Video: Rush on the media’s Waterloo
posted at 8:47 am on July 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
It’s been a great week for ABBA fans, hasn’t it? Their catalog hasn’t been this relevant since Pierce Brosnan warbled his way through Mamma Mia! First, Jim DeMint says that the health-care debate will be Barack Obama’s Waterloo, and now Rush Limbaugh riffs on that to point out that Obama’s flop in the prime-time presser will be the media’s Waterloo, too. He makes a better point than DeMint, too:
Rush has this dead-on correct, especially in the weird promotion of the press conference. Perhaps they did the same thing for George Bush, who held very few prime-time press conferences in eight years, but I don’t recall it. The media, especially the televised media, appear to have hung their economic fortunes on Obama.
US News said that the print media would turn more adversarial in this press conference, though, and that may have been true. None of the questions were softballs of the Jeff Zeleny “what do you find most enchanting about being you” type from just three months ago. Lynn Sweet knew what she was doing when she offered Obama enough bait to make a foolish tactical and political mistake in giving his confessed ignorant opinion of a incident in Cambridge, which overwhelmed his health-care message and had the White House backpedaling the next day. In that instant, Sweet gave Obama enough room to implode, and Obama naively obliged.
The media have a long way to go before they can regain enough credibility to become Obama’s Waterloo, but that’s a start. When the networks start refusing to carry Obama live in prime time, put away the countdown clocks promoting him, and increase their pressure for real answers, then perhaps they can adopt the mantle of independence.

some watchdog activity would restore credibility. Do these media guys realize that one day even Obama and his influence peddling operation will not be in office one day?
rob verdi on July 24, 2009 at 8:51 AM
We’re in-between elections, so the big media folks can get miffed at Obama, just like they did at times against Clinton, and know there’s still plenty of time to come back and go after Republicans during the 2010 and 2012 election cycles.
(Also, Rush already has the Barney Frank “Budget Queen” parody, so he’s pretty much working his way through the ABBA songbook during the current administration.)

Even Glenn Reynolds, who has a pretty strong dislike of Rush, has linked to this with a “Heh.”

When the media dump the Ogabe whores such as Matthews and Olbermann, Sanchez and Williams, then maybe I’ll believe it.
People (albeit a shrinking number) tune in to these shows and get an Ogabe drool-a-thon every single night, that isn’t news it propaganda.

Pravda means truth. Isvestia means news. These were the two major papers in the USSR. Russians used to say, “There’s no pravda in Isvestia, and no isvestia in Pravda.”
We’re pretty much at that stage MSM-wise.

To totally derail the conversation, I have to ask: has he lost weight? It looks like it.

Do these media stenographers understand that their top notch healthcare plans will be dropped if Omarxist gets his Cuban style healtcare bill passed?
Their liberal rags and state run news shows are hemmoraging money at a rapid pace and are just waiting for the 1st opportunity to shed some unwanted overhead costs. At the minimum, they will be taxed and fined if they stay privately covered.

I think he’s lost about 30 pounds. But as Rush will tell you, he’s a yo-yo dieter.

Rush is the best. No ranting and raving, no name-calling, just factual and brutally honest analysis. Not only did he survive Rahm Emanuel’s lame attempt to destroy him, he has come out of it even stronger and more focused (he looks great in this segment too.)

The MSM will continue to propagandize the Prince of Incompetence’s “credibility”. Although, he never had, or will have any with the people that are intelligent enough to know better; Numbering more than 50% from the outset.

They’re all Liberals, they simply are doing what Liberals do. Liberals in the media have been acting especially crazy since 92, when they got their collective asses knocked to the floor by the Republican landslide that swept the country. They gathered in Starbucks around the nation, plotting and planning the way forward, promising to never again bust the balls of their own. Being Liberals, they blamed the election results of 92 on themselves for having been to tough on their own guys and gals.
F*** everyone of them!

I don’t think it’s fair to say Rush made a better point than DeMint. He made a different point. Rush took on the media. He’s a part of the media. DeMint’s point was political. He’s a politician. They both make good points.
But give DeMint his due. What other elected official has made Obama squirm on national TV…other than Biden, that is?

Every week he attacks a group. Wednesday he put down docs. Put downs is a childish negotiating tactic. Since he is clueless about medicine ( he may have been aware of patient dumping Michelle assisted) why doesn’t the AMA call out his sock puppet crackpot economics team. Call them out for malpractice.

Easy on the champagne folks. Rumor has it that Rahm is now saying the Health care bill, unread, will be brought up for a House vote before the August recess. By having this debate be about Obama’s presidency instead of the merits of the bill it might actually cause it to be passed as the Dem party realizes its future is at stake.
Never to be forgotten as a video previously posted stated, the Dems do not need any Repub votes to pass this Health care abomination.
I would stop kicking this dog while it is down.

I think the Lynn Sweet question was planted. He rushed to make sure he got her question in. I think it was intended to give Obambi the opportunity to get props from the libs who haven’t been too happy with him lately. It backfired on him big time.
ctmom on July 24, 2009 at 9:10 AM
What “tough” questions got asked? I didn’t hear any that were particularly tough. Sure, he got some of the basic questions asking him to respond to criticism; but all Presidents get those, and they are effectively soft-ball questions.

“Willingly sacrifice every characteristic that makes quality journalism.”
Accurately said, and well put, the MSM has become nothing more shills for Marxism, and facism, they are just another version ACORN.
From snickering, and cell phones ringing at Bush’s press conferences, to vulgar lies about Sarah Palin, to swooning over Obama, they are far worse than the old Soviet rag, Tass, even moreso that they do it willingly.
They spout Democrat Party memes as if they are fact, and willingly take their orders from MoveOn. An ancient Chinese philosopher said “if you believe everything you read, don’t read”, more acurately for the current MSM would be “if you believe anything the MSM says, don’t listen.”

Good for him. When I saw him on Fox a few months ago giving his “first nationally televised address to the nation,” he looked both uncomfortable and unhealthy. I’m glad to see he’s taking better care of himself now. Hope he can keep it off.
As for his comments about the MSM, he’s spot on. They put this radical, race-obsessed, Marxist, community organizer in the White House with their slobberingly worshipful coverage of him and his creepy wife, and now they’re doing everything possible to try and cover for his obvious incompetence. But the public is starting to catch on, and when they finally realize how badly they’ve been had, there will be hell to pay.

I’d say about 50-60 pounds. He looks great. I’m glad he’s taking better care of himself; he needs to be around a long time. This interview was intense…I’m glad Greta just sits back and lets him talk away on her prime time show, particularly in his skewering the skeletal remains of what is the American media.

If Ms. Sweet’s question was a plant then these folks are not nearly as smart as they have been advertised. Is the theory that this question would cover up the lack of knowledge of the subject by the president?

I’m not normally a big fan of Rush’s show, but I do like seeing him in interviews, where he is a bit less bombastic. His exposure of the liberal media has always been, to my ears, his best subject. He is spot on here. People are realizing that the press has sold the last precious scrap of objectivity it had in order to keep from criticizing Obama.
I keep thinking that Obama’s failures will soon be so overwhelming that they WILL at some point cut ties and start pounding him in order to try to regain some of that credibility. But for as long as I’ve criticized the press’s liberal bias, I have never seen them like they are today, so maybe they’ll continue to prove me wrong.

I agree the Sweet question was a setup. This White House can only pull so many hand grenade pins before they begin exploding in their laps. They set this up, and the president stepped knee deep into it.
Gates pressed to get arrested to give Obama cover for his epic fail on Obamacare. The post mortem exam continues today, Pelosi is bluffing on her vote for next week. The Obama administration does damage control by crying “raacist” to the cops. See how far that gets you champ.

Expect small businesses and fast food restaurants to cut back in the coming months and monthly unemployment numbers to hit a new high by August.

fogw on July 24, 2009 at 9:46 AM
The media won’t be changing any time soon. They don’t know they’re biased. They simply don’t see it. They are surrounded by like-minded folks, and the rare person in their midst who disagrees keeps his mouth shut. I’ve worked in the media, and I can tell you most certainly that they do not even consider the possibility that they are biased. What they believe completely is that they — and Obama — are right, and anyone who disagrees is wrong. Liberalism isn’t an ideology to these people, it is simply the truth, the facts, the reality.
Amnesty? Who but a racist would disagree with that? Nationalized health care? Who but a rich person would disagree with that? Racism running rampant in the streets? No one actually disagrees with that, do they? Lower taxes? Who but a greedy businessperson would support that? Patriotism? What in the world is there to be proud of in this country? Religion? Yeah, I’ve heard about hicks in flyover country who are religious. Aren’t they funny?
The media won’t change because they see nothing to change from. They really do consider themselves “the reality-based community.”
Rational Thought on July 24, 2009 at 9:50 AM
We need a Cable news Channel, similar to Headline News format maybe, that does what Newsbusters.org does basically.

If they have audio of the police officer calmly talking on the radio while Gates is screaming in the background. Game over.
In any case, if this were engineered to distract from healthcare, I don’t think it worked. Sure all the oxygen has been sucked out of the healthcare coverage but the trade off is condemnation by police unions across the country? That doesn’t seem all that shrewd.

anniekc on July 24, 2009 at 10:01 AM
This was not engineered. Shit happens and the players true colors come out. Obama’s soiled stain of sitting in Wright’s pew for twenty years jumped out in front of his brain. The same thing happened with his knee jerk reaction in Honduras.
patrick neid on July 24, 2009 at 10:01 AM
I completely agree…even if this was a ‘set-up’ question, Wright’s disciple stepped into it big-time. Release the tapes, video, have witnesses come forward etc…prove to the public that this was racist elitism on the part of Gates and derail his gravy train and credibility on the matter. Crowley appears supremely confident and dignified…haven’t seen Gates whining on TV since the police report became viral on the net.

Where are all the Rush addicts — on vacation? They’re not in this thread. Except for the now legendary “I want Obama to fail” interview with Hannity, Rush seems to have an exclusive agreement with Greta to broadcast videos from his radio show and phoned-in comments. What is up with that?
Rush has lost a lot of weight and gotten a part-time dog — by way of girlfriend Kathryn — that is cramping his cat Punkin’s style.
Has anyone else noticed a chronic hoarseness in Rush’s voice for the past several months? I’m concerned since he does love the cigars.
Terrie on July 24, 2009 at 10:06 AM
I seriously doubt this is the scenario we are going to see. I think the print media is going to look to their child to bail THEM out, which I believe Obama will do for two reasons.
1. Obama then controls their message directly.
2. Obama will give the media execs bonuses along with a fat retirement package, in exchange for control. Then suddenly we’ll see a lot of media execs taking an early retirement.
If the execs try to hang in, hoping for renewed credibility by turning on their creation, they know they risk losing a slew of liberal subscribers. I think they’ll take the deal and let the papers fall under the public sector, the last bastion of liberalism. We already have national public radio… why not national public newspapers, untainted by an evil profit motive?
I don’t think it will fly in the end, Americans may have elected Obama, but they’re not stupid, the majority is already quickly getting wise that the media didn’t inform the public about how radical Obama would be… instead, the media told everyone that Obama, if anything, was a moderate.
I think Obama will think a takeover of the print media will be a successful coup for him, but it won’t be; Americans, by and large, do NOT want a radical controlling their lives, while Obama actually thinks they DO!

I don’t get to watch or hear Rush, ever, because I rdie a motorcycle to and from work every day. What few times I have heard him over the last 9 or 10 yrs, I have pretty much agreed with everything he says. But he has never been more laser focused on the Truth than in this clip.
I despise the Goebbels propagandists who work in almost every single media outlet in the country. Joseph Goebbels and Vladimir Lenin could not have designed a more perfect organ for brainwashing half the population of the Free World thant those who follow the lead of the NY Times, Washington Post, NBC, CNN, CBS, and the Dhimmicratic money men who fund them and direct their donations.
When the vast majority of the press is in the government’s pocket, spouting only one political agenda and demonizing every person affiliated with the other party, without a single dime having to change hands to do it, then you know the brainwashing of the media organ has been completed.
….. and we were there to observe it, and did nothing but complain! We got what we deserved because we refused to call lies what they were and demand retractions of falsehoods proven to be false. We failed to defend ourselves.
When you won’t fight back…… that is losing. And the Truth and only the Truth, will fix that.

I’ve actually just called my rep and about seven or eight other Blue Dog reps. My question is–what weight do congress members give to phone calls from outside their own districts? I was making all these calls and I thought “why on earth does Congressman Spinkelfink care about my opinion if I’m not even from their own state and can’t vote for them?”
I know phone calls from their own constituents can make a difference, but I’m not so sure why a phone call from a Rhode Islander to a Congressperson in Indiana is going to make a difference.
A thousand conservatives from Wyoming could call my flamingly blue rep and it wouldn’t matter a fig to him, he’s still going to vote blue because of his constituencey. The thousand conservatives from Wyoming would have just wasted their time.
If someone can convince me why to call someone other than my own rep, I’ll keep calling the reps on my Blue Dogs list. Otherwise–I’m not sure what good it’s doing. I’m not saying it to be defeatist, I just want to make sure I’m doing something effective.

I wonder about that sometimes, too. But, when a legislator is on a committee that’s crafting or approving or killing a bill that affects everyone in the country, I believe that they have a duty to all citizens, not just their own constituency. Otherwise, the effect of the committees would be like picking 7 or 8 states to decide national issue. I don’t know how the legislators view it, but I think they need to remember that, in committee, they are representing ALL of us.
Plus, when emailing from their dot gov websites, I will frequently use their own local address and zip code to get around their “constituents only” rule. If they don’t bother to read the legislation they vote for, they surely are not vetting addresses for emailed comments!

People need to stop referring to the media as the “mainstream” media because they aren’t any longer.
Using the word “mainstream” even in mocking fashion gives them credibility they don’t deserve. Even Rush’s “drive by” media nickname doesn’t go far enough.
It needs to be drilled into every American’s head just how badly the media has abrogated their responsibilities to the Republic.

The new minimum wage will knock out another 10% of hiring that might have taken place. That means workers will really have to hustle for that extra 70 cents per hour. On an 8 hour shift that is a whole $5.60 per day. That will probably be eaten up by higher taxes anyway…

Rush has lost 200 lbs in the last month. He accomplished this by running wind sprints from dusk to dawn, living in a sweat lodge and sticking to a strict diet of parsley flakes. Hope this clears up any confusion.

Agreed, I prefer the “Old Moldy Media”, which just sit around and say “Ommmmm” whenever The One speaks.

Lie, and say you are from their district and using your cell phone with an out-of-area area code. Libtards do this sort of thing routinely.

congress idjits talk to ea. other. their staffers in particular talk to ea. other. they will talk about how everyone is angry, regardless of district. the word will get around.
