Video: The best part of ObamaCare? Lines!

posted at 3:30 pm on July 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Do politicians think before speaking? No, but then, what fun would that be? Rep. Carol Shea-Porter gives us yet another laughter point when she exclaims that a nationalized health-care system that makes everyone wait in lengthy lines would be preferable to a system that provides responsiveness for 87% of the nation:

“I just wanted to make a couple of comments. I heard one of my colleagues say ‘waiting in line,’ that people would be waiting in line for medical care. I would like to say that many of my constituents would love to wait in line for medical care,” Shea-Porter stated. “They are yanked out of line because they don’t have coverage.”

So once again, the solution in this case is to impose the kind of ex post equity that we usually get from big government programs: equal access to mediocrity, or worse.  The overwhelming majority of Americans do not have to wait weeks and months to see a doctor or get referrals to specialists, which is why more than 80% of us like our current plans.  Shea-Porter wants to toss all that out and replace it with a system that makes all Americans equally sick and provides an equal level of unresponsiveness to everyone.

Why not just focus on actual free-market reform that will incentivize growth in providers and services, give better coverage through incentives and the elimination of state barriers for entry, and lift all boats in the water?  Because that won’t give a select group of elites the power to determine outcomes, which is what is really at stake in this debate.  Shea-Porter’s statement should make their preferred outcome plain for all to see.

Because that’s no way to build a socialist one party state.

Which is Obama’s true motivation.

Shea-Porter wants to toss all that out and replace it with a system that makes all Americans equally sick and provides an equal level of unresponsiveness to everyone.

Now that’s not entirely accurate. The proposed system won’t provide all Americans with the same crappy level of care. Certain special elites — like Congress — will still have their gold-plated coverage, and will continue to get top-of-the-line care.

AZCoyote on July 23, 2009 at 3:36 PM

Maybe they would also love to just go home and take the painkillers rather than stand in line.

I forget … is that the red pill or the blue pill?

Oh yeah, nationalized health care keeps sounding better and better.

Realist on July 23, 2009 at 3:39 PM

I’ve figured it out….

With waiting rooms jam packed with people, they will make an ideal target for terrorist suicide bombings.

The fear of these attacks will keep everybody at home…no more lines! ObamaCare works!

The only way ObamaCare works is if he actively invites terrorists into the country.

Obama is working with the terrorists to enact his socialist nightmare!

Will she be standing in line with her constituents? So they can tell her how much they love it?

lorien1973 on July 23, 2009 at 3:40 PM

This is all a lot of class-warfare bullshit, too. Democrats have convinced a lot of poor and middle class voters that “the rich” have better healthcare than they do, and they really don’t care if “the rich” end up with worse care as long as theirs gets better – or at least until more Democratic propaganda convinces them it is better. They are perfectly happy to wait in line, as long as they can laugh at “the rich dude” standing in line behind them.

The waiting rooms will be wall papered with dear leaders picture and the TV’s will loop between obama speeches.

farright on July 23, 2009 at 3:41 PM

The great irony is this:

The rich are going to get soaked with tax increases to pay for universal health insurance. The quality of care will decline, but the rich will still be able to afford to pay out of pocket for elite health care. The end result will be an even further separation of the rich from the poor in terms of quality of life (which the dems keep yelling at us about).

A Russian in the old USSR was standing in line for fish for three hours. When he got to the front of the line, the man behind the counter put up a sign, “Out of vegetables.”

The man in line said, “I thought this was the line for fish.” The counter guy said, “No this is the vegetable line where we’re out of vegetables. You want the fish line where they’re out of fish.”

Akzed on July 23, 2009 at 3:47 PM

rob verdi on July 23, 2009 at 3:47 PM

When the Soviet Union implemented it’s “universal health care”, one of the things that became glaringly obvious was the growing disparity between what health care the politicans and politically connected received vs the average Soviet citizen.

Politburo = great health care

Average Vladimir = not so great.

This will happen here.

Plus, medicines and doctors went underground … a health care black market sprang up.

AZCoyote on July 23, 2009 at 3:36 PM

I don’t think so. The Federal Employees Health Benefit Plan is simply an administrative structure though which federal employees can choose from among several different private insurance plans, with the government paying a substantial portion of the premium. If those private insurers cease dong business because they can no longer compete with the government insurance plan, federal employees will end up on the government plan by default. There is also a good possibility that the government will end the FEHBP because the costs of any private plan will go up substantially from all the cost-shifting being done by hospitals and doctors who cannot get paid enough by the public plan. The OPM will simply tell federal employees that it can no longer offer an affordable private option, and automatically enroll all 5 million government workers in the public plan.

The federal government is the nation’s largest employer. When this legislation is implemented, the FIRST people who get forced to enroll in the public plan will be federal employees. I suppose Congress could somehow exempt itself from this, but it would have to pass legislation to do it and it would be attacked mercilessly.

I had to take my kid to the emergency room last week. We waited three hours and I didn’t see anyone yanked out of line.

A slightly telling sidenote, I was asked if I had given my sick kid any medication for his fever, I responded “Yes, Tylenol at such and such time.” The exasperated triage nurse muttered, well, you’re the first one. When I asked if she were serious, she said, “oh yeah”. We were refered by the pediatrician, but had to wait behind people who couldn’t be bothered to try Tylenol.

I don’t know why Republicans waste money creating ads.

Just airing the inane and stupid things Democrats say on a daily basis, should be enough to get these jackasses thrown bodily out of office.
