Video: Palin’s valediction to the media

posted at 8:47 am on July 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Sarah Palin said goodbye to Alaska as governor yesterday, and she didn’t let the occasion pass without shooting a couple of well-deserved zingers at the national media. Via John Ziegler, we have the key moment in her speech, in which she tells the media to stay away from the children of her successor, and to “quit making things up”:

It’s difficult to recall a time when the national media treated two candidates so differently in an election than in 2008 with Palin and Barack Obama. I’ve seen nothing like it, not when Geraldine Ferraro ran as the first woman on a major-party ticket, not when George W. Bush ran against Al Gore or John Kerry, not even when Ronald Reagan — who the media intensely disliked at the time — ran against Jimmy Carter.  For that story, see John’s site and his documentary, How Obama Got Elected.

As for not making things up, I’d just be happy if we didn’t see her daughter’s ex-boyfriend appearing on talking-head shows ever again, with the shows treating the 19-year-old as though he was an eminence grise on all things Alaska and Palin.  How many teen-age boyfriends become experts on their girlfriends’ families, anyway?

Alllahpundit linked to a mostly fair CBS report in the Headlines on Palin’s speech, which made this good point:

Yes, Palin’s poll numbers have tanked since the heights she achieved after her resounding speech at the Republican National Convention in August of last year. Forty-four percent of Americans viewed her favorably in the CBS News poll taken then, while in the July 12, 2009 CBS News poll, only 26 percent had a favorable view.

But there is another number that should give Palin and her supporters hope that she may yet have a second life in national politics. A whopping thirty-nine percent of those polled in the most recent CBS News survey said that they were undecided or had not heard enough about her.

If a run for president in 2012 is in her future, and don’t be so quick to count her out, she must focus on those 39 percent. After all, her most ardent backers will continue to support her no matter what.

Whether or not the resignation turns out to be a mistake, it’s now done and over. Even if she doesn’t run for office, Palin’s going to be a major force in activist politics, and we’ll see where the road takes her.

At the same time, the Wikipedia summary of her career indicates significant experience with Reagan, so that does give her some conservative bona fides, IMHO.

Yes, very good. Brilliant. What are all those stupid economists studying all day?

Who knows?
Probably small, covert ways to implement Socialism via Keynesian methods.

Why do they go to school and get PhDs in this stuff when it’s just that simple?

So they can become policy wonks who are paid the big bucks by the Federal Government, the World Bank and various “think tanks.”

Man, why hasn’t Joseph Stiglitz figured out what is so blatantly obvious to you? That guy is such an idiot.
Proud Rino on July 27, 2009 at 2:57 PM

I’m curious as to why you picked this guy…described as a “neo-Keynesian.”
Even though your precedent Mr. “I like him” has a bushel-full of economic policy wonks like Stiglitz, Bernanke, Ortiz and Orszag advising him as to what to do to supposedly revive the economy, it continues to lose jobs and the stock market’s tanked down over 3,000 points for a solid 6 months, but Gee! Those guys are smart!

The lesson of all this was, of course, that because we’re a great nation, our challenges seem complex. It will always be this way. But as long as we remember our first principles and believe in ourselves, the future will always be ours. – Ronald Reagan’s Farewell Speech

And now we have this:

And it is our men and women in uniform securing it, and we are facing tough challenges in America with some seeming to just be Hell bent maybe on tearing down our nation, perpetuating some pessimism, and suggesting American apologetics, suggesting perhaps that our best days were yesterdays. – Sarah Palin’s Farewell Speech

Calling Palin’s version “dumbed down” is only your opinion and nothing more.
I have a feeling that President Reagan would love Sarah Palin.

You cite 2 speeches, one given by a President leaving the White House, one given by state governor leaving office but who’s been spotlit by the MSM.
Vastly different occasions, but they’re saying the same things.
Sarah’s saying exactly what Reagan said: America’s best days are ahead of us.
If her language is plainer and less flowery, that’s because 1.) she’s not Reagan she’s Palin and 2.) As you pointed out, there are folks in our country who aren’t that politically smart and need to be fed baby food before they can eat red meat and caviar.

More from Reagan’s Farewell speech:

Finally, there is a great tradition of warnings in Presidential farewells, and I’ve got one that’s been on my mind for some time. But oddly enough, it starts with one of the things I’m proudest of in the past 8 years: the resurgence of national pride that I called the new patriotism. This national feeling is good, but it won’t count for much, and it won’t last unless it’s grounded in thoughtfulness and knowledge.

What the conservative movement needs is thoughtfulneess and knowledge. Palin has not demostrated either.

ddrintn on July 27, 2009 at 4:43 PM

Right. Because a person who cares enough to educate himself can’t be connected with reality. Ivy league means elitist and out of touch. It can never mean smart. It can’t possibly mean hardworking.

Bill Buckley liked to tell a story about one of Taft’s reelection campaigns, when the Senator’s wife was asked at a rally whether her husband was a common man. “Oh no,” she retorted, “he is not that at all. He was first in his class at Yale and first in his class at Harvard Law School. I think it would be wrong to present a common man as a representative of the people of Ohio.” The political professionals blanched, but the crowd gave the Tafts a standing ovation.

Those were the days.

I realize Wikipedia is far from the last word on topics, but as to the point for which I cited it here, it is accurate, as shown, for example, in this link as well.

As for my name, it is inspired by the 1986 Queen hit but in this context also expresses my wish for a unified GOP, or at least one unified force to beat the liberals in 2010 and 2012. I know that is much to wish for at this point, but we can all aspire to great things, can’t we?

OneVision on July 27, 2009 at 4:59 PM

Right. Because a person who cares enough to educate himself can’t be connected with reality.

Educating oneself is not the same thing as becoming a Leftist policy wonk at an Ivy League (graduate) school.

Jenfidel on July 27, 2009 at 5:33 PM

Not all ivy league are like that. My Best Friend went to one.. and will pay for it until she in dead and buried and she knows it.

Does she regret it.. yep. He education didn’t get her anywhere…. even being ivy league.

She is a complete disaster for the party and the conservative movement.

Chekote on July 27, 2009 at 8:55 AM

Dude, the GOP, in it’s current state, is a complete disaster for the party and the conservative movement.

jimmy2shoes on July 27, 2009 at 5:39 PM

Not only recent VP candidates… I have problems thinking of any in the entire 20th century that were treated similarly after losing an election. The Progressive Left and Right are losing its marbles over Gov. Palin… like they were threatened or something.

ajacksonian on July 27, 2009 at 6:03 PM

Is this what the GOP is going to tell the 53% of Americans who view Palin unfavorably? Is this smart politics? Give it a rest. If the woman looked like Donna Shalala she would have been written off a long time ago.

Chekote on July 27, 2009 at 5:23 PM

I’m not “the GOP” dumba$$. I’m asking you what the hell your problem is. Go buy a Palin poster and put it on your dart board if it’ll make you feel better.

Maybe you look like Donna Shalala. Maybe you are Donna Shalala.

darwin on July 27, 2009 at 6:07 PM

Jesus, I’ve heard more vituperative batsh*t about Palin from Lefties who think that they KNOW how Palin will present herself.

They haven’t looked at her 2006 campaign at all. She didn’t run as Elmer Gantry. She ran as a unifier who could get things done for Alaska. If you want to know how she’ll fight Obama, take a look at the 2006 effort. It worked.

victor82 on July 27, 2009 at 6:12 PM

victor82:

It doesn’t matter how Sarah ran in Alaska in 2006. The campaign that Sarah will be projected to run against Obama in 2012 will be a function of the template that Obama and his war room and the MSM come up with in order to give Obama the best chance to succeed.

technopeasant on July 27, 2009 at 6:38 PM

Noticed this on Breitbart. http://www.breitbart.tv/ethicsgate-see-the-video-anti-palin-alaskan-bloggers-fought-to-have-removed-from-youtube/

ProfessorMiao on July 27, 2009 at 6:43 PM

Palin and Obama’s birth certificate are not going to get us the Congress and White House back. Let’s move on besides the reality show type drama of the Palin’s and the crazy birther stuff and stick to the issues. Let people see what these policies are all about and let people see how our side has better solutions and we will win. Palin and birth certificates are not the answer. Read Joe’s book!

arizonateacher on July 27, 2009 at 6:52 PM

arizonateacher on July 27, 2009 at 6:52 PM

Taking the high ground and only talking about issues is not going to work with the lefty smear machine and move on in the mix. We have to fight as dirty as they fight.

FWIW the Fox All Stats were strangely positive.

Same thing. Economics is carried out in the real world, not a lecture hall.

ddrintn on July 27, 2009 at 5:22 PM
Yeah…go read The Wealth of Nations, and when you finish it, talk to me about how you already knew all that before reading it, because economics is carried out in the real world.

Proud Rino on July 27, 2009 at 5:25 PM

In a way, yeah. Smith (unlike Marx and most of Keynes) is grounded in common sense. All orthodox economic thought is anyway is codified common sense. In that regard, I’d take Palin over, say, Paul Krugman.

Probably.

Wizbang:
ChekoteENOUGH! Enough with the excuses. Palin is inarticulate. Her speeches just ramble on incoherently. She is uninformed. She has been peddling the same canned talking points for almost a year now. After the election, she needed to hit the books and learn a couple of things about policy.

I am on the Right, politically. I was a huge fan of Sarah when she first came on the scene. But her lack of knowledge about the issues and her refusal to remedy it, has turned me off. It has nothing to do with being insider, outsider, Trig, her looks or any of the lame excuses her supporters put out.”

TimeTraveler on July 27, 2009 at 7:02 PM

..You know, the blather goes back and forth from the trolls but someone must be quaking in their boots because Sara Palin gins up a lot of attention.

Almost 600 responses to this post today and the others on Hot Air are what, 50 to 200?

I frankly do not think she will run — at least until she gets her sea legs — but she is going to draw some huge crowds at rallies and speeches for the right much to the dismay of the cynical, sarcastic, poisonous left. And the more they bitch and the more that their fading golden by tanks, the bigger the crowds will be come.

I’m loving it!

Here is my favorite Chekote post from RedState:

” I am sticking with Giuliani by Chekote

Giuliani is the only candidate who will be competitive in states like New Jersey and PA. The GOP needs to break out of this Southern-Plains electoral box it has built for itself by pandering to the evangelicals. It is great to have religious people involved in party politics but they need to check their religious book at the door.

As far as Romney being the only candidate to keep the old Reagan coalition together, did it ever occur to you that it may be time to put together another coalition? Reagan is dead and has been out of office for 20 years. We need to capture the growing investor class. Giuliani is the man to do it. Romney could also have been the man to do it but he decided to pander to the evangelicals in Iowa.”

You are exposed Chekote.

portlandon on July 27, 2009 at 7:10 PM

For some, going to school is the only thing they can do since no one will hire them for their talent. Then justify all that time in class as meaning of intelligence.
Get a BS, can’t find a job or don’t look, get a MS, can’t find a job or don’t look, get a PhD, can’t find a job or don’t look, run for Senate. Some just have to be a comedian to get votes. Now that’s funny.

lasertex on July 27, 2009 at 7:15 PM

When I lived in NYC, Giuliani was constantly sued by the ACLU. The man never backed down. As matter of fact, everytime a new suit was threatened his response was “Get in line”. If all it takes for you to tuck your tail between your legs is frivolous lawsuits, you ain’t ready for prime time.

SOCIALISM BAD CAPITALISM GOOD. Brilliant stuff, friend. That’s really all it comes down to. I can’t believe I’ve studied economics this long and never realized it was so easy! Why did I waste my time reading all those books and taking all those classes?

Anyway, you geniuses are fun but it’s time to get back to work.

I am glad that I was on this thread to read your comment. You’re not a proud rino at all. Let’s just say that you’re a proud dino at best or an Obot unicorn disguised as a proud rino. The horn on your nose won’t fool us anymore. No go back to Dkos or David Frum’s blog where you belong.

Americannodash on July 27, 2009 at 2:13 PM

To be fair, if ProudRino is a registered Republican, this is indeed an example of a RINO, and it is certainly proud of it’s views and voting.

As is shown in this secquence: here, here and here.

Unless of course, ProudRino is just a lying troll rolling through this thread at full steam after AnninCA got scared away. (HornetSting did that, I think. Good job!)

You don’t have to use too many facts and real-life examples, mind. I’ve learned that’s very hard for RINO’s and liberals to do.

I’ve read all the above (well, portions of Marx), and I stand by it, as long as “common sense” includes such things as observation and reasoning. But then, I’m sure we don’t all breathe the same intellectual rarefied air that you do. *sigh*

Stick to what YOU know. Common sense isn’t your forte anyway.
