Voinovich: The GOP’s been taken over by southerners
posted at 9:59 pm on July 28, 2009 by Allahpundit
This ought to go over well.
“We got too many Jim DeMints (R-S.C.) and Tom Coburns (R-Ok.). It’s the southerners. They get on TV and go ‘errrr, errrrr.’ People hear them and say, ‘These people, they’re southerners. The party’s being taken over by southerners. What they hell they got to do with Ohio?’,” Voinovich said.
Salon notes that Voinovich is not the sole Republican speaking out against the regional isolation. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty acknowledged last year that the Republicans were facing increasingly difficult competition in large parts of the country, including Voinovich’s Ohio.
“We cannot be a majority governing party when we essentially cannot compete in the Northeast, we are losing our ability to compete in Great Lakes states, we cannot compete on the West Coast, we are increasingly in danger of competing in the mid-Atlantic states, and the Democrats are now winning some of the Western states,” Pawlenty said.
Dan Gilgoff thinks he’s using code to take a shot at evangelicals. I don’t. It’s more a matter of cultural divides complicating the idea of representation. The more like you your government spokesman is, the more comfortable you’ll feel that he or she’s looking out for your particular interests. It’s not a question of religion, it’s a question of everything that informs regional differences. But Voinovich will be pilloried anyway for bringing it up, partly because he’s got a record as a RINO and therefore is presumptively wrong on everything and partly because rural “authenticity” is such a powerful meme these days in grassroots politics. The south, being the font of rural authenticity (of which “traditional values” is a key ingredient), is basically beyond reproach, so in theory you really can’t have too many southerners. Exit question: Is Massachusetts/Michigan Mitt the solution?

Presiding over failures like the “stimulus”,broken promises, and corruption that the Obama administration has revealed itself to the Nation as the bungling idiots that they are, they have now decided that the only place they can cut costs is in our military.

The Obama administration is tanking our economy, gutting our national defenses during war time, and looked at as a naive and complete joke on the international stage.
Democrats have filibuster proof majorities in the House and Senate but Obama is so inept and his policies like Cap and Trade/Health care, and closing Gitmo are so bad that he can’t get them through.
So who does Voinovich decide to go after,Southern men and women.

The Republican party is always dying if you believe the MSM. This is the reality of my lifetime:
Republican – Eisenhower
Democrat – Kennedy/Johnson
Republican – Nixon/Ford
Democrat – Carter
Republican – Reagan
Republican – Bush 41
Democrat – Clinton
Republican – Bush 43
Democrat – Obama
4 years of Obambi will be a catastrophe for America but good for the Republican party. In 2012 people will be clawing to vote against the Democrat.

And the really pathetic part is that, whenever you ask libs what has ever come out of government spending, they always cite things that came from … defense! They love the interstate highways. Can’t get them to shut up about the whole thing. So, not only do they weaken us, but they take away the most effective government spending there is. Yippee!
The idiot Dems prefer to build toilets.
He’s nasty, too. Really nasty. And arrogant, for no reason whatsoever, as he is constantly making a fool of himself.
Sure, there are those problems, but our foreign team is a pretty big hit. I think they have sell-out performances of the show when the US team flies in for a rollicking visit. The home country is always guaranteed to get some big international press out of it, making them look great compared to the stumbling, bumbling, gaffe-prone, ineffective US team of 14 year olds. Usually, we just make babbling, cackling fools of ourselves and then Shrillary breaks her finger, or her wrist, or something. People love it. It’s like the old time circus rolling around. So, at least we have humor lining the walls of the abyss.
We have really dodged a few bullets, luckily. But these things aren’t anything near dead. They are fatal pieces, each one of them, and they are still walking around. This Washington junta are such a bunch of lunatics, that they could try to pull anything. And they are relentless in their pursuit of power.

You are right, I should have phrased that differently.
This last election my main worry was that the Senate would go to the democrats at 60. It is one thing to have a far left marxist as President, another thing to have unfettered power to push his ideology. The fact Obama has it but is eating up his political capital at an alarming rate is just more proof of his arrogance and ignorance.
Obama will still probably get much of his agenda passed, but I think a good bit of it will be massively watered down creating serious discontent within his liberal base.
100% correct.

Democrats are however winning the Western intermountain states, that is a fact. And the GOP is becoming more of a regional Southeast/Bible Belt party, and increasingly more of a evangelical party.
Western Republicans, except for Utah, have been traditionally geared towards Frontier style live and let live, and not southeastern evangelicalism, and the increasing sway Evangelicals have is turning places like Montana, Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico into Democratic states.
While Voinoviches shot at southern culture was unfortunate, the point that it is becoming more of a party that appeals towards bible belt evangelicals, is true.

Rural authenticity? This whole argument is wrong, your pitting what has been mostly an agrarian area to an industrial area with the necessary differences. Much of industry that is left, has trended down south because of “Right to Work” law in attempt to keep the unions under control. I can’t say this for a fact but areas in the north that still derive their income from agriculture are probably represented by a Republican or a “blue” dog. I don’t think I will get unnecessarily insulted by an older gentleman who is spouting his own prejudices that don’t reflect the current situation. He is sad that the parade has passed him by and I am bit sorry for him.

Nothing worse than Southerners. The nation needs to be ruled by Northern and Western luminaries such as Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer (California), Obama (Illinois), Barney Frank (Massachusetts), Chuck Schumer (New York), and Harry Reid (Nevada) and their illuminative ilk. That will keep us on the straight (sorry, Barney) and narrow.
On second thought, that’s a terrible idea. That was really my first thought too.
bradley11 on July 29, 2009 at 7:26 AM
I’m with Gilgoff. I am a Southerner and quite religious (though not an evangelical) and I think the GOP has pushed a lot of people out of the party with religious conservatism. It’s a fact that as a society becomes more advanced, they move further away from religious conservatism. This is what we are hoping happens among Muslims: Give them a modern culture so they stop becoming suicide bombers.
The GOP needs to return to straight fiscal conservatism, small government, and strong national defense. As for social issues like abortion and gay marriage, the party’s plank should simply be that those things should be decided by a vote of the people or the state legislatures, not the federal government or the judiciary.

Good post AP. Will pass on the exit question as I don’t think Mitt is even one of the candidate solutions for this particular problem.
Three-part strategy to unlimited dominance in the U.S. Senate:
1. Enact radical and punitive state economic policies in existing, Democratic-leaning or swing states.
2. Induce free enterprise-loving residents to escape the tyranny by moving themselves and their businesses out of the state, into one of the remaining, predominantly Southern, states.
3. Run/elect increasingly radical candidates during each new election cycle as the locus of consensus shifts leftward according to the preferences of the remaining residents. Unless other forces intervene, the state will support increasingly radical senators due purely to demographics.
Sure, those depopulated, angry states won’t have any people or businesses left, but the folks that do remain will elect two senators each who are able to ram anything through a filibuster-proof Senate.

Funny how the GOP is only Southern when there are red states in all areas of the country. I know for sure that the Democrat party has been taken over by the Nazi Pelosi far left Marxist hippie leftovers. America is starting to wake up and it’s not good for the Marxists.
Something that troubles me a little. Why are Republicans red and the Democrats blue? Shouldn’t the Marxists be the ones that are red??????
adamsmith on July 29, 2009 at 7:43 AM
Kafir, I completely agree with what you’ve written above. A winning strategy to defeat the Marxists. Abortion is a losing issue everytime. You can make abortion illegal, and as long as there are companies manufacturing wire coat hangers it’s not going to stop. Reminds me of the failed war on drugs. If the Republicans were to take your advise, I’d join the Republican Party again. I agree with everything other than the social conservative ideas of telling others how to live. Good post. You’re a thinker and not an ideologue…..

That’s how it works folks (regional stereotyping) I am from the Northwest and live in the South, it is nothing like I was told it was going to be. People have regional prejudices. Last year, Georgie V was in downtown Cleveland at the opening of what he called ‘his proudest achievement’: a $200MM bus line and redevelopment project on Euclid Ave. Those buses aren’t very full when they go by now, and most of the designated redevelopment area hasn’t been touched, but the small businesses driven out by 2 years of construction are still out of business. A proud moment indeed.

JiangxiDad on July 29, 2009 at 8:39 AM
And what the Sam Hill part of the credit does Voinovich own with the GOP losing in Ohio?
From what I can see, ‘southerners’ is a code word for ‘evangelical’
Seems to me McCain was the candidate of the non-Southerners, from campaign finance reform, to amnesty he was RINO of the Northland and he flopped because Northerners already had an Obama who also was black
I think Voinovich should expand the RINO strategy and throw the stinking ‘southerners’ out of the party. Then he can watch it blossom
Unspoken in this remark is the assumption that they cannot ‘compete’ if they cede anything to the non-RINOs.
Here is a clue to Pawlenty et al: a political party is a voluntary assembly of like minded individuals in this free country. You can try to force members accept your politics and end up with McCain, or you can send forth a candidate that represents the majority of your members.
The convention used to be the means of convincing the grass roots of their common goals. It is now a PR propaganda session with expesnsive videos and ads to mind control the delegates. We know how well that worked.
If your party leaders do not represent the base, how are you going to convince outsiders to join your side?
I see a huge conservative yearning in my blue collar SE Mich land. The Warren voters are there and they are angry. But they blame the economy on the conservatives because of NAFTA and WTO, and Bush beat them over the head with amnesty for two terms to make sure they knew who wanted to export jobs and bring in scabs.
Romney did great in Michigan because of his family but mainly because he outright said the jobs can come back and he said it as if he meant it. That was the opposite of McCain. In that sense he represents the Holy Grail for conservatives but he would have to assasinate the leaders of the RINO brigade to run on that ticket
The RINOs cannot stop telling the midwest the days of manufacturing are over. The libs say it too, they want windmills and pasture, but the libs are speaking to the converted.
Pawlenty and Voinovich can take a flying leap. If they are leading I will not be following. Libs are dismamtling the country, but the globalists have already ceded the concept of a country, or borders so there is no lesser of two evils
Under Bush the Bankruptcy laws were spiked to force the sales of domiciles, to let the bankers get the last crumbs before the crash, while Bush pumped the nation with illegals and ranted aginst patriots who saw him ignoring the laws and borders. This is the memory the GOP has to erase, and good luck with the RINOs working their magic
Those who consider want abortion to be out as an issue have to contend with the fact that it is a national issue, not a local issue. The current healthcare debate is about Federal law, which as proposed gives no conscience clause to providers who do not want to murder. The battle has to be a national battle, because Federal laws are being crafted constantly in this arena.
You can tell voters to shut up and accept their fate, but this shut up and vote strategy is killing the GOP. Shut up and vote McCain because the guys at the top want him, we need amnesty, and without us, you are nothing. Great PR
Pro life is gaining demographically, and that is because the pro lifers did not shut up, but stayed loud

The GOP can’t compete in the Northeast because they continue to serve up RINOs. They’re essentially pitting liberals against liberals. The southerners are the conservatives. That’s why they’re making all the right noise.
The northeast and west are suffering for electing liberals. I say let them continue to elect liberals until they’ve suffered enough.
I say that they can’t be the governing party until they start acting like conservatives…you know like the southerners. Whining ain’t gonna get it done old man!

Of course “Weeping George” doesnt get along with those “Southerners”. Jim Demint or Tom Coburn werent on the Senate floor on that fateful night when Voinovich was making sure the Dems had their 3 votes for porkulus.
Guess what George, Ohioans dont much care for you either. And truth-be-known, we arent real sure about your handpicked successor either.
Someone like Voinovich , that ignores our core beliefs, votes for socialism and is too busy to make sure Ohioans serving in Afghan get ballots, …….good riddance.

California meltdown sure they are going to keep their representation it’s been working out so well :)

If we didn’t have regional differences, we wouldn’t need representatives from all the districts of each state in touch with their local populations. We could just vote for a bunch of uninformed elites from the biggest cities and trust them to know what rural districts want or need. Heaven for AP, maybe, but not for the rest of us.
Voinovich is trying to pander to Ohioans to save his sorry ass. Pandering is not representation, but he doesn’t know the difference. BTW, Mitt is not the solution.
SKYFOX on July 29, 2009 at 9:19 AM
See, letting us go in the 1850s/1860s would have worked out well for the RINOs and the libs wouldn’t it?
Maybe we can try again and they’ll be glad to have us leave.

He saw Bolton’s mustache and cried, knowing that the mustache itself is more of a man than he is.

He needs to join Arlene Spector and join the Dem Party. Maybe put on a pair Mom jeans and go to the White House for beers.

I’m from Ohio. I can’t recall how many times this guy raised taxes as governor? I believe it was way over 20 times.
Under RINO in the dictionary has this guy’s picture. I never voted for him nor would I.

i wonder what the National Association of Southern Americans has to say about all of this
gatorboy on July 29, 2009 at 9:33 AM
Dear Voinovich;
Go to hail (southern )!!! and join the commie party! (dims )
grapeknutz on July 29, 2009 at 9:35 AM
Bill Clinton and Al Gore have to be laughing their a sses off. “Errrr …. errrr … heh, heh.”
Meanwhile, we just elected a President who is so inexperienced and ignorant that “Errrrr … errrr” is about the smartest thing he has to say, and he says it every time he talks. Doesn’t seem to bother his Harvard PhD supports. Huh…wonder why?
And then there is Senator Whinybitch’s favored manner of public discourse, which is to start crying and sniveling and hugging his fellow 78 year old Senate buddies.
Eff this sissy jerkoff.
Jaibones on July 29, 2009 at 9:39 AM
hate being late to threads because toooo many comments to read through, so forgive me if it’s been said…
I live in the south. And we’ve been wondering lately where all the ‘southerners’ have gone. There are so many transplants from up north. huh
bridgetown on July 29, 2009 at 9:42 AM
Yes, Jimmy, and the Electoral College map backs you up on this.
Between 1980 and 2008:
LOST electoral college votes:
_________________________________________________
New York : – 10
Pennsylv. : – 6
Ohio : -5
Michigan : -4
Illinois: -5
Indiana: -2
GAINED electoral college votes:
_________________________________________________
Florida : + 10
Texas : +8
Georgia : +3
All other southern states see no change or -1/+1.
David2.0 on July 29, 2009 at 9:42 AM
Allah, both your comments and those of Groinovich were just STOOOOOpid.
Oklahoma is more Midwestern or Western than Southern, for one.
And grass-roots values don’t belong to any region, though they certainly seem not to exist in the area you occupy.
If you and Groinovich want more Republicans without Southern accents, get cracking, dummy.

Is the north going to invade the south again?
Johan Klaus on July 29, 2009 at 9:58 AM
The GOP has to find a way to expand its geographical reach. Otherwise, it is irrelevant and will go the way of the Whigs. As far as “traditional values”, who gets to define them. I have lived both in the NE and South. They are quite different culturally. The Founding Fathers understood this and they placed the 10th Amendment in the Constitution. So again, who gets to define “traditional values”?
Chekote on July 29, 2009 at 9:58 AM
That’s kinda one of those, “If you have to ask…” questions.
Ragspierre on July 29, 2009 at 10:02 AM
This country is diverse. That is why we need federalism. Trying to impose one set of values across the country is not going to work.
Chekote on July 29, 2009 at 10:06 AM
It’s the drawl. The soft and somewhat melodic tang is somewhat mesmerizing, and once they have you they work hard at holding your attention on them.
But, the trick is not to ask them any questions because they do not have the answers.
MSGTAS on July 29, 2009 at 10:07 AM
Um, you don’t think Trent Lott was any better in terms of “supporting the troops” I hope. GV is a slimeball, but the GOP has known that for years, just like they knew about Lott and Stevens up in AK. I wish the party had some way of forcing corrupt or idiotic folks like GV and the others to retire.
Remember, the GOP “leadership” guy persuaded Mark Foley to run again even though Foley wanted to retire…..with that kind of “leadership,” it’s no wonder the GOP is in the minority.
Of course GV would prefer to blame it on Southerners like DeMint and Coburn and Sessions. Corrupt assholes always try to trash the honorable men around them. It’s kinda classic office politics.
funky chicken on July 29, 2009 at 10:08 AM
Two things:
1. What the hell are you talking about?
2. Isn’t it maybe a good idea to impose SOME values universally…ya-know, like murder is a bad thing?
Ragspierre on July 29, 2009 at 10:09 AM
Much better to turn to NE elitists…or the geniuses in Kulifornia.

Are you talking universal values or traditional values? You are illustrating my point. In the main article the author talks about “traditional values”. What does it mean?
Chekote on July 29, 2009 at 10:13 AM
Agree about federalism and your other points. If the GOP tries to run nationally with a regional identity it will face long odds.
dedalus on July 29, 2009 at 10:14 AM
As a southerner, I say to Voinovich, clean your own house first.
moonsbreath on July 29, 2009 at 10:15 AM
Voinovich is right. The GOP is dominated by Southerners. I really don’t understand why a statement of fact is so insulting. It is not good for a NATIONAL party to be dominated by ONE region.
Chekote on July 29, 2009 at 10:15 AM
Democrats are winning more in Western states, because western states are becoming more urbanized. Nothing more, nothing less. It has nothing to do with any alleged domination of evangelicals in the Republican party.

Voinovich is, was, and always will be an empty suit. The faster his seat is taken by Rob Portman the better.
