New Dem strategy on ObamaCare: Ignore the evidence and just trust us!

posted at 10:11 am on July 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

After taking shots to the political solar plexus from the CBO on the costs of their health-care reform package, House Democrats have decided to drop the pretense of saving money through ObamaCare.  Instead, The Hill reports that Democrats will argue that the new health-care system will be so good, that it will be worth spending a lot more money on it, and the savings will magically appear from …. somewhere.  Since the entire raison d’etre of ObamaCare is that medical costs are bankrupting America, this smells like desperation:

Following a blow from the Congressional Budget Office, Democratic leaders in Congress likely will make the case this week that the healthcare reform plan has multiple benefits and cost savings that cannot be scored by independent congressional accountants.

Democrats are going to seek to convince skeptics that the healthcare overhaul has other provisions, such as prevention and wellness measures, that will provide benefits and save money, a House leadership aide told The Hill on Sunday. …

“At CBO, they are accountants, but we still have to make our case,” the leadership aide said. “They are doing their thing and we are doing ours.”

“What people seem to forget is that we are making progress [with legislation], but that the [Energy and Commerce] committee is still talking and that the legislation is not finalized,” the aide said. Lawmakers are continuing to look at “other measures to save money or to slow the rate of growth — all of those things are under discussion,” the aide added.

Call it faith-based economics.  Just forget all of those people who make a living at looking at balance sheets, cost projections, and legislative analysis — trust us!  For a party that screeched about returning science to its “rightful place” in policymaking, they seem highly enamored of tarot cards and entrail-reading when it comes to their own fiscal policies.

The Obama administration and the Democrats have yet to learn that one cannot spend their way back into solvency.  We already have government programs for medical care that don’t work.  If Congress wants to overhaul Medicare/Medicaid to make it financially viable, the VA to make it responsive, and Indian Health Service to make it do anything for its consumers, that would be enough for any Congress to do.  Otherwise, we don’t need the Church of Democratic Spending asking us to ignore the evidence of massive irresponsibility and ask us to believe that they can perform some kind of transubstantiation to make it into cost savings for the American taxpayer.

Update: Gary Gross discusses the difference between cost and price, as I have done repeatedly.  This point needs constant attention.

Church of Democratic Spending

Good one. The argument from liberal friends and co-workers goes like this: ‘Healthcare will bankrupt our country, we must fix it, doing something, anything, is better than nothing, let’s just do what Obama says.’

It is amazingly similar to their support for cap-and-trade: ‘Global warming will destroy the world. We have to do something, anything. Even if the climate models aren’t true, it would be better to do something just in case. Let’s do what Obama says.’

The take home message is, they don’t really want to think for themselves, and they don’t want you to think for yourself either. Thet all just want to hold hands, chant “Yes We Can” and do what Obama says.

The only up side to it all, is that when it comes time to take back the country (at the ballot box, of course) they won’t put up much resistance.

I spent about 3 hrs calling all the Blue Dog Dems last Fri. Most of the phone clerks didn’t bother to ask where I lived, in fact only 2 clerks hung up on me when I told them I lived in Ga. I assume the others took down my complaints.

Everyone still needs to get on the phones and DEMAND that the govt stay out of our health care. Don’t just call your rep and leave it at that – call as many as you can.

As a cancer survivor I know how hard it is to deal with ins. companies, hospital bills, etc. It would be impossible if the govt were to get involved. My main concern is medical care not being available when needed. I didn’t even think about the cost when I called. The Govt has to HEAR your complaint and understand that this is AMERICA and they will not get between you and your doctor.

Now – the cost plus my privacy being invaded has me really pissed…

Minimizing government, and allowing private enterprises to fill most of the economic niches in a society was part of the genius of the American experiment.

That’s the hypocracy of the ‘right now’ rhetoric. The ‘benefits’ of this bill doesn’t even go into effect until 2013. So all the people dying NOW because they can’t find a hospital, or they can’t sign up for an already existing FREE govn’t healtcare program, or they choose to spend their money on cigs/booze, or they’re illegal and don’t want ot come out of the shadows, they’re out of luck for the next 4 years anyway.

This bill is the ultimate inside the beltway power grab. Force it down our throats now – put off the deficit impact for years down the road, and then blame everyone else when this nightmare takes effect.

From Hillary and Tim’mah’s piece in the journal today:

Raising personal incomes and strengthening the social safety net to address the reasons why Chinese feel compelled to save so much would provide a powerful boost to Chinese domestic demand and global growth.

The US Government telling China they are not socialist enough and thet their citizens are being irresponsible for saving for their senior years.

The Dems can’t be happy that the role of the CBO is to Check Barack Obama. But if they are going to argue that the CBO incapable of doing what it is chartered to do, then why do we have a CBO? $40 million a year is a lot of money to spend on accountants whose work is just going to be dismissed anyway.

Lawmakers are continuing to look at “other measures to save money or to slow the rate of growth — all of those things are under discussion,” the aide added.

I expect this to become the main selling point shortly. The demokrats have to realize the lie of cost savings with this legislation is unraveling at an alarming rate. So I predict a shift in strategy kind of like the sports cliche, “you can’t stop it, you can only hope to contain it.”

anglee99 on July 27, 2009 at 10:32 AM

All they really need to do is change some rules for the health insurance industry and do some tort reform for frivolous lawsuits.

If the government made the insurance companies lighten up on their screening and pushed for much bigger and broader pools of people, many of the nightmares for pre-existing conditions would be solved. Its individuals or small businesses with few people that are screwed because the applicants basically have to stand on their own with no cover of thousands of others.

When a big company offers health insurance, the insurance company takes everyone. With individuals, the insurance company can pick and choose.

Yes that big company gets it’s “costs and track record” reviewed by the insurance companies, and overall policy cost changes can be reflected. But the large pool of employees has a mitigating effect that insulates individuals with health problems.

I understand you must have multiple pools to keep multiple insurance companies, but larger pools can be achieved with almost no taxpayer costs.

Also, free health care for illegals should precipitate deportation. If an illegal shows up at an emergency room with no means to pay, fix him up ands send him home where he belongs. It is stupid to reward unwanted behavior.

Illegals don’t have to “come out of the shadows” to get free healthcare in the U.S. There is a federal law that expressly prohibits hospitals from asking about the immigration status of anyone coming into an E.R. seeking care. (It’s in the same law that requires hospital E.R.’s to treat all who come in seeking care, regardless of ability to pay).

http://www.vedicwisdom.com/voodoo.html

We just replaced “possible Black Magic or Spirit Activity” with ObamaCare
and it seems to fit perfectly

Initial stages of ObamaCare:

Your sleep is disturbed
Fatigue and lack of energy to live day-to-day life
You have Fear
Disinterest in life
Hopelessness
You are irritated for no reason
You get angry for no reason
Severe Depression
Dryness of mouth at night
increased thirst
Obesity in some cases
Sudden Chills and Goose Bumps
Tightness around body parts
You start forgetting things in the spur of the moment and experience memory loss
Your access to the dream world is blocked: No remembrance of dreams when you wake up
Your professional career suffers
Irrational behaviour of people towards you.
Blockages in the inflow of money

Advance Stages of ObamaCare:

You dream of dead bodies and horrible looking people who want to kill you in your dream
You dream of snakes & dirty places
Waking up suddenly in fear with shortness of breath
Dreaming of falling from Heights
Dreaming of Snakes, Scorpions & Spiders
You see black dots or smoke flying all over
The stomach bloats like a pregnant women’s belly and the area right above the navel tightens up & when touched feels like a golf ball is in there
Tightness and heaviness specially in shoulders and chest
Extreme hunger in case entities have taken charge of your body
Constant headache
Your complexion darkens
A Dark or Grey smoke is seen in front of the eyes when awake.
Itching, burning and stinging pains in different parts of the body
In case serious ObamaCare is being done to kill you, You will notice that Crows will cross your path from left to right while travelling or they would crossover from left to right, flying right above you, at times they would have a piece of flesh or some other solid matter in their beaks.

Final Stages of ObamaCare with very little recovery time left

Cancer of blood or other body parts
Shrinking and malfunctioning of kidneys
Excessive alcohol consumption resulting in liver damage
Substance Abuse
Heart Attacks resulting in sudden death
Medicines do not work baffling the medical practioner: resulting in doctors using stronger treatments
Suicidal attempts or thoughts of self destruction

Also some symptoms that Obama voters may be experiencing:

Waking up with a jerk and in fear within moments one falls into the first stage of sleep.

A Dark or Grey smoke is seen in front of the eyes when awake.

One’s complexion turns dark & as the time passes it turns to darker shades of black.

Stinging pains in different parts of the body.

Shooting stinging pain in the tongue and one wakes up with extreme pain with a blister on the tongue.

Burning of palms as if they have been put on fire.

Lips and other body parts get swollen in the spur of the moment for no medical reasons.

Constant Fatigue/ Low Energy

Mood Swings & extremely negative thinking that can lead to suicides.

Jerking/Twitching of muscles or body parts.

Feeling of ants crawling on the body or body parts vibrate.

Heaviness/Tightness in the whole body or certain body parts.

In serious cases where Obama has taken control of the house where the individual is residing: one can experience dripping plasma from the walls, unusual activity of the insects & other wierd phenomenon that is unexplainable & unrealistic.
Some of the unusual activity is only visible to the Obama voter.

The effects of ObamaCare are intensified on and around April 15th of every year.

Dear Gaia…Americans won’t be able to get a Starbucks or attend an interpretive dance session for two whole days?

Bishop on July 27, 2009 at 10:46 AM

Tis true, the services they offer may not be missed by the rest of us, but it bothers me that they would be doing a national strike, when we seem to be too chicken/pu**y to do it. The right doing such a thing would literally shut down America. And for the life of me, I don’t understand why the doctors don’t go on strike. Are people really going to give up with just a whimper?

I disagree. It would show that they’re more organized and unified, and have bigger balls.

JiangxiDad on July 27, 2009 at 10:51 AM

I particularly enjoyed the part of interview with Pelosi this morning where she said (with a bit of spluttering) that this horrible bill will act as a stimulus for the economy.
I always love that tactic; put a concept word next to whatever lump of sh*t you’re trying to prop up and hope that it sticks..kind of like when moderates used the word ‘conservative’ to try to describe John McCain.
She went on to say the Crap and trade bill will act as a stimulus by creating green jobs.
I listen to this stuff and I start to understand why people got tarred and feathered back in the day. These guys are worse than snake oil salesman. But, hey, what do I know? Lindsey Graham says we can’t simply be against everything the Democrats put up..otherwise we’d get nothing done. Bend over America, and let’s all take one for Capitalism through excessive taxation.

austinnelly on July 27, 2009 at 10:51 AM

LMAO . . . faith-based economics! I loves it!

Obama and his spend-happy ilk in Congress remind me of all of those 18-year-old college freshmen who, having been lured in by all the shiny, fun credit card kiosks on campuses across the nation, are now the proud owners of their very first Visa cards and are recklessly running around charging beer kegs and new clothes and trips to Cancun without even a thought of how they’re going to pay the bill when it arrives in the mail.

NoLeftTurn on July 27, 2009 at 10:51 AM

Instead, The Hill reports that Democrats will argue that the new health-care system will be so good, that it will be worth spending a lot more money on it, and the savings will magically appear from …. somewhere.

Oy. What could go wrong? HEIL, NO, Herr Obama.

And honestly, would anyone argue that Pelosi is NOT Public Enemy #1?

BuckeyeSam on July 27, 2009 at 10:52 AM

JiangxiDad on July 27, 2009 at 10:51 AM

True, but I still stand by the productivity statement.

Remember the Stimulus Bill? Remember Cap and Trade? TRUST US on health care reform! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

GarandFan on July 27, 2009 at 10:53 AM

And the walls come tumbling down.

No sane politician would vote for this unless the enaction date was right after an election cycle and they planned on only serving one more term.

HoustonRight on July 27, 2009 at 10:17 AM

Precisely why we don’t need to impose term limits! We already have the power to limit their terms. Let’s cap-n-trade Congress in 2010.

Maybe because we are more honorable? The day may come when the Galt’s conduct a real strike, but right now I think it comes down to honor and believing that such conduct is antithetical to what we believe.

Bishop on July 27, 2009 at 10:55 AM

These Democrats are so incredibly out of touch.

They have fawning staffers and our kneepad media, continually telling them how wonderful they are.

When the majority of the country sees them for exactly what they are – incompetent, corrupt hacks.

Nancy Pelosi doesn’t possess the smarts necessary to keep houseplants watered, much less overhaul health care. She has so much botox floating around her bloodstream that she can barely remain conscious throughout the day.

NoDonkey on July 27, 2009 at 10:56 AM

Money line (pun intended):

Democrats, including Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Ways and Means health subcommittee chairman Pete Stark (D-Calif.), do not support allowing a panel outside of the legislative branch to cede its power to set or adjust Medicare reimbursement rates.

They will starve the health care providers.

a capella on July 27, 2009 at 10:58 AM

One,if you already have healthcare that you are satisfied with, what is so good about it?

Two, are they still claiming our taxes won’t be raised to pay or it? And, note: Any scheme where they snatch more cash from you, whether they call it a tax increase or not, is a tax increase.

LimeyGeek on July 27, 2009 at 10:59 AM

“At CBO, they are accountants, but we still have to make our case,” the leadership aide said. “They are doing their thing and we are doing ours.”

After Obama bashes cops, now Congressional Democrat leadership (not all Democrats, fortunately) blasts “accountants”, who can’t count as well as the President of the 57 United States.

Regardless of their training or experience, nobody (cops, accountants, doctors) knows what they’re doing except the O. Judgment to Lead. Yes We Can. (O-bot channeling off)

Ed, those last two paragraphs were awesome! But what will the sheeple read? “Legislative analysis, massive irresponsibility”–so many big words, what dat mean?

Steve Z on July 27, 2009 at 10:59 AM

I’m not worried.
Minimum wage went up last week.
Get girded for a new round of economic tankage. This is ’0′s economy now…
