Video: Conyers scoffs at doing his job

posted at 11:36 am on July 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

John Conyers must have thought he provided the ultimate beat-down to people who strangely insist that lawmakers should actually read legislation before it passes. Unfortunately for Conyers, all he did was prove that (a) he’s been in Congress far too long, and (b) Democratic leadership and the White House are rushing legislation when everyone should take their time to understand it. CNS’ Nicholas Ballasy reports:

During his speech at a National Press Club luncheon, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Democratic Congressman John Conyers (D-Mich.), questioned the point of lawmakers reading the health care bill.

“I love these members, they get up and say, ‘Read the bill,’” said Conyers.

“What good is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you don’t have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?”

Of course, the answer to that is — what’s the freaking rush? Why not take two days and a couple of lawyers from your staff to figure out what’s in the bill before you pass it into law, Rep. Conyers? Representative democracy rests on having the people send Congressmen and Senators to Washington DC to vote on legislation so that we don’t have to hold constant national referendums on issues. If the elected representatives don’t bother to read the legislation, then we have surrendered representative democracy and adopted an autocracy of Capitol Hill staffers and lobbyists.

It may be difficult to find anyone as clueless as John Conyers in this clip. In fact, one has to go back 30 years and enter the world of comedy to come close to it. Behold one of the greatest moments in sitcom history, teaching a lesson that Conyers and his colleagues should well heed: Slow down.

It may be difficult to find anyone as clueless as John Conyers in this clip.

Conyers has to be clueless. It is his primary defense mechanism. Let’s remember that the bastard’s wife just pled guilty on corruption charges. Supposedly Conyers knew nothing about it. So, it would be telling if he were to appear competent in this clip.

I seriously hope there is at least one person within the GOP that is smart enough to jump on all of this crap. Surely someone is clever enough to piece together a hard-hitting video. All I ever receive from the RNC are emails begging for money. It’s tiring.

Here’s a novel concept. Don’t make the bill 1000 pages long and take more than 2 days before voting on it!!!

We’re talking trillions of dollars and 1/6 of our economy here and all Conyers can muster up is that he doesn’t have the patience to read the bill?

I’m not sure Conyers has the mental ability to actually READ the bill, or the time either, since he’s continually buried with his lawyers trying to avoid ethics complaints and tax problems. A complete idiot, Conyers is the poster child for diversity in Congress. Add him to the list with Maxine Waters, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, et al, and you see why the country is where it is today. Idiots like this in Congress.

How about we have mandatory “counseling” of congressmen every so often, in which they are encouraged to embrace “end of life”, and increase it in frequency the longer they’ve been in?

If it’s good enough for grandma, it’s good enough for congress.

What I can’t stand is these arrogant asses forget that they work for US, not themselves. The democrats quit paying lip service to that decades ago, unfortunately the republicans started doing it too (see amnesty) which got them voted out.

All they have to do is to broadcast what Democrats say, since the media won’t do it.

And they demonstrate it every day.

Yeah but their football team sucks.

Seriously, the Constitution was founded on the framework of a polarized nation. Back then it was Northern interests v. Southern interests but it has stood us in good stead with having a document that allows for the rule of law. Getting rid of the Electoral College as most of the left wants since popular voting would favor the nests of liberalism in places like SF, LA, and NYC, would disenfranchise anybody who doesn’t live in a major media market. Just another check on rampant liberalism and the idiots who lead the movement.

When Jim Himes (D-CT) passed the second bill he had not read, I wrote to him and asked how he purported to represent his constituents when he passed TWO enormous, complex bills that are sure to have a PROFOUND impact for years to come, when he could not possibly have read them, let alone understood or debated them. I have yet to receive an answer.

It’s time to recall our so-called “representatives” when they are obviously not even pretending to do their jobs! They certainly were NOT sent to Washington to pass, sight unseen and text unread, bills of such magnitude simply because the President is in a hurry to cram his agenda through before Americans even know what hit them!
