Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on July 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Jim Hoft of Gateway Pundit finds today’s OOTD, involving a national leader revered by his followers and seemingly infallible and omnipresent.  No, not Barack Obama, but Emperor Hirohito, who apparantly snuck onto the USS Missouri to sign the instrument of unconditional surrender 64 years ago.  Who knew Hirohito could swim?

“I’m always worried about using the word ‘victory,’ because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur,” Obama told ABC News.

For those “students of history” who know next to nothing about it, the US did not force Hirohito to sign the surrender personally.  Hirohito sent his foreign minister and a general.  But Obama’s point is ignorant anyway.  A war doesn’t need a flashy surrender to end in victory, and even those victories don’t necessarily mean the end of all fighting, either.  We had a flashy surrender in Germany, too, and Nazi irregulars continued creating havoc for the better part of two years during the occupation.

A real student of history would know that. For that matter, so did Obama’s rival for the White House, and for good reason.  Unfortunately, Obama seems to be more like this student of history:

Addendum: Normally I’d put a link to Chris Muir’s Day by Day site here, but today I want to do more than that. Chris has a fundraising drive to keep his excellent cartoon alive.  Be sure to drop a few dollars in his collection to keep one of the Rightosphere’s most talented warriors in the fight!

Sure seems that way.

Shy Guy on July 27, 2009 at 8:11 AM

It’s more than just a simple error. The whole question of how to handle the Emperor’s divinity was a tricky political one at the time. In fact, the decision to force Hirohito to make a radio broadcast saying that the nation had surrendered and lost the war was monumental. Japanese had ever heard the Emperors voice before–didn’t even know if a divine being such as he would have a regular voice. Even the decision to keep the Emperor was a complicated political one. No one who knows anything about Japan’s WWII past would make that stupid mistake to say the Emperor personally came and signed a surrender.

JiangxiDad on July 27, 2009 at 8:11 AM

We had a flashy surrender in Germany, too, and Nazi irregulars continued creating havoc for the better part of two years during the occupation.

For that matter, and for real students of history, WWI ended in a very elaborate surrender and all it did was pause hostilities for a generation.

It is shameful that the TOTUS doesn’t have a better grasp of history.

Besides, victory for Barry will be when we all surrender our bank-accounts!

I think what you mean to say is that victory for the filthy liar will occur when we stop thinking of it as “our” money. He’s long ago decided that only he and his henchmen are deserving of spending it, all that remains is getting the public to understand that we are not in charge of wealth redistribution.

I think some Sam Cooke songs showed up in Animal House too:

Don’t know much about history
Don’t know much biology
Don’t know much about a science book
Don’t know much about the french I took

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

But seriously, one of the reasons the Japanese surrender was made a big show is because it was a little ambiguous. The emperor wasn’t signing it, and wasn’t thrown in jail. the surrender wasn’t really unconditional.

The German surrender just had I think Doenitz, Keitel and Jodl huddled around a table, in occupied Germany, in some dark room signing some papers, and then they were tossed in jail and put on trial.

Good article. So, when someone is the product of Affirmative Action, we’re supposed to lower our expectations and excuse them when they make up fairy tales and spout nonsense?

Yeah, I know. Somebody above said something like “how would we recognize each other?” Easy. Look for the least likely person to be leaving their home to attend a march in Wash DC and you’ve found your group. It’s who will be marching, as much as how many, that I think will reverberate like cannon shot on Capitol Hill and in the WH. If you wake America up, you better be careful.

When will the Chicago Jesus come out and agree with the chick from Santa Cruz that we still have slaves on the East Coast of the US.

As soon as FLOTUS plants a “vegetable tree” in the White House garden.

If it’s large enough, and if there are others across the country as well, I suspect it will scare the pols to death.

JiangxiDad on July 27, 2009 at 9:16 AM

But it has to be a two step process. The million teabag march on DC and then, many many teaparties around the country on the same day. Congress adjourns October 31st so my suggestion would be the first weekend in November or perhaps Veteran’s day. Regardless, these events need to be coordinated because otherwise the media just passes them off as a bunch of right-wing nutjob racists who aren’t giving the filthy liar in the White House a chance to lead.

and don’t forget, Soto’s also “brilliant,” and Michell Obama is “brilliant.” Their theses sucked, but hey, they’re brilliant.

Reminds me of the Florida recount in 2000. A bunch of Republicans demanded the recount process be done more openly and showed up at the courthouse to protest. While the reporters were talking about Bush supporters “taking over the building” the video was showing people pulling strollers out of the back of their minivans.

This is one of the BEST things you guys do on a daily basis. It gives me no end of delight to come to this site after having heard how wonderful this dolt is day in and day out (I pray to God, seriously, I really REALLY do, that my home state of New Mexico pulls its collective head out of its misguided behind soon before I lost my mind.).

While I’m often angered and sometimes enraged by this man’s idiocy, these daily tidbits give me a chance for at least a wry laugh or two. The only sad thing about it is, there are just so many of these for you guys to choose from. Wasn’t this guy supposed to be the smartest feller EVER elected to the office?

Every time I see him screw up I hear Morgan Freeman talking in my head, the line from one of the best Stephen King (himself a lib nutball) stories ever made into a movie: “Hope is a dangerous thing …” Yes, Mr. Freeman. It sure ’nuff is. Especially when it’s combined with ignorance and a cross-the-board, no brains-involved call for “change.”

Every left wing media darling is brilliant and they all prove it by brilliantly parroting every single tired liberal cliche from memory.

None of these people have ever had an original thought in their lives. It is astounding what utter fools we have in the top levels of government.

At the website for the march, the sponsors are indicated. Maybe u can email them and let them know what u think about coordinating this stuff. I’m really hoping the march in DC is HUGE–”the shot heard round the world” huge.

btw, I think a tie-in with the whole ‘states’ sovereignty” issue is logical. On Drudge today, there’s a story about Nebraska being just the latest state to tell the Feds to shove it. Something is brewing, and the red state governors are vital to it I think.

THIS GUY NEVER SHUTS UP! HE IS ON CNBC RIGHT NOW GIVING ANOTHER GRANDIOSE, DIARRHEA-OF-THE-MOUTH SPEECH!

I thought he was going on vacation to lick his wounds & stroke his ego in a $40,000 farm house of Ted Kennedy’s & John Kerry’s wife?

Please go, already.

True, but don’t forget the utter fools who put and keep them there. Seems we’re fools all the way down…

JiangxiDad on July 27, 2009 at 9:47 AM

I thought he was going on vacation

Last week of August, I think. Also, I hope he’s on
TV every day. Makes more and more people sick of him .

My parents are >60 and they are getting involved for the first time in their lives. People are learning that elections do have consequences. We should figure out some way to meet up. Some place at a certain time, we could all introduce ourselves then. I know HoustonRight is bringing a convoy in, their should be a lot of HotAir people running about town.
