Rasmussen: Obama’s presser backfired

posted at 10:15 am on July 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama obviously hoped to get a swell in support after his prime-time presser, both for his health-care initiative and for his own approval ratings.  Until now, the president has wrung temporary boosts in polling from his major media appearances.  Not this time, though, as Rasmussen shows that negative ratings for his polling increased in the two days after Wednesday’s prime-time press conference:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows that 30% of the nation’s voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-nine percent (39%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -9.

The number who Strongly Disapprove of the President has increased slightly following the prime time press conference on Wednesday night. That figure—39%–is now at the highest level yet recorded. As a result, the overall Approval Index has fallen to the lowest level yet recorded for this President. …

Overall, 49% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance. This is the second straight day that his overall approval rating has been below 50% among Likely Voters nationwide. Fifty-one percent (51%) disapprove. See recent demographic highlights from the Presidential Tracking Poll. For more measures of the President’s performance, see Obama By the Numbers.

These updates are based upon nightly telephone interviews and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. More than two-thirds of the interviews for today’s update were completed after the President’s nationally televised press conference on Wednesday night. The first update based entirely upon interviews conducted after the press conference will be released on Sunday.

What happened?  Besides the distraction of putting his foot in his mouth over the Gates arrest, Obama said nothing new or even particularly interesting on Wednesday night about health care.  The only really new statement made by Obama was that he would approve tax hikes on the middle class as long as they didn’t primarily pay for the reform bill.  Until July 22nd, only Robert Gibbs had hinted at middle-class tax hikes for health-care reform.

Even that was a subtle point lost on most viewers, and certainly not covered in the media.  People took a more visceral lesson from the press conference, which was that Obama has run out of things to say about ObamaCare.  Small wonder he declared that “the time for talk is through,” because it certainly is for him.  Even the normally complaisant media declared his performance “lackluster” — in this case, Newsweek’s Howard Fineman on MS-NBC, of all places:

I’ve been covering Barack Obama for a few years, and it’s usually crystal clear what he is up to. Not last night. This is the first time I’ve asked myself: What was THAT all about?

His prime time press conference was worse than a waste of time. He spent an hour (with the aide of a soporific White House press corps) pouring sand (one grain at a time) into the already-slowing gears of the machinery of health-care reform.

He made no real news on health care, but DID make news on race relations with his discussion of the Skip Gates case — thereby obscuring the topic he supposedly wanted to feature.

Tomorrow, Rasmussen will have the first rolling average of polling completely taken after the presser.  It will take until Tuesday to see what the complete polling shows after Obama had to take back his asinine remarks about that incident and issue a non-apology apology to the officer involved in the arrest.  Somehow, I don’t think the results will give him much momentum.

Obama has exhibited a special way to un-sell his health care plan… first tell everyone your doctor only does it for the money on his fee schedule, when a pill will do, or to avoid life saving or quality of life surgery in favor of a pill, then of course go after the pharmaceutical companies for providing those pills at a profit.

Next he showed the world that he is not only a socialist, but a racist besides.

He also indicated that it is no problem to apologize for America without our permission, but it is impossible for him to apologize for his own foot in mouth moments. It is always someone elses fault. What a jerk!!

My anecdotal explanation of the 49% approval… I have long argued (based on experiences tarting with Democrats back in college) that most leftists are such because they have something outside of politics that drives their allegiance to the Left.

That is, when Bush supported a new entitlement or amnesty, a huge number of Republicans were horrified, because he was doing something opposed to our core, political beliefs.

Most leftists I know will support Obama on just about any issue. I have a liberal friend who is tired of Affirmative Action and the race stuff… but he runs to Gates’ and Obama’s defense and lashes out at the Right… because he needs Democrats to be right otherwise “Christians will come to power and force him to go to church” or something.

The far-left may moan when Obama doesn’t behave, but most Democrats (that I know anyway) will defend just about anything he or the Dems do… because they want their abortions or pornography or free condoms or free needles or free sex or drugs or anything else they think Republicans are secretly trying to deny them (or make them responsible for).

The other group is a group that sees government as the vehicle to enact revenge for them… they are jealous of “the rich” or they had a boss or a boyfriend that screwed them… or they hate white men… so they want government to “get them” no matter what harm it does to the economy or society at large. They just want to take down everybody with them.

There’s my anecdotal analysis for the day. :)

Obama digs his hole even deeper. Tapper wrote a piece where Obama says he’s been a victim of racial profiling. Wait til you read this made-up crap–gteed to make you laugh.

aketapper Was President Obama ever racially profiled? http://bit.ly/16aE7A

But there he [Obama] stood, at a country buffet in Western Illinois, fielding a question from a white customer as if he worked there.

As recalled by a campaign staffer from that time, Obama was standing with three staffers, waiting for their table, when a white man came in and asked for a table for him and his three friends.

“The woman is about to seat me and my party of four, so I imagine you’ll be next,” the President said, trying to defuse any embarrassment by playing it off.

LOL.

JiangxiDad on July 25, 2009 at 10:51 AM

Who hasn’t done that? I can definitely say that I’ve gone to Walmart and asked for help from a woman I thought worked there. Does that me I’m profiling middle-aged white women? Obama is suffering from fake racism on this one. He’s just trying hard to relate to the brothers, but it won’t work.

silvernana on July 25, 2009 at 12:40 PM

The health care fiasco and the continued problems in the economy are what have sunk Obama’s poll numbers, but he’s got to get the Gates kerfuffle settled, because what got him elected last year was the ability to convince swing voters that he was a non-threatning, post-racial African-American candidate.

If Gates pulls him in to this battle to the point that Obama starts looking non post-racial, but instead a more laid-back version of Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson (or if you prefer, Jeremiah Wright), he’s going to lose a bunch of the swing voters forever (for an example of this same phenominon, go back to New York City in the early 1990s when David Dinkins’ support among white liberals plunged after he was seen siding with community activists in Brooklyn after incidents involving Korean grocers and Orthodox Jews. He never got those voters back and lost to Rudy Guiliani in 1993, after beating him four years earlier).

jon1979 on July 25, 2009 at 12:43 PM

“Sources tell the Associated Press that when informed of the refusal of Harry Reid to hold a vote in the Senate and the latest downward trend in the polls, President Obama quietly asked advisers to contact the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to inqire how difficult it would be for them to create a Kenyan birth certificate and Indonesian passport for him.”

Has any checked to see if Sgt. Crowley has been palinized yet in the blue blogs. No mud not dirty enough to toss at him for even not only harming Barry but friends of Barry

I would not be surprised if one of the first calls Gates made was to Barry himself on his high tech Blackberry and told him how evil all cops are. How else would Barry know anything of a simple arrest. If Gates did not know Barry this would not be anything as it would not have even made news anywhere. Any it would not cause him to fall.

tjexcite on July 25, 2009 at 12:56 PM

One truly sickening part of all this is that Gates attempted to make Crowley into a verb (unfair harrassment by a white on a black.) He is quoted as saying, “I was Crowleyed.” If Officer Crowley had not been the white guy who tried to save Reggie Lewis, and taught a racial profiling class, but just a run of the mill cop, his career, his life’s work, his children’s lives, would now be destroyed. Maybe he should try and play it safe next time and stay on the fairways by keeping his mouth shut. I would venture to say that now he plays golf better than he plays the role of POTUS and that is a sad commentary on his dismal performance thus far into his presidency. Mr. President, either you need a new caddy to tell what club to use or you ought to just put your golf clubs away for the rest of this lame duck presidency before you really hurt somebody.

It doesn’t sound controversial to me. Without TOTUS, POTUS more often than not sounds like a stuttering fool trying to summon up whatever bullsh*t he learned at Harvard to sound like he knows what he’s talking about.

Even with TOTUS, my theory is that his stuttering before answering questions at press conferences is the way he buys time while his staff madly Blackberries their his responses to TOTUS.

Left on his own, POTUS will always come up with the equivalent of “the cops acted stupidly’ because facts do not matter to him, or the rest of his ilk, and the good guys are always bad.

Style over substance can only last so long. Reality always trumps rhetoric.

The independents who got snookered into thinking he was a moderate by his false pre-election positioning (as ridiculous as that was) are finally figuring it out, which means he is on a slow, inexorable decline.

It is so difficult living the life of a blind devotee for these two camps – so many mental gyrations to stay on point, so many talking points to remember, and so damn many blog threads to protect!

I’d say it’s nowhere near as difficult as the existence of an anti-Palin troll. Most of us seem happier and can sometimes even comment on things not having to do with Palin. Do us all a favor and try that sometime.

The “sheeple” are slowly awakening! Could it be that the long running love affair with The One has lost its excitement and alure? Maybe Obama’s minions need to spike that kool-aid again.

Christians will come to power and force him to go to church” or something.

Which also explains Palin Derangement Syndrome.

My idiot “moderate” mother voted for Ogabe because she “Just hates that Sarah Palin.

When I asked her why, she burst into tears and told me some lame story about being shamed in a pentacostal church as a 10 year old girl when she refused to come to the altar and accept Jesus. 75 years ago.

These people keep copies of The Handmaid’s Tale on their nightstands and check under their beds for Jerry Falwell before they tuck in for the night.

Even the normally complaisant media declared his performance “lackluster” — in this case, Newsweek’s Howard Fineman on MS-NBC, of all places:

complaisant
Uh… Ed?

1 : marked by an inclination to please or oblige
2 : tending to consent to others’ wishes

Sounds like today’s media to me–especially sense 1.

He’s been saving the “going to church, I’m a religious Christian” card for awhile.

Tomorrow he’ll go to church and carry a very large prominent bible in his hand, like Clinton.

Michelle ain’t going to like getting out of bed to go to church on Sunday morning.

Maybe they just aren’t that into you, Barry.

wildcat84 on July 25, 2009 at 2:00 PM

I’m guessing they had poll numbers that showed some erosion in liberal Democrats and African Americans

You’re such a sunny optimist. Ogabe could be caught on national television wearing a lace nightie while strangling Oprah on the WH lawn and his support among blacks wouldn’t tick down a single iota.

guntotinglibertarian on July 25, 2009 at 2:01 PM

If I were that woman who called the police about a possible break in, I would take it as lessons learned. The next time she sees two black men coming out of Gates’ house putting a 52 inch TV in a pickup truck she should just assume they were taking it to Gates’ “mama”.

When a white woman’s meal ticket is in danger, she’ll come to her senses, and do the right thing…”She’ll be screaming, “throw the bum out”, with the rest of us. Unemployment figures will be through the roof by year-end.

O think the bamster and co. thought the Gates/Crowley afair was a gift they could use for distraction from the deathcare debacle. I’m sure they would have ridden it further untilit came out that there were tapes of Gates ‘stellar’ performance.

DATELINE, WASHINGTON

A new federal crime has been signed into law by Barack Hussein Obama in the midst of his “stupid” officer comment. The new law, EWW, or “Existing While White”, penalizes Caucasians simply for being alive. A fine of $5,000 will be levied against all Caucasians and “half-breeds” (Hussein’s words) to the exclusion of himself.
