Peterson: I don’t talk to my constituents because they’re nuts

posted at 4:45 pm on July 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The Minnesota GOP took notice of an odd statement from Rep. Collin Peterson (D-MN) in a Politico piece on the Birthers.  They want Peterson to apologize for calling a quarter of his constituents Truthers and claiming that he can’t hold town-hall meetings in person with the other seventy-five percent:

Out-party politicians have long had to deal with conspiracy theorists on their side — the people who think that the Clintons killed Vince Foster or that the Bush administration helped orchestrate the Sept. 11 attacks.

“Twenty-five percent of my people believe the Pentagon and Rumsfeld were responsible for taking the twin towers down,” said Rep. Collin Peterson, a Democrat who represents a conservative Republican district in Minnesota. “That’s why I don’t do town meetings.”

Somehow I doubt that a full quarter of Peterson’s constituents are Truthers, or even ten percent.  However, what if they were?  Doesn’t Peterson have some responsibility to talk to his constituents to dispel those paranoid conspiracy theories?  More to the point, Peterson should be answerable to his constituents, but I suspect that his reluctance to face them now has more to do with Peterson’s support of Obama’s agenda on cap-and-trade than it does with him being frightened away by conspiracy theorists.

Either way, it’s hardly a profile in courage.  Tony Sutton, the new GOP chair in Minnesota, wants an apology, and draws the same conclusion:

Collin Peterson must immediately apologize for the outrageous and offensive comments he made about his own constituents.  By stating that ‘twenty-five percent of my people believe the Pentagon and Rumsfeld were responsible for taking the twin towers down’ and that’s ‘why I don’t do town meetings,’ Peterson revealed just how out of touch and disconnected he has become in Washington.  Given his liberal voting record, the real reason Peterson doesn’t hold town hall meetings is because he is afraid to face the residents of his district.

On the overall Birther issue, it’s becoming a problem for Republicans.  We have people like Chris Matthews helping to fuel it, not because Matthews has objective journalistic instincts, but because he knows he can make all Republicans look like loons — and encourage more Birthers to get vocal.  Just when we need all the credibility we can muster to fight against ObamaCare and cap-and-tax, it’s getting sapped by the conspiracy theorists.

Let’s focus on the fights where the evidence supports our position.

If a “birther” or two can lead a Dem member of Congress to make outrageous self-confessions, such as Paterson’s…then maybe they have served a good purpose — To expose the elitist mindset of the liberals…too good to soil their hands mingling with the people.

Dems, that is not a smart way to garner votes.

But, don’t stop on my account.

More trickery by the media, they allow birthers to be the face of Republicans but truthers were just a fringe group. I hate when people try to make others shut up and I won’t be defined by anyone else.

Cindy Munford on July 27, 2009 at 4:52 PM

More to the point, Peterson should be answerable to his constituents…

9/11 truthers did not derail the Dems and people wanting to see a long form BC will not derail REP. All Rep should stand up for free speach and say they just disagree with the issue and move on. WE ARE SO GOOD AT MAKING FUN OF, PUSHING ASIDE, WHAT EVER OUR OWN PARTY. Allah and Ed, you do not agree with the issue, so drop it. The more of a fuss some on our side the more of a fuss it becomes.

WOW pinning this on ALL Republicans is yet another shameful spin by the shameless media. They will do ANYTHING to create a diversion from Obama’s sinking popularity, evaporating credibility, and failing policy. It’s futile. America is beginning to realize what a liar Obama is. The clock is ticking and time is against the Chris Matthews of the world. They are flipping and spinning and flailing, and I love it. Squirm, you dishonest worms – squirm.

It seemed to me that he was saying a quarter of Democrats were Truthers. Bound to get him in trouble with a whole different constituency, but worth a clarification.

It’d be funny if he ended up pissing off both Democrats and Republicans, since redistricting time is coming up and MN is on the bubble when it comes to retaining its seats. Wonder how hard it would be for a bipartisan panel to draw out MN-07.

Pretty soon, because we have been so downright mean to people who are just trying to help by making our decisions for us, politicians will just stop telling us about everything that they’ve decided we’re too inept to do ourselves.

And that day cannot come soon enough for the Democrats.

One Against Many on July 27, 2009 at 4:58 PM

Ed, sometimes your posts are Surprisingly Good®. Other times, ehhh.

The birthers exist in a vacuum, created by Obama himself. You and he can bitch about them you want, but he won’t put them away with evidence. I think he likes the ethereal mist it creates, making him seem supernatural.

As for your dismissal of the birther movement, let’s see who ends up the real loser on this.

Undoubtedly.

I find this line of argument absurd. If people believed their own arguments they would only post threads on one burning topic. Which, of course, they do not. We live in a 24 hr news cycle now too. There is more space for more stories then ever before. This distraction meme is pathetic – which is why Obama should be mocked for it – not adopted by the right.

On the overall Birther issue, it’s becoming a problem for Republicans.

No it’s not – and if it is it’s only because people, like you Ed – insist we move every one of our political voices (like Sarah Palin) who attempts to attack the media off the field of battle once they’ve been “hacked” by the MSM.

When will you learn that we need to ATTACK the media ED? Why do consistently lament that we have to play their game and move in a different direction once they start attacking us? Do you really think we can defeat the MSM – which controls all main stream media outlets without getting down in the dirt and playing their game?

The truthers – yes … well they give us an opportunity to highlight the fact that the left has their own whackos. When have you heard Obama or Gibbs or Astroturf denounce or try to silence Michael Moore? Where were the liberal voices that pointed out that the “W” movie was a hack job?

Come on Ed – the truthers are not the problem. The problem is … you’re still playing crochete while the other side is enganged in full-contact Kung Fu.

Contrary to the claims that some have made, passage of the Clean Energy Act will not increase taxes or or cause job losses. Electricity rates will be kept affordable, and the use of coal, our nations most abundant energy resourse, will continue to grow.

Now of course that’s only part of it, but needless to say my blood started to boil. I called one of his offices and told them to never ever send me something in the mail again. Ever. So hopefully no more smarmy smart mouth letters to me. I have to admit I’m still a little heated.

Just get enough like minded people to deliver a bucket of tar, a bag of feathers and a railroad tie each day to each of their offices while they are home on the break. Who needs a town hall meeting. After all a picture is worth a thousand words.

Ed,
I really don’t see any problem with demanding to see the original, especially since he couldn’t get a drivers liscence in Hawaii with a COLB issued by the state!

And as far as motivation for the Dunham’s swearing to the affadavit, the one you make it sounds as though it woulod be a strange, rather “cosmopolitan”, and forward thinking thing to do in the early 60′s..?

Just imagine for a second that they realized Barry O Sr. was playing their daughter for a chump, and regardless of Stanley Ann’s zeal to be sooooooo “open minded” and “international” (after all, “Barack Obama’s mother wasn’t just a girl from Kansas“), was able to be convinced that it was in little Barry’s interest in the distant future to have a US citizenship…

Done deal; or as you say, easy peasy…

I know you think that the “birthers” make the GOP look like raving lunatics. But as others have noted, there is a lot of background information that Obama won’t release. Indeeed, he’s the first modern President, at least of the late 20th century, to have the luxury of not having to show any of the paper trail from his either his personal, academic, and legislative history…

Is that affirmative action or what?

Well Paterson sugar, if I lived in MN and I had a vote, you would be toast! BTW, so would be dear al. acorn saw to it you and al were elected. Come on MN, wake up.
Ed, I am so sorry you and all here live in MN to put up with this. I have a feeling MANY more states will be going to have to deal with this. Our bho will see to it he will ‘do no wrong’.

This why ever DAMM one of these washington elites both parties should be thrown out of office .These jerks need to remember who the hell they work for.The founders are rolling in there grave.Revolution is coming we will take our country back.

By his own admission the “0” was a dual citizen at birth…
Born in Hawaii? Maybe …probably …
Dual citizenship automatically disqualifies …
How it got this far is unexplainable…
Natural Born status is from TWO parents with US citizenship…
What is happening now is exactly what the Founding Fathers feared.
That is why they referred to Natural Law to establish Natural Born…look it up…
The offspring gets it’s Name and citizenship from the Father…This is not rocket science…
So anybody who mocks so called birther’s is disingenuous at best…
