Video: Police union demands an apology from Obama, Patrick
posted at 1:36 pm on July 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Does the union for the Cambridge police department read Hot Air? That was the first reaction from College Politico, who thought that their response to Barack Obama’s nationally-televised criticism of them as stupid amply demonstrated the ignorance of the issue that Obama professed. The union demanded an apology from both President Obama and Governor Deval Patrick for jumping to a very public conclusion, and they argue, the wrong one:
I’ve remarked at least twice on the blog that if you have to start off a sentence with “I wasn’t there and I don’t have all the facts,” the only correct conclusion to it is “so I have nothing to say about it at the moment.” Did they read that here? Actually, I rather doubt it. It’s pretty much a common-sense rule, which makes Obama’s failure to understand it quite indicting.
Update: That point applies equally to all sides, actually. I don’t know that Sergeant Crowley handled this properly; I don’t know whether Henry Gates was so disruptive that he had to be arrested; and even if Crowley didn’t handle this properly (which I also don’t know), I have even less knowledge of whether that came from some racial animus or just bad judgment in reaction to verbal abuse. In that situation, it’s better to let the city complete its own investigation to determine what happened — which is exactly what Barack Obama and Deval Patrick should have done before leaping to conclusions on all of these counts.

Blowback

How many times was O asked “wtf were you thinking?”
He wasn’t .That is too often the problem.

BTW, William F. screwed up somewhere or son Christopher wouldn’t have voted for NObama so eagerly.
Also, do some reading about how WFB cut his own grandson (Christopher’s illegitimate child) out of his will explicitly, I assume because he disliked the child’s mother.
Buckley wasn’t that great a guy, no matter what you or Rush say, so to say that WFB would snort at us with derision doesn’t phase me (He was a snob!)
He may have schooled Goldwater, Reagan and even Rush, but they put Conservatism in a lot more attractive and accessible form than he was.
And I don’t trust NRO–cancelled my subscription some years ago because their writing staff is full of squishy moderates.
Jenfidel on July 24, 2009 at 4:59 PM
So, we all must have just imagined it when the head of the Montcalm County, NJ police union said that in their next contract negotiations they’d be asking for professional courtesy of traffic stops for spouses and family members of LEOs.
Also, all the cops who have defended giving other cops a break on traffic stops saying that all professions extend some kind of professional courtesy, well, they must have been lying.

Was equality banned today? She suddenly disappeared in the thick of things, or was she scheduled to run the fryer at Mickey D’s 2nd shift? Last I heard from her was in the Albright thread where she admitted she was ashamed to be an American.

How do we not know of some thieves were not in fact in the house when all this went down? Heck it would not surprise me if the prof went and found stuff missing and is now too embarrassed to admit it. More likely though he just wanted a chance to prove his life’s work right.
CWforFreedom on July 24, 2009 at 5:10 PM
Lack reading comprehension, do you? I said that I can say whatever I want to, as long as no other criminal or civil laws are being broken. Freedom of speech is not absolute. Verbal abuse, as long as it stays on this side of assault is protected speech. Libel is not protected speech.
I realize that nuance makes binary folks nervous.
rokemronnie on July 24, 2009 at 5:10 PM
I see that hard questions make you not only nervous but also very silent on issues that really matter in this thread.

See Obama’s moon slink down in the sky
Every dream he spins you is a lie
Here’s the one bitter lesson of Obama’s history
His foul soul should no longer be a mystery
His many faces change
What you thought you knew grows ever more strange
And he has so many faces
His real self often erases
With all those lies dancing in his eyes!

Hmmm even the black officer on the scene as well as a whole group of non-white officers have come out in support of the officer. Seems to me that this officer’s history supports the fact that he is a good and honorable man. Too bad far too many people side with a man who has made race his “occupation”.

Obama respects Cambridge cops, from WND:
According to the Somerville Times in 2007, as a Harvard Law School student, Obama got 17 parking tickets during 1989-1991 from the Cambridge Police Department that he left unpaid until just weeks before he announced his bid for the presidency.
“In other words, as a practicing lawyer in Chicago, he allowed these tickets and penalties to remain unpaid; as an Illinois state senator he allowed these tickets and fines to remain unpaid; and as a United States senator he allowed these almost-two-decade-old signs of his disdain for the law to remain unpaid,” commented John LeBoutillier on Newsmax.com.
The Washington Post said two years ago that the tickets included parking without a proper permit and parking in a bus stop.
The Associated Press reported in 2007 that Obama’s “healthy stack” of parking tickets was finally paid, including late fees, “two weeks before he officially launched his presidential campaign.”
Said Jen Psaki, spokeswoman for Obama’s campaign during his race to the White House, “He didn’t owe that much and what he did owe, he paid. … Many people have parking tickets and late fees.”

You lose the bet.
Haven’t smoked any pot in a while? Like the New Riders sang,
Ev’ry year along about this time it all goes dry.
Fair skinned, but have a decent tan because I cycle a lot. I’m of Middle Eastern origin and don’t identify with European culture.
Live in the suburbs, but don’t have a problem with cities. If I had my druthers and lots of money, I’d have a place in the UP and some kind of Shabbat apartment or home down here.
No iPhone. I admire Apple’s product design – really intuitive and clever, but I’m not a member of the Apple Cult/Steve Jobs Fanclub. I use a simple Motorola 315. No video, no 3G, no apps. I can be a bit of a retrogrouch. I like technology but there’s no need to switch to new if old works just fine. I have a tubed Fisher FM tuner and still use my dad’s 45 year old circular saw.
Alpha? Beta? Who cares? I’m secure in my manhood. Had a bar mitzvah, fathered and raised children.
While I know how to steam milk and make cappuccino, that’s just because my ex likes coffee and I learned how to run the espresso gizmo. I’m not a coffee drinker nor brewer. I think I’ve been to Starbucks maybe twice in my life.
Big time fail on that bet. Maybe 1/2 a point out of a possible six.

BO is the biggest of all the fails and since you condone what he said and are actually defending Gates and BO while at the same time the rest of the country (including his black partner) are defending the Officer, that makes your fail a fail of stratospheric proportions.

Anyone see Gibbs completely avoid the reporter’s question about how the questions are screened beforehand and that Obama had time to think of his response beforehand?

Here I am pointing out the officers of different races support the officer yet Ronnie is digging up 2 hour old posts. I have pointed out that the Prof did in fact follow the officer. I have noted that the idiots have not addressed the fact that for all the Prof knew a burglar may have been in the house when he arrived home. I see however these issues matter not. Ronnie would rather address: “I bet you he is a pot smoking, pasty white, city dwelling, IPhone using, beta-male barista in a place were lots of people who write get their coffee.” Seems you are a little thin skinned Ronnie aka king of the bloviators.

I cannot imagine on what basis you make that statement.
Having actually seen WFB interact with hundreds of people, young and old, from almost every social stratum, I can tell you he was anything but snobbish.
I still subscribe to NR, but I do feel it hasn’t been as sharp since WFB – and especially since John O’Sullivan – stepped away from the helm.
Say what you like about WFB, but it’s impossible to imagine an American conservative movement over the past 60 years.

Well, last night, while we all slept, a United States Border Patrol Agent was shot to death while tracking illegal aliens/drug smugglers outside of Campo, California.
While we argue the pissing match between a racist Harvard professor and the police union, can we say a prayer for this brave agent, Robert Rosas, who was a three year veteran of the patrol and is survived by his wife, his two year old son, and 11 month old daughter. Those that don’t pray, please call your government representatives and demand that they finally support the US Border Patrol and help them secure the border. It is time.

“This Harvard professor is a black racist who believes that he is not subject to the same laws that the rest of us are subject to. He is the racist – not the cop for enforcing the law and doing the job he has been hired for – to investigate a reported crime.”

Are we all so sure that the tapes will be released? The one union official said they support Crowley 100%, and Gates can be heard screaming in the background as Crowley is trying to radio into his command that everything seems to be OK and that Gates is the occupant of the house. So, I am just a little skeptical that the tapes won’t be labeled as “inconclusive” or something similar and disappear forever. Sorry, I didn’t grow up cynical, just grew into it naturally in the past 2 years or so.

One of the first lessons I taught the young officers assigned to me was to observe the behavior of people. If their behavior was out of sync with the situation it should raise a red flag.
When an officer acts in a professional and courteous manner but, the subject responds in an overly emotional, confrontational way, it’s a safe bet that they are exposing some of their own emotional baggage.
Observing Prof. Gates’ reaction and the immediate use of the race card reveals a lot about him. For a college professor to behave like an immature ghetto snipe it does not speak highly of his stability. Do Harvard professors need “street cred”?
walkingboss on July 24, 2009 at 6:40 PM
No, you accused ALL police of violating rights. So I guess that would include me. You also inferred that I’m using the city’s computer to go online. Baseless and pointless. You said most posters here can’t comprehend nuance (John Kerry would be proud), but you’re condescending tone throughout was more than enough to allow for the view that you feel you are more intelligent than others here. Hence my use of the word “inferences.”
But feel free to worry about my qualifications as a witness.
By the way, I never said you were thin-skinned. Just that you needed to get over yourself. I stand by that comment.

Unless you’re stupid, you should be able to find the sites I write for, since I mentioned them by name. Certainly one of your buddies here has already tried fucking with my job at PJM, which is a hoot since they know they are paying an opinionated guy for his opinion. My editor there forwarded it to me along with a note reminding me to send in my invoice so I can get paid. He’s got no problem with me based on my actions here.
So when the left tries to destroy Joe The Plumber that’s heinous (and it truly is) but when you authoritarians try to fuck with someone’s job, that’s just fine.
Messing with someone’s job has been considered bad nettiquette since the early days of the net.
Oh, and preemptively, checking an IP address to see if public employees are playing online on taxpayers’ time is not fucking with someone’s job. It’s called being a whistleblower on corruption. In any case, I just said to check the IP, not to contact his boss.

Only if they’re corrupt or tolerate corrupt cops. According to Jack Dunphy, a cop who writes for National Review, most cops, 80% he says, aren’t good cops.
Even though I may despise someone for their current behavior (like some Democrats), I thank them for their service, as I do all veterans.
What someone does today doesn’t diminish the value of what they did yesterday. It may tarnish their character a little, though.

Know any cops who would cross a FOP or PBA picket line?
Speaking of the FOP, why do police unions sell those stickers to people to put on their cars? There’s no implication that if they have a FOP support sticker on their car they might get a break during a traffic stop, is there? I’m skeptical that they work, it’s just a

We all have bad days. We’ve all said some things that in retrospect were unfair; for Professor Gates to continue to claim racial profiling when in fact it probably wasn’t (based on the multiple witnesses)only diminishes his complaint.

It’s interesting that you had to do a reverse thesaurus search to find the slimmest sliver of an excuse. Well, this tool is showing that GWB was actually a humble man. Barack Obama is illuminating that fact with each passing day.

Yes, I read the article. He also said it applies to businesses. Yet you used it to say “most cops, 80% he says, aren’t good cops.”
Having not met all cops or even a significant percentage, I don’t think I would be qualified to make an accurate assessment for any of your questions. Of the ones I’ve met, Dunphy’s assessment seems out of whack. Of course, I am less apt to make broad, generalizing statements than some people.

Did someone, besides you, say that you requested them for yourself?
Dave742 disagreed with you openly and you suggested/requested/demanded/wished-upon-a-star for his IP address. Whether his posts were accurate or not, you have acted similarly prior to today. That was all that was said.

Why dont we just come out and say it. Obama is a bigot!
What came out of his mouth was the Rev Wright stuff!
It always amazes me that the emphasis is on the policeman.
If a white policeman arrests a black man, he is assumed to be a bigot , guilty until proven innocent! Isnt that what Obama was saying?
But , if the President says that a white policeman is racial profiling ( insinuating he is a bigot ), he is never accused of being the bigot himself. The President owes everyone an apology, and then he should resign! We do not need a bigot as the President, black or white!

Another fine reader. I made it explicitly clear that free speech rights are not absolute and that there are civil and criminal laws controlling speech, so your “law or no law” is, well a lie.
I haven’t tried to silence anyone, just informed them that their actions were conceivably libelous and notified the site managers. I have no power to silence anyone since I don’t run this site. As I said, nobody on my side of this debate has said STFU. You can’t say the same.
What customers? Ken Kurtz is not my customer, just some guy who likes to make trouble for people who never did him any harm.
My customers pay me. Heck, Kurtz probably never reads that site. Even if he did, he still wouldn’t be one of my customers. I don’t work for the people who read those sites, I work for the people who publish those sites.
If there’s any analogy between cops and writers, the analogous group to taxpayers would be advertisers, not readers. The analogy, though, is a poor one because the official chain of command of the police ends up with elected officials who are accountable to the taxpayers. There is no official link between advertisers and writers.
You want to organize a boycott of PJM and TTAC advertisers because of little ol’ me? Gei gezunterhei.

If 80% of the employees of any organization don’t do much work, yeah, I’d say they weren’t good employees whether they were cops, autoworkers or nuns. I’m sure Dunphy wouldn’t agree, but then I think Dunphy is a bit of wuss for using a pseudonym. Not a complete wuss, mind you, he does have some danger on his job, but definitely too concerned about his salary and his pension to speak openly.

Refreshing to see you admit you inaccurately paraphrased what he said. Too bad you had to follow it by calling him a wuss.

Concerning job safety, cops have nowhere near the most dangerous jobs in this country. Garbagemen take greater risks.
Deaths per 100K workers:
Fishers and related workers – 111.8
Loggers – 86.4
Pilots and Flight Engineers – 66.7
Iron and Steel Workers – 45.5
Farmers and Ranchers – 38.4
Roofers – 29.4
Electrical Power Line Installers and Repairers – 29.1
Drivers (truckers and salespeople) – 26.2
Refuse and Recyclable Material Collectors – 22.8
Police and Sheriff’s officers – 21.4

This is known as Moving The Goalposts.
You FAIL, Rokemronnie.

I didn’t inaccurately paraphrase anything. I interpreted his remarks how I saw them. As I said, I’m sure he’d put a different spin on his figures.

Shabbat Shalom everyone. The day of rest approaches. It’s been load of fun, really. Quite an education.
Have a good Shabbas!

You have made it explicitly clear over the past few days that you consider disturbing the peace by shouting at a cop to be absolutely protected speech, law or no law.
Right. You told them you could sue their ass and told the people with the delete button, not that they be intimidated or silenced, but that they could keep on keepin’ on.
Of course I wouldn’t. I expect you to STFU.
