WaPo: Palin’s net favorable rating now at -13

posted at 5:40 pm on July 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

I’ll give you the sample up front to save you time. Dems 33, Reps 22, Inds 41; Libs 20, Mods 39, Cons 38. That’s actually the smallest percentage of Democrats sampled in a WaPo poll in 18 months.

The good news? She’ll have plenty of time and money now, thanks to SarahPAC, to turn the numbers around. The bad news:

The last line, obviously, is the killer. This same poll finds the current GOP field shaking out this way: Huckabee 26, Romney 21, Palin 19, which may sound like a fluke but isn’t really. As noted the last time I blogged a 2012 poll, Huck frequently fares best head to head against The One in hypothetical match-ups. If he and Palin have to battle it out for evangelicals in the primary, he’ll be sorely tempted to leverage those numbers on how she handles complex issues to accuse her of ignorance on policy — but how do you make that attack without bleeding over into self-defeating ad hominem nastiness? Run an ad charging her with ignorance and it’ll be read as charging her with stupidity, which isn’t true and the unfairness of which will make her seem sympathetic. Plus, Huck’s never been real adept at concealing his personal disdain for opponents he’s attacking. He might have to skip this area altogether, let the public come to its own conclusions, and focus instead on painting her as a RINO for supporting a path to citizenship and some sort of financial rescue while on the trail last year.

Another fun fact from the poll. Make of it what you will.

Evidence of a public preference for a Keynesian “do something, anything!” approach during a recession, or a broader signal of where America’s secret economic heart truly lies?

Oh, one more thing: 58 percent now say Sotomayor should be confirmed, a higher post-hearing number than WaPo recorded for either Roberts or Alito. Naturally, even though there’s not a thing they can do to stop her, Cornyn and Hatch declared today that they’re voting no anyway. Smart thinkin’, GOP.

Dear Lord,

Please no Huckabee.

Right wing news polls Conservative bloggers.

2) Do you believe Sarah Palin is still a viable potential contender for the Republican nomination in 2012 after announcing that she will resign as Governor of Alaska?

Yes: 42 (63%)
No: 25 (37%)

It’s one poll. Polls are snapshots. Others show a more favorable picture. Most, even supporters, would agree, she’s got some “persuasion and outreach” to do.

Next question?

Robert_Paulson on July 24, 2009 at 5:46 PM

So long as we let the Left choose our candidates for us, as WaPo is doing, we will be at an extreme disadvantage.

This WaPo polling seems, just as their polling last year provided evidence of, to be an attempt to cull any recognizable conservative from the list of possible GOP candidates. Agitprop at its finest. Lenin would be proud.

By the way, the single best thing for Sarah Palin is for the 2012 GOP nomination field, assuming she runs, to feature several candidates. The more, the better for Palin.

Here’s a novel strategy. Whichever Republican nominee the State run media hates and denigrates the most is the one that we should nominate. They fear something about Palin, and it is a good sign that she would be good on the issues for the conservatives.

Barbour/Jindal 2012.

Barbour is the only one I’d openly resist at this point. Even conservatives won’t like him once his lobbying background is fully exposed and his weird flirtations with the CCC in MS are reported on. I think he’s one of our best strategists, but 2012 — against Obama — would be tough for him.

So many polls and the data on all of them seem to be saying:

1. The Big 3 are still The Big 3 and not one of them can break away from the pack, yet.

2. From the favorables in the Republican and Conservative columns, only Palin or Huck stand a chance at being the nominee. Both do well enough to win the primary, but for now, neither would win a general election.

3. Romney is doing well as a general election candidate, but not as one for the primaries. If this continues for the next 3 years, he won’t make it out of the primaries.

Evidence of a public preference for a Keynesian “do something, anything!” approach during a recession, or a broader signal of where America’s secret economic heart truly lies?

How the hell do you draw that conclusion when the numbers are clearly trending against him? A 16 point drop in the “confident” column and a 15 point increase in the “not confident” column is evidence of a Keynsian “do something, anything” approach???

thirteen28 on July 24, 2009 at 5:56 PM

This is tiring. Didn’t you enough comments this morning?

BTW, Palin and Huckabee are not going to fight for evangelical vote. if anything, Palin is already eating into Romney’s base and if she declares, she’ll easily flip over Huck’s base too. Remember, half of GOP voters will be women. Palin’s favorables might be low with women in general but they are very high with conservative women. GOP men can’t match that. Identity politics , baby!

The only way he’s going to be able to leverage “any of those numbers” is if she REMAINS ignorant of complex national/international issues. And now, with the fact that she’s essentially unemployed and has all the time in the world to “bone up” (as CK keeps saying) on the topics at hand…her ‘ignorance’ shouldn’t be a factor to even consider in 2012 (God willing).

I have already schooled half a dozen Northeast relatives of mine (all true conservatives) on why this jackass is not who he appears to be on Fox News. I say let the media build Huck up as the frontrunner so the opposition can start unleashing all the dirt on him. It won’t even take very much digging.
