 candidate. I’d prefer someone besides Palin, Huck, Romney….

Then why do you compulsively attempt to belittle and silence those who express any doubt or criticism of Sarah Palin?
Loxodonta on July 30, 2009 at 9:09 PM
So she is going for the trial lawyer lobby. Campaign claims will be “successfully sued meanies for money — ready to take on Iran in the world court”
Bradky on July 30, 2009 at 9:10 PM
Not only that, but did you see how he did not say a word to terryonline when she complained of Palin hitting the media back, yet he stated that Palin should do all her own defending?
He is only here to attack the Palin supporters, and has demonstrated a lack of ethics or consistency when it comes to principles or his own opinions.
atheling on July 30, 2009 at 9:11 PM
Why do you and others compulsively attempt to belittle Palin and her supporters because they do not agree with your assessment of Palin?
Blake on July 30, 2009 at 9:12 PM
you mean kind of like promising to represent the citizens of a state and taking money from supporters, then quitting because its too darn complicated. Hmmm sounds like lack of consistency and principles.
Bradky on July 30, 2009 at 9:12 PM
Yes, she’s damaged. Who isn’t? Sarah Palin is going to be satirized unless she completely disappears from public life. She can improve her speaking skills, read policy books and increase her depth on issues, and use humor to deflect her critics. And, while she’s doing that, she can help get some conservatives elected to Congress in 2010.
Loxodonta on July 30, 2009 at 9:13 PM
Most people remember that practically until he died Ronald Reagan was touted as senile, stupid or both. The press worked hard at pointing out that he fell asleep during cabinet meetings and had to go to bed really early. As he got older, when he made speeches, there was a distinct sound that he made during pauses. I remember cringing every time, not because it bothered me or colored my vision of him but that it gave ammunition to his critics. To my knowledge, no one in the press ever mentioned it. So, what I am trying to say to the Palin faithful is this is the big leagues. It is terribly hurtful to see someone you admire get torn down because of speech patterns and verbal shorthand used on Twitter. It says more about the Left then it does Gov. Palin but an attack this concentrated and unrelenting is something you are going to have to get use to.
Cindy Munford on July 30, 2009 at 9:15 PM
That’s not how it works here…I can comment to whomever I please…ignore me if you wish…yeah.
So sorry I troubled you…
ladyingray on July 30, 2009 at 9:15 PM
Atheling,
Please take it down a notch or two. Okay? Some of these people are the best we have here at HA. Palin like Reagan would persuade them into the fold through solid conservative principled reasoning. Reagan focused on the issues not the individual person or group. Stay the course of this principle and you will indeed win them over at the end of the day.
Americannodash on July 30, 2009 at 9:16 PM
He patently ignores the fact that we only attack Palin detractors when their criticism is not based on FACT OR OBSERVATION. This is the crux of the matter. These people seem unable to accept any criticism, even if it is leveled validly at ignorance or double standards! terryonline is a case in point. She parrots the MSM criticism of Palin’s farewell speech, yet demonstrates a total ignorance of the content of said speech. She deserves the criticism, yet people like Loxodonta defends her because any critic of Palin is a friend to them, whether the criticism is valid or not.
atheling on July 30, 2009 at 9:18 PM
Why do you and others compulsively attempt to belittle those who do not agree with your “Messiah” assessment of Palin?
ladyingray on July 30, 2009 at 9:18 PM
The difference is for years Reagan talked about policy. The only issue Palin can talk about at length is energy. You can’t run solely on energy policy.

atheling on July 30, 2009 at 9:23 PM
Thanks. I agree with all you said but this:
As long is Sarah Palin is in the public eye, the ridicule will continue. She’s been cartooned. She needs to find a means to deal with it in her own way that will deflect the attacks. The more she does that, and the better she does it, the less the ridicule will be laughed with and the more the ridicule will be scorned and dismissed.

atheling on July 30, 2009 at 9:30 PM
What? Sarah Palin is “Quaylized” because she was seen as unready? How does that work? If her only problem was that she wasn’t ready, then she can always spend the time between elections getting ready. That’s not what the thread was about. What Allahpundit meant by “Quaylized” was “irreparably damaged,” as in “she’s never going to be taken seriously no matter what she does.”
And if you don’t think that the other candidates can also be rendered similarly “irreparably damaged,” consider the other thread on how “ObamaCare” is apparently morphing into “RomneyCare v2.0.” Consider the possibility of Romney’s name getting attached, through no fault of his own or not, to this wildly unpopular monstrosity lurching through Congress. Suppose ObamaCare passes, proves to be the disaster everyone is saying it will be, and is held up as being pretty much the same thing as what Romney imposed on the sick, the halt, and the lame in Massachusetts.
In other words, a candidate can be “Quaylized” (rendered unelectable and politically inert) for reasons other than not being able to talk like a radio announcer. SNL might make fun of Romney for being an unemotional piece of cardboard with no hint of human warmth. I don’t get why you imagine that the other candidates aren’t vulnerable to this sort of thing, even if their vulnerabilities are not Sarah Palin’s vulnerabilities.
Aitch748 on July 30, 2009 at 9:30 PM
Oh, you are really blind. Sorry about that…
Blake on July 30, 2009 at 9:30 PM
The difference is that Pres. Reagan was at the end of his career and Gov. Palin is at the beginning. Terryann, you are young, what would you do if tomorrow someone told you that you were totally unsuitable to do what you have a passion for? Especially if that passion could help people. A lot of people here who have been tearing Gov. Palin apart have come to the defense of people currently in office who have made errors but for some reason this woman gets no wiggle room or learning curve on what amount to superficial complaints. She’s done nothing wrong but she must give up all pretension to furthering her political career. If that’s even what she wants to do. Tough crowd.
Cindy Munford on July 30, 2009 at 9:32 PM
Wishful thinking?

They all think that everyone is going to flock to and support their candidate and forget all the mud they’ve flung.
Blake on July 30, 2009 at 9:35 PM
I don’t do it compulsively. I very rarely post in Palin threads because of you, atheling and a few other supporters who are very divisive, compulsively attack anyone who expresses any doubt about her, and anyone who tries to stop you from bullying other posters into silence.
Tonight, I decided to intervene. I don’t like the way you treat other posters. I wish you would learn to advocate for Sarah Palin without bullying and insulting people, especially women.
I know many Palin supporters who advocate positively, and discuss differences civilly. More power to them and Sarah Palin. Less to you and yours.
Loxodonta on July 30, 2009 at 9:35 PM
Well perhaps you’re right she might be able to repair her image in the future. But in no way do I think she’s a viable candidate for 2012.

Loxodonta on July 30, 2009 at 9:40 PM
I agree with this. For some reason women in American politics get typecasted into a certain character and they can’t break out if it. Hillary Clinton = the cold and calculating woman. Sarah Palin = the ditz. It’s unfair.
terryannonline on July 30, 2009 at 9:40 PM
I can see that you’ve been paying attention to all of his blogs then. Part of me thinks that Allah likes to be mentioned in the threads, be it good, bad or indifferent. So as the Roman Emperors used to say “Let the games begin” — “Caesar we who are about to die, salute you!”

Your attempts at mirroring are very reminiscent to children’s games. Please grow up and learn how to handle criticism.
Loxodonta on July 30, 2009 at 9:44 PM
Wrong. He was not mirroring. He’s speaking the truth. No one here who supports Palin thinks she is a “Messiah”. She has her flaws, but her principles are sound. The person who made that accusation was engaged in calumny.
atheling on July 30, 2009 at 9:47 PM
Yes. The degrading criticism hurled at Sarah Palin is a combination of sexism, elite intellectual snobbery, ideological bias, regional bias, cultural bias, and candidate bias. It’s unfair, and it’s really bad. But that’s what she has to work through. Somehow.
Loxodonta on July 30, 2009 at 9:49 PM
I am not unaware of her foibles and realize there is room for improvement but if we all can’t say that about ourselves then we would be Barak Obama. If the time ever comes that the opportunity to vote for Gov. Palin presents itself and you still have misgivings, then you don’t vote for her. Look at this thread, look at the names you never see comment any where else but where there is a chance to bash Gov. Palin. It’s very interesting.

Cindy Munford on July 30, 2009 at 9:54 PM
All the Republicans running for the presidential nomination were ridiculed last year. The same is true of any prominent conservative Republican office holder or candidate.
The issue is not the unfairness of the ridicule, it’s how to respond to it. How Palin is responding now is not working well enough.

Loxodonta on July 30, 2009 at 9:57 PM
Then, according to all of you here, Obama has already won 2012. No need to have an opposition candidate. The elections will be just a… ahem… formality.
If no GOP candidate can surpass the MSM, then why have a Republican Party at all? Might as well close shop and make America a one-party state.
I think Sarah will do something different than anyone thinks. I don’t think she wants the Presidency, as tempting as it is to run for it. I don’t blame her if she just wants to disappear from the public eye and focus on other things… like her husband’s commercial fishing business, for example.
Imagine this. Years from now, she may appear with Todd in an episode or two of Deadliest Catch. And it will probably have the highest ratings. A lot of men will watch her in admiration. A lot of women will still hate her. And a few of the GOP will have to wonder if McCain should have bypassed her altogether, which perhaps, only perhaps, would have saved her from the nest of serpents in which she was thrown in 2008.
Trust me on this one. If the proverbial $#!% hits the fan in this country, neither she nor her family will starve. That’s something you cannot say of just about anyone who sought to destroy her.
For the moment, the best thing to do is to leave her alone.

No, they are just too long. She tries to pack to much into one opportunity. As she matures and has more opportunities to make her points she will be able to group subject areas more appropriately. To learn the art of holding onto a thought or retort and wait for the exact moment to use it to the greatest affect is not a skill you are born with. When and if she acquires the skill she will enjoy the total devastation of her opponents that it brings. Have you read Jim Treacher?

Some people have great difficulty relating to simple expressions from the heart. I don’t understand why.
So often in the Palin threads we have the heart vs. the brain conflicts. It’s difficult to live without both.

I would agree that we shouldn’t pick a candidate because the media seems more favorable. However, the media CAN do such damage to public figure’s image that it is hard to come back from. I guess only time will tell if this is the case with Palin.
I will also say that Palin is not helping herself very much either. If the MSM meme is that her speeches are not written very well…then should be working hard against that. My impression is that she doesn’t care and she just attacks the media for being “elitist.”

Good point. In any public life, for that matter. Didn’t Churchill say that in war one can die only once, but in politics you can die many deaths?

I’m sorry, but they have shown here – and elsewhere – to be a bunch of elitists. I would not buy a used car from any of them at the MSM.
