Quote of the day

posted at 10:00 pm on July 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

“In an interview with POLITICO Thursday, the South Carolina Republican defended his decision to back Sotomayor by laying out a broad critique of conservative activists who push ‘ideological purity’ and refuse to cooperate with a Democratic Congress and White House.

‘If we chase this attitude … that you have to say ‘no’ to every Democratic proposal, you can’t help the president ever, you can’t ever reach across the aisle, then I don’t want to be part of the movement because it’s a dead-end movement,’ Graham said.

‘I have no desire to be up here in an irrelevant status. I’m smart enough to know that this country doesn’t have a problem with conservatives. It has a problem with blind ideology. And those who are ideological-driven to a fault are never going to be able to take this party back into relevancy.’”

The RINOs have got to go.

Every last one of them.

Dave R. on July 24, 2009 at 10:04 PM

It’s not about just “saying no to every dem proposal”, it’s about choosing the best person for the job. And from everything I’ve heard about Sotomayor, she’s mediocre at best and a racist at worst.

BTW Graham, the ‘party’ doesn’t get taken back to ‘relevancy’ by bending over for the liberals either. It gets taken back by showing the voters step-by-step logic that actually works while showing them step-by-step why liberal socialism is antithetical to the foundations of this country.

Asswipe.

Oh yes, saying yes to everything the Democrats want has been working out so much better.

Seriously, after the hit the go along to get along Republicans just took in 2008 you’d think they would at least realize that being the ‘nice’ guys isn’t working…

What exactly is the alternative to ideology? Why does it have such negative connotations now?

Ideology comprises our values and ideals, including freedom of speech, freedom of religion, equal protection under the law, justice, truth, etc.

Ideology in itself is not the problem; rotten ideology is the problem.

jazz_piano on July 24, 2009 at 10:21 PM

When a senator makes this his fallback answer, it’s equivalent to “not reading the bill”. If we can’t trust these elected officials to study, review and make judicious decisions, then we are better off running this place on our own. I learned she was incompetent two days into the hearing, it really wasn’t that difficult. You only had to pay attention and do your job, Mr. Graham.

HawkDriver, just be sure to remember these very important rules:

Don’t look conspicuous, it draws fire.

If your attack is going well, then it’s an ambush.

Never draw fire, it irritates everyone around you.

If you build yourself a bunker that’s tough for the enemy to get into quickly, then you won’t be able to get out of it quickly either.

Never forget that your weapon is made by the lowest bidder.

The most dangerous thing in the world is a second lieutenant with a map and a compass.

The enemy never watches until you make a mistake.

If at first you don’t succeed, call in an air strike.

The worse the weather, the more you are required to be out in it.

If enough data is collected, a board of inquiry can prove anything.

Murphy was a grunt.

GarandFan on July 24, 2009 at 10:43 PM

Apparently, Sen. Lindsey Graham does not know that ‘ideology’ is the very definition of political orientation, an orientation based on foundational principles that characterize the thinking of a group or even an entire nation. Abandoning your ideology means abandoning your principles. In fact, it is in his very own words in that very article that he has stated his own ideology, and it is a Defeatocrat one.

RINO’s as ‘fixers’ are part of the GOP’s problem. As long as RINOs are running the GOP as all but Democrat-Socialist Lite, the Republican Party is no more “relevant” than tits on a bull. “Useless” is about as kind a word as I can think of for an opposition party that chooses to enable rather than oppose. It absolutely underscores the argument that the RINOs aren’t opposed to socialism, they just want to ease into it rather than see it implemented quite so quickly. To RINO’s, the re-establishment of the America the Founding Fathers intended is of far far less importance than their own momentary popularity. Just like the nonsense opining talking heads we see on TV when they speak from their wooden thrones in the chambers of Congress, and from the Oval Office for that matter, it’s all about their popularity and keeping themselves on their thrones. Not one iota more.

To paraphrase good ol’ Benjamin Franklin, ‘Those who would abandon principle to achieve power will lose both, and be worthy of neither.’

See ya later bye RINO Lindsey Graham. You abysmal lecherous self-serving scum. I, for one, am sick and tired of you and all the other RINO’s.

Don’t let the door hit you on your big fat RINO butt on the way out.

SilverStar830 on July 24, 2009 at 10:46 PM

Actually the Sotomayor situation is an amusing one. The strongest argument I’ve heard for her is that she isn’t particularly bright. Obama could have picked a much more dangerous leftist for the position, but he was so busy looking at the color of her skin, he had no time to examine the content of her character.

Not that the Republicans could do much to stop her…but the party is holding its ammo because a dull, “wise latina” racist is the best we can hope to get out of Obama. Strange days indeed.

Oh, and on an unrelated note, if the Republicans do need to pander more if we hope to pick up more hispanic votes, how about fighting abortion more seriously? There is a lot Bush, for example, could have done, fully within the “law” as rendered by Roe v Wade, to reduce the number of abortions in America…

Senator, it is not about saying “no” to proposals, it is about your values: right versus wrong. Maybe it is to a point in this country where holding values is inconsistent with serving our general population – the population, you know the one, that elected The One.

It is about saying “no” to taking action that is contrary to the values you supposedly pronounced during your campaign. You did have values, didn’t you? Maybe it’s time to be more concerned about what your values tell you is the right thing to do, than about being the center of adulation at the next Washington cocktail party.

The principles sell themselves, without having to pander to this or that group. Those idiots who think all the GOP has to do is simply out-pander the Democrats are the ones who are the drag.

As for the “reputation for being racists”, that’s going to be there as long as the state-run media have a voice. It’s trying to bend over backwards to erase those harsh, nasty words that create the Lindsey Grahams of the world. It isn’t “Realpolitik”, it’s surrender.

2) Defending our borders from illegal aliens who a large percentage of which come to the USA to commit crimes such as sell drugs, rape women, murder anyone, steal from legal citizens, etc. resulting in 30% of prison inmates being illegal aliens

AYNBLAND on July 24, 2009 at 10:11 PM

Hey look! a wise Latino chimes in. Well one wise latino to another why don’t you tell me what policy proposals will insure the “hispanic” vote?

Hey, I know, maybe we should run a “moderate” that supports amnesty…how bout it genius? Oh wait, that didn’t work out well…lets see maybe we should run a “moderate” that coddles grievance mongers and statist policies…no wait that would be a democrat…enlighten us as to the policies we latinos need to see from the GOP…

The dems have the blue dogs as their mavericks that actually stand up against their own party on principle, and we have Lindsey and the original Maverick.
Makes me want to throw up.

JeffinOrlando on July 24, 2009 at 11:10 PM

Dunno how “blind” it was, but ideology was pretty important to Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Lincoln, etc.

I’d rather follow their model than some career politician who is more interested in winning the right number of votes than actually serving his country with honor and with its best interests at heart.

That is all.

cs89 on July 24, 2009 at 11:12 PM

While Graham panders to one group to be “relevant,” I distinctly recall him snubbing another… Hmm… Which one was that…

Upstater85 on July 24, 2009 at 11:14 PM

Hey Gramnesty, what have the dems ever done for you? I’m telling you, the most important thing in this guys life is to hear his own voice. SC, get with the program for God’s sake, find someone who wants to hear YOUR voices…..

PaCadle on July 24, 2009 at 11:15 PM

I sent this tweet to Michelle Malkin and tips@hotair.com the night she tweeted it.

My response, and the response of many, is that we are GLAD that Meghan McCain and her dad and Grahamnesty DO NOT CONSIDER US TO BE PART OF THEIR FAMILY.

Thank you Meghan! You RINOs are you own damn family, not part of ours. Thank Jesus Christ for this being made clear!

JaqobJackson on July 24, 2009 at 11:03 PM

Now, now Meghan McCain is a nice girl that we all misunderstand

People of South Carolina,
How long will you put up with this guy? Vote him and all RINO’s out!

Christian Conservative on July 24, 2009 at 11:19 PM

Just to emphasize this point, the GOP can hold Sotomayor in committee and not allow her to get to a floor vote, if they had the guts and brains to do it.

From the rules for the senate judiciary committee:

IV. BRINGING A MATTER TO A VOTE

The Chairman shall entertain a non-debatable motion to bring a matter before the Committee to a vote. If there is objection to bring the matter to a vote without further debate, a roll call vote of the Committee shall be taken, and debate shall be terminated if the motion to bring the matter to a vote without further debate passes with ten votes in the affirmative, one of which must be cast by the minority.

Sotomayor only makes it to the SCOTUS if the GOP allows her, and if they do they are the biggest morons on the planet.

Forty-five minutes later and my post still isn’t appearing.

I knew it.

We need the left of center republicans like Graham to help win over the indies /sarc

Upstater85 on July 24, 2009 at 11:23 PM

“In an interview with POLITICO Thursday, the Nutless Wonder defended his decision to back Sotomayor by laying out a broad critique of conservative activists who push ‘ideological purity’ and refuse to cooperate with a Democratic Congress and White House

.

rollthedice on July 24, 2009 at 11:24 PM

Replace Steele and we might be able to make this Graham jump to the Democrats. We get him as the worst case scenario when that senate seat come up for reelection next time and it’s more than likely he will lose to a conservative in that election.

Republicans just don’t know how to do basic…smart things.

Buddahpundit on July 24, 2009 at 11:26 PM

My ideology is not blind. It is as informed as, if not better informed than, the one the Democrats have foisted upon us, and which Mr. McCain now proceeds to buttress.

If we truly behaved as McCain suggests, slavery would still be present in America, because us Republicans would have come half way.

Is Sotomayor a choice McCain would have made for that vacant seat? If not, he needs to consider why. If so, he’s in the wrong party.

unclesmrgol on July 24, 2009 at 11:29 PM

Opie and the Judge….

d1carter on July 24, 2009 at 11:30 PM

Whoops, meant Graham, not McCain. Wonder why I made that mistake?

unclesmrgol on July 24, 2009 at 11:30 PM

And those who are ideological-driven to a fault are never going to be able to take this party back into relevancy.

But, evidently, those “ideological-driven to a fault” CAN wind up on the Supreme Court.

Seriously, Lins. You gots da brain damage or somethin’?

Flesh-eating robots.

Rhinoboy on July 24, 2009 at 11:35 PM

What do you expect…………

…….. after millions of tax payer dollars are given to groups like La Raza, thanks to Ted Kennedy, who then spend their working days walking the halls of the United States Congress shoving the Chicano Race in every one’s face with the threat of votes and violence,

We get RINO’s who support Sotofinger……….

……. You keep voting for it, don’t be surprised when it happens.

AYNBLAND on July 24, 2009 at 10:11 PM

I understand your viewpoint and can even be tempted to agree: we’re past the minority-voter tipping point, so we must pander.

But honestly, I think our only hope is an aggressive nativist approach that brings millions of white working-class and middle-class voters back into the fold.

Hispanics aren’t stupid: they know that the Dems will always offer them more political power and more “benefits” than Repubs will. They will sell their votes like whores. The idea that we can win them over because of their “family values” and “work ethic” is just a George W. Bush fantasy.
