Our generally conservative community receives more Federal money per capita than almost any other community in the nation (major DOE and DoD installations) with plenty of cheap real estate available. While local pundits consider the local economy to be almost recession-proof, there is NO hiring going on due to the higher cost of wages and uncertainty of future earnings. Even those with high-paying govt.-funded jobs will have to deal with high inflation from so much fresh money that's been floated.

If we don't have high-paying jobs, we all will be forced to go on the govt. reservation in order to receive help keeping up with the inflation they've caused.

The antithesis of the old Reaganesque principle "A rising tide lifts all boats" would be "An artificially inflated tide requires all unfloating boats to get on board the nearest government barge."

I graduated from High School in 1978, during Jimmy "the peanut farmer" Carter's rein as President. While more than 30 years ago there are still things I remember well about his presidency -

I remember gas lines/gas rationing

I remember high unemployment

I remember a nation which had very little pride in itself

After 4 years of that asshat one wondered if this nation would ever reach the status of a great nation again?

Thank God for Ronald Reagan, who took the helm and lead this nation back from the brink.

Hopefully there's another great leader waiting in the wings for 2012, cause after the One's tour of duty we're going to need it desperately.

There is no stimulus in pork, or ham.

Until something fundamentally changes the business dynamic, the plunge will continue.

The American people are on to Obama now.

Correct - we haven’t hit bottom yet. I think we hit bottom next spring, assuming that commercial real estate and credit card crashes hit by Sept/Oct.

The funny thing is, outside of trolls, everyone here could have predicted this (and probably did).

Vashta.Nerada on July 23, 2009 at 5:24 PM

I suspect it will be earlier than that. I don't know about anyone else, but Christmas is going to be VERY lean this year unless things really bounce back. If others are experiencing the same as us, retail is going to take a massive hit this Christmas season which will send the market plummeting like a rock.

Just my non-expert prediction...

What I don’t understand is who are the 25% who claim the “stimulus” really is helping the economy? And what planet do they live on?

These would be the newly hired Federal employees.

But, in my microcosm I’m surrounded by Libs and they aren’t paying attention. They don’t visit sites like this, nor research, nor even watch the news shows regularly (they laugh at me for doing so-I’m deranged and paranoid apparently). They just don’t want to hear anything bad.

It's the liberal cocoon. The narcissism among liberals is incredible. I've talked to a couple people (why don't i know more conservatives??) who have no problem with unemployment going to 20%. They. Just. Don't. Care.
about anybody but themselves and Obama.

It really is head-in-the-sand syndrome.
I remember years ago that picture in Newsweek where a woman was wearing a sticker on her lapel saying "I only dine with liberals".

In a weird way it's like real racism. "That person is a conservative or a republican we don't talk to their kind..."
It's the same attitude that existed in the segregated South back then.
It's just ideas now, not skin color.

I'm beginning to think that those of us who do work and want to work are suckers. Millions of our most productive fellow citizens are out of work or are stuck with jobs way below what they're capable of and used to do and yet I'm not hearing much outrage beyond those that were ticked off way back to last November?

Looking at the poll numbers most Americans are confident that this Marxist gang will sort everything out; that this is just a slump due to nothing in particular that will soon go away and we'll be as prosperous as before. They are only grudgingly responding to negatives on certain things when polled, but they still love Dear Leader! Oh yeah!

Welcome to Mr. Answer man:

I don’t see the economy coming back at the end of the year as so many financial pundits claim. We’ve got at least 3 and a half years before we start to see daylight. God willing.

IrishEi on July 23, 2009 at 5:20 PM

Your question and answer are as follows:

Q: When will the economy come back?
A: When the Democrats go away.

My, my! Apparently Senator Jim Dimint is here. Yes, Sir, what is your question?

Q: Will Obama meet his Waterloo?
A: Right now it looks more like he'll meet his Hiroshima.

Now, Senator, turnabout is fair play. May I ask you a question?
Yes.

Q: Who helped Ben Bernanke carry out his extremely dangerous policy of increasing our money supply 15-fold?
A: It was my Liberal cousin, Jimmy Dimint.

Lots of folks have exhausted their benefits and all their extensions. When people lose their homes and start living on the street, I’m worried things will get really really ugly.

At the rate things are going, that won't take long. Remember, Crap and tax is still winding through the Senate, and with 60 votes, the dems have what they need to completely destroy America. If that gets passed, you could easily see unemployment hit 20 - 30 percent, and things getting really ugly.

Add that to the fear of taxes they feel toward the payment for the porkulus ineffectus. (I coined that, feel free to use it.. heh)

One of the contributing factors to my permanent furlough.

At the unemployment office I figure my next visit people will be lining up outside since the place was full to the seams the last time. The folks working there are frightened.

Interesting.

Urban cores have always made me uneasy, as I always felt the line between relative order and chaos was very thin. Katrina confirmed my suspicion.

I grew up in a rural area. We didn't even lock our door at night. So I don't get city people who shrug off rampant auto theft, burglaries, drug dealing, etc.

What proportion of the population is on welfare in the average urban core? How much effect would an increase in unemployment have? (Don’t know–just asking.)

I don't know the welfare numbers, but it's more a question of relative change. Unemployment is a bigger problem because of the idleness and boredom than just the money issue, though the money issue is huge. There's no way that the states will be able to keep up with rising welfare costs, as the states are all on the fiscal edge, too.

Inflation might be the bigger threat, when welfare and unemployment checks don’t go nearly as far, and people are forced to change their standard of living.

Inflation is an awful threat to any society. People don't generally understand what is at risk with run-away inflation, and what is more at risk in our system, since there is no other currency or government that can bail the dollar out.

On top of that, the cities are all going broke and aren't going to be able to keep up with the growth in welfare "needs" and normal maintenance costs. When they start proposing the moronic cuts for police and firefighters and such (as California is demonstrating on a huge scale), then faith in the security of the cities plummets and people take off, leaving an even worse situation.

I don't think we have more than a year, maybe a year and half, until the cities really start to boil and then go supernova. There just isn't the money available to stop it, as money is the force that keeps urban centers from collapsing on themselves.

That's his plan all along. When everyone is out of work, then no one will have health coverage from their employer. We'll all need ObamaCare to survive!
