Specter on Sotomayor’s “wise Latina” comment: What’s wrong with a little ethnic pride?

Via Breitbart, a reminder that if you haven’t made your primary donation to Joe Sestak and general election donation to Pat Toomey yet, there’s no time like the present. The answer to this moron’s question: There’s nothing wrong with a little ethnic pride, but declaring that your gender and ethnicity makes you a superior judge to those not similarly blessed goes beyond a “little,” a fact that would have become instantly clear had a white male said the same thing. So reliably in the tank for the Democrats has this tool become that he’s now defending a remark Sotomayor herself won’t defend.
But never mind that. I challenge you to get through the part where he talks about women’s “insides” being different from men’s “insides” without giggling.

I actually agree with him on this, to a point. The reaction to that comment has been a bit overblown.
And it detracted from what IMO should have been the core of the case against her – the process by which those 2nd Circuit panels attempted to bury the Didden and Ricci cases.

Pride in being a woman and ethnic pride? Arlen, you are a dunce. The position that you confirmed her for isn’t a “woman”. Or an officer of the ethnic pride police. She was nominated for the supreme court – which means he/she/it/whatever follows, and makes sure everyone else follows the Constitution. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to believe.
They tell me men and women are no different. Neither are boys and girls.
They tell me the races are no different.
They tell me it would be racist to be proud of being White, or for an all-White organization to exist.
But then they tell me that a female Latina would make a better judge than a White male precisely because of her gender and race, that it’s good to instill racial pride in Black young people (with African-American History Month and such), and that all-Black fraternities and such are just fine.
When you all get this straightened out, let me know so I can embrace the politically correct set of beliefs.

Let’s acknowledge the obvious here. Specter is a rat bastard political traitor. He jumped parties for the simple reason he knew he couldn’t win his next election as a Republican and wasn’t ashamed of saying so. Because of that, he’s the second-most junior Senator on the committee ahead of Al Franken (who I have no idea why he is there in the first place). Specter is not trusted by Democrats with good reason. He will not be voting against the party positions until he gets reelected. He will pander any way he can and this is one of those situations.

There’s also the problem of what, specifically, a person is supposed to take pride in about his/her race.
Saying that members of my race tend to excel in particular quality (1) means invoking a stereotype, and (2) implies that members of other races tend to excel less in that quality, which most would find offensive.
A little game: Pick any race and name one quality its members should be proud of without being offensive. Anyone?

If she had left it at “I believe I will be wise on the bench because of my legal experience and capability” we wouldn’t be looking for stones to cast. But she didn’t — she had to claim that ethnicity and sex made her putative peers less capable on the bench than herself.
As for being proud of ethnicity, we all do it — we have our grandparents or parents who used their cultural wisdom to rise in America — or, in some cases, to die for America (and then to be buried in a pauper’s grave in an area of Forest Lawn reserved for those not beloved by the majority). We are justly proud of these “not quite mainstream” Americans, but when we get carried away and think that our association with them somehow makes us better…

I don’t understand. Sotomayer might be a judge but upon hearing her stupidity her gender and ethnic background would only be useful on cleaning tips or cooking tacos.
Whereas upon listening to someone with a brain like Malkin both her gender and her ethnicity might actually be of some additional value to a decision.

I used to really admire Specter. Since those days, I have moved to the right and Specter has moved to the left. I hope that Specter has also moved to the stupid, because I don’t remember him being like this.
It’s not that I support term limits, but some people like Kennedy, Byrd, Thurmond, and Specter need to be taken aside by the Senate leadership and strongly suggest that they retire. They’d be happier.

I guess it all depends on how you define “pride”, The Roman Catholic Church lists pride as the most deadly of the seven deadly sins. I subscribe to the definition of pride in the first sense which comes from Augustine: “the love of ones own excellence.” I believe that true pride can only be found from actions you take. I argue that when pride manifests itself as a high opinion of ones ethnicity it loses all meaning. Now if what I am saying doesn’t make good sense. If you find my words to be “nonsense” than I recommend you stop reading my posts in the future. Also, I have no interest in going to a NAACP convention because, like you said, I might not make it out alive. I prefer to spew to “civilized” people who only call me a coward and tell me to “piss off”.
