CNN president to Lou Dobbs: Stop covering the birth certificate story
posted at 4:35 pm on July 24, 2009 by Allahpundit
Bad idea. I sympathize with him wanting to protect CNN from negative press but the surest way to feed a conspiracy theory, needless to say, is to try to suppress it. This is like Roger Ailes issuing a communique ordering Fox News not to cover 9/11 Truth. What is he hiding?
TVNewser has learned CNN/U.S. president Jon Klein sent an email to a handful of “Lou Dobbs Tonight” staffers last night regarding the coverage of the so-called birthers and the validity of Pres. Obama’s birth in the U.S.
In part, Klein writes, “It seems this story is dead- because anyone who still is not convinced doesn’t really have a legitimate beef.” Klein asked CNN researchers to dig into the question of why Obama couldn’t produce the original birth certificate. The researchers contacted the Hawaii Health Dept. and confirmed that paper documents were discarded in 2001 when the department went paperless. That reportedly includes Pres. Obama’s original birth certificate.
Dave Weigel, who’s been tracking the Birther phenomenon for months, floats a new story today about Team McCain having investigated the rumors last year and found nothing to them. Possible lines of Birther attack: McCain’s vetters were too dumb to find the smoking gun; even if they found the smoking gun, McCain’s eligibility was also in question at one point due to his being born in Panama so he couldn’t use it; McCain’s a RINO and wanted to lose so even if he did find the smoking gun, he probably destroyed it to help Obama out.
As a capper to Birther Week, here’s Matthews beating the dead horse once more with G. Gordon Liddy. Come for Liddy’s misinformation about what Obama’s grandmother really said about his birthplace, stay for E. Steven Collins’s embarrassing swooning over The One.

CNN has walked it back, saying they’ll let Dobbs cover it. At least that’s what Jake Tapper wrote on Twitter.

Good God. Yeah birtherism is embaressing, but at least it isn’t sinister and repugnant like trutherism.
Why does people being birthers bother you so?

Is anyone else amazed that the birth certificate story has made it into the MSM at all? It certainly was never going to happen during the campaign.

I was talking to a friend of my family, a nurse, who just took a little humanitarian trip to Kenya for a couple of weeks. She was repeatedly asked by Kenyans if she would like to go see where Obama was born. Now, I chalk it up to wishful thinking on the part of the Kenyans that asked her this, wanting a little more than our president just saying he is Kenyan, as opposed to actually being born there. It’s funny, more than anything, but she (the family friend) said they were totally serious about it.

Could a birther please explain the announcement in the Hawaiian newspaper of his birth? I’m no Obama fan, but Michelle Malkin was right on when she compared this particular “movement” to the Trig Truthers on the Left.

Mr. Dobbs:
It might be an idea to switch from the birth certificate story to try and find out why The President of The United States is attempting to start a violent race war.
This bit with Professor Gates is getting out of hand very quickly and to me is starting to seem like it was setup from the get-go as a ‘distraction’ to keep the masses away from health care and cap/trade legislation.
This could be the crisis too good to waste.

Again, not a birther here, *BUT*
Unlike 9/11 trutherism or the Kennedy assassination it’d be very easy to put this thing to bed… Obama could just trot out his birth certificate.
End of discussion.
Like the moon landing conspiracy. Here’s the moon rocks ]bam[ analyze ‘em.
But Obama laughs off the accusations, berates the accusers… and never releases the one thing that shows them for being the the “crazy” conspirators most think they are…
Which, as AP points out, only feeds the theory more.
Skywise on July 24, 2009 at 4:47 PM
Let’s look at who’s playing it up: MSNBC (left-wing network) and CNN (via Lou Dobbs, who regularly covers conspiracy theories like the NAU).
Meanwhile, FOX mentions it in passing, but rarely goes into any depth.
Why would the network friendly to the president cover this, but not the network unfriendly to him? Could painting the opposition as conspiracy theorists have anything to do with it, especially when the one other correspondent on CNN making an issue of it has been on the Alex Jones show more than once?
MadisonConservative on July 24, 2009 at 4:48 PM
This statement makes no sense. If they truly had gone paperless, and these were government documents, they they should have been filmed, microfiched, or digitally scanned. So where are the copies?
St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston has medical records going back to the 1800s that are filmed.
If the Hawaiian gob’ment destroyed the originals, they surely would have made copies. If they didn’t they’re either lying or stoopid.
madmonkphotog on July 24, 2009 at 4:48 PM
If this is what the CNN President wanted, fine, but for being stupid enough to put it in an e-mail to “several staffers” rather than talking to Dobbs face to face — and thus maintaining plausible deniability — he gets what ever pile of steaming sh*t is about to come his way. He’s a leader like Obama’s a leader: One who makes stupid mistakes.

1) Turned against Conservatives and the USA in his promotion of bad “Immigration Reform” that would legalize MILLIONS of illegals and make help make their family members legal by giving them the green light to come to the USA.
and
2) McCain was without a doubt, the “fall guy”, in the 2008 election. They knew he couldn’t win, especially with the people running his campaign.

The last I’d heard on this, shortly after Obama’s grandmother died was….the Governor of Hawaii, had the official document sealed. Seems no one can gain access to it now. If this is true…my only question is…why seal it, if it’s legitimate, and would lay all of this to rest?
capejasmine on July 24, 2009 at 4:51 PM
That struck me, too. Municipalities don’t just toss old birth certificates in the trash! They are maintained, either electronically or otherwise so they are available for scrutiny. Sigh. AllahPundit, have you listened to the tape of Sarah Obama? Salon has their headline wrong. They say that Sarah Obama did NOT say he was born in Kenya. Elsewhere they admit that, yes, she did say that, but then her family corrected her again and again and again.
Sarah Obama DID say that she was there for Obama’s birth when asked if he was born in Kenya.
Others have tried to say that SHE later denied it, but if you listen to the tape, I count exactly zero seconds that it took for the translator to translate the revised question from the interviewer into Swahili, for Sarah to answer in Swahili, and for the translator to translate back into English what she said. How could he do it so fast that it took no time at all?
The fact of the matter is that Sarah Obama said she was there for the birth, the translator translated it that way, and then when the interviewer followed up to clarify, the translator took over the conversation. Sarah Obama was whisked away and Raila Odinga eventually put armed guards around her house to keep anyone unauthorized from talking to her until after the election.
Make of it what you will, but at least know what the facts are.

Kenya’s ambassador is taped on a radio program saying that Obama’s birthplace in Kenya is already well-known.
It’s funny because every anecdote I’ve heard where people have spoken to Kenyans, the Kenyans always say it is common knowledge that he was born there.
Even Raila Odinga issued a decree that Obama’s records in Kenya were to be sealed until after the election. What records, you ask? Well, there ARE records of Obama contributing to Odinga’s campaign, but Jerome Corsi already had those when the decree was made. What other records might there be? Hmm…..

JamesLee on July 24, 2009 at 5:04 PM
changer1701, the newspaper announcement said nothing about where Obama was born. Neither newspaper can even say how the birth announcements got in there, who put them in and based on what. And the lady who has lived right next to the address given for the Obamas in those announcements since before Obama was born has said that there was never a Black-white couple living there who had a child.
So the announcements, quite frankly, raise more questions than they answer.
My guess is that Madeline Dunham put the information in there. Or, if they were generated from vital statistics records, it would indicate that Obama’s birth was registered either by a hospital in Hawaii or by Madeline or Ann Dunham regardless of where the birth took place.
Three of our children were born in St Cloud, MN but the birth announcements went in the hometown papers of both parents, in TX and NE. Again, the announcements never said where the birth took place – just where the couple lived (and it’s been shown that they didn’t even live there either).

What would those who believe he was born in the US, accept as evidence that he was born in Kenya, if indeed, obama is suppressing that information?
Anyone who believes the theory that obama was born in the US, though he has no COLB to prove it, is, by definition, a “birther”, too. Both beliefs stem from what you want to believe, but nether of them can be proven. So, that being the case, why choose to believe the unproven conspiracy theory that works in obama’s favor, when you could just as easily choose the unproven conspiracy theory that works against him?
