Yet another poll shows Obama in trouble

posted at 10:11 am on July 22, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama will hold another prime-time press conference tonight, and it’s not difficult to see why.  One poll after another has shown confidence in Obama eroding, especially on the economy and even on health care, the two topics Obama will address in his presser.  The latest polling comes from the Associated Press, and it adds to the growing consensus among pollsters that Obama has slipped badly over the last month:

That was fast. The hope and optimism that washed over the country in the opening months of Barack Obama’s presidency are giving way to harsh realities.

An Associated Press-GfK Poll shows that a majority of Americans are back to thinking that the country is headed in the wrong direction after a fleeting period in which more thought it was on the right track.

Obama still has a solid 55 percent approval rating — better than Bill Clinton and about even with George W. Bush six months into their presidencies — but there are growing doubts about whether he can succeed at some of the biggest items on his to-do list. And there is a growing sense that he is trying to tackle too much too soon.

The number of people who think Obama can improve the economy is down a sobering 19 percentage points from the euphoric days just before his inauguration. Ditto for expectations about creating jobs. Also down significantly: the share of people who think he can reduce the deficit, remove troops from Iraq and improve respect for the U.S. around the world, all slipping 15 points.

On overhauling health care, a signature issue for Obama, hopes for success are down a lesser 6 points.

The questions and calculations can be found here.  The sampling looks a little skewed, although not nearly as much so as the CBS polls.  With leaners, the poll shows a 48-38 split with 14% either independent or unsure.  When the leaners are taken out and added back into the independent column, though, the sample becomes 34% Democrats, 23% Republicans, and 40% independents.  Again, since Obama got a decent-size crossover vote from Republicans in 2008 and by seven points, an eleven-point gap in favor of Democrats looks pretty strange — especially while the polling has turned poorly for Obama and the Democrats.

Even with that, Obama has deep problems with voters on issues that go to the heart of his agenda.  On the economy, Obama blew a 23-point gap in three months, going from 58-35 approval to 50-46, within the margin of error.  His 25-point gap on health care has been reduced to seven points, 50-43, barely hanging onto a majority in an issue that Democrats have owned for years.  Obama still has a health lead on the environment (56-31), but his disapproval has shot up 12 points. On taxes, his approval gap went from +19 to +2, a statistical dead heat.  His 30-point lead on unemployment shrank to nine points.  He’s also under water on immigration (39-41); three months ago, he had an 17-point lead, 47-30.

On the deficit, though, Obama has lost almost all credibility outside his own party.  Three months ago, Obama had an eight-point lead but not an outright majority, 49-41.  He now has a majority disapproving on the deficit, 51-39, a twelve-point dip into the red.  When asked it Obama would likely shrink the federal deficit, respondents overwhelmingly said no, 60-35.   In January, Obama had a plurality who believed he would, 49-45, which makes this a 29-point flip in six months.

People have seen Obama’s economic policies up close for the first time, and they don’t like them.  As Obama tries to push his radical agenda on health care and energy through Capitol Hill, members of Congress will be looking at those numbers and balking more often.  Obama hopes to change the trajectory of the numbers with a prime-time presser and a flood of media appearances this week, but clearly the American electorate has stopped paying attention to the campaign and focused on results — and they’ve found Obama wanting thus far.

Update: The first link was bad; I’ve fixed it.  Thanks to HA reader TR4A, my cousin Mike, for the correction.

With Senators and Congressmen who seem to vote with the flow in congress, do these polls really represent the idea that we could have effective influence over their vote?

After all, remember the stimulus vote? It doesn’t make me feel warm and fuzzy about defeating this public health care option.

I wonder if Ogabe ever thinks to himself that his numbers are dropping like a rock because the public perceives he is always campaigning and never actually working?

Not that I mind, its less damage for him to do, but his modus operandi seems to be to appear in front of the cameras, smile and nod, demand that Congress do as he says, and then jet off to a foreign nation for ebullient praise and shopping with the Lieutenant.

I’ll watch. I’ve suffered through all them thus far, but this one is intriguing given his falling poll numbers, the failure of porkulus, the electorate going after Congressmen at town hall meetings, and even some of the drive-bys getting fed up with his act.

This press conference is not just a key moment in Obama’s Presidency. It’s also a huge opportunity for the media to potentially begin that very very long road back to regaining at least a shred of their credibility. If they ask serious, challenging questions tonight and avoid lobbing softballs or God help us asking about what enchants him about being President, then there may be hope for this country after all.

I’m curious:

1. What have the viewership numbers been like for these Prez pressers? What’s the trend?

2. Has the approval for a particular bill/plan been boosted by any of his pressers? I’m not the target of his speeches [as he can't persuade me of anything] but curious if they’ve had any positive effect.

If so, then I can see why he keeps doing this; if not, I wonder why he keeps using tactics that have yet to work for him as Prez [as opposed to tactics that work for winning elections].

“There is nothing new under the sun”

As Bill Kristol put it, every 16 years voters realize that republicans have done well in foreign policy, so they get excited and vote in a young naiive democrat ‘outsider’ for president. Soonafter, the public realizes they hate the democrat’s liberal policies, and go back to republicans to clean the mess up, in which case another 16 years voters will again pick the young democrat after gop fp success…..

first cycle:
eisenhower ends (for all practical purposes) korean war
1960: naive democrat JFK elected, proceeds to come inches from nuclear war with the soviets in just a year’s time, and starts vietnam’s boondoggle; after his death, LBJ rams through the ‘great society’, instantly losing a buttload of congress in the ’66 elections, and becoming horribly entangled in vietnam.

second cycle:
nixon elected in reaction to dem failure, ends vietnam war, makes peace with china
1976: with foreign policy ok, public turns to naiive outsider Jimmy Carter for domestic issues. his term is a disaster, with double digit unemployment and inflation. fails on iran, approval ratings tank.

third cycle:
reagan elected to clean up carter’s world, gets back hostages in 1 hour, bankrupts the ussr, stands up the the ussr. hw bush elected, liberates kuwait (using other muslim armies, not just the west, to boot) and makes middle east temporarily ‘peaceful’.
1992: public, not worried about communism or terrorism, freaks about the recession earlier that year and elects a naiive democrat outsider Bill Clinton for domestic issues. clinton immediately overreaches on health care, gays in military, etc… reelected because he hired dick morris and acts like a republican (welfare reform), but still does nothing about foreign policy

fourth cycle:
w bush elected, deals with 9/11, keeps us safe from future attack (cant say the same about madrid, london, bali, algiers, etc.). war with iraq topples a dictator and establishes a nascent democracy in a former tyrannical almost-nuclear state. deaths in iraq at an all time low by his exit
2008: young, naiive, “articulate, clean” (bidens words) black man Barack Obama wins against crotchety 72 year old without a plan. immediately young dem president screws the pooch on iran, abandons iraq, sees rising deaths in afghanistan, fritters away in support of tyrants in honduras, and kills the american economy.

fifth cycle:
(prediction)
2012-sarah palin elected, cleans up mess, kills osama, fixes border
2016-reelected with 90% of the vote
2020-former vice president marco rubio wins election, makes cuba free, nothing left to do foreign policy wise
2024-with nothing else to ‘save’, rubio says ‘my work is done’, and america elects a young headstrong marxist named… Chelsea CLinton?

you just eliminated 90% of the political pool…

Considering the contentious 2000 election, I’m really surprised that Obama’s approval rating is on par with GWB’s.

I don’t think that Obama has “ruined” any chance for any candidate whatever their racial makeup, AS LONG AS THEIR IDEOLOGY IS RIGHT. By “right” I mean conservative – small government, lower taxes, local and state rule.

Those traits sound like Harry Alford, the head of the National Black Chamber of Commerce who’s been raking Boxer over the coals recently.

I think he knows it’s his Waterloo too.

Let’s hope so. I like this one: “You’re going to destroy my presidency.”

I thought it wasn’t about him.

Bill Beckel on Fox News, just questioned about Obama’s rush to get this bill passed ….

“We’ve been trying to get national health care for 59 years, how can you say we’re rushing?”

Tap dancing leftist tool.

My HOPE is that someone sticks a fork in this guy and let’s him know that HE’S DONE! Dittoes for that thug RE.

Thankfully the witless boobs who voted for this closet commie are waking up, albeit slowly. The self-interested Dems who tied themselves to his coat tails are despartely unwinding those loving bonds so they’re not sucked down in the vortex when he sinks for good.

I’m happy with my prediction – well, it was more of a vain hope at the time – that he’d be a one-termer, another Jimmy Carter. Now the polls are indicating that Carter’d win in a run off against the Magic O.

And guess who is free to go on the attack Monday morning?

Sapwolf on July 22, 2009 at 10:43 AM

I’m with Wethal, I think we are fooling ourselves to think it won’t get passed. That said, I am still calling congressmen and senators because I will not give up the fight. And if this does pass before the break, there will be hell to pay in my district, because I will picketing my congressman’s office daily, with my kids. And finding anyone else I can to do it with me. Hell hath no fury like a scorned taxpayer…..
