Audio: Vitter hits “wishy washy” Voinovich for anti-southern comments

posted at 3:45 pm on July 29, 2009 by Allahpundit

It’s like the Neil Young/Skynyrd feud of the early 70s except with dreary Senate soundbites instead of country-fried classic rock. In hindsight, maybe Dan Gilgoff was right: Vitter’s salute to “core conservative values” would seem to encompass social conservatism, which, needless to say, is ironic coming from him. Even so, what he says at the end about The One’s domestic agenda erasing regional differences among right-wingers is undeniably true. The more Hopenchange focuses on remaking America as a command-and-control economy, the more focused Republicans are on fiscal conservatism and the less important the northern/southern cultural divide is. In fact, I’m surprised Obama hasn’t already reversed himself on gay marriage just to try to drive a wedge between libertarians and social cons. Presumably he thinks the chance of it backfiring by alienating centrists is too great, especially with the GOP momentarily powerless in the minority, but I’ll be curious to see whether he changes his mind next year if there’s a red wave in the midterms and he’s suddenly forced to take many more political risks. Do libertarians want dictates from the federal government on a one size fits all for the country? Doesn’t seem libertarian to me.

Vitter’s salute to “core conservative values” would seem to encompass social conservatism, which, needless to say, is ironic coming from him.

Why is it so ironic?

Just because a person FAILS to live up to a set values doesn’t mean that he must condemn those values.

I’m sure Vitter wants to be a good person – and maybe he IS now – we’re all human.

It’s not like he got drunk and ran off a bridge with a woman who wasn’t his wife and killed her and then tried to cover it up.

Sound familiar?

How come no one calls Old Ted a hypocrit when he lectures people on moral values (which he does a lot)?

And Vitter – though he may endorse those values – and promote them – I’ve yet to see him condemn anyone else for not living up to them.

HondaV65 on July 29, 2009 at 3:54 PM

WashJeff on July 29, 2009 at 3:49 PM

It’s not. Libertarian is advocating for government to get out of the marriage business altogether and leave it as the social and religious construct it was intended to be. I would have voted No on Prop. 8 — not because I’m in favor of gay marriage but rather because I think inserting marriage into any constitution as some kind of fundamental right is insanity.

There was no Young/Skynyrd fued. Lynyrd Skynyrd were actually big fans of Young’s and when Neil Young heard Sweet Alabama he sent Skynyrd a message telling them he thought it was a great song and wasn’t offended. The night after thier plane crashed Young played the song in concert in tribute.

There have been studies that show that is common. I find that the people on here who have commented on someones spelling usually didn’t have very good arguements and resorted to that out of desperation for something to say.

This is liberal-speak.

Basicallly, you’re too lazy to care about the specifics contained within the statements you make. You attribute your laziness to some burgeoning societal trend, which thereby relieves you of any responsibility for your own words. To top it off, you cast those of us who devote even cursory scrutiny to our language as otherwise negligible.

Try this one:
You’re either too dumb, too lazy or too insolent to give a crap about the ordering of a few letters since your thoughts are so transparent anyway.

As far as the true “superstars” springsteen is by far the most overrated. He had 3 decent albums and then that was it. What bugs me about the guy and his politics is that he has never wrote a happy song. His songs have the same theme, “my town/state/country/world/friends/family sucks but I am brave and courageous and will overcome the suckiness”. On the country side, willie is the most overrated. He was just Waylon’s wierd friend until hollywood discovered him. And among the minor ones, guys like bon jovi and mellencamp should get down on thier knees every night and thank God for making them millionaires for no obvious reason.

Sky of blackness and sorrow ( a dream of life)
Sky of love, sky of tears (a dream of life)
Sky of glory and sadness ( a dream of life)
Sky of mercy, sky of fear ( a dream of life)
Sky of memory and shadow ( a dream of life)
Your burnin wind fills my arms tonight
Sky of longing and emptiness (a dream of life)
Sky of fullness, sky of blessed life

That song is typical. The guy has been a star and millionaire since he was about 22, I think I would have found lots happy and enjoyable things to write about. How about a song called “I’m Laughing All the Way to the Bank Before My Jet to Tahiti Leaves”.

Maybe your brain is so simplistic

Even the slowest firing synapses are part of a miraculous creation; the brain is anything but “simplistic.” Perhaps you meant my thought processes lack complexity.

You have actually proved my point, that idiots without anything substantial to say criticize other posters grammer and spelling.

Thank you for including failed grammar in your list of shortcomings.

That proves to me what I figured out about you along time ago when you expressed your awe and sexual obsession of ivy league boys, substance means nothing to you and appearance is everything.

Granted, your standard of proof is quite low. But I can’t quite glean the connection between your fantasies about me with some “ivy league boys” (sic) and materialism.

I bet every piece of clothing you own has a prominent label so everyone knows what clothes you wear. I bet everything you own was bought with the thought,”They will be impressed with me now.”

I bet that I have never thought as much about what another man wears as you have fantasized about my entire wardrobe.

Here’s some stimuli for ya. My favorite t-shirt says “Sweet Home Alabama.” My favorite jacket is lamb’s wool-lined leather bomber jacket that was worn and owned by John Entwistle. My favorite shoes are my snowboard boots.

If Vitter doesn’t win reelection, here’s hoping Stormy Davis (the porn star) does. At least Stormy can put up a good front.
