Palin Truther-in-chief oddly skeptical of Birtherism
posted at 8:49 pm on July 28, 2009 by Allahpundit
Mary Katharine does the honors but this post was bound to emerge somewhere in the blogosphere sooner or later. Like Kaus says, it’s fish in a barrel. The only person who won’t grasp the irony and hypocrisy instantly is Sullivan himself, who used to have as his tagline this line from Orwell: “To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle.” Little did he know how constant.
It doesn’t happen terribly often, but I’m with Andrew Sullivan on the need to lay Obama birther-ism to rest— a subject on which he’s been blogging with some energy over the last day.
Indeed, it’s almost as if birthers have allowed an intense and sometimes irrational dislike of a political figure to lead them to conspiracy theories while rationalizing the indulgence with concerns about the vetting process and rants about the failed responsibilities of a complicit media. It’s almost like they continue to ignore evidence to the contrary of such theories in order to preserve their favored narrative long after the question (and election) is settled, even when induced to abandon it by friends, adversaries, and Occam’s Razor alike.
My only knock on MK is that she limits herself to Sully’s Trig-related conspiracy theories. In fact, his nuttiness goes way beyond that, or at least it did before I quit reading him two years ago. See this post from May 2007 for a few of his greatest anti-”neocon” hits. That was occasioned by him having the gall to accuse Michelle of 9/11 Trutherism, yet another instance of his bizarre blind spot to his own paranoia leaving him exposed as a hypocrite. Ed’s catalogued other examples. Oh, and he’s evidently still a believer in Trig Truth even though he now apparently claims to be agnostic about it: See Ace’s latest for details of that. Exit question from that post: He’s not seriously onto Willow as the prime suspect in Trig’s mysterious birth, is he?

I still have a few un-answered questions about Obamas citizenship. I am not a truther, but they do ask some very legitimate questions. And since the left wing of congress actually had hearings about mccains eligibility, I say truthers…..Have at it! but thats just me…

You have to go through all sorts of mental contortions to be a Truther or a Trig Truther or any of those. Whereas in order to be a Birther, apparently all you need to do is ask what’s the deal with Obama’s birth certificate.
Jim Treacher on July 28, 2009 at 9:00 PM
I find it ironic that a gay man who came of age at a time when homosexuality was very much despised, who must certainly have faced the worst sort of bullying in his youth, would now stoop to bullying a mentally disabled child. Because that’s what this is, make no mistake. He is publicly calling the child a bastard — a child who will never have the intellectual ability to defend himself against Sullivan’s accusations.
To put it bluntly, Andrew Sullivan is a monster.
I’m ashamed to admit I used to read him. He really was good, once upon a time.
Caiwyn on July 28, 2009 at 9:00 PM
Bill Clinton is the answer.
He was the second gunman on the grassy knoll.
He was Sirhan Sirhan’s driver.
He talked Jimmy Hoffa into going for a ride.
He watched Hillary kill Vince Foster.
He hired Timothy McVeigh.
He knocked up Willow with Trig because David Letterman dared him to do it.
Finally, he topped it off by creating Obama’s COLB in photoshop, then threatened everyone from Andrew Sullivan, to Jim DeMint, to the Hawaiian governor, to Mary Katherine Ham, to keep quiet.
Dude’s been busy.
MadisonConservative on July 28, 2009 at 9:01 PM
That sums it up the best I’ve seen.
I can’t figure out what the birfers hope to accomplish with this…vindication? And, according to comments on some of the prominent lefty blogs, the birfers are simply racist.
Obviously, the racism claim isn’t true. So what is your goal and why, birfers? Truthfully…
JetBoy on July 28, 2009 at 9:01 PM
I can’t recall which conservative first pointed this out but he (or she) was close when: “Sullivan is our [i.e., the right's] Gore Vidal.”

I have no doubt that there is something there in the filty liar’s upbringing that would kill him if it comes out. I also have no doubt that John Kerry hid his real military records since he only released a redacted copy of his discharge signed by the Secretary of the Navy when he was in Congress.
None of this matters. You vet a candidate before his/her election. The filthy liar is President. Better to make him fail now than to spend all this time chasing shadows.
highhopes on July 28, 2009 at 9:05 PM
I think the majority believe it’s true and see it as the surefire way to get Obama out of the White House. They might be blind to facts because we’re dealing with Obama, but that doesn’t mean they don’t believe it.
As to the summary, I think it was more directed at Sully himself than the Birthers, though it does apply to both.
Esthier on July 28, 2009 at 9:06 PM
The first 6 months of the Obama presidency have been a hash. The elites whose credibility and vanity are at stake need something they can latch onto, hence the constant birther stuff. Hot Air, don’t feed the FIRE!

HondaV65 on July 28, 2009 at 9:06 PM
Lol the only reason why Sullivan is so ardent in his Trig truthersism and so skeptical when it comes to Obama birtherisim is because one conspiracy theory revolves around a powerful male politician and the other revolves around a powerful female politician and we all know that Sullivan is afraid of girls and thinks they all have cooties.

Andrew Sullivan: The Top Ten Reasons Conservatives Should Vote For Obama
10. A body blow to racial identity politics
9. Less debt
8. A return to realism and prudence in foreign policy
7. An ability to understand the difference between listening to generals and delegating foreign policy to them.
6. Temperament. Obama has the coolest, calmest demeanor of any president since Eisenhower
5. Faith. Obama’s fusion of Christianity and reason, his non-fundamentalist faith, is a critical bridge between the new atheism and the new Christianism.
4. A truce in the culture war
3. Two words: President Palin.
2. Conservative reform. Until conservatism can get a distance from the big-spending, privacy-busting, debt-ridden, crony-laden, fundamentalist, intolerant, incompetent and arrogant faux conservatism of the Bush-Cheney years, it will never regain a coherent message to actually govern this country again
1. The War Against Islamist terror. The strategy deployed by Bush and Cheney has failed
If you are serious about the war on terror
the only serious candidate is Barack Obama”

Conservatives who spend time throwing stones at the birthers are idiots imo.
There are better things to do with your time. Attack Andrew Sullivan, or Oliver Stone, or Michael Moore, or Whoopie Goldburg,or any of the plethora of whackjob conspiracies on the left.
It’s kind of stupid to attack the birthers when you ignore the conspiracies the left is throwing at you.
I believe Obama is a citizen – I also believe there is SOMETHING on the birth certificate he doesn’t want seen. So I enjoy the show the birthers put on.
If you want to attack the birthers – congratulations – you’re helping to defend Ogabe the same way David Astroturf and Rahm the Ballerina are doing.
The difference is – you’re doing it for free and they, at least, are getting paid.
Nuff said.

There seems to be a pattern emerging here. Leave Obama in office to sink the democrats instead of getting Plugs or, even worse, Pelosi, to fill his empty shoes. They want to shoot the stupid fish in the barrel, Obama. Then, at the end of his term, blow it wide open and take him out of the record books. Kind of makes sense, even though I would like to see him frog marched out of the Oval Office.
suzyk on July 28, 2009 at 9:14 PM
You are wrong. The first six months of the filthy liar’s reign of terror have been a complete failure.
The filthy liar came in as the post racial guy who could get bipartisan support for his initiatives. Virtually nothing of importance has been passed with bipartisan support. The stimulus bill was a good example as is the way the Democrats literally bought votes to get cap & tax out of the House. The filthy liar himself launched a race war with his comments over an insignificant altercation in Cambridge.
The first six months of this administration have not been a hash they have been a dismal failure hidden largely by the state-run media.
highhopes on July 28, 2009 at 9:14 PM
And I believe that Conservatives have spent more time crapping on the birthers than they did defending Sarah Palin on the “Who’s Trig’s Mom?” issue.
Priorities.
HondaV65 on July 28, 2009 at 9:16 PM
Sullivan should just shut up and stop opining about anybody’s birth certificate.

Andrew Sullivan is a pig and hope he runs into Todd Palin in an alley. Obama is a massive fail and I hate to admit it, but I am enjoying seeing him crash so spectacularly. The damage to our country will be done, but at least he will not have a second term.

Yup, we’ve never said a peep about the 9/11 truthers, the FEMA campers, the Bush-third-termers, the Katrina-was-setters, or any of the rest of the goddamned lunatics we regularly facepalm ourselves over.
Seriously, please don’t try to rewrite history to make it fit your new paradigm. Think of it this way. If you really think there’s something to it, then the majority of people scoffing at this, including, it seems, most conservatives, will all have egg on their faces, instead of you.

AUINSC on July 28, 2009 at 9:42 PM
I like how all of a sudden these two newspapers claim they didn’t print birth announcements unless it came from the state…oh, but they do now…but not back then. Back in 1961 it was just soooo impossible to allow someone to phone in a birth announcement. We all know how so very careful they were about everything back then.
Wouldn’t dare leave your car running while you ran into the store-constant worries about the effects of fatty foods and cigarettes-so much fear about terrorism; was a real pain at the airports let me tell ya-definitely locked your house at night or if you went somewhere-wouldn’t even think about hitchhiking because of all the crazies in the news.
Of course, it is well-known that everyone was born in a state hospital back then and it had to be within 50 miles of their residence. I remember reading about that law, but can’t remember what it’s called now?
I guess if you wanted to announce your wedding anniversary, you were just SOL-”the state didn’t inform us.” If a kid was born elsewhere or not in a hospital-again, SOL? No, just bring in a birth certificate (if they even really needed that-I’m sure there’s all sorts of people back then especially who would have fake birth announcements printed in their local newspapers…had to be on their guard you know!) and they’d print it. But a birth certificate does not mean the one we’re looking for anyway.
But whoever WND talked to surely must be believable. I’m sure that birth announcement protocols are something they’ve spent many working hours discussing and tweaking in the last 47 years. Just such a HUGE part of their paper they must have rigorous rules about this.
Yeah, right.
Dr. ZhivBlago on July 28, 2009 at 9:43 PM

That’s not quite birther-specific…
Dissent is fine…lord knows I’ve dissented from majority opinion from time to time…but spending so much time and effort on something that’s a moot point (Yes, it’s a moot point) is only damaging the GOP brand. Even tho it’s really not a GOP majority opinion by far.
