Obama presser: What was the point?

posted at 8:47 am on July 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

When a president calls a prime-time press conference, it traditionally means that the White House has some new strategy, message, or policy creation that they want to reveal with a big flourish.  For at least the second time in a row, Barack Obama demanded valuable prime-time real estate and the nation’s attention in order to repeat the same lines he’s used for the last two months on health care.  Obama failed to present a single new idea, proposal, or even argument that had not already been floated from Obama himself and the White House in the full-court press over the last 10 days in Obama’s media appearances.

Well, except for the new notion of predatory tonsillectomies.  Let me tell you a story about tonsillectomies.  My son could not get one for over four years because the HMO that covered him didn’t want to spend the money.  Only when we transferred him to my insurance could we get a pediatrician who would do it (who happened to be his original pediatrician) — and who pronounced the other doctors as idiots for letting them go that long.  Fortunately, I could choose insurance plans and doctors.  The incentives are set up against tonsillectomies, not favoring them, mainly because a few experts decided a few decades ago that they were generally unnecessary.

In ObamaCare, those experts will be in charge of all doctors.

Howard Kurtz remarked on Twitter immediately after the conclusion that Obama once again failed to have a consistent and understandable message in the presser.  It went farther than that, though; Obama not only failed to have a message, he also failed to answer most of the questions.  He talked endlessly after being asked them, a strategy obviously designed to cut down on questions through filibustering, but he didn’t answer the questions.

When he talked at length, though, he made some pretty interesting mistakes, such as this:

The one commitment that I’ve been clear about is I don’t want that final one-third of the cost of health care to be completely shouldered on the backs of middle class families who are already struggling in a difficult economy.

And so, if I see a proposal that is primarily funded through taxing middle class families, I’m going to be opposed to that because I think there are better ideas to do it.

Actually, until that statement, Obama had clearly told the middle class that their taxes would go down, not up.  Now he’s saying that he won’t support a system primarily funded by the middle class, which seems to imply that he won’t mind one that taxes the middle class to provide some of the funding.  And Obama wouldn’t even commit to a veto — just that he would “be opposed to that” approach.

And while we’re chewing over the weird attack on doctors as greedy vultures who prey on the throats of innocent little children, let’s not forget the odd, resurrected references to two organizations opposed to ObamaCare:

Right now, doctors a lot of times are forced to make decisions based on the fee payment schedule that’s out there. So if they’re looking and you come in and you’ve got a bad sore throat or your child has a bad sore throat or has repeated sore throats, the doctor may look at the reimbursement system and say to himself, “You know what? I make a lot more money if I take this kid’s tonsils out.”

Now, that may be the right thing to do, but I’d rather have that doctor making those decisions just based on whether you really need your kid’s tonsils out or whether it might make more sense just to change — maybe they have allergies. Maybe they have something else that would make a difference.

So — so part of what we want do is to free doctors, patients, hospitals to make decisions based on what’s best for patient care. And that’s the whole idea behind Mayo. That’s the whole idea behind the Cleveland Clinic.

Except both the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic oppose ObamaCare.  Mayo’s statement made headlines; surely someone mentioned this to the President?

Finally, let’s look at the press last night.  They only got a few bites at the apple thanks to Obama’s filibusters, but overall did a little better than I’d expected.  Most of the questions were challenging in some degree, except for Lynn Sweet’s inexplicable desire to get Obama to talk about the Henry Gates incident, and Obama’s inexplicable desire to opine without the facts as he himself admitted.  (Jules Crittenden has a useful post about this today.)  However, I also notice that not one reporter asked Obama why he postponed issuing the budget numbers for a month in the middle of this debate, which is directly related to the health-care issue.  I’d call that a big-time fail for the White House press corps, which supposedly exists to ensure accountability.

It’s pretty much impossible to get through college these days without being FORCED to regurgitate leftist, “America sucks”, etc back to them thousands of times in order to get the grades necessary to get the piece of paper at the end.

A fair number, even if they went in with a good education and upbringing are going to get brainwashed by virtue of repetition.

This is why we need to get the government monopoly out of education, it’s the ONLY thing that will save us from cycles of socialism. The answer of course is competition, both at the grade school/high school level and the colleges. Conservative, traditional schools outperform leftist ones in the end result of superior education every time, and would win in a market where there is competition for the education dollar. It’d reduce costs too…

Education is the only institution that gets more money the more it fails. Which is why it never gets better.

Obama presser: What was the point?

Because:

Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Ronald Reagan

And:

No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we’ll ever see on this earth!
Ronald Reagan

And:

The most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government and I’m here to help.
Ronald Reagan

Obama knows these things and his here to help.

FINALLY…THE $ 1 TRILLION QUESTION WAS ASKED!!!!!

YESTERDAY ON THE “ABC..OBAMA SPECIAL ON HEALTH CARE”……OBAMA WAS ASKED: “MR. PRESIDENT WILL YOU AND YOUR FAMILY GIVE UP YOUR CURRENT HEALTH CARE PROGRAM AND JOIN THE NEW “UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE PROGRAM” THAT THE REST OF US WILL BE ON ?

OBAMA IGNORED THE QUESTION AND DIDN’T ANSWER IT!!!

A NUMBER OF SENATORS WERE ASKED THE SAME QUESTION AND THEIR RESPONSE WAS … WE WILL THINK ABOUT IT !!!!

IT WAS ALSO ANNOUNCED TODAY ON THE NEWS THAT THE “KENNEDY HEALTH CARE BILL” HAS WRITTEN INTO IT THAT CONGRESS WILL BE (FROM THIS GREAT HEALTH CARE PLAN) EXEMPT !!!!!

HOW ABOUT THOSE APPLES…..NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR OBAMA OR CONGRESS….. BUT “OK” FOR THE REST OF US?

Keemo on July 23, 2009 at 10:34 AM

I wonder why there is a room full of reporters at these press conferences? The ten or so reporters picked to ask questions know who they are and they seem to sit in the front row, so why do the others show up? They could watch it on TV like the rest of us.

These are not press conferences, but rather Q&A-based advertisements by the White House.

There are two imperatives:

Also, Bozo in his racist mode stated the Cambridge police officers acted stupidly when arresting an obnoxious racist jerk caught breaking in to a house.

I just read the police report and I gotta tell ya the cops did the right thing. The guy refused to identify himself.

Bozo bemoans the fact that cops disproportionately arrest black and Latino people without looking at the Bureau of Justice Statistics web site. They commit a disproportionate amount of the crimes.

But the first thing Bozo does is to smear the cops as racists. Well the cops aren’t backing down Bozo. I think you just made a big mistake.

dogsoldier on July 23, 2009 at 10:42 AM

@Keemo-

Obama received a similar question like that last night and he answered by saying the new health care system he is proposing will be just like the health care system that members of Congress have.
Wonder why no one picked up on that and did a comparison between the two.

albill on July 23, 2009 at 10:42 AM

The point was to communicate these very important messages:

1. “Yes, everything is much worse than we predicted it would be if we passed the stimulus, but the stimulus did its job and we saved the economy. But if we don’t pass this health care bill, the economy will get even worse than it isn’t.”

2. “I want you to hate the doctors, hospitals, pharmaceuticals, and especially those big bad insurance companies. Hate them enough to back my crap sandwich plan.”

Democrats are preventing Republican House Members from sending their constituents a mailing that is critical of the majority’s health care reform plan, blocking the mailing by alleging that it is inaccurate.

That’s funny—Accuracy only goes one way with those fools.

ted c on July 23, 2009 at 10:45 AM

The press corps went into this confab with conventional expectations: Obama means to change the tide running against him, put pressure on waffling Dems.

But Obama is no conventional president. His remarks weren’t aimed at Blue Dogs. Obama’s team called this presser because, to them, their constituency IS the media. This was “marching orders”. For good reason, his staff presumed they could trot him out to dazzle the press and it would dutifully report his “good intentions” as facts.

The press corps wasn’t particularly hard on him. But one definitely gets the impression they’re onto the fact that they’re being used and taken for granted. Baby steps.

Excellent points.

Notice the media ads that Obama wants adults to return to school–re-educate the masses while padding the pockets of “educators”.

A professor told me once that an education was something people rarely wanted their money’s worth. /Slackers come in all ages and socioeconomic brackets.

Ivy League meritocracy is progressive and rules supreme only if you buy it, though most do, enhancing its elitist marketing. I cringe at what the Ivy League is producing, and how the Nobel Peace Prize has become ignoble. These are now, as often as not, exemplary frauds.

I take your point regarding the excellent education provided at “conservative, traditional schools” and would substantially credit bright minds of self made people, whether their formal education is from a state university or from the school of hard knocks. For example, Sarah Palin performs well for those she serves, as does Ed Morrissey.

Just an anecdote about tonsillectomies.

A co-worker of mine moved from Virginia to New York City. She went from almost never being sick to being sick constantly. Constant infections including Scarlet Fever, which put her in the hospital. She finally found a doctor who recommended she have her tonsils out.

It was like night and day. I have no idea what tonsils do, but having them removed sure made her life a helluva a lot better.

Interesting to watch the narrative take shape this morning on state-run media and also legitimate media.

The takeaway seems to be:

Obama doesn’t care about achievers being against him, and leftists naturally piss on the police (when they don’t control them).

The reason why he doesn’t is that he has… the mob. Achievers, the “rich”, doctors, etc, being angry at him doesn’t matter because they are outnumbered by his street mob.

That’s what those comments were designed for, to fuel his mobs and prime them for what he ultimately will do with them.

The state-run media raped Sarah Palin and left her in a ditch to die because she wasn’t articulate or educated enough for them.

I contend that individuals pursuing their education independently, once trained in scholarly research, do not “learn” from most professors anything beyond mannerisms, stylized mannerisms that inevitably become outdated, regardless of authenticity. One professor used to say that the messenger always needs someone else’s ear to refine the message. Though true that another is required to hear the message, it isn’t necessarily true that someone else’e ear must do the refining.

You have to be a willful ignoramus to avoid the explanation: The President’s erratic and unstable performance last night confirmed that the communist-style health care takeover is dead.

I would be able to support an amnesty bill today–IF–the public spigot were turned off. Turn off benefits–education, welfare, unemployment. Work for your citizenship–join the military, upon exit from your distinguished career–thank you and welcome to America.

Remember Rodney King, the black man who can not be arrested?

That’s the goal here with this Gates story; ‘people of color’ immune from arrest because of their skin color.

Like you say, FIRST deny the benefit spigot to non-citizens.

It’s not a spigot. It’s a broken dam.

Isn’t Obama going to the Cleveland Clinic today?

Remember the movie, “Weekend at Bernie’s”–two dudes have this boss that suddenly dies just as they’re getting ready to whoop it up at his beach place for a weekend. They then trot him around making it look like he’s alive.

Today, Obamacare is a corpse getting trotted around by Obama–it’s a cold stiff and he’s parading this thing around and all the adults in Cleveland are going to see right through it, Obama’s going to prop it up and say “Look, this is a great program…” trying to keep the dang thing alive…

ted c on July 23, 2009 at 11:29 AM

Right now, doctors a lot of times are forced to make decisions based on the fee payment schedule that’s out there. So if they’re looking and you come in and you’ve got a bad sore throat or your child has a bad sore throat or has repeated sore throats, the doctor may look at the reimbursement system and say to himself, “You know what? I make a lot more money if I take this kid’s tonsils out.”

Forgive me if this point has been made. I heard this last night, and I needed to read it today for it to sink in.

Think about your own experiences with doctors. I don’t profess to know all the billing arrangements that doctors have, but I don’t think that they include kick-backs. Here, Obama posits a situation that simply doesn’t occur in this day and age. How many people have primary care physicians–the doctors normally treating sore throats–who also perform the surgery? If anything, an unprincipled primary care physician will avoid referring the patient out to the ENT who’ll likely perform the surgery in order to keep the suffering patient returning. But then how often does the patient return before going to another primary care physician or demanding a referral.

I guess my point is that I’m fed up with listening to a moron who posits strawman arguments to explain critical points about important issues as the media swoons today about how “knowledgeable he is on the issue”–Chuck Todd is channelling this on MSNBC and NBC.

Fricking Obama, identify your objections to the current system, offer a specific example, offer your solution, identify and explain the consequences of your solution, and be prepared to respond to critics who question you be some method other than calling them selfish, racist, or unwilling to solve problems.

ted c on July 23, 2009 at 11:29 AM

Close, but not quite right.

The reason for them trotting him around was that Bernie, before getting killed, left orders for the two of them to be killed but only when he wasn’t around.

In this case, Obama’s still trotting ObamaCare around because, without it, his presidency is dead.

Don’t confuse the high school kids. AARP is a yellow smiley face bumper sticker coupon club you can join after a certain age for a minimum fee. It is simply a special interest group that provides no services other than membership rates should you choose to spend money elsewhere on goods and services.

maverick muse on July 23, 2009 at 11:37 AM

The point of the presser was to demonize greedy doctors and greedy insurers. And then at the last minute he squeezed in the opportunity to demonize racist police officers.

Now the liberal left will be fully supportive of Obamacare.

Blacks and Latinos should stop committing a disproportionate percentage of crimes.

I’m surprised that Obama didn’t conduct a miracle healing right then and there…. Moreover, you would have thought that 4-5 guys would have torn a hole in the roof and lowered their handicapped friend down via rope so the Won could have layed hands on him and proclaimed, “get up and walk…”

ted c on July 23, 2009 at 11:48 AM

THE QUESTION; Does Obama play stupid, ignorant of the facts, and oblivious to reality or is Obama an ignorant rascist fool?

THE ANSWER; Both. As well as a motor mouth that apparently rarely knows of which he speaks. Still, the most telling of Barry’s labels would be the [rascist fool] one. Our president is an ignorant rascist fool. Kinda gives you a warm feeling running up your leg, no?

OT, but not really……

Fox News just got a copy of the Gates police report and says Obama may not have wanted to go there last night.

Also, Bill Cosby has weighed in, and was supposedly not kind to our Precedent and his remarks last night, video to follow.

Barry manipulates the news cycle once again.

Biden surely had his aneurysm rupture, Kennedy is thinking with his tumor.
Obama is ignorant in a medical way at severallevels. He infers docs can’t diagnose tonsilitis. It isn’t strep or allergies. A t& a will not cure or prevent strep.

Obama thinks T& A is defined by the assistant Chief of the justice department porn dictionary.
