Shocker: Ford posts a profit

posted at 7:20 pm on July 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Ford surprised a lot of people, probably no set more than the White House, in posting a quarterly profit of over $2 billion.  The automaker, who eschewed a government bailout, credited better products and management for ending four quarters of losses.  They also grew their market share and lowered their debt load in the middle of the worst recession in decades:

In recent months, the carmaker has claimed market share from its American rivals, General Motors and Chrysler, while those companies struggled to restructure their operations in bankruptcy court.

Ford executives now say the automaker is on track to return to annual profitability in 2011. …

Ford’s gains were aided by rapid cost cutting in the second quarter. Ford reduced its debt obligations by $10.1 billion, which will save the company more than $500 million a year in interest expense. It raised $1.6 billion by issuing common stock. The company said it also cut “structural” costs by $1.8 billion, in part by eliminating 1,000 U.S. hourly jobs through buyouts. …

Under Mulally, Ford appears to be building better cars and trucks, analysts said. The Ford Fiesta, which launches in the United States next year, is now Europe’s second-best-selling car.

That doesn’t mean that Ford is out of the woods, but they’re doing a far sight better than Government Motors and Chrysler.  Instead of delaying inevitable tough decisions by taking a handout from either the Bush or Obama administrations, Ford went to work on the structural problems that had them on the brink of oblivion.    Their turnaround showed that hardnosed cost-cutting and product improvements could rescue a company, rather than a Deus ex machina bailout that would have maintained a sclerotic status quo.

Mullaly also had bad news for the White House in its forecast.  He told analysts that Ford expected the economy to improve a little at the end of the year, but nowhere near earlier forecasts.  If Mullaly is right, the Obama administration will have to deal with much higher deficits than first forecasted — and its investment in Ford’s competition may wind up for naught.

As soon as Ford said “No thanks!” to the handout, I purchased their stock. That bad boy made me a 168% profit in 2 months!

I believe in Ford and it’s products (I own and F150). They are going to come out on top in a couple of years. Once I free up some capital, i’m going to invest in their stock once more.

ayrab on July 24, 2009 at 7:25 PM

Don’t get too excited.

However, excluding its debt reduction and other items, Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford would have reported a quarterly loss, though smaller than Wall Street expected.

They’re doing a lot better than GM (a company I loved but will never again purchase a vehicle from), but they have a long way to go.

BadgerHawk on July 24, 2009 at 7:25 PM

They should do well with the clunker incentives since they have a better group of high mileage care. Plus the Focus and a Volvo were found to be the safest small cars. I wish I could buy some of their stock.

Cindy Munford on July 24, 2009 at 7:26 PM

Good . . . my next truck will be a Ford. I have bought a new Chevrolet pickup every three years for the past 12 years but I told the Chevrolet Motor Division of GM that I would never buy another until General Motors returns to the free market system and dumps the government. I simply will not drive “the peoples car”.

Two of our family cars are Fords. My dad refused to own one in his day, but this is not your father’s Ford — and it’s not big brother’s Ford, either. I expect Ford to become an important symbol of American ingenuity again.

We need to send GM and Chrysler to the Henry Ford Clinic.

Can anyone figure out why any American auto manufacturer would put the fuel filler on the passenger side? That creates more congestion and confusion at the fuel pumps than anything. There is a lot of gas wasted for people juggling around to get at the pumps.

My dad always bought ‘American,’ and those cars fell apart at 100k miles. Perhaps they’re better now, but they still can’t compete with a Honda or Toyota.

jazz_piano on July 24, 2009 at 7:42 PM

Their turnaround showed that hardnosed cost-cutting and product improvements could rescue a company, rather than a Deus ex machina bailout that would have maintained a sclerotic status quo.

that’s a great line–Deus ex machina…

Imagine that–a profit by producing a product that people want, for a good price, that has inherent value. People have
voted with their wallets away from GM and Chrysler–Ford has benefited as a result of that. They’ll continue to do so and the American people, and maybe the politicians, will see their success and learn a valuable lesson.

Good job Ford.

ted c on July 24, 2009 at 7:42 PM

With Gov’t Motors in the game now, the White House can ruin Ford whenever it pleases by having GM sell cars at artificially low prices and making up the difference with (more) subsidies until Ford goes bankrupt.

But there would be no upside (that I can think of), so hopefully this won’t happen.

jazz_piano on July 24, 2009 at 7:45 PM

They’re not out of the woods yet, by any means — remember that their unions OWN their competition. There’s no need even to strike, just consistently put the least qualified workers in Ford plants.

Did you guys read this:

The company said the profit, equal to 69 cents a share, was largely the result of a $3.4 billion gain from debt restructuring.

Excluding that figure and other special items, Ford would have lost $638 million, or 21 cents a share.

And this:

Automotive operations lost $1 billion

I have an 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer (the model that replaced the Mirage in the U.S.) and I bought it used in December of 2003. I pretty much just change the oil in it and that’s it. I got the timing belt replaced after about 120,000 miles, but the guys at the shop were impressed because timing belts usually have to be replaced before that on most cars. I just rolled it over 165,000 miles a couple of days ago and it’s still running like when I first bought it.

I’m pretty much looking at Mitsubishi from now on.

I’m a Honda Technician, I own their cars, and power equipment. I can honestly say that I couldn’t be happier for Ford. That means jobs for Americans, just like Honda and Toyota. My Honda’s were built in Marysville Ohio, My Tundra in Indiana.

My greatest fear, car wise, is that given the gooberment involvement in GM, and Chrysler, they will somehow decide to slant the playing field for other, non-federal, manufacturers.

Ford can all but kiss goodbye to government contracts, they will only own a GM fleet, Chrysler is done. The Imports, especially American made Imports, may suffer future legislation, it’s the Chicago way.

The only reason they are profitable this quarter is that they were able to retire a bunch of debt at a discount to its face value through exchange offers completed during Q2 2009. This was likely due to the panic that ensued because of the bankruptcies of Chrysler and GM. Not long after the debt was exchanged out for a fraction of its face value, Ford debt traded up dramatically (as did a lot of other corporate debt) during May and June.

That being said, the CFO of Ford deserves a gold star, because he was able to de-lever the company significantly without going into bankruptcy, thereby creating a great deal of shareholder value.

Now all they have to do is make better cars than the Japanese, and they will be all set.

Doodad Pro on July 24, 2009 at 9:09 PM

Does Obama’s EPA know about this? I’m sure Ford must be breaking some law to make a profit. Maybe Acorn needs to visit them.

E9RET on July 24, 2009 at 9:11 PM

I’m in the market for a brand new car, right now, as I read this. I can take my time and I will because I want to make the best purchase I can.

Barackus Caesar IS NOT my President. In fact, I loathe the man and his entire administration far more than I ever loathed Peanut Farmer Boy’s presidency.

I have already resolved to my very core that I will NOT by anything from Chrysler or Government Motors. Period. Once Barackus Caesar inserted himself into Chrysler and GM, and started firing and hiring their exec’s, and forcibly took them over, I was out. As long as Barackus Caesar has a hand in ANYTHING I may possibly invest in or purchase, I will not touch it. I will do without before I will buy into Barackus Caesar’s agenda and socialist dream for this country.

So, now I’m debating whether to go Ford, Lincoln, or Toyota/Acura. Democracy and capitalism is still supported through my purchase whether it be Ford, Lincoln, or Toyota/Acura. I just have to decide which vehicle to go with. I’m more heavily leaning Lincoln MKT, but man, I really do like the new Toyota’s and Acura’s.

Regardless, Chrysler/GM are dead to me. Bummer. I’ve always been a Mopar guy since I was a kid.

Funny how that works….

I got a 95 Ford Contour…5 speed manual transmission…gets around 40 mpg….I do think it was actually made in Canada..at least the wiring was…never had any major problems with it…bought it used in 1997 for $8,900. Got 140,000 miles on it now…going to trade it in…I’m not cheer leading for Ford or anything…

But it really wouldn’t bother me a bit if Government Motors went ahead and swirled down the crapper…

Nice ad but that thunderbird is just plain ugly. Thirty miles to the gallon for the falcon? What was Ford thinking?

WE just got home from our latest joy ride in our new F 250 turbo diesel with all the bells and whistles. Bought the bad boy just last Sunday because we just can’t support Government Motors anymore. Sweet, sweet truck!
