Voinovich: The GOP’s been taken over by southerners
posted at 9:59 pm on July 28, 2009 by Allahpundit
This ought to go over well.
“We got too many Jim DeMints (R-S.C.) and Tom Coburns (R-Ok.). It’s the southerners. They get on TV and go ‘errrr, errrrr.’ People hear them and say, ‘These people, they’re southerners. The party’s being taken over by southerners. What they hell they got to do with Ohio?’,” Voinovich said.
Salon notes that Voinovich is not the sole Republican speaking out against the regional isolation. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty acknowledged last year that the Republicans were facing increasingly difficult competition in large parts of the country, including Voinovich’s Ohio.
“We cannot be a majority governing party when we essentially cannot compete in the Northeast, we are losing our ability to compete in Great Lakes states, we cannot compete on the West Coast, we are increasingly in danger of competing in the mid-Atlantic states, and the Democrats are now winning some of the Western states,” Pawlenty said.
Dan Gilgoff thinks he’s using code to take a shot at evangelicals. I don’t. It’s more a matter of cultural divides complicating the idea of representation. The more like you your government spokesman is, the more comfortable you’ll feel that he or she’s looking out for your particular interests. It’s not a question of religion, it’s a question of everything that informs regional differences. But Voinovich will be pilloried anyway for bringing it up, partly because he’s got a record as a RINO and therefore is presumptively wrong on everything and partly because rural “authenticity” is such a powerful meme these days in grassroots politics. The south, being the font of rural authenticity (of which “traditional values” is a key ingredient), is basically beyond reproach, so in theory you really can’t have too many southerners. Exit question: Is Massachusetts/Michigan Mitt the solution?

So let me get this straight:
The reason GOP hacks like Voinovich and Pawlenty cannot prevail in their own states is that Southern Republicans prevail in theirs?
Hmmm. Is there a video on YouTube of a voter from Cleveland telling Voinovich, “Senator, I’d love to vote for you, but I just can’t stand that Jim DeMint?”
Go back to crying about your grandchildren, Voinovich.
What a contemptible hack.

Wait… Wait… Wait.
I thought Rush Limbaugh (previously live from Sunny South Florida via New York City, until Bloomberg screwed up the place) was what took over the Republican Party, thus we’re being run out of New York.
Or alternatively I thought our greatest leaders were David Frum and Colin Powell, two good DC-NY belt operatives.
You’re confusing my Voinovich. My poor South(of Boston)ern brain can’t handle your impressive insight.

Voinovich is a POS from the liberal Cleveland suburbs. He’a already announced he won’t be running in 2010. Why can’t he shut his fat a** up, serve out his term, and retire?
I suppose one never knows, but I do think that Rob Portman, if elected, will be much more to the liking of conservatives.

If Republicans aren’t making headway in the Northeast, Great Lakes areas, Northwest, etc. it’s because of the local Republican candidates being offered. Remember in the end ALL politics is local.

Jeff from WI on July 28, 2009 at 10:10 PM
The solution to Voinovich’s southern problem is Federalism, Ohioans can live as they choose, and we southerners can live as we choose.
Under federalism we all come together on issues of national, and constitutional, importance.
This was the Founder’s intent in the first place and it was the power hungry statists that have pushed for centralized, top down control of our lives. Perhaps George can step up and be a leader on this issue. Then we snarling southerners can go our own way.

The best thing to come out of Taxachusetts was Dean Barnett, so let’s get serious. If you want to talk about correcting regional under-representation in the GOP, Alaska is a great place to start.
Heh.
Terrie on July 28, 2009 at 10:11 PM
American by birth. Southern BY THE GRACE OF GOD!
Seriously, most conservatives favor limited government for EVERY region. That’s the tie. It doesn’t matter if they speak with a drawl, a tick, or a scowl. If they are talking about less government, I’m behind them 100%.
I have a question though. . . is Alaska now considered a Southern State? I mean people in the South likely accept her as one of them. . . even though Alaska is probably as far from the South as anywhere.
Politics has been very contentious in the South because of our diversity. It makes politics more like a sporting event with claims of racism, uncle tom, and pandering everywhere. When the ‘majority’ race is about 52% of the voters, the issues are different than a place where ‘majority’ means 80% of the voters of one race.
North Carolina and Virginia are happily trending Democrat. If you don’t want the South to be Republican, that can be remedied fairly easily. . . but I don’t think you’d like being the third party to the Libertarian resurgence.

You’re going to love how I slip this one in here.
You know all the hoopla about BHO paying for part of the rent for the Martha’s Vineyard rental on the $20 million plus vacation estate, as if he’s being conscientious and considerate of the American taxpayer? While the Clinton’s stayed with friends on the Vineyard, and paid nothing?
The truth?
BHO had to rent a house on the Vineyard (from a Republican, no less) because (a) nobody invited the POTUS to stay with them, and (b) there aren’t any Democrats out there.
Last I looked, Martha’s Vineyard was in Massachusetts.
[That's supposed to be funny -- there have to be some Dem's out there -- it's Massachusetts where you can throw a rock and hit one -- but it's still funny, tongue slightly in cheek.]

He’s stating the obvious but underlying this is a real issue which was brought up by Powell today. The country is changing and Republicans will have to adjust accordingly. This needn’t mean that they have to abandon any of their core values but perhaps they should look at some of the popular perceptions of the party and take steps so public has an electable alternative to the Dems. Also, the slogans which allowed them to dominate over the last few decades no longer resonate. Adapting and evolving would help rather than focusing about accents and regions. The last thing they should do is get labeled as being a reactionary movement.

To clarify my previous comment… I think the notion that the party would benefit if southerners stop winning–which he seems to imply there–is completely ridiculous. I was just saying that a perception that the GOP is a “southern” party could affect the electoral chances of candidates in other regions, and he isn’t completely off the mark in that respect.
DaveS on July 28, 2009 at 10:17 PM
I grew up in western Pennsylvania. Full of incompetent, corrupt Democrats who ruined industry in that part of state and who are now trying to kill coal.
Nearby Johnstown is “represented” by thieving, traitor scum John Murtha. I have 20 years in the Navy and I’ll spit in that ex-Marine’s (and I emphasize the “ex”) eye if I ever see that old jackass.
I lived in Virginia for 10 years until that state went blue.
6 days after Barack Obama’s inaugeration, I left Virginia for Texas. Best decision I ever made. Just like Davy Crockett said, “You men can go to hell. I’m going to Texas.”
Northeastern liberals suck. They want people to have to pay $500K for a decent size home. The only people they believe should live well, are the rich. The middle class and the poor they want dependent on politicians and trust fund scum like the Kennedys, for crumbs.
Here we have a Governor who is a real man who stands up to traitor scum, communist “democrats”. He told Barack Obama to take a hike long before Bammy’s popularity ratings started crumbling. He’s for the 10th amendment.
This clown Voinovich can go screw himself and go fellate Barack Obama for all I care. If all the Republicans are going to be are Democrat lite, then they can go to hell too.
