Democrats cancel 2nd Obamacare markup meeting

posted at 10:55 am on July 22, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Make that two in a row that Democrats have ducked, reports Jake Tapper for ABC News.  Energy and Commerce had scheduled two meetings for HR3200 this week, the ObamaCare bill that Barack Obama insisted on getting before the August recess.  The cancellation, made late last night, shows that the health-care reform project may have run aground:

At 5:54 pm ET the news came: “The Energy and Commerce Markup of H.R. 3200 – America’s Affordable Health Choices Act for 7-22-09 has been CANCELLED.”

Not a good sign for the Democrats trying to report the bill out from committee onto the floor for a vote. Seven conservative blue dog Democrats on the committee have said they can’t vote for the bill in its current form. Some of those Blue Dogs came to the White House today for a 2 1/2 meeting, an hour of which was with President Obama. …

The White House expressed irritation at Republican obstructionism and “playing politics,” but Republicans countered that it’s unfair to blame them — pointing to the substantial majorities Democrats have in the House and Senate.

“If the bill fails,” said House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, “it will be because of disagreement among the Democrats.”

It also may be because of Obama himself.  He has conducted a highly-public campaign for passage of the bill, but has shown little knowledge of its contents.  Combine that with the failure of Obama’s other rush product, Porkulus, and the conditions for considerable skepticism are in place.

Obama seems to forget that Democrats have constituents to whom they must answer, many of them in the next 15 months.  Not all Democrats represent coastal liberal states and districts, and they can’t go home and argue for socialized medicine as easily as Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer.  They have one eye on Obama’s polling and see how dangerous it will be for them to climb out on that limb while the voters try to saw it off.

The seating of Al Franken gives the Republicans a little ironic cover for this position.  With 60 votes, Democrats can pass anything they want in the Senate, and their wide majority in the House makes it even more easy for Obama to control the agenda.  Whining about Republican obstructionism now is akin to complaining about taxes on a lottery jackpot; it’s insulting to the intelligence.

Tapper reports that the White House has backed away from the August deadline, but that’s just a nod to reality.  If Democrats can’t even hold a committee hearing on the issue, deadlines for full passage are moot.

Yes and I don’t think this guy knows how to deal with failure.

His career M.O. has been to do next to nothing for around six months, get promoted and then to look for the next job up the ladder.

He has no where else to go. If this fails and he becomes a lame duck, I predict he won’t even run in 2012. I don’t think he has the stomach for it.

A little part of me thinks he doesn’t plan to run in 2012, the country will be so FUBAR elections will require postponement.

Another part says he is on a one-way mission to frag the country as hard and fast as possible, reckoning that he will go work for some Soros entity afterward and the damage will take decades to undo even part of it. Don’t assume that Bama is like every other politician wants to be reelected over all else. The man is an ideologue, remember the blank stare when he was confronted with the positive results of lowering marginal tax rates on capital gains and would not reconsider in any way his plan to raise marginal rates. Soros has plenty of money to park him in a nothing job, just like Michelle had at UChi, make him a very wealthy. And then he can sit back and pontificate until hell freezes with no comebacks for really doing anything and failing. He is far past his level of incompetence and may not like the feeling.

I don’t believe he cares about the country his wife hated until he got elected. He cares about himself.

Oh, yes, massah-wannabe, I do hopes Your Presidency gets screwed into the wall so tight you never see the light of day again. Whether you run in 12 or not is beside the issue, it’s the damage you will do between then and now that has me worried, and why you are doing it.

The why is explained to me by your past, your fellow travelers and companions. Your “science” czar, people like that. Ayers, Zelaya and Chavez and the Castro Bros.

I think, Bama, you are laying the seeds for the destruction of America as I have known it…you couldn’t be doing much better at it if that was your plan in the beginningm, and the hell with reelection. It takes comparatively little time to destroy the work of decades. One tour might be enough.

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Pelosi the one that accused the Republicans of “astroturfing” awhile back with the tea parties? What the Hell does she call what she is doing???

Dire Straits on July 22, 2009 at 12:04 PM

I’d say neither. They’re both signs of desperation. He and the Dems will have a hard time running against the GOP in 2010 and 2012 considering they control every branch of government.

I realize there is a portion of the electorate that is so dumb or stuck on ideology that they’ll never blame the Dems for anything, but that won’t be enough to save most of these incumbents. Especially the ones in red districts.

Doughboy on July 22, 2009 at 11:06 AM

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/business/healthcare/july_2009/53_now_oppose_congressional_health_care_reform

Today’s Rasmussen poll showed that 53% of the general public oppose Obama’s health-care plan, including 60% of voters “not affiliated with either party”.

There are a lot of freshman or sophomore Democrats (elected to districts that had elected Republicans in 2004) in the House now, whose districts are full of voters “not affiliated with either party” who can change their minds.

These Democrats are probably VERY worried about getting 60% of Indies PO’d at them, without whom they are sent home. Which is probably why many of them are foot-dragging now, so they can ask people in their districts in August what THEY want, and devise a good seat-saving (and butt-saving) strategy.

They will be in a ticklish situation in 2010, trying to triangulate a middle ground, in opposition to both Republicans and a Democrat President. Republican challengers in those districts can basically campaign on taking the Speaker’s gavel away from Pelosi, and blocking Obama’s wild-spending socialism. Even if the Blue Dogs vote against the health-care bill, they can be hammered with “Can you trust a Democrat to stop Obama?”

Rasmussen’s “generic Congressional vote” has swung from 47 D – 41 R on Election Day 2008 to 42 R – 38 D now. Republicans haven’t gained much, but Democrats lost 9 points in 6 months! Even if the 20% undecided split evenly (or don’t vote), if these results hold in 2010, Republicans could decisively take over the House, by running on a platform of stopping Obama’s socialist spending by running against Pelosi, not necessarily the Democrat in the district, and let the Democrat worry about triangulating between Obama/Pelosi and the Republicans.

The caller asked how I knew any of this was going to happen.
