Yet another poll shows Obama in trouble

posted at 10:11 am on July 22, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama will hold another prime-time press conference tonight, and it’s not difficult to see why.  One poll after another has shown confidence in Obama eroding, especially on the economy and even on health care, the two topics Obama will address in his presser.  The latest polling comes from the Associated Press, and it adds to the growing consensus among pollsters that Obama has slipped badly over the last month:

That was fast. The hope and optimism that washed over the country in the opening months of Barack Obama’s presidency are giving way to harsh realities.

An Associated Press-GfK Poll shows that a majority of Americans are back to thinking that the country is headed in the wrong direction after a fleeting period in which more thought it was on the right track.

Obama still has a solid 55 percent approval rating — better than Bill Clinton and about even with George W. Bush six months into their presidencies — but there are growing doubts about whether he can succeed at some of the biggest items on his to-do list. And there is a growing sense that he is trying to tackle too much too soon.

The number of people who think Obama can improve the economy is down a sobering 19 percentage points from the euphoric days just before his inauguration. Ditto for expectations about creating jobs. Also down significantly: the share of people who think he can reduce the deficit, remove troops from Iraq and improve respect for the U.S. around the world, all slipping 15 points.

On overhauling health care, a signature issue for Obama, hopes for success are down a lesser 6 points.

The questions and calculations can be found here.  The sampling looks a little skewed, although not nearly as much so as the CBS polls.  With leaners, the poll shows a 48-38 split with 14% either independent or unsure.  When the leaners are taken out and added back into the independent column, though, the sample becomes 34% Democrats, 23% Republicans, and 40% independents.  Again, since Obama got a decent-size crossover vote from Republicans in 2008 and by seven points, an eleven-point gap in favor of Democrats looks pretty strange — especially while the polling has turned poorly for Obama and the Democrats.

Even with that, Obama has deep problems with voters on issues that go to the heart of his agenda.  On the economy, Obama blew a 23-point gap in three months, going from 58-35 approval to 50-46, within the margin of error.  His 25-point gap on health care has been reduced to seven points, 50-43, barely hanging onto a majority in an issue that Democrats have owned for years.  Obama still has a health lead on the environment (56-31), but his disapproval has shot up 12 points. On taxes, his approval gap went from +19 to +2, a statistical dead heat.  His 30-point lead on unemployment shrank to nine points.  He’s also under water on immigration (39-41); three months ago, he had an 17-point lead, 47-30.

On the deficit, though, Obama has lost almost all credibility outside his own party.  Three months ago, Obama had an eight-point lead but not an outright majority, 49-41.  He now has a majority disapproving on the deficit, 51-39, a twelve-point dip into the red.  When asked it Obama would likely shrink the federal deficit, respondents overwhelmingly said no, 60-35.   In January, Obama had a plurality who believed he would, 49-45, which makes this a 29-point flip in six months.

People have seen Obama’s economic policies up close for the first time, and they don’t like them.  As Obama tries to push his radical agenda on health care and energy through Capitol Hill, members of Congress will be looking at those numbers and balking more often.  Obama hopes to change the trajectory of the numbers with a prime-time presser and a flood of media appearances this week, but clearly the American electorate has stopped paying attention to the campaign and focused on results — and they’ve found Obama wanting thus far.

Update: The first link was bad; I’ve fixed it.  Thanks to HA reader TR4A, my cousin Mike, for the correction.

This man will strike back when cornered and that is a good thing, folks can see it is all about him and screwing the USA.
Summer for reps needs to be hell and out right comments directed at the speaker. If this is such good stuff then congress must have the same plans as all of us. Equality under the civil rights act? This is full employment for bored young lawyers who want to make a name for themselves, tie all the programs up in court. Congress needs to be brought under our laws and not exempt.

I can’t wait to see some polling after tonight. Obama has gotten by on his charm so far. He make a “good” speech and the people swoon. Lets see if that still holds true or if the bloom is off the rose. I really hope him giving a campaign speech isn’t going to have the same effect it has in the past. Not just because I don’t like Obama, but because the American people really should expect more from their president.

The “Waterloo”, which by the way was first stated here on HotAir…is more apt then any other.
This is a watershed moment in his very new presidency…he will not recover from this, that is why the pressure cannot be anything but full court.
This will be a huge defeat, and he may never be able to get any other major bill past…congress will be afraid to be attached to someone with such poor numbers.
The Republicans need to attack and keep the attack going, already Card Check is being torn apart, his next “stimulus” will have no teeth.
This is like a major thrust through what was thought of an impenetrable line…a “D” day event. Attacking him head on, on his own “beach”, getting behind his front lines and forcing his supporters to surrender, and hopefully defect.
Just remember the Olympia’s, the “soldiers” who stayed on the boat for fear of the fight…

yup, the first time i heard it, i was like “oh SNAP, it works!”

a republican president/presidents come in and make the world safe in foreign policy…. so every 16 years voters get bored, and elect a naiive democrat ‘outsider’ for some domestic issue — at which point the democrat gets in a mess at home and abroad.

it totally works. let me sum it up since my long comment fell off the page:

eisenhower ends korean war
1960: naiive young dem JFK, immediately tries to invade cuba, comes within inches of nuclear war, starts vietnam. LBJ overreaches with great society, loses congress, screws up vietnam

nixon to the rescue, ends vietnam, peace with china
1976: naiive young dem carter, ruins economy, beclowned by iran

reagon to the rescue, gets hostages back, stands up to ussr, hw defeats saddam, sees communism fall
1992: naiive yound dem clinton, overreaches, health care, gays in military, waco; survives only by acting “republican” thanks to his advisor dick morris

w bush elected, after 911 keeps up safe(unlike london, madrid, etc.), takes out saddam, has democracy in middle east, death toll at lowest ever by end of term
2008: naiive young obama, immediately overreaching, screwed up on iran, supported tyrants in honduras, death counts in afghanistan near highest ever, ruining economy with ‘stimulus’, attempting with cap & tax and health care to take control of your ENTIRE LIFE.

….the 16-year-naiive-young-democrat-cycle…. bad news for future pres marco rubio (who, after vp under 2 terms of palin, will only get 1 term of his own before losing to a young dem — i said on the last page — chelsea clinton??)

This riff annoys me. Everytime I hear it, it implies that the only reason the filthy liar is failing is that he cares too much to be patient with the way Washington does this stuff. The reality is the rat bastard traitor got too greedy too early and overextended himself. With the economy, he probably could have gotten either cap and trade or healthcare reform through in some form but not both and not a month apart.

Fact of the matter is that healthcare reform should take more than six months of discussion and debate even if that is the only focus. It should be bipartisan instead of Nancy Pelosi locking the GOP out of discussions. And it should make sense which means that the savings have to be clear instead of the filthy liar’s constant discussion of removing “inefficiencies” to pay for it all.

highhopes on July 22, 2009 at 11:02 AM

nixon elected in reaction to dem failure, ends vietnam war, makes peace with china
1976: with foreign policy ok, public turns to naiive outsider Jimmy Carter for domestic issues. his term is a disaster, with double digit unemployment and inflation. fails on iran, approval ratings tank.

You left something very important out of Nixon’s history. He was found to be corrupt, using the Presidency to defend burglars, instead of throwing them under the bus from the get-go. Voters associated Republicans with Nixon’s corruption (especially after Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon) in the 1976 election, which led to the election of “naive” Carter.

The “culture of corruption” issue cost Republicans dearly in the 2006 Congressional elections, with many GOP Congressmen tied to Abramoff, as well as scandals surrounding Tom DeLay and Mark Foley. No question, this will haunt the Democrats in 2010, with scandals surrounding Nancy Pelosi and Jack Murtha, although Republican Senators Vitter and Ensign have also admitted affairs.

Power corrupts (on both sides), so in addition to avoiding complacency in Government, if Republicans re-take the House in 2010 and/or the Presidency in 2012, they will have to govern competently with the interests of the American people in mind, and avoid the temptation to enrich themselves on taxpayer money. Voters tend to punish those who do, regardless of party.

battleoflepanto1571 on July 22, 2009 at 10:59 AM

I suspect part of the desperation over health care reform is the fact that the filthy liar’s only major legislative success to date has been passing the stimulus bill that has done nothing to help the economy even though he promised it would provide immediate relief and turnaround of the economy. He’s also kept most of the Bush-era policies when it comes to national security issues which hurts him with those who voted for him based on what he said on the campaign trial (leading’s different than promising).

The filthy liar has been in office six months and has virtually nothing good to show for his time in power. Fall is a tougher time to get major legislation passed because the calendar is more broken up and nobody is going to touch major legislation past then because the mid-term elections begin to loom. If I had to guess, there will be a very nasty battle in the next 16 days with the filthy liar’s plan in some form emerging so that the rat bastard traitor can declare victory before the unemployment numbers hit double digits nationally.

faraway on July 22, 2009 at 11:30 AM

The other 52% had to elect the guy first and then figure it out.

Idiots!!!! Thanks a lot!

UltimateBob on July 22, 2009 at 11:17 AM

No the 52% just had to elect a cool black dude because like man, it’s way cool. I saw quite a few people doing high fives because they were now in that special group that was just so freaking hip because they voted for a black dude. At least half the morons didn’t even know BO’s party because well he was just so cool and so black that how could you not vote for him?

So you’re saying the wheels are falling off the Obama Administration?

I blame the nut behind the wheel.

NoDonkey on July 22, 2009 at 11:32 AM

This man will strike back when cornered and that is a good thing, folks can see it is all about him and screwing the USA.
Summer for reps needs to be hell and out right comments directed at the speaker. If this is such good stuff then congress must have the same plans as all of us. Equality under the civil rights act? This is full employment for bored young lawyers who want to make a name for themselves, tie all the programs up in court. Congress needs to be brought under our laws and not exempt.

Col.John Wm. Reed on July 22, 2009 at 10:44 AM

He’s probably as weak at striking back as he is at building a consensus amongst KoolAid drinkers…

I can’t stand Beckel, he’s a slobbering fool.. Spits when he talks.

Take action! Call your Representatives and Senators in Washington D.C. Tell them to vote “no” on government healthcare. The healthcare vote is imminent!

All Senators: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

All Representatives: http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW.shtml

Take action! Contact this vulnerable legislator and urge him to vote “no”:

Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) ph. (202) 224-3744 fax (202) 224-6020

(When his staff asks for your zip code, tell them 52401 Cedar Rapids, 51501 Council Bluffs, 52801 Davenport or 50309 Des Moines.)

Take action! Sign the petition at http://www.FreeOurHealthcareNow.com

good tips: I’m proud to say I’m an Iowan. SEN Grassley had big stones to leak that information today to the nationaljournal regarding the “You’re going to destroy my presidency” quote from the POTUS.

Tonights press conference will give America a chance to see a captain go down with his ship. It’s a good thing we’ll all be here to blog it.

Looks like the ‘community organizer’ is in over his head. Surprise! Surprise!

GarandFan on July 22, 2009 at 12:06 PM

This is beyond his pay-grade.

pay = $0.00
grade = -D

I hope he fails faster.

Geochelone on July 22, 2009 at 12:42 PM

Time to play the race card!!!

notagool on July 22, 2009 at 1:24 PM

I can see it now … four years from now when Obama takes his farewell walk on the white house lawn … secret service will be dragging him along as he struggles to make his was back to the oval office, yelling:

I INHERITED IT!
IT’S NOT NNNNNNOT MY FAULT!
But I INHERITED IT!!

GAAAAAHHH!

And Michelle will unleash her war cry

blatantblue on July 22, 2009 at 10:58 AM

And once again, Michelle will be “not proud” of her country…

RD on July 22, 2009 at 1:32 PM

there are growing doubts about whether he can succeed at some of the biggest items on his to-do list. And there is a growing sense that he is trying to tackle too much too soon.

This riff annoys me. Everytime I hear it, it implies that the only reason the filthy liar is failing is that he cares too much to be patient with the way Washington does this stuff.

highhopes on July 22, 2009 at 11:02 AM

Or that the main issue is the *speed* of it, rather than *what* he’s doing. If he was passing some decent regulation to bring down the cost of healthcare, it might in fact not be “too much too soon”.

Agree BTW with how this meme sets up a patronizing attitude between the One and his slow-witted subjects… too convenient by half.

RD on July 22, 2009 at 1:36 PM

If this poll says Obama’s approval ratiing is 55, it is really more like 48. It seems as if these outfits almost always give Democrats about a 7 point advantage.

And I don’t see how it gets better for Obama. It will take a miracle. And despite what his followers believe, Obama is not the Messiah.

Terrye on July 22, 2009 at 4:04 PM

What does First Booty Michelle have to say about this? Maybe she’s up for an interview for some glossy mag, wherein she pouts because people are so ungrateful, and they keep raising the bar for Barry.

You know, “stand by your man” with biceps flexed and hand fisted.

Here is an idea for a cartoon.
-
B.O. opening his Karl Marx’s America tool kit.
-
The instruction sheet reads –
-
“Some disassembly required”
