Gates 911 caller: Um, why am I a racist for reporting a possible crime in progress?

She saw two guys she didn’t know, one of whom was black, breaking into a house so she decided to err on the side of caution and call the cops. Ergo, racism. As it turns out, she didn’t identify either Gates or his cab driver as black in the actual call to police, a fact the media paid some attention to after the tape was released as possibly exonerating her of any malign intent. But as a lefty friend said to me today, what would it prove if she had ID’d them by race? That’s a standard detail given in any description of a suspect. Is the new reality that it’s okay to assume the worst about a break-in so long as the suspects aren’t minorities, but if they are minorities, it automatically becomes improper? Explain to me what she did that warranted the death threats here.
Meanwhile, not one, not two, but three separate liberals who follow me on Twitter thought it was important that I be informed that a cop who appears to have no connection to Crowley and who in fact works in a different police department than he does used a racial slur against Gates in an e-mail. What lesson I’m supposed to glean from that fact is unclear, but I have a hunch this Patterico post on stereotyping might be worth re-reading. Exit question: How come Whalen wasn’t invited to be part of tomorrow’s “teachable moment”/kegger at the White House? Evidently she wants to be.

Political choices of beers?
Obama goes with the safe bet, Bud Light. Who can criticize that as being elitist? It is very American and it is low alcohol to boot.
Skip Gates goes with Red Stripe, a Jamaican brew. But in reality Red Stripe is owned by Diageo PLC (who owns Baileys, J&B, Guiness, Captain Morgan, Tangueray, etc.). A faux “Afro-Caribbean” corporate beer.
And Crowley goes with Blue Moon, which is a faux microbrew* of Molson Coors. I wonder how long till someone says that is racist.
*I would have guessed Sam Adams for Crowley.

Second, it has now scared the daylights out of citizens who are doing the right thing. So, Ms. Whalen did the right thing—and she’s called a racist. It’s obvious: Everyone who is white is a racist and regardless how much the white liberals bend over to show that it’s not true we are going to have race hustlers like Sharpton and Jackson profiting from it. Eventually people are going to be cowed in enough fear that at least on the surface racism will be washed away be some utopian PC world, but under the skin all these things do is turn normal people into quiet racists.
Actually thinking about it: Obama is probably the #1 race hustler we have right now.

Fact of the matter is breaking and entering, even if it IS your own house has all the appearance of a crime. Which justified the call. Which justified Sgt Crowley. Which justified Gates being clapped in irons until there was no doubt that he wasn’t breaking into someone else’s house.

A few thoughts have crossed my mind on the subject…
Why hasn’t Lucia Whalen been invited?
What kind of beer are they going to serve?
Carling Black Label? Is that still available in the States? Colt-45? Magnum? Sam Adams? Lite? Ultra Lite? Or one of those odd-ball esoteric foo-foo beers that cost a fortune but nobody really likes…its all about the label?
And why the picnic table out back? Why not upstairs, on the veranda overlooking the South Lawn and Washington Monument? Michelle having a problem with this? Doesn’t appear to be on the guest list. Maybe because one of them “Southie” Boston crackers is coming over?

I read that her 9-11 call did not stipulate anyone’s race, just that she saw two men that looked like they were forcing their way into the house.
I remember the “black is beautiful” era and believed it, and wonder why those who started the refrain are still stuck on finding everyone so reprehensible based upon skin tone.

If the man is black then it could be consensual and to assume differently would be racist. So it’s best if she make the call in the hospital after the assault just to be safe. And when she describes the assailant to the cops she better not mention his race because that could cause racial profiling.

Indeed. There’s a reason a lot of people hesitate in calling 911. The last time someone in my household had to do so, it was because violent noises were coming from an apartment upstairs late at night. In order to deflect the blame, the upstairs neighbors later called the police on me when a closet door swung shut at a slightly earlier hour, telling them and the landlord who-knows-what. The police didn’t do a thing, and the landlord believed the wife-beater — his friend — and subsequently committed enough illegal acts to get me out of the apartment, but not before sending my roommate to the hospital via his intentional negligence.
No wonder so many people choose to let someone else worry about any illegality they witness.
