Rasmussen: Obama’s presser backfired

posted at 10:15 am on July 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama obviously hoped to get a swell in support after his prime-time presser, both for his health-care initiative and for his own approval ratings.  Until now, the president has wrung temporary boosts in polling from his major media appearances.  Not this time, though, as Rasmussen shows that negative ratings for his polling increased in the two days after Wednesday’s prime-time press conference:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows that 30% of the nation’s voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-nine percent (39%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -9.

The number who Strongly Disapprove of the President has increased slightly following the prime time press conference on Wednesday night. That figure—39%–is now at the highest level yet recorded. As a result, the overall Approval Index has fallen to the lowest level yet recorded for this President. …

Overall, 49% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance. This is the second straight day that his overall approval rating has been below 50% among Likely Voters nationwide. Fifty-one percent (51%) disapprove. See recent demographic highlights from the Presidential Tracking Poll. For more measures of the President’s performance, see Obama By the Numbers.

These updates are based upon nightly telephone interviews and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. More than two-thirds of the interviews for today’s update were completed after the President’s nationally televised press conference on Wednesday night. The first update based entirely upon interviews conducted after the press conference will be released on Sunday.

What happened?  Besides the distraction of putting his foot in his mouth over the Gates arrest, Obama said nothing new or even particularly interesting on Wednesday night about health care.  The only really new statement made by Obama was that he would approve tax hikes on the middle class as long as they didn’t primarily pay for the reform bill.  Until July 22nd, only Robert Gibbs had hinted at middle-class tax hikes for health-care reform.

Even that was a subtle point lost on most viewers, and certainly not covered in the media.  People took a more visceral lesson from the press conference, which was that Obama has run out of things to say about ObamaCare.  Small wonder he declared that “the time for talk is through,” because it certainly is for him.  Even the normally complaisant media declared his performance “lackluster” — in this case, Newsweek’s Howard Fineman on MS-NBC, of all places:

I’ve been covering Barack Obama for a few years, and it’s usually crystal clear what he is up to. Not last night. This is the first time I’ve asked myself: What was THAT all about?

His prime time press conference was worse than a waste of time. He spent an hour (with the aide of a soporific White House press corps) pouring sand (one grain at a time) into the already-slowing gears of the machinery of health-care reform.

He made no real news on health care, but DID make news on race relations with his discussion of the Skip Gates case — thereby obscuring the topic he supposedly wanted to feature.

Tomorrow, Rasmussen will have the first rolling average of polling completely taken after the presser.  It will take until Tuesday to see what the complete polling shows after Obama had to take back his asinine remarks about that incident and issue a non-apology apology to the officer involved in the arrest.  Somehow, I don’t think the results will give him much momentum.

MaiDee on July 25, 2009 at 10:37 AM

The fact that the press didn’t think that his “performance” was up to par is the least of O’s worries at this point. The thing that he should really be worried about is that the House will have a final bill pretty soon that will be picked apart over the next month or so and these will be deal breakers:

- public funded abortion
- higher taxes (for everyone)
- end or life “counseling”
- loss of present coverage (eventually)
- seniors getting the shaft (really important)
- monstrous additions to the deficit

This thing won’t survive the light that is soon to be shed on it – hence why O and Co. wanted to pass it with haste and no scrutiny. His plan to bumrush this bill is gone, so the only question for Obama at this point is how to best polish this turd so as to make it palatable to the public. The Dems (from red districts) have to know that if they vote for this then they’re toast in 2010 which is why they’re giving the impression of pushback.

Obama rode into DC on the hope train but the voters are seeing that he simply can’t (or at least isn’t) producing the results that he promised – hence his poll number freefall. And because he’s on TV every day his own words will be his downfall as the attack ads write themselves in 2010/12. I predict that as UE continues to rise, inflation rachets up and a few more int’l events bite him in the arse, O and Co. will look back at 50% approval numbers with wistful nostagia.

The naiveté and amateurism of Obama is so obvious now that his campaign supporters that make up the press can’t even hide it anymore.

Tracking below Carter after the all out blitz by the press over the last year and a half is seriously bad news for Mr. 57 states.

No surprise. Obama spent the years from 2003 (start off his run for Senate) until 2009 (POTUS win) in a bubble, with no real responsibility that couldn’t be answered by checking focus groups or voting “present”.

Least prepared President EVAH!

Obama thinks he won on his own personal magnetism, so by using his magnetism now, he can persuade We The People to support his health care plan.

Problem is, it ain’t so. Hope, Change, and the First Black President were adequate reasons to vote for Obama – “Backstabbing weasel” an adequate reason to not vote for McCain – but none of the above are good enough reasons for We The People to vote for socialized medicine.

Leaving the Crowley-Gates affair for a moment, here’s a worthwhile op-ed by Newt on Waxman’s footdragging on fraud and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid.

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/columns/Henry-Waxman—fraud-king-8011982-51515927.html

Why don’t the feds do several things before undertaking insurance reform?

First, shore up the kind of fraud that Newt mentions in the Washington Examiner piece.

Second, undertake tort reform rather than opening the floodgates to qui tam actions.

Third, sign up kids eligible for S-Chip–as long as we have it.

Fourth, sign up those eligible for Medicaid.

With those things accomplished, let’s see what else needs to be fixed.

Some have suggested that the Gates affair was planned to distract from the issue but something tells me that it wasn’t. The question was certainly a plant but Obama’s response sure as hell wasn’t planned. He came off like a moron and had to personally attend the press conference to quiet things down. If this was meant as a distraction, then Obama would be stringing it out for a few more days to buy more time for the Dems – they want this story gone.

Yeah, cuz people wouldn’t want the President bringing out the big guns to take down a bunch of murdering terrorist scum. They’d want the government to do it nicely. Yet another example of how the left just doesn’t GET IT. They think this hurts Bush, but with the next terrorist attack here, every head will turn toward Obama and say “Whatcha gonna do about it?” (And given that we just killed OBL’s son, I think that time is, unfortunately, coming closer.)

Rational Thought on July 25, 2009 at 10:44 AM

The only way to make this topic “Sexy” or “Sensational” is to show the negative aspects of Socialized medicine, like Fox News who has and seen their ratings go up. The Dems have dumbed down their constituency to Popularity contest like American Idol…you can’t turn Health Care Insurance into something as simplistic as a popularity contest. They did it to themselves it is a double edge sword on the one hand their base responds to herd mentality on the other hand they don’t get health care insurance it isn’t simple enough. The Dems can’t make it simpler or people will see through it they keep the discussion complicated on purpose.

The cop should tell Obama to fuck himself and demand a real apology or sue him for defamation.

texaninfidel on July 25, 2009 at 11:11 AM

I, ah, am not sure, let me, hmm, restate that the American people are, um, sort of, in some ways anyway, starting to see that, ah, electing a Community Organizer to the, um, highest office in the land, might not have been, or should I rephrase it, could be a move they’ll regret.

What the polls mfailt to note!: Obama is staggeringly popular in Theran and Pyongyang… at least in some quarters.

Damn right-wing press!

mankai on July 25, 2009 at 11:12 AM

What this poll really should say is 30% of Americans are clueless.

That’s not news. Haven’t you seen the video where they polled people who were voting for O before the election? They didn’t know who was in power (or care for that matter) and they were positive that every stupid remark quoted from O’s lips was from McCain. They are still sending in their electricity and water bills to O and waiting for their free gas card to show up in the mail.

mfailt = fail… no idea how that happened! I guess I started to type “missed” and decided to “rephrase” it!

Appoint a News Control Czar.

Post Racial President my a#@. This guy was a community organizer(race hustler). That’s not ever going to change. He’ll work in reparations under any other name. I still think him and Gates figured this one out ahead of time to detract from all of his Socialist failures…Time will tell.

adamsmith on July 25, 2009 at 11:14 AM

What this poll really should say is 30% 53% of Americans are clueless.

FIFY

I’m shocked the joke is still at 49% approval.

LOL! Hey, there gave been times when I have been profiled too. Like the time when someone at the WalMart asked me where the tool section was.

pearson on July 25, 2009 at 11:16 AM

The great whirlwind from the Great White North, the Sarah Palin express, is about to descend on the lower 48 and destroy every socialist and socialist idea in its path including sending Obama’s poll numbers further into the dumper.

technopeasant on July 25, 2009 at 11:17 AM

Obama is praying for a huge meteor to hit the US….
Then he can act like Morgan Freeman in a disaster film.
But really – Obama is probably pacing in the Oval office hoping that
a 9-11 like disaster can change his fortunes. He is wondering
why Al Qaeda has deserted him.

Ed said,

“Besides the distraction of putting his foot in his mouth over the
Gates arrest, ”

Far from a distraction, an unguarded comment provides a look into this
mans beliefs.

We have elected a prejudiced, race baiting lawyer.

texaninfidel on July 25, 2009 at 11:11 AM

Heh, I tell Obama to fuck himself everytime I see him on TV – and that has been a lot lately…..

izoneguy on July 25, 2009 at 11:21 AM

Obama to Obama: “You are going to destroy my Presidency. When are you going to release your records anyway? You need an easy slamdunk t put your opponents in their place and makes you into a certified native-born American hero. The time for talk is through. Just do it, Lebron.”
