New ad: ObamaCare’s not going to pay for abortions, is it?

posted at 7:25 pm on July 29, 2009 by Allahpundit

Nah, or at least not yet. At this point, cobbling together enough Democratic votes to pass a bill in both houses is like trying to build a six-foot Jenga tower; sticking something in there about abortion would be like tossing a cherry bomb at it. Better to pass the bill now, wait a year or two, and then … “expand coverage.” Even so, I’d love to see The One pressed on why he’s not putting up more of a stink to have a provision included. We all know the truth — he’s willing to sacrifice anything, including a public plan, to save face and get something on his desk — but his previous explanation was weak and there’s plenty of fun to be had in cornering him. If the goal of ObamaCare is to make sure everyone’s covered, and if, as Obama once famously said, he wouldn’t want to see his teenaged daughters “punished with a baby,” what’s the logic for refusing to put abortions on the taxpayer tab? The whole point of redistribution is that freedom is meaningless if you lack the wherewithal to avail yourself of your options. In which case, shouldn’t you and I be kicking in to make sure women can free themselves of Mommy’s Little Inconvenience?

Here’s the accompanying statement from Family Research Council president Tony Perkins. He’s worried about rationing, but I’m pretty sure that’s all part of the right’s “fearmongering” or whatever too.

Wow! That sucks. The premise. Not the ad.

Guardian on July 29, 2009 at 7:29 PM

But..but..factcheck.org said it doesn’t!!!

More commercials like this please.

Add some nursing home commercials where they put grandma on doorsteps with a suitcase.

Grandpa giving his pocket watch to his grandson prematurely because he got a rejection letter for his prostate surgery.

Uncle Joe getting a rejection letter for his liver cancer surgery, followed by a gunshot. The letter falls like a feather to the floor at his feet.

portlandon on July 29, 2009 at 7:30 PM

The ad is pretty effective. Not only does it point out the abortion aspect, but it plays out the scenario where the government has denied a senior much-needed surgery. Viewers witness the government letter telling a patient that rationing doesn’t allow for him to receive the care he needs.

amerpundit on July 29, 2009 at 7:30 PM

Even if Obama and his team manage to make the big-picture of Obamacare appear not to fund abortions, they are bound to sneak it in through the back door somehow. There will be some obscure footnote that will say, “By the way, abortions will be paid for.” Abortion is so important to liberals, they won’t let it die on the vine.

I really think there is something more sinister behind all of this……..

“I asked, “Well what is going to happen to those people we can’t reeducate, that are diehard capitalists?” And the reply was that they’d have to be eliminated.”

OH here’s another commercial:

Aunt Edith is labeling things around the house with names of family members. The niece asks why, Aunt points to rejection letter for her lymphoma treatments. Aunt Edith wants to make sure the family heirlooms go to the right people. She hands niece beautiful vase and says while being all choked up “This is my favorite vase…..put some of those lilies I love so much and think of me.”

Hehe … not much fun to be had in Buzzard’s Roost, Mississippi – but we made due when I was in high school.

We used to run down the roads at night with our lights out – and see how many armadillos we could hit. Stupid armadillos – even if your wheels miss ‘em – they will frequently do themselves in by jumping up into your undercarriage when you go by and splitting themselves like a watermelon.

Great fun – and the carnage was massive!

That’s what this health care debate reminds me of. It’s so much fun to see the Democrats in retreat – in every direction. There’s so many easy targets. It’s unreal!

They should change their mascot from the donkey to the armadillo!

Josiah on July 29, 2009 at 7:36 PM

If the Dems’ ultimate plan is to cover abortions with taxpayer dollars – and I think it is – they will have to lie about it big time at least for a few years. Way too unpopular.

In the meantime though I’m worried about the less-controversial things the irrational Left will insist upon including, under the guise of “holistic medicine” or “alternative treatments.”

I’m thinking they’ll hold up the carrot of saying that public $ won’t go to abortions (yet) while whacking us with the stick of all kinds of unproven New Age-ish quackery and pseudoscience.

I refuse to live under a government that would allow babies to be murdered on my dime. This is the clincher for me. I cannot defend or declare my allegiance to such a state. If we kill our own babies who won’t we kill??

If he so badly wants to make a name for himself why doesn’t he just start with medicare reform? We need to enact policies that will get medicare patients out of the ER that don’t need to be in the ER. My wife is an ER nurse and she sees way too many medicare paitents there who don’t need to be there. It’s cheaper for them to pay the $3 copay in the ER than it is for them to see their PCP.

Lots of wealth in the accounts of these seniors there for the taking. All we need to do is trim a bit of geriatric care here and there and bam! – spreading the wealth around.

johnnyU on July 29, 2009 at 8:46 PM

Frankly, I think the GOP and conservative groups should focus their ads on Obama and Rahm’s desire to kill old people more than the abortion boogeyman. I think it would be more effective because everyone has an old person they love. I’d also like to see some ads showing what rationed care really looks like. Show a person who has already had a few rounds of chemo being told she can’t have anymore — “the government has given me a death sentence”. That, too, would resonate with a lot of folks. And for God’s sake, get front and center in every ad and show a smiling Obama and Michelle sipping champagne somewhere with the tag line: Why do they want you to enroll in a health care program they’ll be exempted from? Tell the president your family is as important as his is.

Oh, and the Frank and Louise ads are lame. They are utterly contrived, and look like a couple of old actors being forced to speak in favor of the government. Every time I see one I picture Rahm in a back bedroom with a gun going, “That’s right. Now say you support the president’s program.”

Ris4victory on July 29, 2009 at 7:42 PM

I think the country’s divisions are less state by state and more urban versus rural (with the suburbs deciding which way politics tilts)
The blue states do have conservatives, but I believe they are more concentrated in rural and lightly suburban areas and there aren’t enough of these geographic pockets to outweigh the influence of the cities. With the red states, it is often the opposite. When you look at a county by county map of the USA’s voting patterns, doesn’t it resemble a population density map? Blue is urban, Red is rural.
One question that needs to be answered politically is how we balance the perceived needs and wants of each constituency. But if a big great red state like Texas ceded, you’d still have those lefties in Austin and the posh urban enclaves of regentrified Dallas spouting the same philospohies, so there would still be divisions.
