Rasmussen: Obama strong disapproval rises; Update: Zogby shows Obama at 48%
posted at 9:50 am on July 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Rasmussen has its first tracking poll taken with numbers entirely generated from after Barack Obama’s trainwreck press conference, and to no one’s surprise, his numbers have continued to decline. While his overall job approval remained constant at 49%, those who strongly disapprove of Obama’s performance increased again to 40%, while those who strongly approve retreated to 29%. The strongly-disapprove number has increased five points since the press conference, and the illusion of moderate, post-partisan leadership has been stripped:
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows that 29% of the nation’s voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -11. That’s the first time his ratings have reached double digits in negative territory …
These updates are based upon nightly telephone interviews and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. Today is the first update based entirely upon interviews conducted after the President’s prime time televised press conference. The number who Strongly Approve of the President has remained unchanged since the press conference but the number who Strongly Disapprove has gone up by five percentage points (from 35% on Wednesday morning to 40% today). …
The President is now seen as politically liberal by 76%. That’s up six points from a month ago, 11 points since he was elected, and the highest total to date. Forty-eight percent (48%) now see him as Very Liberal, up 20 points since he was elected.
Tax-and-spend programs will do that. Ever since Barack Obama arrived in Washington, he’s gone on a Blame America tour abroad and spent money (or at least tried to spend money) at an astonishing rate not seen in decades. America has awoken to the fact that they elected a radical, not a moderate, which they might have known had the media done its job on Barack Obama’s political track record in and out of office, as David Freddoso did in his book The Case Against Barack Obama.
Obama also got hammered on his response to the arrest of Henry Gates. In polling taken on Friday and Saturday, after the White House has started its retreat on Obama’s assertion that the police “acted stupidly,” only 26% believed that Obama’s answer was “good” or “excellent”. Sixty-three percent rated it “fair” or poor”, as did 40% of Democrats and 67% of independents. Black voters supported Obama 71%-28%, but they voted for Obama in the last election 96%-4%, which indicates ambivalence even in this demographic (only 21% rated it “excellent”). Obama lost a plurality of the youngest voters, 49%-45%, but lost all others by large majorities ranging from 60%-73%.
But was it right to ask the question in the first place? Lynn Sweet gets second-guessed by a narrow plurality overall, 43%-41%, and most interestingly, by a majority of black voters, 58%-28%.
I doubt we’ll see any prime-time press conferences for a while. I also think it may be a while before Lynn Sweet gets to ask a question at any Obama press briefing.
Update: I meant to include the latest Zogby polling, released on Friday. Downside: It’s Zogby. Upside … well, it’s Zogby:
A new Zogby Interactive survey shows a slight decline in President Barack Obama’s job approval, with 48% of likely voters now approving of the job he is doing as president, down from 51% who said the same in an interactive/telephone hybrid poll conducted in mid-June. Forty-nine percent now say they disapprove of the job the president has done so far in office and 4% are not sure.
The survey found similar results when likely voters were asked specifically to rate President Obama’s performance—47% give him a positive rating, with 22% rating his job performance as “excellent” and 25% rating it as “good.” But slightly more than half (53%) give the president a negative job performance rating, with 10% who say he is doing a “fair” job as president and 43% who say he is doing a “poor” job—up from 36% who said he was doing a poor job in mid-June.
Zogby’s sample is almost 4500 likely voters, with a claimed MOE of 1.5%. Some on the Left claim Rasmussen skews rightward, while those on the Right tend to think of Zogby leaning the other direction. In this case, they’re coming up with the same numbers. Zogby’s polling includes two days prior to the Obama presser; keep an eye on the next survey.

LOL* OK, but it is similar. Bush remarked, too, on a specific case and then backed off.
There are correlations.

Now that we all know how Obama views white people, especially white people in uniform, can you imagine how the future will look for white people under Obamacare…
Or how bad it will look for blacks and hispanics with an “R” after their names. ACORN (or COI) will be in charge of determining what and how much health care you get based on color and voting status, but ideology will trump race.

Let’s be blunt, there are three types of Statist Democrat supporters:
Celebrity Star gazers – people who didn’t pay too much attention and voted based on star power and celebrity – as though the election were a version of “American idol” and forgot the importance of their decision.
Gimmies – people who are just looking for a handout – like “Free Healthcare”. People exemplified by the quotation from Alexander Tytler:
leftist/progressive/statists – people who KNOW that the system they advocate WON’T work, but support it because all the want is power – they don’t give rip sh*t about people, they only want the power over them.

See approval index history here…whether you like this guy and his policies or not, one certainty you can take to the bank is that Axelrod Inc. are in a panic over these numbers. Look at the dramatic change in only three days–that’s without a doubt a hit he’s taken from his prime time disaster this week.

I don’t need a poll to know that those who now pay for health insurance want reforms that bring down the cost of the insurance and associated cost to health care. Those who receive it at no cost to them from their employer want it to stay that way. Those who don’t purchase health insurance for whatever reason, what it free and don’t care about the quality of the care because they will still have their emergency room as back up just as they do now. Of those people, those who can afford it without subsidy are going to be forced to buy it and those who need subsidy are going to get a voucher but will still be forced to pay for it. When these people increasingly find out they are not going to get it free and will have absolutely no choice as to whether to go without, they are going to balk and Obama’s support is going to tank. He knows this, this is why he tried to rham it down our throats.
Most taxpaying Americans don’t support making “the rich people” pay for something to be given to others who don’t make any attempt to gain it on their own. And those Americans understand that there are a lot of people who choose to buy $200 athletic shoes and $100 designer jeans, iPods and other frills rather than ‘waste’ their money on their own health insurance.
I bet you Hillary is laughing her a$$ off.

Is it possible that some of the 18-21 year olds that were swept up into voting by Acorn, woke up now that they are entering the work force and looking for the jobs that Obama was going to create?

Here’s my point. I’ve watched police continue to become increasingly professional in my lifetime. They really have impressed me. No, not all, of course. But man, the police have worked hard at professionalizing and, in my opinion, succeeded in so many ways.
Even in LA, the chases through the freeways that used to put all of us at risk? They stopped that. It’s now quite boring to watch a car chase.
Anyway, my question is when will the police be given credit for this?
When will we arrive when we can just simply say out loud, Gate reacted badly to a simple request by an officer. He made that officer into the “enemy.”
You can’t win once someone does that. Heck, even on-line, we all experience that. Disagree? OK. But how often does a simple disagreement turn into a personal attack of the worst type? I’d say daily.
AnninCA on July 26, 2009 at 12:27 PM
Some were probably those types – the ones that are at that age when they ‘Know everything’.
What they need to do is wake up and learn for their mistakes.
Chainsaw56 on July 26, 2009 at 12:28 PM
Can a POTUS with less than a 50% approval of the American people pass a major healthcare bill that threatens to transform America into a socialist nation forever?
This is why the propagandist polls (Fox and ABC polls) still show the Messiah in the high 50′s in favorabilities. Even they know that if they told the world that Obama had slipped below 50%, that Obama would not be able to bully or browbeat Congress anymore.
With the Rasmussen, Zogby and the PPP polls showing Obama at 50% or below he knows he is in deep doo-doo, and with Sarah Palin’s favorables growing dramatically with women and independents he know his stranglehold on power may be forever relinquished after the 2010 midterms.

9/12 – we’ll be there – arriving on 9/11 – we are driving in from Florida & we found a hotel 2 blocks from capitol (Hyatt I think) – they asked if we were coming for the “BIG PROTEST” and when I said yes, they LOWERED the room rate from 229 to 129.
We really cannot afford this trip at this time, but on the flip side, can we afford, as Americans, NOT to go??

Obviously. This is the clearest example, and most people really do comprehend it. They may excuse him. Some may nuance their reactions.
But honestly, this was a very clear example of the old Black thinking emerging. The “Man” is against you.
That’s where Black politics has ended. Obama supported it. That’s not post-racial.
I personally feel very bad for Obama. His one chance to make a mark on American history was to truly be a post-racial president.
With one small remark, he blew it.
Now, I just finished reading about Lincoln, who wasn’t really for eliminating slavery until a certain point. So I don’t count Obama out on this issue entirely. Presidents do change, dramatically.
We’ll see.
But we sure know where he’s at today. And it isn’t post-racial.

I can tell you exactly what Obama will do to win in 2012. Its the same thing Clinton did in 1996.

We knew where he was in 2006. He sat in Wright’s church for 20 years. The Great Race Speech never sounded like Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address when anyone off the Kool Aid first heard it; nor were these people surprised when Obama threw Wright under the bus right after he won NC. Obama’s foreign policy in the Middle East, his courting the Muslim world and turning on the Jews was predictable.
President Obama is out of sync with the Heartland, because he is heartless. As a Senator, he had no problem voting to throw babies in linen closets to die. That is the mark of humanity or lack thereof, the quote from Matthew about “the least of us.” Obama wants power and will step on anyone to achieve his ends. It will take a miracle for him to change.

To hear Clinton tell it, the Republicans wanted NAFTA, because they are the party of big business and agriculture. The OBAMA House of Waffles called her before hand and told her what to ask and that she would be called on last to wrap up.
That was not her question. That was the question the House of O wanted her to ask the One and Only Ratsh!t in CHief.
If it backfired its their own fault.
She was just the patsy that had to read the question out loud.
And frankly her reading of the question off her official white house index card was pretty bad too. It was clear she did not write that question.

Interesting comment. Where he’s at today is where he’s always been. Seems to me that you evidently didn’t recognize the evidence before your eyes during the campaign. Most people I know recognized Obama’s big speech on race (I agree with Krauthammer the MSM’s lauding of it gave Obama a false sense of ultimate authority) as evidence of his racism and his lack of understanding of the source of racism out here in the hinterlands. He spoke from an intellectual orientation not a personal experience. So I’d be interested in just what made you think he was this so-called post-racial person?
Texas Gal on July 26, 2009 at 1:33 PM
OT: on polls, Juan Williams on Fox News Sunday today was very critical of Obama in the Crowley-Gates fiasco. He rightly pointed out that it has NOTHING to do with racial profiling. In addition, he cited some polling that just came out saying something like 70 to 80% of Americans think Obama has botched his response, either in weighing in to begin with or in what he’s said. The poll also says that even 29% of blacks think he’s blown this.
I may be off on the exact numbers on this, but I look forward to a HA post.

What scares me to death is the affirmative action Drs who will now be admitted to med school. How badly will they dumb down the med schools so they can get through? Like the affirmative action pilots – is that who we really want? Let’s hope we all have a member of the family who is a dr now, or good luck. Canada care? My brother just died because of not doing preventive colonoscopy – when he had symptoms it was too late. Even then he couldn’t get an appointment with an oncologist. FWIW: Guntoting, the comment annoys me too. TXMom, he’s a member of a union, but are you sure we know his party affiliation.
Here’s the thing. The clip of that interview is getting cut up. I saw it a few days ago, and the first run had Crowley conceding that he didn’t vote for him followed by his remark that he’s behind him 110% but he [Obama] shouldn’t have weighed in on a local law enforcement matter.
Read into it what you will, my take was that he started by saying he didn’t vote for him, then thought better of it so that he wouldn’t be disparaged a la Rush Limbaugh plus the racial component. Fault him for being PC, but I think if we had a beer with him, he’d take the position that he wants Americans to succeed, but Obama’s policies won’t get us there. Reading too much into it, maybe. But the guy doesn’t have an army of image consultants evaluationg everything he says. In contrast, Obama does, yet constantly screws up any time he speaks extemporaneously. Say, how’s the tonsil comment working out for him with doctors–they’re having a fit over it.
Obama was never ready for prime time.

Fox News Sunday panel said the white house knew in advance what the question was. If so, Obama wasn’t caught off gaurd.

Obama’s catch 22? The economy. If job losses are in the double digits, the American people will NOT be happy that open borders threatens what little bit of jobs there are..

His whole political existance has been wrapped around racial victimhood and he was going to the well for another ladle full.

“I don’t look like all those other presidents on dollar bills”
TN Mom on July 26, 2009 at 3:04 PM
Maybe you’re both right. Regardless, surely Obama’s handlers prepared him for that question. Whether they knew it was out there or not, surely they knew it was likely someone would ask it. So yes, I agree, Obama wasn’t caught off guard. It was a calculated answer, which makes it all the more chilling.

Exactly. Our post-racial prez plays the race card as expedient.

I saw this in a thread the other day and have refrained from using it not knowing who to h/t. But it is too good to not share, so to whoever posted it first my humble apologies.
One Big Ass Mistake America!

Oh yeah. I really hope it wasn’t. Not knowing the facts, then making a crude judgement, thought out in advance? Too disturbing

The reason Crowley gave for arresting Gates is that “Gates was yelling “this is what happens to black men in America” during which time, a crowd of 7 people began to gather, and according to Sgt. Crowley the onlookers were “alarmed and surprised”

It was the only answer during the whole ‘dog and pony’ show that was not rambling and barely coherent. It was straight from his core beliefs and not what he thought people may want to hear.
thomasaur on July 26, 2009 at 3:22 PM
Gibbs did give us some insight on the President’s preparation for his press conference Wednesday night saying that they went over a lot of topics and the Gates topic was already in the news.

Actually here I am going to have to disagree, not that it is’nt disturbing, but how it came about.
Obama as always came into the presser thoughly prepped for all the expected questions. Ande like the car salesman he has indeed become (Chrysler/GM) he came in with wrote answers calculated to sell the product he is peddling regardless of whether or not that product’s suitability for the prospect/public.
Having all his concentration focused on replacing HMO’s with his HCO (Health care Obamanation) Ms. Sweets’ question thus caught him flat-footed and he responded insinctually. There-by showing his hand, that his first instinct is to assume race as the primary consideration.
If reporters continue to mix up the play book a little and rebel from Obama’s set peice interactions, and only IF, we’ll see more gaffes like this going forward.
Archimedes on July 26, 2009 at 3:34 PM
I agree. No way Axelrod and Emmanuel would have prepped him for that question and then let him step in it like that. He was just accustomed to the press lobbing predicatable soft-balls and didn’t see this one coming.
guntotinglibertarian on July 26, 2009 at 3:47 PM
And the irony is that she most likely thought she was giving him an easy question…
Upstater85 on July 26, 2009 at 3:50 PM
I am listening to every black apologize for Gates, ie…tired, traveling, etc. etc. Truth is Gates started yammering about a lawsuit while Crowley had said nothing.
Gates left no choice for Crowley but to defend itself.

Wow, this is GREAT news for ‘conservatives’!! Too bad all you have is a flip-flopping Scientologist, a creepy backwoods preacher-type and that dopey woman. Maybe you could pull out Gramps McCain again? Remember, he’s not old – just EXPERIENCED!
simplesimon on July 26, 2009 at 4:33 PM
It’s because he is so disillusioned with the government he served for 26 years and he doesn’t believe any action will stop it.
Apparently many of you give O less credit than I do. I believe that he supports the guy in Honduras because he has nothing against blowing a country’s constitution out of the water if it gets in the way. Axelrod, Rahm and O are not men that take “no” and go with it. Every time O’s been told “no” or threatened by a group of people working against him, he has taken action that has started with name calling and ended in the firing of some.
These are men who were able to overturn bankruptcy law without batting an eye! Almost everyone I’ve heard speak about O in depth have admitted that he’s broken the Constitution and yet NO ONE has done a thing about it.

If all that is discussed in threads like this is of so little worry for you that you are feel able to dismissively poo-poo it out of hand, why pray tell are you even here?
The fact that there are obots trolling about speaks volumes and imply great concern indeed of goings on of late!
Just sayin.
