Nuance: Cop who arrested Gates is an expert on … racial profiling
posted at 4:03 pm on July 23, 2009 by Allahpundit
The perfect crime, my friends. If you were a racist eager to harass prominent black intellectuals, what better cover story could there be than teaching tolerance to new recruits for years on end? Besides giving Reggie Lewis CPR in a desperate bid to save his life, I mean.
Clearly we’re dealing with a criminal genius of unusual cunning here.
Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley has taught a class about racial profiling for five years at the Lowell Police Academy after being hand-picked for the job by former police Commissioner Ronny Watson, who is black, said Academy Director Thomas Fleming.
“I have nothing but the highest respect for him as a police officer. He is very professional and he is a good role model for the young recruits in the police academy,” Fleming told The Associated Press on Thursday.
The course, called “Racial Profiling,” teaches about different cultures that officers could encounter in their community “and how you don’t want to single people out because of their ethnic background or the culture they come from,” Fleming said…
In radio interviews Thursday morning, Crowley maintained he followed procedure.
“I support the president of the United States 110 percent. I think he was way off base wading into a local issue without knowing all the facts as he himself stated before he made that comment,” Crowley told WBZ-AM. “I guess a friend of mine would support my position, too.”
Last I heard, Gates was thinking of making a documentary about his experience because, well, he’s got his narrative and he’s sticking to it — no matter what certain other prominent black intellectuals have to say. To be honest, from what little I know of the facts, it sounds like the only “crime” Gates was guilty of was being a douche to the cops. I’m not sure why that warranted arrest, but then neither you nor I nor The One was there, not that that stopped him from making grand pronouncements about the alleged stupidity of the police’s conduct. Self-serving exit quotation from his latest statement about this: “I think that I have extraordinary respect for the difficulties of the job that police officers do.”

Crowley was called to investigate an alleged burglary in progress that someone had reported. What on earth does that have to do with him being a profiling expert? Apparently all cops took that class he taught.
Doubtful that he picks and chooses which calls to respond to.
Urban Infidel on July 23, 2009 at 4:57 PM
Sgt. James Crowley is far more credible than both Obama and Gates combined, and in fact, considering the catalog of lies Obama has been caught telling, he doesn’t have any credibility at all.
Gates, who apparently stokes racial grievances for a living, sounds like a typical black racist that allowed his bigotry to run away with him, but instead of coming to his senses, (if he even has any), he is continuing his racist screed by trying to destroy the career of a good cop simply doing his job.
So, go to hell, Obama, and take racist POS friend Gates with you!

22 years of listening to Wrights racist crap has clearly made an impression on our President.
Racism…an equal opportunity stupidity. And our Prez makes it clear that he is not immune to such stupidity.

A neighbour of my aunt and uncle (an old busybody) went next door to ask the “movers” if so&so was home. The “movers” said, “sure, come in” and tied her up, stole everything in the house, and left. The police took a report and nothing else was done.
My mother dated a police officer for a number of years and I was privy to numerous, “Haw haw, they think we’ll catch those bad guys.” conversations.
As for your inevitable question about whether I can provide names or report numbers: I’ll need to see evidence that you have some level of education that would make such disclosures fruitful: a masters or higher in criminal justice, any advanced degree from a better school, or 5 years or more of equivalent experience in a related field. You may send any paperwork by registered mail. 1725 Blair St., Philadelphia, PA 19125

Once again Obama’s ego is showing. He truly believes he is more of an expert than the people who actually live and work the jobs every day.
He thinks he knows more about running a car company than the CEO of General Motors, more about engineering cars than engineers, more about running banks than bankers, more about real estate than real estate professionals, more about medicine than doctors or patients, more about energy than lifelong energy professionals, more about science than scientists, more about fighting a war than military professionals and now he knows more about how to do a policeman’s job than a lifelong officer of the law.
His ego truly knows no bounds. His hubris is all encompassing.

White guys have misunderstandings or run-ins with the police every day. The difference with us is we don’t get to piss, moan and bitch about how picked on and victimized we are. “The man’s keeping me down! That’s just how it is being a white man in Amerikkka! No justice, no peace, man-n-n-n!”
I was pulled over a few blocks from my house for expired tags. I was wearing a suit, driving a decent car. This was in a very wealthy, peaceful area. The female cop who pulled me over unclipped her gun and put her hand on it while standing behind me and very close to my car. She talked to me as if I had a gun in one hand and a bag of crack in the other. I half thought she was going to put a bullet behind my left ear. Her male partner calmly stood back and watched.
I had a choice. I could give free rein to my annoyance and leap out of the car talking a ton of s— and possibly get arrested or even shot or, I could put up with it, go through the motions and make it to work to go about my day. I chose the latter.
Strangely, the president did not later denounce my treatment on national TV nor did he talk about how abused and dissed the white man is in this raggeddy-ass country known as America.

Blake on July 23, 2009 at 5:23 PM
And if I just locked myself out…I’m not sure I’d try breaking down the door. I’d probably opt for smashing a window, but only if I couldn’t walk to a neighbor’s house to call someone who might have a spare on them (spouse, lover, kid…someone).
bluelightbrigade on July 23, 2009 at 5:23 PM
Let me get this straight, cops show up to a burglary call and find an individual inside a house who refuses to identify himself.
Still looking for the problem. When responding to this type of call, you have to make damn sure you are talking to somebody who has a legal right to be there. This includes getting a valid id and asking a few probative questions on their business. You might not know WHO’s house it is and if the person is truly the property owner. Sure you could take their word for it but bad guys have been known to lie.

I once stopped the driver of a Lincoln Continental about 2:30 in the morning. Vehicle had the high back front seats and all the rear windows were tinted. On a straight stretch of roadway, car was doing 30 in a 45mph zone and slowly weaving back and forth in the traffic lane. On contacting the driver, found that he was a middle-aged black guy, there was what looked like a mixed drink on the center console and a bottle of JD on the passenger seat. He asked why I stopped him, and I told him what I saw of his driving and could smell and see in the interior of the car. His next statement was “You only stopped my ’cause I’m black.” Go figure. Guy later blew a .28.
Professor Gates, just COLOR me skeptical.

Do you really have to have this spelled out for you? I thought smart people draw from the very ether the knowledge to guide their actions. Being a cop is a dangerous job, you never know who you’re dealing with – it’s just as likely that you’ll get shot in the face as anything else, right?

Can’t agree. At some point you have to exert your authority or you look impotent. A cop can’t be perceived as being spineless. It would make the job about impossible, I imagine.
The more I think about this the more this whole thing smells. Two guys at night, in dark gear, breaking into a residence? Black, white or green, that doesn’t look good. I have a hard time believing this guy wouldn’t have considered that it might look suspicious. I’m starting to think the good prof was looking for some “street cred” to sell to his young charges or, as someone else suggested, to sell a book. Either that, or the requirements for being a Harvard professor have fallen dramatically.
Having said all that, anything that makes Barry look like the idiot he is is OK by me.
mikefln on July 23, 2009 at 6:12 PM
I’m wondering where he got that idea. I suspect that if a “powerful White professor” followed the officer out of the house yelling at him, and the officer told the “powerful White professor” to back off, that the “powerful White professor” would indeed be wearing cuffs less than a minute later.
As I remember, one of the proximal causes of that fellow being shot in the subway station in Oakland was the tension caused by other bystanders being douches to the cops. You could see the bystanders’ challenges to the cops ratcheting tensions sky high, and then the gunshot…
When I encountered an officer looking for a burglar in the back yard of my father-in-law’s residence, and he pulled his gun, you can bet I listened to every order, followed them to the letter, and didn’t talk back once after being told to be silent. He apologized profusely afterward, but I would have behaved exactly as he did had I encountered an unknown male while searching for a burglar.
I’ve read that the charges were dismissed against Gates. I’m betting they were dismissed by yet another liberal DA who supports Obama 110%. Officer Crowley will undoubtedly reflect upon his 110% support of Obama when the inevitable lawsuit summons lands on his desk.

Firm, professional, retains authority, doesn’t lose his cool, lack of attitude, not taking things personally, thinks ahead as to how his actions today will effect things tomorrow.
He took charge as soon as the reporters approached him and never let things escalate. They knew who has in charge. With a guy like this things should never get out of hand unless you are trying to make them get out of hand.

In his interview, Sgt. Crowley sounds more measured, mature, and honest than either Gates or Obama. In fact, Crowley sounds more presidential than Obama, who mouths off on this issue like Al Sharpton. Gates sounds unhinged, even after he’s cooled down.
As this story unfolds, it becomes pretty obvious that Sgt. Crowley did not racially profile Gates, but vice versa. Gates profiled the white cop who came to his door, and abused him in a prejudiced and vulgar way. But then, the standards of behavior for Harvard professors is lower than for police officers.
The irony here is that Gates demands the kind of respect from police that he refuses to give them. And even when he gets that respect, he lies about it to stoke racial animus. It’s despicable.
And Obama has the bad judgement to weigh in on the wrong side.

Listening to talk radio in Boston it is coming out that there are recordings of Professor Gates yelling at the officer in the background when Sgt. Crowley was trying to transmit info over his radio. He left to go outside because he could not hear due to the yelling and evidently it was picked up and recorded.
They have not been released yet and may not be any time soon (Here in MA, Cambridge is usually referred to as “The People’s Republic of Cambridge) but the word is they do not put Professor Gates in a very good light further giving credence to Sgt. Crowleys version of events and that proper procedures and protocol were followed.
