CBO does it again: Key ObamaCare cost-cutting proposal probably won’t save money
posted at 4:43 pm on July 25, 2009 by Allahpundit
I feel like … dancing down the aisle at a wedding or something.
A key House chairman and moderate House Democrats on Tuesday agreed to a White House-backed proposal that would give an outside panel the power to make cuts to government-financed health care programs. White House budget director Peter Orszag declared the plan “probably the most important piece that can be added” to the House’s health care reform legislation.
But on Saturday, the Congressional Budget Office said the proposal to give an independent panel the power to keep Medicare spending in check would only save about $2 billion over 10 years- a drop in the bucket compared to the bill’s $1 trillion price tag.
“In CBO’s judgment, the probability is high that no savings would be realized … but there is also a chance that substantial savings might be realized. Looking beyond the 10-year budget window, CBO expects that this proposal would generate larger but still modest savings on the same probabilistic basis,” CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf wrote in a letter to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer on Saturday.
The sweetest part of this? Obama tried to strong-arm the CBO the last time they sent up a red flag about what an awful boondoggle his pet program will turn out to be. Here’s what he gets for trying things “the Chicago way.” Meanwhile, Ace has a thoughtful post about the scam of setting up an independent body to cut health-care costs when that body (b) isn’t really independent and (b) therefore won’t really cut costs. I’ll borrow our exit question from him: Is our monstrous new federal bureaucracy aiming to be merely deficit-neutral or to actually reduce deficits over the long haul by *giggle* lowering overall health-care spending (Medicare included)? Let me be clear: The One hasn’t been clear.

Actualy, Obama has been clear that all these changes would LOWER the costs of the entire healthcare system.
He just can’t seem to explain how.
Its like the Global Warmers who can’t explain how CO2 will continue to increase its Greehouse effect, when all the energy bands it uses are already being absorbed by existing CO2.
Sometimes its the simple questions, and their lack of an answer, that shows their true agenda.

Obama to Elmendorf: “Ok, see, I know that you’re not from Chicago, but when I called you over and said, ‘That’s a nice job you got there, be a shame if anything ever happened to it,’ you were supposed to issue a new more positive report. See how that works? Ok. Let’s try this again. So, Doug, that’s a nice family you got there…any questions?”

Obviously the CBO is part of the tired old failed way of skipping into the flower filled sunny world of the future. There is no greater danger facing us ever in the history of the universe than the CBO, no challenge greater or more urgent than moving past the failed policy of attaching costs to goals.

The charm offensive backfired since that was the only point to preempt programming on Wednesday night to essentially say the same crap again. It would have failed even if the message didn’t get derailed talking about Gates and “his house.”
Assuming Congress doesn’t pass any sort of a plan in the next 13 days and goes away on their government paid month-long vacation, I suspect that some sort of less ambitious plan will be worked out where the filthy liar in the White House can claim the victory he desperately needs. That being said, the filthy liar is arrogant enough I can easily see him refusing to yield on the points that are causing his scheme to fail (like public plans and fining people for not being part of a plan).

I am amazed at what I am hearing these days from staunchly liberal elderly who are dead set against Obama care. Brought this up today(hopefully coyly)at a local fair during coffee time just to test the waters. I sat there quite agape as one after the other they condemned this plan for various reasons. I was also amazed at how well informed most were on this particular issue. No question that these always vote, and always vote in their own self-interest—if I were a Blue Dog Dem my hands might be shaking a little.

I am still trying to figure out how you have 50 million more people going to the same amount of doctors. With this new plan, they are taking away the incentive for young people to go into the debt necessary to become a doctor. I am tired of the left being envious of anyone who makes something of themselves and is able to accumulate a little wealth. I thought that was part of the American dream. I forgot that we don’t want some people to feel bad because they didn’t have enough iniative to make something of themselves. We should all just have equal outcome with some people putting in all the effort and others just sitting around waiting on their piece of the pie.

I got news for you people. Don’t celebrate yet. Some kind of health care bill will come because too many groups want it. They each think they can benefit. Obama will pay them to sell you out. This from Fox News:
The drug industry, the American Medical Association, hospital groups and the insurance lobby are all saying Congress must make major changes this year. Television ads paid for by drug companies and insurers continued to emphasize the benefits of a health care overhaul — not the groups’ objections to some of the proposals.

One of the little hidden gems of this plan that most people don’t know… is that a large portion of the uninsured are young very healthy adults. They CHOOSE not to pay for health insurance at this time of their life, because they are trying to get themselves ahead in life, and see it as a calculated risk.
Forcing thses folks to pay for insurance when they do NOT use the Doctors, will spread the health care burden to them.
Unconstitutional and UnAmerican, but thats part of their thinking.
Romeo13 on July 25, 2009 at 5:15 PM
Those silly geese. They haven’t learned anything. Gun rights are going to be destroyed by the EPA. Guns are, obviously, greenhouse gas producers of the worst sort and will fall under the new “pollution” regulations – you know, the “pollution” that plants live off of. That was how California forced their insane regulations on autos and how the new CAFE standards were argued (not to save oil but to stop CO2 emmissions).
Guns are just the next target of climate change. You laugh … but you’ll see.

Blue Dogs should be quaking in their boots . . .
Govgirl on July 25, 2009 at 5:21 PM
Ah, but thats part of their plan… he won’t pay, McDonalds will, even for part time workers.
Of course, what that really means is he won’t have a job as it will be more cost efficient to hire more full time workers than part timers… but he’ll never know why that job didn’t exist in the first place…
Of course, then HE will have to pay for his own health insurance or get nailed for a Tax liability… on his non existant wages.

Now that the aging Babyboomers are getting the idea that this plan is really a plan to do away with the elderly population, it ought to scare them to death. Denying care based on the calculation of how much you have left to contribute to the pot is sickening. You can pay in your whole life, but once you are too old, you become expendible to these monsters.

Obamacare is hastily devised legislation and we (conservatives) have to go the second and third steps in effectively killing this. A full exposure of all aspects of this bill must be performed. A full showing of the second and third order effects of this legislation must be known. Any less is not a national service, the left shall only shelf it until the political wind allow it to be stepwise implemented through other legislation—read S-Chip.

If you have a job, even part time, your employer will pay for your health care, or get hit with a Tax.

They, like the low-income illegal aliens who sign up for ObamaCare, will be paying for it with the “tax credits” that they receive from the U.S. Treasury. The term “tax credits” sounds less objectionable to taxpayers than “welfare payments,” but that’s what they are.
And those young people who are going to be forced to buy insurance may not know it yet, but they’re going to be paying through the nose for private policies. The House bill restricts the way the market can rate policies. Usually in the free market, a young person’s policy would be relatively cheap, because their risk of needing expensive coverage is low. But the government is not going to allow the usual market mechanisms to work, and young people are going to end up paying a lot more than they otherwise would have. Just one of many unpleasant little surprises Uncle Sugar has in store for the ignorant masses.

Speaking of illegals, they will be eligible to sign up for the public option (paid for by U.S. taxpayers, of course), but if they choose not to sign up for it, they are specifically exempted from the requirement — imposed on all U.S. citizens — that they purchase private coverage or else pay a fine.
Nice deal for them, right? They get coverage if they want it (at our expense), but they’re not penalized (like we are) if they decide they don’t want it.
Isn’t “social justice” just grand?
