Obama to Dems wavering on health care: “You’re going to destroy my presidency”

posted at 12:06 pm on July 22, 2009 by Allahpundit

Like I told you the other day: It’s all about the O. Isn’t it always?

Grassley said he spoke with a Democratic House member last week who shared Obama’s bleak reaction during a private meeting to reports that some factions of House Democrats were lining up to stall or even take down the overhaul unless leaders made major changes.

“Let’s just lay everything on the table,” Grassley said. “A Democrat congressman last week told me after a conversation with the president that the president had trouble in the House of Representatives, and it wasn’t going to pass if there weren’t some changes made … and the president says, ‘You’re going to destroy my presidency.’”

Consider this a complete vindication of DeMint’s point, which Obama pretended to take such offense at, that if the GOP defeats ObamaCare “it will be his Waterloo, it will break him…” Evidently The One couldn’t agree more, and with good reason. If he can’t deliver on his centerpiece policy goal with bulletproof majorities in Congress, not only will it haunt him in 2012 but he’ll have to reconsider the public’s appetite for the whole Hopenchange/Great Society agenda. Failure wouldn’t destroy his presidency so much as it would destroy his presidency as he imagined it; he’d have to remake himself as a sort of Clintonian centrist and become the “pragmatist” all those thoughtful conservatives like David Brooks and Christopher Buckley promised us he’d be before he was sworn in and started pushing 13-digit deficits.

Here’s Krauthammer from last night’s “Special Report” explaining the stakes and why, in the end, Obama will swallow whatever watered-down crap Congress hands him. Hint: It’s all about the O.

this is epic in proportion—we are front and center in this history folks.

Very much so. Depending on how things go, this point in time could stand out for centuries, if not millenia. Unfortunately, it is more likely to end up as the world’s greatest cautionary tale.

JiangxiDad on July 22, 2009 at 12:51 PM

The most compelling argument for the American people tonight will be the threat of daily primetime press conferences by The One. If this drags out past August, he’ll be ruining the new prime time TV.

Actually I’m hoping he keeps the TV pressure up and more stations refuse to air the press conferences, like Fox did that time.

On that note, I’m surprised we haven’t seen any direct “boy who cries wolf” analogies yet. The press has been hinting about his omnipresence, but I’d love to see those words in print on on the air.

As long as this tired clown act doesn’t pre-empt football this fall, he can take over prime time on the networks all he wants, as far as I’m concerned.

Because that will really make the majority of voters start to despise him, which is a good thing.

Anybody up on House rules regarding Aye/Nay voice votes?

Chris_Balsz on July 22, 2009 at 1:23 PM

The problem is that the President has no real sales experience. He doesn’t consider the “What’s in it for me?” angle.

Now, if he’s saying that it will bring down his power and the targeted Dems as well, then that’s a real WIIFM statement. If it’s all focused on him, then that doesn’t have much persuasive power.

meep on July 22, 2009 at 12:37 PM

Without sales experience, Obama doesn’t consider the “What’s in it for YOU” angle. All the “Yes We Can” was really about “Yes I Can”, and “Judgment to Lead” was about HIS supposed “judgment”.

But to ask ordinary voters to fork over more tax dollars for something, you’ve got to tell them “what’s in it for THEM”, not what’s in it for HIM. Trying to pass a law that TELLS people what health-care they can’t get, take two aspirins and forget the pacemaker, and that they can’t sign up for new private insurance doesn’t answer the question, “what’s in this for THEM”. More and more voters are answering that question for Obama: Not a whole lot.

So Obama is now badgering Congressmen from his own party: “Yes We Can (read: Yes I Can), don’t bring down MY presidency.” To which the Blue Dogs say, “what’s in this for ME–unemployment in 2011? I need time to meet my constituents, and I’ll get back to you…”

It’s all about the O. It always was. It always will be. Two books, all about the O. Take a look in the mirror, Barry O. You’ve got big ears. Time to use them, for a Change.

The one thing more important to dems then this bill, is their re-election. They would all let the mothers die without care if it meant they could get re-elected.
As long as we show them that voting for this bill will be the quickest way for them to lose their job…this bill will never be passed.
I don’t care how ruthless, how much pressure is put on…the threat of any of these dems having to go out and actually work, actually not feeding at the government trough is unbearable to them.
We have to be sure they know a vote for this, is a vote to remove them.

Consider this a complete vindication of DeMint’s point, which Obama pretended to take such offense at, that if the GOP defeats ObamaCare “it will be his Waterloo, it will break him…”

The reason Obama brought up that quote is because it makes it clear that the GOP is at least as interested in defeating Obama’s agenda for political purposes as it is because it opposes his policy.

If you dont believe me, listen to George Voinovich:

Host: Senator, one question, before we go, on health care. How much of this disagreement with the administration is about the policy of health care and how to fix it, and how much of it is Republicans’ obviously understandable desire to declaw the president politically. How much does that fit into the equation?

Voinovich: I think it’s probably 50-50.

Or listen to Bill Kristol, who has lately been saying roughly the same stuff that he said back in 1993.

Republicans are fighting this to save their skins. Their opinions of the actual policy arent particularly relevent to them. To them, the most important thing is that Obama fails, regardless of what he’s trying to do for the American people. Dont believe me? Re-read the above links.

Orange, that is because they don’t want America to die. They should be praised.
