Video: Obama blames the media for making a big deal about Gates comment

posted at 12:15 pm on July 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Well, that’s what happens when a President puts his foot in his mouth at the prime-time press conference he himself demanded.  Fox News reporter Mike Emanuel tells Megyn Kelly that the new word out from Robert Gibbs is that Barack Obama is mystified about why the media would consider it a big deal when he accuses a local police department of acting “stupidly” in a case where he admitted he didn’t have all the facts.  In other words, Obama is blaming the media for covering his remarks, even though they were televised live to over 28 million people (via Patrick Hynes):

Makes Rush Limbaugh’s comment about Obama being the media’s Waterloo even more prescient, doesn’t it?  If nothing else, this should wake up the White House press corps to Obama’s ever-present impulse to lay the blame on someone else — anyone else — for his own missteps.

The first rule of holes: stop digging.  Obama should just apologize for reaching a conclusion on national TV without having the facts, and let the matter drop entirely.  Instead, Obama will likely let the weekend news cycle bury the controversy.  Will the media let him get away with blaming them?  I predict … heartache, to quote my esteemed blogging partner.

That’s the new racist angle that you will see in the media. They will lay off of the police but attack the neighbor that called in the potential burglary.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on July 24, 2009 at 1:04 PM

Yeah. One of the democrat tools just pulled that argument out on Fox. He said that it was the neighbor’s racism that caused him to call 911 when he knew that the owner was breaking into his own house. What a load of cr@p. America won’t buy that, as most of us used to pray that our neighbors would call the police if they saw someone trying to break into our house.

The left are digging themselves a very deep hole on this and they are going to push the racist angle as much as they can, because they have nothing else and they have to divert from the racial grievance mongering of Gates and The Precedent. They are going to push until this nation explodes, because that is what they do.

See. That’s their whole motive. They have to, by necessity, keep stirring the racial soup. It’s the only way to maintain the voting bloc. Remember, with these statists, it is all about achieving and preserving control and power. The best way to do that is to argue and instill that one group of individuals is inferior to another and that this perceived inferiority must be remedied by all means necessary.

Forget about Gates, this guy should be apologizing for his entire term in office, from the day he blew $250 million on his coronation (and it’s been straight downhill from there).

The best way to apologize would be to offer his resignation. He is clearly out of his league and more and more people are facing this simple fact.

farright on July 24, 2009 at 1:22 PM

I guess he does have a major racial problem. Up until now, non-racism was one of the three plusses I felt forced to give him. To paraphrase a commenter who posts on here put it on another thread-the racial genie is out of the bottle and it ain’t going back in no matter what. Some things follow a pol around his whole political life and this remark falls into that category. It might drop out of sight for a time, but it will surely re-surface again and again. We got your number O—-!

hear, hear!

But, The Precedent would never do that, since he wants to destroy this nation. He has never been out for anything other than to exact revenge on whites, the successful, and the West, in general. He made this clear when he explained his position on captial gains taxes, that he was more concerned with bringing pain to certain people than anything else – even to the extent of restricting governmental receipts if the taxes hurt the right people.

BadgerHawk on July 24, 2009 at 1:26 PM

ugh. They actually think people will buy into it? Someone shouldn’t call the cops when they see someone breaking into a home because said person is black?

When I worked the hotel desk I had to call the cops a hundred times, and every time, the dispatcher asked for the age, gender and race of the suspect.

I fail to see how this was “profiling”. Two men who happen to be black shoved down a front door. Somebody saw them and told police two black men were shoving down a door. The police go to the address and meet the two black men who were seen shoving down the door, inside the door, and confront them about shoving down the door. What’s the dispute?

The MA association of police unions is asking for an apology from Ogabe, and from the idiot governor and lame-o mayor who also jumped the gun and made inappropriate statements.

juliesa on July 24, 2009 at 1:31 PM

This incident should be seen within the larger context of police brutality. The silver lining here’s that Professor Gates wasn’t gunned down in a hail of 41 or 50 shots. But it should shudder us all to the bone; that that could have easily happened.

Obama’s cultists are lapping this up

Knucklehead on July 24, 2009 at 1:24 PM

Yeah, and it’s going to get ugly. This will not be solved cleanly, though the dems were never going to let the US get off without serious pain, anyway. They have been apologizing for the US all over the place and making us pay in blood was always part of their idea. The Precedent thinks we are guilty of something (lots of things in his simple and demented mind) and must pay a heavy price, while the self-hating white guilters who support him also think we are guilty of all sorts of nastiness and are looking to make this nation atone in blood. People are realizing that this is the path they have put us on.

Barack Obama is mystified about why the media would consider it a big deal when he accuses a local police department of acting “stupidly” in a case where he admitted he didn’t have all the facts. In other words, Obama is blaming the media for covering his remarks, even though they were televised live to over 28 million people

A President is suppose to be the “President of all the People”. Not the “Black’s President” anymore than the “White’s President”. Not the “Ivy league’s” President” anymore than the “Cop’s President”.

A President should instinctively realize that calling individuals, and even more so groups, and particularly his own country’s citizens, stupid is way beneath the dignity of his office or pretty much any office for that matter.

A President is suppose to make his remarks contingent on facts and reasoning, not on which side he feels strong emotional empathy (aka, prejudice) for and against.

The equivalent of a 5 or 6 start General (CIC) should not even be getting involved in a relatively minor dispute between the equivalent of a couple of privates.

Barack Obama is mystified because he is seriously emotionally immature as well as being profoundly morally defective and substantially mentally unbalanced.

capejasmine on July 24, 2009 at 1:58 PM

Barack Obama has two very distinctive personalities at the same time right now in the present and in my channeling sessions with him he goes back and forth between the two. He doesn’t seem to be able to make up his mind which he wants to be. I have named the one personality Homie Obama and the other Squire Obama.

Homie Obama is an angry Black man who found his soul mate in Michelle the angry hate America Black woman of his dreams and in Jeremiah Wright the God damn America and curse all things whitey firebrand mentor he had been searching for.

Squire Obama on the other hand is an upper class elitist white liberal in the John Kerry mode who really very much wanted to marry a rich white woman and only married Michelle instead as he needed to establish his Black cover and sought out Jeremiah Wright simply to gain his Black credentials or in the vernacular “creds”.

This is making treating him most difficult as it is most vexing to determine if he is coming or going, an upper class elitist white liberal very much in the mode of John Kerry or an angry ghetto Black man. Fortunately I am given to understand that someone who comments on this very board is something of an expert on what I call the Squire Obama persona. I believe his initials are JD, so I will endeavor to concentrate my future efforts on treating Homie Obama and hopefully Doctor JD can concentrate on Squire Obama.

At my advanced age and state of decomposition I can hardly be expected to treat both of Barack Obama’s contradictory personalities especially with the complicating factor of the pronounced pyromaniac characteristic emerging in both of his split personalities.

I think this whole incident may hurt Obama more significantly than pundits expect and more than poll respondents will admit.

Obama’s candidacy was premised, in part, on his promise of “post-racial” politics. Here was a black candidate that seemed “safe,” “acceptable” and “reasonable,” with a Harvard pedigree and a calm, mellifluous baritone. (Compare with Republicans’ flirtation with the similarly “safe,” “acceptable” and “reasonable” Colin Powell in 1996, and contrast with the off-putting candidacies of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.) The vast non-racist majority of white Americans, desperately seeking that post-racial future, were attracted by Obama’s race combined with his faux moderation. They wanted to be able to vote for a black candidate to help put the past behind us.

Obama’s response to the Gates incident — immediately assuming the worst about a white police officer, immediately taking the side of a hysterical scholar of racism, and lecturing the American people on our failure to overcome our benighted past — suddenly cast into doubt Obama’s post-racial identity.

Is he, after all, one of them? One of those blacks who sees racism in every issue or disagreement? One of those blacks who strikes fear in the hearts of well-meaning, non-racist whites because he might, at any moment, accuse them of being racists because of some imagined slight? Were the associations with Rev. Wright not innocuous after all? The comment about the “typical white person” grandmother? Michele’s lack of pride in America?

Obama erred. He realizes this now. He’ll be more careful in the future. He is, after all, a great salesman, a consummate dissembler, a magnificent fraud.

But the mask slipped. We got a peek behind the post-racial facade.

It wasn’t pretty.

And some of those well-meaning, non-racist whites may be saying: This is not the Barack Obama I thought I knew.

Bicyea on July 24, 2009 at 2:21 PM

Things are going to start to get really interesting since Obama has placed himself in a role for which he has longed for ever since he was a boy…the role of the aggrieved.

One common thread appears throughout Obama’s life…all his role models and all of his close associations are with those who act out based on their perceptions of being aggrieved or wronged (by guess who).

The country is going to be learning alot about Obama as a result of all this though his behavior. They’re going to be learning things some of us have already known.

First of all, I am concerned about the welfare of this Officer Crowley. His face has been all over the media and I think it will make it almost impossible to do his job and make him a target for militant blacks.

Second, I think this could backfire on Obama. Well, he wanted an honest discussion about race, so let’s have it. I have no doubt that his words were prepared in advance, and it proves once and for all that he indeed was listening and believes the racist bile spewed by the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. However, I think that there are a lot of people who are sick and tired of reverse racism. It’s just like the Ricci case where whites were discriminated against. Their case is just one of dozens out there where racial quotas have been used to discriminate against white Anglo-Saxon Protestant males who don’t get hired/promoted, even though they may be better qualified, just because the quota for whites has already been filled. And yet despite the racial quotas of affirmative action and despite all of the gains made by minorities and the financial aide as part of the Great Society, they still play the race card when convenient. You want a level playing field? Fine. No more affirmative action. No more welfare. You want to get ahead? Keep your butt in school. Stay off drugs. Get a job based on your own merit, not your skin color and racial quotas. Still can’t get ahead? Tough s***. Take responsiblilty for yourself and your own actions. Slavery ended 144 years ago. Nobody alive had anything to do with it and nobody alive lived it. 360,000 Union soldiers gave their lives to help end it. It’s time to get over it and move on.

How about some questions for The Precedent regarding his traitorous AG Holder and the illegal dismissal of charges against the Black Panthers, who were clearly committing voter intimidation – and proudly so.

Holder should have been forced to resign the day he made his moronic “nation of cowards” comment, but his abuse of power to help the Black Panthers is far beyond the pale and warrants nothing less than his removal and subsequent investigation into his abuse of power for racial purposes.

progressoverpeace on July 24, 2009 at 2:30 PM

… Instead, Obama will likely let the weekend news cycle bury the controversy. Will the media let him get away with blaming them?

This story isn’t going to die of neglect. Obama could still end it by issuing a vague apology about speaking without having all the facts at hand — but he won’t. He is constitutionally incapable of admitting error.

This will cost him a lot more than many suspect, from a lot of people who might otherwise be inclined to support him.

hawksruleva on July 24, 2009 at 3:00 PM

Forgive me if someone has already mentioned this, but I thought the “stupidly” part of Ogabe’s remarks wasn’t the most interesting thing.

What I thought was especially telling about his mindset was when he said, “Of course, any of us would have been angry…” to find a policeman at our door.

With that, our post-racial President was speaking to blacks, while assuming that everyone has a chip on his shoulder about police.

Everything in this guy’s agenda is about his racial resentments.

Well, Barry, YOUR chickens are coming home to roost.

I understand your confusion and hurt though Mr. Precedent. All your political life the media has covered up and spun your failures as a legislator, as a leader and as a human being. And when they allow you to ‘let you be yourself’ on live TV, and it goes wrong for you, it is ‘their fault’.

And besides that, you have always been taught that when you call someone with a low skin concentration of melanin a racist, regardless of the facts, they are supposed to cower and apologize for being white. Unfortunately for you, there are a few people left in this world who still know who and what they are, and they won’t go under the bus for your greater glory.

Obama blames the MEDIA? His best friends with tingly legs on the verge of Obasm on his every words? What if they want revenge after he disses them?

Wednesday night’s presser was supposed to be about health care. Obama never called on any Fox News reporters, so he probably knew the questions everyone wanted to ask. He probably knew that Lynn Sweet wanted to ask about the Gates arrest, which could have remained a minor incident relegated to the back pages of the Boston Globe if Obama hadn’t called on Sweet at the presser.

But long experience has taught Obama: when you’re backed into a corner, play the race card. ObamaCare hasn’t been playing too well in Congress lately, so it’s time to play the race card before 28 million people on TV. Then blame the media if cops in deep-blue Mass don’t like being called stupid.

If the “media” turn on him, Obama’s in BIG trouble.

Hell, he doesn’t even read the bills/laws that he’s signing.

Hell, he didn’t even know what was written in the Executive Orders that he felt compelled to sign shortly after his inauguration.

This whole thing could have been avoided if the house was broken into by a couple of white guys wearing masks like you always see in the burglar alarm ads.

guntotinglibertarian on July 24, 2009 at 7:36 PM

What a JERK!

I just heard Obama say that he DISAGREED with “some who” think that it isn’t his business to involve himself in local affairs.

FOLLOWED by him saying it is a “teachable moment” that people should get along better!

How about a teachable moment for him not to be such an unprofessional, illogical, knee-jerk racist ass!!!

And his brain-dead supporters on forums are busy saying, “Oh, yes, he handled it just right. He’s so smart, so honest, blah blah.” I would be surprised if these people could even balance their checkbooks.

ALINSKY RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it. Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions.

That’s horrifying. I’d rather lose than win with tactics like that.

Guess I can rule out a career in community organizing.

So the bigot President blames the press! Ah, so liberal. Blame everyone else.

jerseyjoe99982002 on July 24, 2009 at 8:27 PM

In Obama’s words, I would say that we now know what is in the White House…………..

“The “Jigger” of the United States!”

He said it, live on TV………….

“If I were to jigger….”

Seven Percent Solution on July 24, 2009 at 9:13 PM

It is not surprising a bit that Barry Sotero is blaming someone else for his stupid, unthoughtful remarks. No matter what situation he finds himself creating. it’s always someone else’s fault.

So, the “post-racial” “President” is a race pimp. Whatta surprise.

Some people are more equal than others………..

FNMA FHLMC To The Rescue!

Since the government controls the real estate im rhe country, they should racially code all homes so that police know how to act (or not act) when an attempted break-in is called in.

It has begun!

Watch as the MSM gradually turns the B.O.Lovefest into a full blown Jimmy Carter-style feeding frenzy.

So how is that tingle in the leg feel now, Chris Matthews?

pilamaye on July 24, 2009 at 12:38 PM

Chrissy has already aired a segment in full support of The One. I believe one of the guests was the woman who asked the question. They launched into a talk about blacks being forced into opening trunks during traffic stops and that all blacks had bad experiences with the police. There may be truth in it. However…

Can somebody do a survey or small book about police experiences with blacks?

IlikedAUH2O on July 24, 2009 at 11:13 PM

This was all about racism — Obama’s & Gates’ racism, that is. But what I can’t understand is why everyone is letting these two get away with characterizing the policeman’s actions as “racial profiling.” Stopping a black guy driving a car in a “white” neighbor when he is obeying all traffic laws is “racial profiling.” Showing up to investigate a reported B&E at a house where a black man happens to live is not “racial profiling.”

Put the blame on Mame, or blame it on the bossa nova, but for god’s sakes Obama, don’t ever blame yourself for the crapola that runs out of your mouth.

betsyz on July 25, 2009 at 12:23 AM

Scene I’d like to see. Thieves clean out that arrogant popinjay Gate’s house to the tune of $250,000 while the police sit and watch. When Gates comes back from vacation and complains the police can say “we thought it was you, professor.”

Memo to the burglars-don’t steal his briefcase all you’d find is a stale ham sandwich and a comic book.

Loxodonta on July 25, 2009 at 2:21 AM

I have been trying to figure out why Obama’s original staged ‘stupidity’ comments at the press conference caused such a public reaction.

After all, he was mentored by Wright and most had heard Wright’s racially inflammatory preaching. Obama’s wife wrote her thesis on what I call blackitude. Black Panthers were given a wrist slap for voter intimidation, while Obama worked his overt snubs of the ‘whitey’ nations

A very perceptive friend has an answer. He said obama normally stayed out of this conversation, even while making calls for a national conversation on race. My friend said this is the first time Obama spoke for himself, instead of using proxies. He was always the friend, the student of, or the husband of the speaker. This time he made the statements and he did it on the record.

That he did it to divert from the National Health debate is no matter. It did divert attention, but the attention became a focus on Obama, who for the first time, stuck it to the man all by himself

Now that hurt. Before this, folks could make Obama whatever they needed him to be. Now he has given himself a hard definition, and it will not go away,

The more he tries to change his story, the more he reinforces the new image

My friend hit the nail on the head. Obama, the man who shot himself in the foot
