Preview of tonight’s prime-time presser

Tonight’s prime-time press conference intends to give Barack Obama a chance to communicate directly to the American people about his flailing health-care reform efforts, which have stalled in Congress along with his cap-and-trade bill.  As the New York Times reports, it also gives Obama a chance to claim credit for the economy.  If that sounds out of touch, the Times doesn’t make it sound any better coming from Rahm Emanuel, emphasis mine:

On Wednesday, Mr. Obama will address the nation in a prime-time news conference. Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff, said in an interview that the president intended to use it as a “six-month report card,” to talk about “how we rescued the economy from the worst recession” and the legislative agenda moving forward, including health care and energy legislation, which squeaked through the House and faces a tough road in the Senate.

That’s a poorly-written sentence.  The energy bill squeaked through the House, but ObamaCare hasn’t yet come out of committee.  The structure of that last sentence makes it sound as if both had passed in the lower chamber, when the limbo status of the health-care package is one of the reasons why Obama called this press conference.

Putting that aside, the idea that the economy has generated enough good news to claim any sort of credit seems ludicrous to everyone living outside the Beltway.  Unemployment continues to rise, and even Obama himself said it would go into double digits this year.  Last week, the number of seasonally-adjusted new claims for unemployment was 522,000, while the unadjusted number was 667,000, an increase of over 86,000 from the previous week. Retail sales were up last month, but most of the increase came only from a sharp rise in gas prices.

Does Barack Obama really plan to take credit for this? Does he think Americans feel “rescued” at this point?  That claim will mark him as out of touch with the American electorate, while at the same time forcing him to take ownership of the economic crisis and eliminating the “inherited” defense.  If Americans had already begun to distrust his acumen on economic policy, this will accelerate that trend mightily.

Update: Keith Hennessey has 20 Questions for tonight’s presser.  Here are a couple of my favorites:

  • You have said transparency is a top priority.  Yet you are calling on Congress to pass a trillion-plus dollar spending bill before CBO has had time to estimate its full effects.  In addition, your Administration is delaying release of the new economic projections and deficit estimates until after Congress votes on this massive new spending bill.  Will you commit now that you will not ask Members of Congress to vote on this massive new spending commitment until your Administration has met its legal obligation to provide an updated economic forecast and deficit projection, and until CBO has provided Congress with transparent and complete analysis of the bill?
  • In a February 2008 debate with then-Senator Clinton you opposed an individual mandate to buy health insurance.  In that debate you said, “In some cases, there are people who are paying fines and still can’t afford it, so now they’re worse off than they were.  They don’t have health insurance and they’re paying a fine.  In order for you to force people to get health insurance, you’ve got to have a very harsh penalty.”  Now you are supporting a bill that would force people to buy health insurance, and that CBO says would still result in eight million people not having health insurance and paying higher taxes.  How do you explain to those eight million uninsured people why you now support the mandate and “very harsh penalty” they would have to face, and which you opposed during the campaign?
  • The U.S. economy has lost 2.64 million jobs since you took office.  The unemployment rate is 9.5% and rising.  The good scenario is one in which the unemployment rate begins to decline early next year.  The Vice President said your Administration misread the economy.  You said you had incomplete information when proposing the stimulus.   Yet you have said you would not change anything about the stimulus if you could.  If the facts have changed, why doesn’t it make sense to change your policy?

How many of these will actually get asked by the White House press corps?  Print out Keith’s post and use it as a scorecard.

Yet you have said you would not change anything about the stimulus if you could. If the facts have changed, why doesn’t it make sense to change your policy?

I like this one. GWB was constantly attacked for not changing policy when the facts had changed, particularly when it came to Iraq.

Nevertheless the question I’d like to hear asked is this:

Mr. President. Six months ago you came into office in a euphoric wave of optimism. The world was interested in everything you said. Tonight you are speaking to us at 8pm because a Scottish woman is going to be on America’s got talent. Your approval ratings are in decline and for the first time since taking office the majority of Americans think the nation is headed in the wrong direction. Do you think you bear any responsibility for this decline and what do you propose to do about it?

However, any discussion about the primetime presser will be totally ignored tomorrow.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A public memorial for late anchorman Walter Cronkite will be held at New York’s Lincoln Center at a date to be announced, sources at CBS News told Access Hollywood.

A private funeral for the iconic newsman, dubbed the “most trusted man in America,” will be held on Thursday at St. Bartholemew’s on New York City’s Fifth Avenue. He will be buried alongside his wife Betsy in Missouri, the sources said. The public memorial will come at a later time.

There’s no such thing as private when it comes to hiding Barry’s bad performance.

Knucklehead on July 22, 2009 at 2:04 PM

If they follow the information in the story the funeral coverage will be interesting, since St. Bart’s isn’t on Fifth Avenue (and when you think about it, given the hype around Cronkite’s life story and the actual reality, it’s kind of appropriate they’d screw up the location of the funeral, even if only by a couple of blocks).

AZCoyote on July 22, 2009 at 2:11 PM

You already know the answer to this one.

1. Obamacare is not a takeover it is simply providing a way for the uninsured to get coverage. It does not replace private insurance but will foster competition in the marketplace. Private insurance has a 20-30% overhead and that is unacceptable. Obamacare will drive down costs for all insurance.

2. Except for some of the very rich, we will not be increasing taxes to pay for this program. The savings will come through realignment of what we are already spending on healthcare and removing the inefficiencies from the system. Average Americans will not be paying one penny more than they already are.

3. If you like your current provider you can keep it. With Obamacare there will be more choice in the marketplace, not less.

4. (my favorite) Healthcare is a right and it would be immoral to not undertake reform at this time.

highhopes on July 22, 2009 at 2:25 PM

We Americans are PEOPLE, we are INDIVIDUALS and we have inherent VALUE. We are AMERICAN CITIZENS—we are NOT AMERICAN LINE ITEMS, something to be simply as a cost, a bill, something to be cut–except when you need a vote.

I am frankly offended at the insinuation that Dr. Frankenstein Obama would suggest that he could ever oversimplify the decision making involved in the care of human beings to merely a dollar figure. As a healthcare provider, this dehumanizing and devaluation of life is a danger to the health and welfare of all Americans, particularly the most vulnerable–elderly, children and the chronically ill or handicapped.

To reflect on GEN Norman Schwarzkopf’s assessment of Saddam Hussein as a war leader during Operation Desert Storm he quipped, “As far as Saddam Hussein being a great military strategist, he is neither a
strategist, nor is he schooled in the operational art, nor is he a tactician, nor is he a general, nor is he a soldier. Other than that he’s a great military man-I want you to know that.”

Well, in that same vein. As far as President Obama being a great healthcare leader, he is neither a physician, nor is he schooled in the healing arts, nor is he skilled as an administrator, nor is he an ancillary health provider, nor is he a nurse. Other than that he’s a great healthcare guy–I want you to know that.”

Or:

“Since I have been diagnosed with melanoma, should I use Gold Bond cream, Jergen’s lotion, Avon’s Skin So Soft or Georgia clay?”

I’ll be watching Torchwood. Obama has been on tv so much he qualifies for syndication.

Obama is very silly to have programmed this during Mark Levin’s radio show. I won’t be watching other channels and the TV won’t even be on. I’ll be relaxing and listening.

Abby Adams:
More drinking game phrases:

“I reject the notion”
“put American people ahead of politics”
“no more politics as usual”
“time for action”
“must not delay”
“problem not of my making”
“real world solutions”
“there are some who say”

Not really “prime time”. Most of the West coast will be stuck in rush hour traffic.

lucky West coast, but not to worry. It’s a re-run and it didn’t play real well before. It will surely be run again so you get another chance.

How many of these (questions) will actually get asked by the White House press corps?

Oh, I expect them to ask:

How’s Bo working out in the White House?
What does Bo eat?
Are the kids sleeping soundly at night?
When will Michelle be out shopping for more $600 shoes?
Are you and Michelle going out on another date soon?

You know, the usual piercing and informative questions.

Mr. President, which Susan Boyle song do you most associate with: “I Had a Dream” or “Cry Me a River”?
