Obama to Dems wavering on health care: “You’re going to destroy my presidency”
posted at 12:06 pm on July 22, 2009 by Allahpundit
Like I told you the other day: It’s all about the O. Isn’t it always?
Grassley said he spoke with a Democratic House member last week who shared Obama’s bleak reaction during a private meeting to reports that some factions of House Democrats were lining up to stall or even take down the overhaul unless leaders made major changes.
“Let’s just lay everything on the table,” Grassley said. “A Democrat congressman last week told me after a conversation with the president that the president had trouble in the House of Representatives, and it wasn’t going to pass if there weren’t some changes made … and the president says, ‘You’re going to destroy my presidency.’”
Consider this a complete vindication of DeMint’s point, which Obama pretended to take such offense at, that if the GOP defeats ObamaCare “it will be his Waterloo, it will break him…” Evidently The One couldn’t agree more, and with good reason. If he can’t deliver on his centerpiece policy goal with bulletproof majorities in Congress, not only will it haunt him in 2012 but he’ll have to reconsider the public’s appetite for the whole Hopenchange/Great Society agenda. Failure wouldn’t destroy his presidency so much as it would destroy his presidency as he imagined it; he’d have to remake himself as a sort of Clintonian centrist and become the “pragmatist” all those thoughtful conservatives like David Brooks and Christopher Buckley promised us he’d be before he was sworn in and started pushing 13-digit deficits.
Here’s Krauthammer from last night’s “Special Report” explaining the stakes and why, in the end, Obama will swallow whatever watered-down crap Congress hands him. Hint: It’s all about the O.

It’s funny how Clinton’s popularity went up he made it more about personality than policy, and portrayed himself as a victim of a vast, right-wing conspiracy. Democrats are really good at pretending the be the victim, even when they have all the power.
JohnJ on July 22, 2009 at 12:33 PM
I heard a woman call a radio show and complain about Krauthammer. She said that he was arguing that the republicans should not get involved and just let the democrats fight it out and fail. The caller was afraid it would end up like cap and tax and the democrats would all be bought off in the end while the republicans remained silent.
She’s right. Krautboy is not god.

Ahh, but the healthcare bill, that’s… that’s where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and with… geometric logic… that a duplicate key to the Treasury DID exist, and I’d have produced that key if they hadn’t of pulled my adminstration out of action. I, I, I know now they were only trying to protect some fellow Senators…

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on July 22, 2009 at 12:36 PM
The problem is that the President has no real sales experience. He doesn’t consider the “What’s in it for me?” angle.
Now, if he’s saying that it will bring down his power and the targeted Dems as well, then that’s a real WIIFM statement. If it’s all focused on him, then that doesn’t have much persuasive power.

So how many threats were made yesterday by Barry in his big meeting with the Blue Dawgs?
Or better yet, how much money was passed under the table?

Knucklehead on July 22, 2009 at 12:37 PM
I think it’s reasonable to conclude, or perhaps that the administration has concluded (more importantly), that as each passing day turns it is becoming more apparent that he is a one termer. If momentum is peaked, then the only time to get it done is now.
The further this vote is removed from his mandate (so called) the further it slips into the fold of failure.

Yes he is. It’s the notion of giving the Dems enough rope. It’s Churchill saying “never kill an enemy while he’s committing suicide.”

Pure BS! He can’t be all that worried since they continue to party on at the White House, while we sit out here and grind our teeth into powder.
http://www.kxmc.com/News/409163.asp
“President Obama says he may be a “city boy” but he appreciates country music. He and Mrs. Obama sure looked like they were enjoying last night’s country music concert at the White House. They, the Obama girls, staffers and elected officials filled the East Room at the White House to hear Charley Pride, Alison Kraus and Union Station and Brad Paisley.
http://primebuzz.kcstar.com/?q=node/19299
Obama understands one part as he told the crowd:
“After all, that’s what country music is all about — storytelling.”
But he doesn’t understand this part, as he told the crowd:
“And like all great art, a great country song also has a commitment to truth — to telling the truth like it is, without pulling any punches.”

Bad news for us, of course. Yet I think bad news for them as well. This rush to get it through will be reciprocated in the mid terms. It also means more outrage on the senate side which could translate into added pressure for them to kill it.
With all eggs seeming to go into this basket post haste, I have to wonder two things, what chamber would they rather keep their majority in and which one are they expecting to lose.
