I remember a nation which had very little pride in itself

After 4 years of that asshat one wondered if this nation would ever reach the status of a great nation again?

Thank God for Ronald Reagan, who took the helm and lead this nation back from the brink.

Hopefully there’s another great leader waiting in the wings for 2012, cause after the One’s tour of duty we’re going to need it desperately.

Until something fundamentally changes the business dynamic, the plunge will continue.

Correct – we haven’t hit bottom yet. I think we hit bottom next spring, assuming that commercial real estate and credit card crashes hit by Sept/Oct.

The funny thing is, outside of trolls, everyone here could have predicted this (and probably did).

I suspect it will be earlier than that. I don’t know about anyone else, but Christmas is going to be VERY lean this year unless things really bounce back. If others are experiencing the same as us, retail is going to take a massive hit this Christmas season which will send the market plummeting like a rock.

Just my non-expert prediction…

What I don’t understand is who are the 25% who claim the “stimulus” really is helping the economy? And what planet do they live on?

These would be the newly hired Federal employees.

But, in my microcosm I’m surrounded by Libs and they aren’t paying attention. They don’t visit sites like this, nor research, nor even watch the news shows regularly (they laugh at me for doing so-I’m deranged and paranoid apparently). They just don’t want to hear anything bad.

In a weird way it’s like real racism. “That person is a conservative or a republican we don’t talk to their kind…”

Looking at the poll numbers most Americans are confident that this Marxist gang will sort everything out; that this is just a slump due to nothing in particular that will soon go away and we’ll be as prosperous as before. At the rate things are going, that won’t take long. Remember, Crap and tax is still winding through the Senate, and with 60 votes, the dems have what they need to completely destroy America. If that gets passed, you could easily see unemployment hit 20 – 30 percent, and things getting really ugly.

Anybody who lived through Carter get a sense of deja vu?

At the unemployment office I figure my next visit people will be lining up outside since the place was full to the seams the last time. The folks working there are frightened.

Interesting.

Urban cores have always made me uneasy, as I always felt the line between relative order and chaos was very thin. Katrina confirmed my suspicion.

I grew up in a rural area. We didn’t even lock our door at night. So I don’t get city people who shrug off rampant auto theft, burglaries, drug dealing, etc.

What proportion of the population is on welfare in the average urban core? How much effect would an increase in unemployment have? (Don’t know–just asking.)

I don’t know the welfare numbers, but it’s more a question of relative change. Unemployment is a bigger problem because of the idleness and boredom than just the money issue, though the money issue is huge. There’s no way that the states will be able to keep up with rising welfare costs, as the states are all on the fiscal edge, too.

Inflation might be the bigger threat, when welfare and unemployment checks don’t go nearly as far, and people are forced to change their standard of living.

Inflation is an awful threat to any society. People don’t generally understand what is at risk with run-away inflation, and what is more at risk in our system, since there is no other currency or government that can bail the dollar out.

On top of that, the cities are all going broke and aren’t going to be able to keep up with the growth in welfare “needs” and normal maintenance costs. When they start proposing the moronic cuts for police and firefighters and such (as California is demonstrating on a huge scale), then faith in the security of the cities plummets and people take off, leaving an even worse situation.

I don’t think we have more than a year, maybe a year and half, until the cities really start to boil and then go supernova. There just isn’t the money available to stop it, as money is the force that keeps urban centers from collapsing on themselves.
