WaPo: Palin’s net favorable rating now at -13
posted at 5:40 pm on July 24, 2009 by Allahpundit
I’ll give you the sample up front to save you time. Dems 33, Reps 22, Inds 41; Libs 20, Mods 39, Cons 38. That’s actually the smallest percentage of Democrats sampled in a WaPo poll in 18 months.
The good news? She’ll have plenty of time and money now, thanks to SarahPAC, to turn the numbers around. The bad news:

The last line, obviously, is the killer. This same poll finds the current GOP field shaking out this way: Huckabee 26, Romney 21, Palin 19, which may sound like a fluke but isn’t really. As noted the last time I blogged a 2012 poll, Huck frequently fares best head to head against The One in hypothetical match-ups. If he and Palin have to battle it out for evangelicals in the primary, he’ll be sorely tempted to leverage those numbers on how she handles complex issues to accuse her of ignorance on policy — but how do you make that attack without bleeding over into self-defeating ad hominem nastiness? Run an ad charging her with ignorance and it’ll be read as charging her with stupidity, which isn’t true and the unfairness of which will make her seem sympathetic. Plus, Huck’s never been real adept at concealing his personal disdain for opponents he’s attacking. He might have to skip this area altogether, let the public come to its own conclusions, and focus instead on painting her as a RINO for supporting a path to citizenship and some sort of financial rescue while on the trail last year.
Another fun fact from the poll. Make of it what you will.

Evidence of a public preference for a Keynesian “do something, anything!” approach during a recession, or a broader signal of where America’s secret economic heart truly lies?
Oh, one more thing: 58 percent now say Sotomayor should be confirmed, a higher post-hearing number than WaPo recorded for either Roberts or Alito. Naturally, even though there’s not a thing they can do to stop her, Cornyn and Hatch declared today that they’re voting no anyway. Smart thinkin’, GOP.

Palin should go away for a while, and I suspect that’s exactly what she is going to do.
It will be amusing to see what excuse some will come up with to keep her in the news, if that is what she does.

I doubt she’s going to go away anytime soon. I suspect, more than going away, we’re going to be seeing/hearing A LOT from her in the coming days/weeks/months. And in a way, that concerns me. If she gets caught up in being the “opposition” and campaigning for everyone and their moms, when will she take the time to study and learn the things she needs to learn? I certainly hope she doesn’t intend to ‘wing it’.

Palin’s net favorable rating now at -13 among random adults.
Hmm, that’s almost as interesting as Obama’s rating now at -8 among likely voters (Rasmusen, 7/24/09); and he’s had a year and half of pure adulation from the mainstream media.
I wonder what Palin’s would be with similar coverage for the last year and a half?

Five reasons why this WAPO-ABC is a completely bogus poll and complete disinformation:
1)ABC has lost all legitimacy by allowing Obama to conduct his healthcare infomercial on its network
2)WAPO-ABC is one of the lowest rated pollsters in terms of accuracy
3)it claims in the spirit of propaganda that Obama’s favorables/unfavorables are 59/37 while the Rasmussen daily tracking poll shows it today at 49/51 and Zogby comes out with a 48/49 result. By the way Rasmussen is rated the #1 pollster for accuracy and Zogby used 4470 likely voters to find out his result
4)WAPO-ABC used ‘adults’ rather than likely voters
5)Taken together with Obama’s F/UF (59/37)Palin’s 40/53 F/UF would mean that there would be an overall spread of 36 points overall in Obama’s favor which is totally ridiculous in the stratophere of the extremes, Nobody could trail their opponent that badly and be only 8 points behind in one poll 51-43 (PPP) and 6 points behind in another 48-42 (Rasmussen) in a head-to-head matchup.
In addition other than the TV network polls here are Sarah’s F/UF for the last 4 private polls taken:
F UF
PPP 7/20 47 45
GALLUP 7/16 43 45
PPP 7/08 46 45
PEW 6/18 45 44

Reagan spent decades learning about history, politics, economics. Read voraciously, talked to leaders in all sorts of fields. Was spoon-fed by Buckley.
And served 2 terms as Gov of the largest state in the Union.
Absolutly no comparison between his knowledge, experience and Palin’s.

This is precisely my point. I need for my candidate to go BEYOND “talking point” and actually have a grasp of what the hell is going on and how to fix it. And since Palin ISN’T freaking idiot, I EXPECT her to do this and I KNOW she can.
Don’t sell me a lesser version of all that Palin can be, and don’t encourage it either.
LiquidH2O on July 24, 2009 at 6:37 PM
Reagan was 56 when elected governor the first time and he DIDN’t quit his job. He was 69 when elected president. Call me old fashioned but candidates in their forties simply have not had the life experience needed for POTUS.

Upstater85 on July 24, 2009 at 6:40 PM
Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the candidate in his or her 40s. I’d agree that most don’t, but it’s not as though Reagan had a life in politics. His time in politics wasn’t such that it necessitated him being in his 60s when elected president.
Esthier on July 24, 2009 at 6:41 PM

upinak on July 24, 2009 at 6:41 PM
Reagan wasn’t being targeted by the most expansive campaign in modern history to destroy him either … which by the way has failed miserably.
Leaving office, after completing her agenda, and leaving Alaska in the best shape it’s been in decades wasn’t quitting, it was smart and beat the democrats at their own game.
Beating the media AND the democrats at their own game is an awesome talent for someone who’s supposedly incompetent and politically “dead”.
darwin on July 24, 2009 at 6:41 PM

Upstater85 on July 24, 2009 at 6:41 PM
Sorry, getting posts confused. I thought you were talking about Reagan.
Esthier on July 24, 2009 at 6:42 PM
I take it that you were not following American politics during the 1970s? Reagan was portrayed as a lightweight, continously ridiculed for “Bedtime with Bonzo” and other “accomplishments”. A significant portion of the establishment GOP considered him a non-entity, intellectual lightweight. Hence the independent run by John Anderson once Reagan secured the 80 nomonation.
The similarites between Reagan and Palin are quite obvious for those of us who remember the 1970s.
Norwegian on July 24, 2009 at 6:42 PM
Proof once again that polls aren’t designed to measure public opinion but to influence public opinion.
Besides, as Chrichill noted – there is no such thing as “public” opinion – only “published” opinion.

Ugh. I’m one of the most conservative people I know and hell would have to freeze over in order for me to vote for Sarah Palin. I like her okay, I just don’t think she’s savvy enough to be President. Nothing she has said outside of a well polished speech, has lead me to believe that she is well informed outside of crash-course prep sessions. Bark all you want. If she’s the nominee, I’ll likely vote for the Libertarian.
She just seems way too clueless. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to go shopping with her, but President material — uh, no.
Romney is my guy, but if Huckabee is the nominee, I’d vote for him too.

upinak on July 24, 2009 at 6:43 PM
I would suggest that the real favorites for the Republicans actually play out in reverse order from the ones cited in that poll; ie., Palin at the top, Romney a close middling, and Huckabee at the bottom. No one, and I mean no one, has any buzz going about Huckabee.
I would have been better to drop down the Headline editorial by Kerry and Boxer (two really informed senators!!! really!), who claim that Palin doesn’t know anything about energy and national security. I read several pages from the WaPo commenters until it was clear that Palin-bashers know nothing about energy development, rely on TPM talking points and media “experts” like John Stewart and SNL, and fail to see the economic disaster that cap and trade will impose on their lives.
If the commenters are typical of the type of respondents to the poll, then Sarah Palin has a task ahead of her in educating the American public about reality.
onlineanalyst on July 24, 2009 at 6:44 PM
Non-sequitor. I did not say there was no comparison to what the left was saying about Reagan and Palin.
I said there is no comparison between his depth of knowledge and experience and hers.
And when Reagan was attacked, he parried with wit, humor and facts. Sarah hasn’t learned that. Few people can.
