House Democrats block GOP mailers on ObamaCare
posted at 11:36 am on July 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Roll Call reports on a fracas between Democrats and Republicans in the House over the right of Representatives to communicate with their constituents. Republicans want to send this chart, created by Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) to represent the flowchart of health services under ObamaCare, in order to show how much more complicated such care will become. Democrats filed a complaint with the franking committee and blocked it (via Drudge Report):
Democrats are preventing Republican House Members from sending their constituents a mailing that is critical of the majority’s health care reform plan, blocking the mailing by alleging that it is inaccurate.
House Republicans are crying foul and claiming that the Democrats are using their majority to prevent GOP Members from communicating with their constituents. …
“Hiding the truth about wildly unpopular policies is a Democrat specialty,” said one GOP aide. “I’d like to see the flow chart on how Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi plans on implementing the open and transparent government she keeps promising everyone.”
“We have initiated discussions with the minority to try and resolve current differences and are operating in good faith to achieve that goal,” said Kyle Anderson, a spokesman for House Administration Chairman Robert Brady (D-Pa.). The committee has oversight of the commission.
Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Calif.), ranking member of the committee and a member of the franking commission, said through a spokeswoman that he is also aware of the situation and is working with the members of the franking commission to resolve the differences, but he added that he believed Democrats on the commission were overreaching.
You can see the chart for yourself here, and click the image to get the full-size PDF:
Even if the Democrats have solid ground for complaining about the graphic, the best remedy for bad speech is more speech, not censorship. Let the Democrats argue the rebuttal in their own mailings. Frankly (pun intended), their criticisms are picayune, amounting in essence to a complaint that Brady didn’t draw enough lines — which just makes Brady’s point even more clear.
An open and transparent Congress and leadership which understood those concepts would not have been frightened of a flow chart.

Do you therefore agree that the franking privilege ought to go away? Maxine Waters (my Representative) sends out franked stuff nailing the Republicans all the time. I’m willing to bet a considerable sum that she never had any trouble getting her stuff out when the Republicans had control of Congress — she was obviously welcome to say whatever she needed to say to her constituents in the manner in which she chose to say it.

Cindy Munford on July 23, 2009 at 12:29 PM
The question is exactly what makes healthcare so complicated now, and whether it will or will not be more complicated should ObamaCare go into effect.
Dave, you are welcome to make us shut up by drawing attention to your own chart which shows how the complexity will be identical or lessened under the new plan. Rather than being a yellow-bellied ankle biter, why don’t you show us your reasoning?
For example, show us how you handle a health care situation (including the Governmental interactions) in whatever part of the United States you reside?

Actually, the result will be even MORE complicated. The chart does not even convey all the new IRS rules that will be necessary, the “health police” that will administer the fines for people and businesses that fail to purchase health insurance, etc.
The Medicare regulations RIGHT NOW take up more pages than the entire U.S. tax code. So why not double that? What could go wrong?

Though you do have a point – Obama’s plan can be simply explained:
You want to see a doctor? Wait a long time.
Need a procedure done – ranging from blood test to cancer treatment? Wait a long time.
Do you have an expensive disease to treat or are you old or do you participate in unhealthy behaviors? You may be turned away – but will give you pain killers.

Yes. My husband is employed and has a perfectly fine health insurance plan. So do millions of Americans.
Our system does not function as well for people who do not work or who work at minimum wage jobs that do not come with health insurance. It’s called capitalism. You get what you pay for and what you are willing to work for.
Our system also does not work well for people who change jobs and have existing and costly health problems. This is a terrible reason to junk the entire system and force everyone into a crappy government run system that will bankrupt the country.
Barack Obama promised to “do what works” and to leave alone what is working in our system. He lied. What he is advocating now will not work, and it will ruin what does work.
rockmom on July 23, 2009 at 1:09 PM
One of the main points of the chart is that Obama is claiming that there will be administrative savings and no loss of treatment response and quality in a government plan vs a private plan. This chart (which isn’t complete) shows that to be an outright lie.

And yet it’s still not nearly as complicated as the Gordian knots you Obamabots tie yourselves into trying to keep everyone from getting a clear look at your naked Emperor.
Fortunately, it’s not working.
Awwwww :*(

What next after censorship? Imprisonment? “Re-education” camps? The potential 2010 election bloodbath in Congress could make the 1994 elections look quaint.

Well. Not completely but I would see it highly limited to things like writing back to people that have written you with a statement or question. I think Cindy is right – I’m just incredibly incredibly tight with a buck. I spent a number of years as a monk under a vow of poverty. This has probably had a big impact on how I think of money and how it should be spent.

Which means government couldn’t possibly improve upon it.

Even I have had a healthcare plan at a freakin’ Kroger working part time. My sister had one available to her at PetSmart if she wanted it while working during the summer between college semesters. That’s a generalization, but, my God, if they can give us one in low-paying retail, then why the hell should we have to listen to these leftists cry and whine about not having healthcare? Healthcare, in some form, is available to the working poor. I agree that we need to regulate the prescription prices and regulate the healthcare industry, I’ll give moderate Dems that, but the answer is not creating a universal healthcare system that will add another pile of trillions to the budget deficit. Left-wing Dems like Pelosi and Obama don’t seem to get that. At all.

I think Stossel put it best:
The Arrogance of Health Care Reform
Why do politicians with no business experience think they can run 15 percent of the economy?

But but but you don’t understand – they care so much!

There are currently 68,000 people employed by the Social Security Administration. All this agency does is collect taxes, write checks, give out new Social Security cards, and determine eligibility for disability payments. And it needs 68,000 people to do those simple tasks.
How many people do you think it will take to run the 7 new agencies this bill will establish?

I’ve been looking at this more closely. I’m not sure I like agreeing with him – but Dave Rywall appears to be correct. It appears as if the chart has been given poor layout, design, and structure in an attempt to over-complicate it. I think the plan is complicated enough and arguments against it are sound enough that we don’t need to resort to gimmicks.
dieudonne on July 23, 2009 at 1:21 PM
How long is the actual bill? At least 1000+ pages right? The bill isn’t even ‘finalized’. One could argue that the chart is inaccurate (though if they do they should point out how) but do you honestly believe it’s not going to be more complicated than the chart indicates?
