Rasmussen: Obama loses majority support
posted at 11:36 am on July 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Rasmussen’s presidential tracking polls detecting slippage in support for Barack Obama first, and now they report that his approval ratings have fallen below 50% for the first time. Driving the indicator, as it has all along, is the departure of independents from the president’s banner. Obama only has a 37% approval rating among unaffiliated voters, which will make his Capitol Hill colleagues even more nervous as Obama’s big-spending plans come up for votes:
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 30% of the nation’s voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-eight percent (38%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -8.
Just 25% believe that the economic stimulus package has helped the economy. …
Overall, 49% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance. Today marks the first time his overall approval rating has ever fallen below 50% among Likely Voters nationwide. Fifty-one percent (51%) disapprove.
It marks the first time that Obama has gone underwater since he started his remarkable run for the presidency in early 2007. Undoubtedly, voters have now put the responsibility for the economy squarely on Obama’s shoulders after six months of worsening indicators. The steep decline in support for his health-care bill represents in part a lack of confidence in his ability to deliver after the failure of the massive stimulus package, which he promised would put America back to work.
Even the Democratic gender gap has mostly been wiped out for Obama. Although crosstabs are not available on daily tracking reports, Rasmussen’s poll shows an approval rating of 51% among women, just two points above the overall average. If Obama had hoped to maintain the traditional Democratic inroads with women with his focus on health care, that appears to have backfired, as the survey on that issue earlier in the week showed women opposing it by a 50%-46% edge, with men more clearly in opposition at 53%-44%. Why? Pluralities among both genders believe that their personal coverage will get worse under ObamaCare.
With that in mind, it will be interesting to watch Rasmussen on Monday and Tuesday next week when the effect from the Obama presser gets absorbed in the polling. Will Obama get a bump just from being on TV? Or will his lackluster and trite presentation of old arguments work against him with the people who are already unhappy with ObamaCare?

I dont’ think he’ll get any bump from the Fantasty Hour. At best, he’ll flatline due to it.
I think the attention storm over the “stupid” cops has effectively drowned out the creative accounting and outright lies and double-speak over health care, which may have indeed been the point. However, the more that is learned about the Cambridge incident, the more people are going to shake their heads and “tsk tsk.”

I think Obama fights this by reinventing himself into Rev. Wright. Which we saw a bit of in that failure of a press conference.
Which will only push his numbers even lower. Barry ran as a centrist, as a charismatic messiah of “hopeandchange”. Morphing into Al Sharpton won’t help his chances of re-election.
I look for Hillary to bail on him soon and start running for the nomination for 2012. I think she could defeat him. Look for Clinton rats to start abandoning the sinking ship very soon.

I’ve figured that was coming ever since she was named to State. Obam’ter was smart linking her to his adminstration, so she isn’t in the Senate stinkin’ up the joint and blocking him.
His numbers and gaffes keep moving in opposite directions, look for her to have a public spat with him, resign in a huff because she can’t compromise her principles and be a part of his dangerous actions or some such, and start firing up the ol’ War Wagon once again.
JamesLee on July 24, 2009 at 11:50 AM
They do that and they are done in 2010 and 2012. No, I don’t see the democrat congress falling on the sword for Barry.
You already are seeing that they won’t do that. It’s the DEMOCRATS who are responsible for shelving cap and tax and Obamacare, the Republicans can’t do a thing to stop anything they wish to do.
Which makes this the perfect storm for the GOP to profit from. IF they don’t repeat the mistakes that lost them power in the first place.

It will be an interesting psychological analysis to see how such a narcissistic person who has had years of such idolation and near-worship without a single life achievement deals with an overall rejection by the public at large. While he will always have his ever-loving followers, how will his type of personality react to suddenly discovering more and more people hate him. It might be a scary reaction.

I’m gonna copy and paste what I posted over in the headlines about Hillary.
Honestly, I don’t see Hillary winning the nomination no matter how low Giggles goes. Carter had heavy primary challenges in 80 and still won the nomination. Ford got challenged by Reagen himself in ‘76 and still prevailed.
No, a Hillary who stayed in the Senate would’ve been a far more dangerous foe for Giggles come 2012. If his numbers keep going down, he’ll drag everyone associated with him down as well – Reid, Pelosi, and Hillary as well. Even if Hillary resigns tomorrow she’ll still be associated with the administration from now on – because she will forever be “Former Secretary of State Clinton.” Giggles keeps polling low, Hillary will be damaged goods as well.

Good point.
It depends on his mental stability.
When your whole world psychologically crashes down on you, anything is liable to happen. He could adjust to the reality and remake himself to adapt to the situation and make a comeback.
Or he could come flying apart at the seams and start acting like Hitler in the bunker, acting out self made delusions and lashing out at his inner circle. He might even become insane enough to send the tanks after his “enemies”.
But you’re right… After being worshiped his whole life, never having to actually work for anything and ascending to the pinnacle with no actual substance, having “The Emperor Has No Clothes” shouted in his face could send him off the cliff.
How would we deal with a mentally insane president?

I hope it’s not because “he’s so dreamy” (gag). Speaking of gagging, I saw a kid at Cedar Point yesterday and he was wearing one of those Obama propaganda looking poster shirts.
