Barney Frank: Yes, a public plan will lead to a government takeover of health care
posted at 7:52 pm on July 30, 2009 by Allahpundit
I’m not overly worried. The GOP’s closing the gap on the generic ballot and seeing a surge in strong recruits for congressional challenges, which means the current Congress is probably as blue as it’ll be for awhile. If they don’t have the votes to make us choke on single-payer now, they likely never will. Even so, that’s what the liberal wing is planning, as our friend who helped ruin the subprime industry is candid enough to admit here. No wonder the House wants to backload the costs of ObamaCare. That’s obviously designed to give the left a chance to say “it’s working!” during the first five years while expenses are low and use the momentum to push for expansion.
And what if the final bill ends up dropping a public insurance option altogether? Don’t celebrate just yet:
If Obamacare is enacted without a new surtax, its immense costs will lead to tax increases soon enough. If it is enacted without a public plan, the federal government will nonetheless be paying a bigger and bigger share of a larger and larger number of people’s health-insurance bills. What we have here, in other words, are amendments that change the speed rather than the direction of the legislation.
And it is premature to celebrate even a modest victory. The public option may yet resurface in a new guise. Senate majority leader Harry Reid, in his usual bumbling way, has previewed the subterfuge: “We’re going to have some type of public option, call it ‘co-op,’ call it what you want.” Changing the name on the government-run option will not make it any less government-run. Conservative arguments have made great headway in making the Democrats defensive about a public plan. But removing a single objectionable feature from Obamacare does not make the overall package any less intrusive or ineffective. It’s still a pig, even if the Democrats have started taking out their lipstick.
The co-ops are just a trojan horse towards Frank’s end. Make sure everyone knows it.

The whole of government run healthcare is a fraud. Maybe we can recycle the federal government through the cash for clunkers program.
Maybe we should wish for a program as well run as cash for clunkers. They suspended the latest cluster you know what tonight because it was becoming an unwieldy bureaucratic nightmare.
Don’t worry, your government run healthcare will be fine.

I wonder if government run health care will turn out to be like this.
What a clusterfark government run health care will be. If they can’t get this program right just think doctors telling patients we can’t see you anymore because we ran out of money to fast. It’s going to take to long for the government to pay us so your SOL. I hope this fails.
Brat4life on July 30, 2009 at 9:05 PM
By now, I’m now soooo disgusted with the GOP. I expect them to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by passing a foot-in-the-door healthcare “compromise” bill.
Republicans: Cruising toward America’s destruction at 2/3 throttle.
ROCnPhilly on July 30, 2009 at 9:08 PM
They’ve been trying since Truman to do this. They’re never going to stop. Whatever else it does, and whether it was ever even intended to address its stated aims in health care, it fundamentally changes the relationship of the citizenry to their government. It’s the biggest boost clientelism and nanny-statism will ever get. They won’t rest until they have it.

ROCnPhilly on July 30, 2009 at 9:08 PM
The house cleaning in DC needs to include all politicians from both parties, based upon their voting records and accomplishments. Simple criteria such as:
1> What has this elected official done for the people of this country? What are the accomplishments?
2> Has he/she voted along the lines of what their constituents wanted?
3> Has he/she represented their party with their votes, or did they represent their constituents?
These three simple questions would likely rid us of 90% of the politicians currently serving their party and party donors, rather than serving the people.
Keemo on July 30, 2009 at 9:18 PM

Barney Frank’s mouth disgusts me. Not only in what he says, but thinking about where it’s been.
suzyk on July 30, 2009 at 9:55 PM
Does it really matter? With SS and medicare we’re $99 trillion in the hole, and Obama is doing his best (deliberately) to make it worse. I know, I know, all past presidents didn’t deal with SS and medicare… but you’ll recall Bush tried hard to take on SS but was shot down, and for a number of years the unprecedented growth the tax cuts brought were slicing the deficit.
Again, it’s not that Obama’s policies aren’t working. They’re working exactly as he intended. He wasn’t lying when he talked about redistributing wealth. He wasn’t lying when he said that he was going to “fundamentally transform” the country. He wasn’t lying when he said ACORN and friends would shape his administration. Except for possible roadblocks on Obamacare and Cap and Tax, everything is going exactly according to plan, so far.
Oh, and as for his tanking poll numbers? Don’t worry about that. That’s why he’s saved 90% of the “stimulus” money. He’s going to dump it out in time to create a phony recovery in time for reelection.
RightWinged on July 30, 2009 at 9:55 PM

The majority of Americans want single payer. The majority of doctors want single payer. This is more clear evidence that democracy is not functioning in the US. The corporations buy what they want from the government, which happily sells it to them, and sells the people out.
